The article is an attempt to show connections of Vladimir Sorokin with OBERIU’s tradition as well as Russian futurism. The dramatist experiments with language creating his own version of postmodern zaum, thanks to that he can be called a real “word manipulator” (D. Tokariev). In this way Sorokin is always situated on the border of two orders: the past and the future one. At the same time he is an inheritor and continuator of Daniil Kharm’s theatre of the Absurd, on the other hand he is also an innovator who introduces dramatic genre into the stage of surprising, aesthetic experiments.

The article debates the sources of the Russian national identity, inspired by the novel by Vladimir Sorokin Day of the Oprichnik. In this dystopian fiction Sorokin depicts Russia in the third decade of the 21st century as a place where technological progress meets a return to the ancient social order, encapsulated in the system of state controlled terror called the Oprichnina. Sorokin exploits that vision to reflect upon the Oprichnina as a diabolical constant relapsing in deceptively different costumes throughout centuries of Russian history. Indeed, in various press interviews the Russian novelist asserts that the Oprichnina constitutes the very foundation of the Russian national identity.

The article focuses on the transgressive aspect of selected images of carnal love in the novel Голубое сало (Blue Lard) by Vladimir Sorokin. It is claimed that the contro-versial, hyper-naturalistic representations of sexuality can be perceived as materializa-tion of discourses (carnalization, as Mark Lipovetsky suggests). The main structures of power examined in the novel are totalitarian regime and literary tradition. By using the trope of defamiliarization and lowering the pathos of the two great discourses of Russian culture, Sorokin allows the reader to distance himself from their influence and thus extend the autonomy of thinking.

In this context Vladimir Sorokin's texts make their mark – for many of them the deconstruction of literary tradition and hermeneutics is a defining category.

The article is an attempt to answer the question of the way noir functions in the contemporary prose devoted to Moscow and the extent to which it affects the city’s literary image. The paper interprets selected works by Vladimir Sorokin, Roman Senchin and Sergei Kuznetsov. The analysis conducted by the author of the paper leads to the conclusion that the presence of the so-called “black naturalism” in the Moscow texts does not spoil the image of Russia’s capital, but complements it with new elements (previously hidden, but present since the old days). Therefore, Moscow becomes more real, tangible, flesh and blood as well as suitable for the worldwide tendency to create megapolises.

W artykule omówiono poglądy oraz ewolucję ideową rosyjsko-amerykańskiego socjologa, filozofa i działacza politycznego – Pitirima Sorokina. Pod wpływem rosyjskich wydarzeń roku 1917 dokonał on radykalnego zwrotu w ocenie marksizmu, konceptualizując swoje antyrewolucyjne stanowisko tradycjonalistyczne. Podzielał marksowską, negatywną diagnozę współczesnego świata, lecz zaproponował odmienne remedium. Jego intencją było oczyszczenie idei równości z warstwy redukcjonistycznego materializmu. Sorokin zaproponował więc utopijną koncepcję równości duchowej, którą przedstawił w mało znanej i przemilczanej przez siebie samego powieści Предтеча (Прачечная человеческих душ). Stanowi ona świadectwo rozstania ideowego Sorokina z koncepcjami Marksa oraz ideą rewolucyjną.

The paper aims at analyzing the importance of national identity in the selected works by Vladimir Sorokin and Viktor Pelevin. Both writers place significant emphasis on presenting the possible consequences of the present social changes. Pelevin predicts the unification of the world’s biggest countries into a homogenous structure based on people’s recognition. On the other hand, Sorokin forecasts the division of the present states into smaller structures, which will need to (re)construct their own identity. The interpretation is complemented with relevant ideas of Hegel and Fukuyama.

