Opis:
Traditional forest management as coppicing and coppicing-with-standard are recently considered as beneficial for biodiversity in woodlands. Cessation of coppicing leads to changes in stand structure and often loss of biodiversity. In contemporary Polish forestry coppicing is not applied, however some stands of coppice origin persist in Silesia until present. The overgrown coppice oak forests that cover the southern slopes at the foothills of the Sudetes Mountains (Silesia, Central Europe) are considered to be Euro-Siberian steppic woods with a Quercus sp. habitat (91I0): a priority habitat in the European Union, according to the Natura 2000 system. They support one of the largest populations of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis Crantz) in Poland. In this study we investigated the relation of stand structure and trees parameters with environmental variables. The results showed considerable variability of stand volume, tree density and stems’ size correlated mostly with soil texture, but not nutrient content. We attributed it to soil dryness which seems to be the crucial factor controlling growth of trees. The natural regeneration of trees concentrated mostly on non-exposed sites on less acidic soils, but seedlings of wild service tree were present almost exclusively on most insolated sites, with shallow acidic soils. However, the regeneration of trees in sapling stage was restrained by browsing. Results suggest that maintaining of Sorbus torminalis requires protection against browsing, and some kind of active management is necessary to retain the observed stand structure with high proportion of wild service trees in stands on more fertile soils.

Opis:
Coppice management system uses the ability of trees to produce shoots from felled stumps. A modification of this type of management is the system of so called coppice with standards where low−forest individuals grow along with single, high−forest trees originated from seeds. Both types of silvicultural systems have been used in Central Europe since Middle Ages supplying small assortments of wood and tanbark. The economic changes that took place in the 1700s initiated conversion of coppice forests into high−forest ones. A brief renaissance of coppice system occurred in 1850−1900 as a result of rapid growth in the demand for oak tanbark, which overtime was gradually replaced by synthetic materials. Today there is a return to coppice management, this however being the result of increased nature protection efforts. Withdrawal from coppice cuts causes increased shading of the forest floor and, in consequence, a decline in biological diversity following disappearance of thermophilous and heliophilous animal and herb species. Restoration of coppicing or similar forms of management restrains their extinction. In Poland, coppice management is practically unknown, however in the Pogórze Kaczawskie (Sudety Mountains) there have preserved oak coppice stands – the remains of the former German management. Such stands abandon with rare and protected species of forest floor vegetation and a relatively numerous population of wild service. The experiences of other countries indicate that preservation of such species−rich and very specific plant communities will probably require very active treatments.

Opis:
We performed a detailed overall field survey of all specimens of the wild service tree Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz in the research area in the Hádecká planinka National Nature Reserve. This research area, with an area of 80 ha, contains one of the largest populations of the tree in Europe. In all, 1713 specimens were found. This study provides a detailed description of the wild service tree population in the area. The basic biometric parameters (height, GBH, social position, fertility) of thepopulation were assessed. The main emphasis of our analysis was to evaluate the population's age structure. We used estimates of age structure based on the Chapman-Richards growth function to perform this evaluation. During the past twenty years, the natural regeneration of the wild service tree in the nature reserve has decreased considerably. At an experimental plot where a high forest was converted to a coppice with standards, regeneration occurred over 75% of the area. Root suckers were found at the beginning of the observation period. After 2–3 years, generative regeneration occurred.

Opis:
The objective of this work was to evaluate the occurrence of two strictly protected vascular plant species in managed stands of submontane acidophilous oak forests (Luzulo luzuloidis – Quercetum petraeae Hilitzer 1932 association) in the Sudeten foothills (Lower Silesia, Poland). During the study, the most important stand parameters influencing the occurrence of the wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz) and the orchid sword-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia (L.) Fritsch) were ascertained. The stands ranged from 50 to 130 years of age and were dominated by sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.), which comprised 5–100% of trees. Both of the protected plant species were observed in 10% of the examined plots with the most favorable type of forest stand for sword-leaved helleborine as well as the wild service tree being clearly dominated by sessile oak (portion of oak above 80%). The analysis showed that the wild service tree was found in pure oak stands, whereas sword-leaved helleborine was also recorded in mixed stands aged 50–80 years. The increased frequency of sword-leaved helleborine was associated with a higher portion of oak in the tree layer. The results suggest that the modern silviculture practices, “close-to-nature” silviculture, transform pure oak forest into mixed forest and allow for natural expansion of hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) as well as beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), which can induce the gradual disappearance of the orchid and the wild service tree in submontane acidophilous oak forests. Restoring semi-natural pure oak stands should play a significant role in supporting both protected species in submontane acidophilous oak forests of the Sudeten Region.

