Opis:
Concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) is a photovoltaic technology that generates electricity from sunlight. Contrary to conventional photovoltaic systems, it uses lenses to focus the sunlight onto small, but highly efficient, multijunction solar cells. Two modules of CPV with a capacity of 6.4 kW (3.2 kW for each) were imported from AzurSpace Solar Power GMBH (Germany) and installed in Middle East University, Jordan, for testing purposes as a pilot project for this niche technology. It is worth mentioning that the installation of the units had been carried out by the faculty members. A range of technical obstacles were encountered in the process due to unclear instructions/steps from the manufacturer. A series of maintenance techniques and corrective measures were implemented in the system after one year of installation since the power output was unsatisfactory. Accordingly, the units were dismantled, and various procedures were conducted in order to ensure that the conditions of the system were on optimum level. In this paper, technical reviews and preventive setup were explained and presented.

Opis:
Recently, high efficient solar power generation is required because eco-awareness is increasing. High efficient generation becomes possible by focusing sunlight on electric generating element, i.e. CPV (Concentrator photovoltaic). Although the concentrator is used for focusing sunlight, it demands large spherical surface with high solar reflectance, fine accuracy and lightweight. Aluminum is considered as suitable material for concentrator. However, mirror-like processing on large spherical surface is very difficult. Therefore, new polishing technology for aluminum was developed and evaluated in this paper.Main objective is to obtain high solar reflectance by improving surface roughness. As a trial study, workpiece was not large spherical but small and flat. Firstly, the polishing tool which attached polishing cloth was developed.Optimum polishing cloth for tool was investigated by trial and error approach. When workpiece was heated before starting polishing, a number of oxides were adhered to polishing cloth and surface roughness was improved efficiently. Then optimum polishing condition was decided by using design of experiments method. Finally, solar reflectance on polished surface was measured and evaluated. It is concluded from these results that (1) the developed polishing technology was effective for processing the mirror-like surface on the surface of aluminum, (2) 82% solar reflectance was obtained with developed polishing technology by improving surface roughness of workpiece.

Opis:
For a solar photovoltaic power system on a university campus, the electricity generated by the system meets the campus load, and the extra electricity is delivered to the grid. Generally, the price of the photovoltaic system is cheaper than that of the utility power system. The full use of solar electricity can reduce the electricity cost of the school. The deep belief network is used to predict solar photovoltaic generation and electricity load, and the gap is found. According to the gap, the power loads on the campus are adjusted to improve the utilization rate of solar power generation. Through the practical application of Changqing Campus of Qilu University of Technology in China, it is found that the utilization rate of solar photovoltaic power generation effectively improved from 91.24% in 2017 to 98.16% in 2019, and the annual electricity is saved by 68 610 yuan (in 2019).

Opis:
The variable renewable wind and solar resources have experienced a significant growth on its rate of deployment as a clean and competitive alternative for conventional power sources in Jordan. However, the variability of these sources have brought many technical challenges to grids. This paper presents a hybrid system that provides a firma capacity and improves dispatchability with an interesting financial perspective. This hybrid system includes a wind farm and a concentrated solar power plant with thermal energy storage. The performance analysis was conducted in terms of final yield and capacity factor, while the economic analysis investigated the levelized cost of electricity LCOE. The hybrid plant was simulated and optimized using TRNSYS 17 energy simulation software, minimizing the LCOE and considering a capacity factor higher than 65% as a constraint. Solar multiple and storage size were considered as decision variables. A strong complementarity between wind and direct normal solar radiation was observed in the selected location in Jordan, which emphasizes the attractiveness of the selected hybrid system. The optimal configuration of the CSP-wind hybrid system was obtained with a solar field of a 2.6 solar multiple and a 5 hours energy storage. The achieved capacity factor was 94%, and the LCOE is lower than those resulted for standalone CSP plants.