В статье анализируется проблема бессмертия в контексте явления повседневности. В качестве примеров приводятся прежде всего произведения современных русских писателей-фантастов и авторов, которые используют в своем творчестве фантастические мотивы: Владимира Сорокина (День опричника, Сахарный Кремль, Манарага), Виктора Пелевина (Шлем ужаса, Любовь к трём цукербринам), Анны Старобинец (Живущий), Бориса Акунина-Григория Чхартишвили (Хэппи-энд), Дмитрия Глуховского (Будущее), а также фильм Александра Зельдовича (сценарий в соавторстве с Вл. Сорокиным) Мишень. Независимо от принятой концепции, все авторы указывают, что бессмертие – это по многим причинам проклятие человечества. Вместо попыток стать Богом, люди должны сосредоточиться на том, чтобы не потеряться в уже существующей реальности.
The paper aims at analyzing the question of immortality in the context of everyday life. The exemplary works include the ones written by contemporary Russian fantasy and science fiction authors, who deploy the relevant motifs: Vladimir Sorokin (Day of the Oprichnik, Kremlin Made of Sugar, Manaraga), Viktor Pelevin (The Helmet of Horror, Love for three Zuckerbrins), Anna Starobinets (The Living), Boris Akunin-Grigori Chkhartishvili  (Happy end), Dmitry Glukhovsky (The Future) and the film of Alexander Zeldovich (and V. Sorokin as the scriptwriter) entitled Target. Regardless of the applied convention the authors indicate that immortality is a curse for humankind for many reasons. Instead of trying to become God human beings should focus on retaining the already existing reality.
W artykule analizowany jest problem nieśmiertelności w kontekście codzienności. W charakterze przykładów przytaczane są przede wszystkim utwory współczesnych rosyjskich pisarzy fantastów i autorów, którzy wykorzystują w swojej twórczości motywy fantastyczne: Władimira Sorokina (Dzień oprycznika, Cukrowy Kreml, Manaraga), Wiktora pielewina (Hełm grozy, Miłosć do trzech Zuckerbrinów), Anny Starobiniec (Żyjący), Borysa Akunina-Grigorija Czchartiszwili (Happy end), Dmitrija Głuchowskiego (FUTU.RE) oraz film Aleksandra Zeldowicza (scenariusz we współautorstwie z Władimirem Sorokinem) Tarcza. Niezależnie od przyjetej konwencji, wszyscy autorzy wskazują, że nieśmiertelność - to pod wieloma wzglęgami przekleństwo ludzkości. Zamiast prób dorównania Bogu, ludzie powinni skupić się na tym, by nie pogubić sie w świecie już istniejącym.

The paper aims to introduce research in the field of the literary imagology and text semiotics. It focuses on the analysis of the creation of “autoimage”, or rather a self-image, and “hereroimage”, or a counter-mage, the image of otherness, as a means of shaping national identity, by interpreting the artistic texts written by the Czech writer Jáchym Topol and the Russian writer Vladimir Sorokin. It pays attention particularly to their novels from the first decade of the 21st century. The texts will be compared in a broader context of social discourse. Moreover, it will address the issue of the disproportion between the intensity of attention of one nation to another (Czech-Russian and Russian-Czech) and the differences in the perception of cultural distance.

The present paper aims at presenting the ambiguity of spare time and service in Vladimir Sorokin’s Day of the Oprichnik in the context of the fictional totalitarian system of the New Middle Ages and the historical atrocity of the Nazi and Soviet history. The proposed interpretation has been based on Giorgio Agamben’s reflections on the individual’s status under the exceptional circumstances of an extremely oppressive regime. The analysis has led the author to conclude the imminent and omnipresent blurring and overlapping of the intimate and the public in Sorokin’s book. Moreover, Day of the Oprichnik may be seen as a rich universe of intertextual references interweaving into a complex picture of a human being disappearing in the uniform crowd of state officers.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zagadnienia problematyki dobrostanu i katastrof w odniesieniu do twórczości Pitirima A. Sorokina, dwudziestowiecznego socjologa amerykańskiego, politycznego emigranta, jednego z prezydentów Amerykańskiego Towarzystwa Socjologicznego, który przyczynił się do utworzenia kierunku, określanego współcześnie mianem socjologii działań pozytywnych, czy działań prospołecznych. Punktem wyjścia są rozważania na temat dobrostanu i szczęścia społecznego, cyklicznego rozwoju społecznego z fazami kryzysów i katastrof. Omówione jest prawo pozytywnej i negatywnej polaryzacji społecznej oraz propozycja Sorokina w krzewieniu oraz wzmacnianiu postaw twórczego altruizmu jako sposobowi przezwyciężania sytuacji kryzysowych. Refleksja teoretyczna została uzupełniona o najnowszą literaturę przedmiotu.
The aim of the article is to present the issue of social well-being and catastrophes in relation to the works of Pitirim A. Sorokin, the 20th-century American sociologist, political emigrant, one of the Presidents of the American Sociological Association, who contributed to the creation of the field, nowadays referred to as the sociology of positive actions or prosocial actions. The starting point is reflection on social well-being and happiness, cyclical social development with phases of crises and catastrophes. The law of positive and negative social polarisation is discussed as well as Sorokin’s proposal in promoting and strengthening the attitudes of creative altruism as a means of overcoming crisis situations. The theoretical reflection has been supplemented with the latest literature on the subject.