Opis:
The wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis L.) is a very rare tree species in Poland, which also represents the north-eastern border of its natural range. The majority of this species’ stands is found in Wielkopolska. This study was aimed at examining the relationships between growth and climate for trees of the species Sorbus torminalis L. growing in the Wielkopolski National Park and the forest district Pniewy (Wielkopolska). Samples for the analysis were taken from 63 trees. However, taking into account the missing growth rings and difficult identification of the tree-ring borders in sapwood, only ca. 30% of the samples could be synchronized and dated accurately. Applying classic methods of dendrochronological dating, a 94-year STW chronology was constructed, spanning the years 1920–2013. The chronology, in turn, was used as a basis for dendroclimatological analyses including correlation, response function and pointer years. Climatic data used in the analyses came from the meteorological station in Poznań; providing air temperature and precipitation for a period of 66 years (1948–2013) and 48 years of insolation data (1966–2013). Insolation had the highest negative and precipitation the highest positive impact on the annual growth in May and June. Positive pointer years could be linked to humid months with low insolation during the growth season, while negative pointer years are characterized by deficient precipitation, a large number of sunny hours and high air temperatures in the summer months.

The subject of the study was a population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland at the north-eastern limit of the species distribution. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in the Forest District of Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals of variable age classes up to about 19 years old. Six polymorphic gene loci: MDH-B, ME-A, 6PGD-B, ADH-B, PGM-A, PGM-B were studied in 532 individuals recruited post-fencing and 21 potentially parental, adult trees. The analysis showed similarly high levels of genetic diversity within both subsets of individuals but there was also a noticeable change in genetic structure between them. Detailed genetic analysis of the post-fencing recruits revealed lack of significant differences between different age groups based on DBH within the fenced plot.

The subject of the study was a dynamic population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in Forest District Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals. The spatial structure of population and some basic individual traits of trees were recorded, then the growing space of individual trees was examined. The following measures of tree growing space were investigated: crown diameter and projection area, and tree volume. The spatial structure of population was non-random, and there was evidence for effects of population density on tree performance. The observations have to be continued in order to describe optimal growing space of wild service tree; the results could be used to improve in situ conservation of this rare and valuable species.

Opis:
The paper presents the proposal of a strategy of conservation of genetic resources of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) in Polish forests. Some results of the recent studies on distribution, resources and genetic variability of wild service tree in Poland that make a scientific base of the programme are presented. Both in situ and ex situ methods should be applied in conservation of genetic resources of S. torminalis. Conservation affords should first to be focused on forest management oriented in favor of wild service tree (e.g. logging intervention, competition control, preparing of favorable sites for new establishments). Further, in situ measures should include selection of conservation areas (natural gene reserves) and preserving trees of the best quality (protected genotypes). These objects would provide seeds for new establishments and to feed populations of small size. The genotypes of the selected earlier preserving trees (about 250–300) would be protected in ex situ conservation objects – seedling and clonal seed orchards. These plantations would also provide seeds needed for future establishments. The genotypes of endangered populations or single trees of S. torminalis could be preserved in the Forest Gene Bank in Kostrzyca.

In this paper we focus on anatomic structure of the outer cellular layers of the fruit of Sorbus torminalis. We have confirmed the theory of existing of multilayered epidermis providing developmental, histogenetic evidence. The studies were made from blooming time (ovules) to fully ripen fruits, using various histological techniques and microscope types. The multilayered epidermis is derived from successive tangential divisions of cells of initially single-layered epidermis commencing about two weeks after full bloom. The subsequent epidermal layers result from division of cells of epidermal meristem. The mature fruits – about 12 weeks after full bloom – are covered with four – to five-layered epidermis; each layer with its own cuticle. The lenticels developed beneath stomata from phellogen which is not in continuity with the epidermal meristem. Measurements of cuticular membranes thicknesses during development were also made.