In the work, the authors explain the concept of operation of an autonomous photovoltaic system with particular focus on the role of battery charging controllers. Didactic experiments that complement the theoretical knowledge on the construction and the principles of operation of photovoltaic systems of the “off-grid” type were conducted. The laboratory set described provides the capabilities to analyze the operation of small autonomous photovoltaic systems which are analogous to complex systems that are used in real settings. The systems are especially popular in Poland and that is why it is important to deepen the knowledge on them. Particular attention is put in the article on the cooperation of photovoltaic elements with energy storage devices (condensers and batteries) and with the load points with the use of battery charging controllers (serial and shunt) and of a module protecting the energy storage devices against discharging. The review of different solutions is complemented with sample measurement tests and with the test results for the tested system of the “off-grid” type.

Sunlight is converted into electricity and heat simultaneously with the help of PV thermal panels. It is examined that the efficiency of the PV/T panel is higher than the separate PV panels and solar thermal collectors’ efficiency. The electricity conversion-efficiency for a PV system is about 6% to 15% and in moreover cases 85% of the incoming solar energy is either reflected or absorbed as heat energy. Now a day’s Renewable energy has become a hot topic. The energy researchers day by day making advanced researches to make this type of system a useable one. Non-renewable sources will be approximately finished within next 100-150 years. So this type of energy is very important for everyone. Normally researches are made on producing electricity from renewable sources like sun-light, wind energy, tidal energy and etc. In this paper there is a compact review of solar photovoltaic thermal system. The performance of the solar cell decreases with the increasing of temperature. Both the electrical efficiency and the power output of PV module depend on the operating temperature. Photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collectors, also known as hybrid PV/T systems are systems in which sunlight is converted into thermal and electrical energy both. This paper contains a combination of basic and advanced hybrid PV/T systems that are usable in Asian region.

The utilization of solar radiation to obtain high-temperature heat can be realized by multiplying it on the illuminated surface with solar concentrating technologies. High-temperature heat with significant energy potential can be used for many technological purposes, e.g. the production of heat, cold or electricity. The following paper presents the results of the experimental study, on the operation of the parabolic linear absorber in the parabolic concentrator solar system. The parabolic mirror with an aperture of 1 m and a focal length of 0.25 m focuses the simulated radiation onto a tubular absorber with a diameter of 33.7 mm, which is placed in a vacuum tube. The length of the absorber is 1 m. The installation is illuminated by the solar simulator, which allows to carry out tests under constant and repeatable conditions. The simulator consists of 18 metal halide lamps, with a nominal power of 575 W each with a dimming possibility of up to 60%. The paper presents preliminary results of heat absorption by the analysed absorber, temperature increment, collected heat flux, and the pressure drop crucial for the optimization of the absorber geometry.

The development and growing availability of modern technologies, along with more and more severe environment protection standards which frequently take a form of legal regulations, are the reason why attempts are made to find a quiet and economical propulsion system not only for newly built watercraft units, but also for modernised ones. Correct selection of the propulsion and supply system for a given vessel affects significantly not only the energy efficiency of the propulsions system but also the environment – as this selection is crucial for the noise and exhaust emission levels. The paper presents results of experimental examination of ship power demand performed on a historic passenger ship of 25 m in length. Two variants, referred to as serial and parallel hybrid propulsion systems, were examined with respect to the maximum length of the single-day route covered by the ship. The recorded power demands and environmental impact were compared with those characteristic for the already installed conventional propulsion system. Taking into account a high safety level expected to be ensured on a passenger ship, the serial hybrid system was based on two electric motors working in parallel and supplied from two separate sets of batteries. This solution ensures higher reliability, along with relatively high energy efficiency. The results of the performed examination have revealed that the serial propulsion system is the least harmful to the environment, but its investment cost is the highest. In this context, the optimum solution for the ship owner seems to be a parallel hybrid system of diesel-electric type.

The free convection of the water and air over the globe induces evaporation of standing water and the generation of wind, respectively. The ratio of the corresponding heat transfer coefficients is shown to be equal to the ratio of solar power going into evaporation/precipitation and into wind generation. The present work provides a justification for the estimate on wind power reported by M. King Hubbert and also that wind generation on a global scale is about two-order magnitudes less than the solar power responsible for rainfall. This paper resolves the existing ambiguity in the estimates of wind power over the globe.

