Humans, like every other living organism, are dependant on solar energy. If solar energy is to be used consciously, whether directly or stored, there is a need for precise assessment. The bigger the accuracy of the assessment, the greater the benefits of the application of solar energy will be. The simplicity and ease of application of a tool for such predictions would lead to solar energy resources assessment on a large scale. This would result in greater awareness of the potential of the sun energy and application of the solar energy on a larger scale, with all the benefits of using renewable energy resources.

A consideration connected with the possibilities of obtaining solar energy depending on external conditions, such as: the latitude ϕ, the solar declination δ, the hour angle ω was performed. The operation of photovoltaic modules in very cloudy conditions as well as under clear sky was taken into consideration. The results of the measurements of radiation power density that reaches the surface of the photovoltaic receiver for its different positions, for the geographic location of the cities of Poznań and Playa del Ingles and for different time periods (yearly and daily) are presented in a graphical form.

Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants are an inexhaustible and clean source of electricity and heat. The development of civilization, resulting in a constant increase in the demand for electricity and the prospect of fossil fuels depletion, including coal and oil, forces us to seek new sources of energy and invest in the renewable energy sources. The development of technology and the policy of the European Union have a positive impact on the development of renewable energy sources and the increase in the installed capacity. One of the ways of obtaining electricity from renewable sources is through the photovoltaic cells. Computer software is becoming helpful in designing the photovoltaic installations. Simulations enable conducting the economic analysis and selection of the best possible installation parameters. This enables the best use of the available conditions to obtain the largest production of electricity. The article presents a project of a photovoltaic installation for a single-family building using the BlueSol Design software.

Solar energy constitutes superior renewable source due to its availability, natural distribution and no necessity for transportation. It can be designed to fulfill the requirements of power demands, and can work in synchronization with battery banks and diesel generators or any other power source to provide a continuous and stable power. Solar energy is already one of the best solutions to fulfill power demands. A solar thermal collector is a key element for the collection and conversion of solar energy into thermal energy. There are different types of solar collectors, the most important one is the conventional 'Flat-Plate' kind, which absorbs the incident radiation and converts it to thermal energy. The main objective of this work is to study the effect of Titanium Oxide (TiO2) and Zinc Oxide (ZnO) water-based nanofluids on the performance of solar flat plate collector. In order to achieve this objective, three identical flat plat solar collectors were used with appropriate instrumentations necessary to experimentally calculate their performance. The working fluid in the first collector was pure water, while in the second collector, it was Titanium Oxide water-based nanofluid and in the third one – Zinc Oxide water-based nanofluid. Two different values of volume fraction of both oxides were used as well. It was found that the addition of Titanium Oxide and Zinc Oxide nanoparticles leads to an increase in the efficiency of the solar collector. The efficiency of the collector was found to be maximum over all values of (Tin – Tamb) when a 0.2% volume fraction of Titanium Oxide was used with a maximum efficiency of 40%, followed by the case of 0.6% volume fraction of Titanium Oxide. Furthermore, zinc oxide caused a maximum improvement in the performance of solar flat plate collector when 0.6% was used, followed by 0.2% concentration. Finally, it was found that titanium oxide is characterized by more pronounced improvement in the performance of solar flat plate collector.

Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a simple and low-cost method of increasing water quality. However, it takes about 6 hours of exposure to solar radiation. The elimination of harmful pathogenic germs from drinking water can be accelerated using a combination of sun disinfection and nanotechnology. In this study, a hybrid water purification technique using solar water disinfection, Titanium Oxide (TiO2), and natural mineral clays was investigated. TiO2, natural kaolin clay nanoparticles, and a mixture of TiO2 and natural clay were added to contaminated wastewater containers at different concentrations. After that, the containers were exposed to sun light for different time intervals. Samples were then collected from all tests to measure the total counts of Total Coliform and Escherichia coli (E. coli) using the IDEXX system. The results showed that the addition of TiO2 and natural kaolin clay to wastewater with solar water disinfection reduced the total count of the pathogenic microorganisms and decreased the time needed time for the disinfection process compared to using solar energy alone. The results also showed that the optimum concentration of the TiO2, which yielded the shortest purification time and lowest levels of pathogenic microorganisms, was 0.006 g/ml. In co ntrast, the most effective concentratio n of natural clay was 0.0015 g/ml. Moreover, the results showed that the optimum concentration of the mixture of TiO2 and natural clay, which speeds up the purification time an d lowest the level of pathogen ic microorganisms was 0.006 g/ml for TiO2 and 1.2 g/ml for the natural clay.

The manuscript compares the thermal efficiency of solar collectors with various types of the active surface. The research was carried out on a specially constructed measuring stand that maintains repeatable and constant conditions for measuring collectors’ thermal parameters. The research results show that a collector's active surface roughening allows for about 12% increase in its thermal efficiency, regardless of whether the collector surface is metallic (raw) or coated with chromium black. The highest increase in thermal efficiency was observed for a collector covered with a chromium oxide plasma-coating, whereby the collector surface was subjected to abrasive blasting. Approximately 19% increase in thermal efficiency was achieved in comparison to the base-collector (copper with a smooth surface - raw surface).
W artykule wyznaczono i porównano sprawność cieplną kolektorów słonecznych o różnej powierzchni czynnej wykonanej z miedzi, aluminium i stali nierdzewnej o różnym stanie powierzchni: polerowanej, handlowej, chropowatej i z natryskaną powłoką. Badania przeprowadzono na specjalnie zbudowanym stanowisku pomiarowym, pozwalającym zachować powtarzalne i stałe warunki pomiarów parametrów cieplnych kolektorów. Z badań wynika, że samo schropowacenie powierzchni czynnej kolektora spowodowało około 12% wzrost jego sprawności. Największy wzrost sprawności cieplnej otrzymano dla kolektora miedzianego pokrytego plazmowo tlenkiem chromu, otrzymano 19 % wzrost sprawności cieplnej w porównaniu do kolektora bazowego (miedzianego o powierzchni handlowej - „surowej”).

For economic growth of nation, the energy plays an important role. The excessive use of fossil fuels results the increase in global warming and depleting the resources. Due to this reason, the renewable energy sources are creating more attraction for researchers. In renewable energy sector, solar energy is the most abundant and clean source of energy. In solar thermal systems, solar air heater (SAH) is the main system which is used for heating of air. As it is simple in construction and cheaper in cost, it is of main interest for the researchers. The concept of first law and second law of thermodynamics is used for the study of the energy and exergy analysis respectively. The energy analysis is of great importance for the study of process effectiveness while the exergetic analysis is another significant concept to examine the actual behavior of process involving various energy losses and internal irreversibility. For efficient utilization of solar energy, the exergy analysis is very important tool for optimal design of solar air heaters. The aim of the present work is to review the works related to energy and exergy analysis of various types of solar air heaters and to find out the research gap for future work.

The aim of this article is to present designing methodology of solar installation for hot water, which allows us to determine the maximum benefit of a solar system. The complicated process of designing solar installation, is based mostly on the solar exposure conditions and hot water demand. Therefore, designing a particular solar system is a multi-objective task and should be performed carefully. Based on the proposed methodology, a conceptual model of the solar system for the swimming pool in Tarnów is presented. Designed solar installation was assumed to cover the demand of the object for domestic hot water consumption by 40% during the year. As a result, 270 vacuum-tube solar collectors were selected. The various stages of the design of solar installations, as well as a detailed economic analysis with the determination of the profitability of investments in two variants are discussed. In both assumed variants the payback period was quite satisfactory. Also, the sensitivity analysis was conducted and the main factors affecting the return of investment were determined.