Opis:
In countries, such as Australia, with often vast distances between settlements and the mains power grid, insular power systems are the only solution. The most common of them is diesel generation that is relatively inexpensive, however it can have long term financial and environmental implications such as a large production of green house gases (GHGs). In the paper on an example of a remote water pump station, we compare microgrids of diesel generation only, combination of it with solar generation and an addition to the latter of a battery storage. It is demonstrated that addition of renewable energy to diesel generation can be a viable alternative for insular power systems, resulting in drastic reduction of diesel fuel consumption, emission of GHGs and reduction of total operating and maintenance costs.

Renewable power sources (RPS) play an ever growing role in power production. With the green power cost decreasing, the RPS share (including hydro power plants) in power production grows fast. Using RPS in supplying power to various facilities reduces the CO2 emission into atmosphere, thus reducing the greenhouse effect and being a fundamental factor in fighting the global warming. Every type of RPS possesses certain drawbacks that need to be eliminated. RPS units do have disadvantages, too, including low efficiency coefficient, and low specific power. However, there is the need for specific technological conditions. The present work describes the issue of photoelectric module heating. Photoelectric module heating results in both lower output voltage and module aging acceleration. The present work offers the method for assessing the practicability of development and implementation of solar power cell module active cooling systems, based on the photoelectric module daily performance schedules, drawing on statistic meteorological data collected over many years, and also it presents the brief description of various methods for cooling photoelectric modules.

This paper studies the environmental impact of two different forms of solar power generation in Thailand – that of multicrystalline silicon solar cells, and that of thin film amorphous silicon solar cells. It takes as its study two of the largest solar cell power plants of their kind in Thailand; a multicrystalline silicon plant in the north (generating 90 MW) and a thin film amorphous silicon plant in the centre (generating 55 MW). The Life Cycle Assessment tool (LCA) was used to assess the environmental impact of each stage of the process, from the manufacture of the cells, through to their transportation, installation and eventual recycling. The functional unit of the study was the generation of 1 kWh of power transmitted and distributed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA). The environmental impact results were calculated in terms of eco-points (Pt) per functional unit of 1 kWh. The characterised data for 1 kWh of solar power generation was then compared with data for 1 kWh of combined cycle and thermal power generation (both in Thailand), using the same set of characterisation factors. After analyzing the results, both forms of solar power energy generation were found to impact upon the studied categories of Human Health, Ecosystem Quality and Resource Depletion, whilst also highlighting the importance of the solar cell module recycling process in decreasing the overall environmental impact. When the two solar cell technologies were compared, the overall impact of the multicrystalline silicon solar cell was found to be higher than that of the thin film amorphous silicon solar cell. Furthermore, when assessing the overall impact against non-renewable power generating technologies such as combined cycle and thermal power generation, the thin film amorphous silicon solar cells were found to have the lowest environmental impact of all technologies studied.

The development of a solar energy is associated with the development of new technologies, which maximize the utilization of the solar radiation. One direction is the solar radiation-heat conversion in the high temperature environment. From a thermodynamic point of view, this open new opportunities for power generation. The conversion, however, requires high concentration ratio of the solar radiation. There are many concentration techniques, but this article focuses on concentration on the top of the solar tower due to reflection from the heliostats’ field. Such a system has several advantages in comparison to the small scale concertation systems. Mainly one high capacity power generation unit can be constructed. One of the main part of such system is heliostats’ field. Article defines the concept of heliostat and presents the principles of its operation and its assignment in the Central Receiver Concentrating Solar Power (CR CSP). Different types of heliostats have been investigated and categorized. Factors that directly or indirectly affect the type, size and price of heliostats’ parts have been described. The article presents a problem of the profitability of CR CSP and its relation with CAPEX of the heliostats’ field. Detailed heliostats’ requirements which must be fulfilled have been listed. Those have been divided into three groups: operational, optical and mechanical. Three significantly different by scale and type of operation examples of heliostats have been presented and parametrized in tabular form.
