Opis:
This paper presents an overview of the literature research on the benefits of biocarbon (biochar) as an important part of sustainable agriculture and carbon farming. The main objective was to familiarise the reader with the literature findings on the effects of biocarbon application on the environment, soil, soil organic mater, soil microorganisms, and impact on crop yields. On the basis of the research presented, it can be concluded that the incorporation of biocarbon into the soil generally has a positive effect on soil fertility, but that proper application is required (mainly its application together with fertilization). The quality, properties, and agricultural usefulness of the biochar depend on the raw material that has been subjected to the pyrolysis process, as well as the temperature and time of. The findings of the paper are based on the literature review on the subject.

Opis:
This study used multivariate statistics including cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the variability and key indicators causing changes in soil quality in Tram Chim National Park, Dong Thap province, Vietnam. Soil samples were collected in the dry season at the habitats of Ischaemum rugosum (CM), Panicum repens (CO), Nelumbo nucifera (LS), Eleocharis dulcis (NO), Oryza rufipogon (LM), Rice field (RL), Melaleuca cajuputi (T) in two layers: A (0–20 cm) and B (20–40 cm). The parameters of pH, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total acidity (TA), organic matter (OM), total iron (Fe) and exchanged aluminum (Al3+) were used to assess soil quality. The results showed that soil pH was low in both A and B layers. Fe and Al were both high, and the concentrations of these metals in layer A were higher than those in layer B. The OM content was medium while the TN and TP levels were very low. Most of the soil quality indicators tended to decrease with the depth (except for TA). The results of CA analysis showed that there was almost no major change in soil quality between the two soil layers; however, the soil quality in rice field habitat was different from other habitats. The cause may be due to human impact in adding fertilizers/pesticides during farming practices. The PCA results showed at least five influencing factors, explaining 99.7% and 99.9% of soil quality variation in A and B layers. The Al3+, TA, OM, and TP parameters had the main influence on the soil quality of layer A. Meanwhile, the pH, Al3+, TA, TN, Fet indicators had influence on the soil quality of layer B. These indicators need to be future surveyed to assess the evolution of soil quality in the study area.

Opis:
Soil organic matter content (SOM) is used e.g. in soil classification and erosion evaluation. However, its value depends on soil specimen preparation and test method so it is useful to deal with these issues. Totally 150 specimens of soils CI, MS (from Bielsko-Biała, Poland) and different 3 soils, all classified as GC (from Ujsoły, Poland) were tested. To obtain values of SOM, the oxidation method using 30% hydrogen peroxide solution (H2O2) and loss of weight on ignition method (LOI) at 800°C (LOI-800) according to Polish Standard PN-88/B-04481 and LOI at 440°C according to the ASTM D 2974-87 (LOI-440) were applied. The tests were carried out for particles smaller than 0.5 mm. For every soil, 30 specimens (every with a mass about 10 g of dry soil) were prepared from 2400 g of dried soil for 3 methods, so for every method, 10 specimens, taken from various soil amount in frame of total 800 g were prepared. The results showed that values of SOM of tested soils varied from 0.33% to 6.09%. The largest relative difference in values of SOM, caused by soil specimen preparation, was 97.63% (H2O2, soil GC) and the smallest relative difference was 1.65% (LOI-800, soil CI). The largest relative difference in values of SOM, caused by test method was 1126.53% (LOI-800 and H2O2, soil GC) and the smallest relative difference was 15.17% (LOI-800 and H2O2, soil CI). The various values of SOM caused by different test method differently classify soils from organic point of view by the ISO14688-2:2004.
Przeanalizowano wpływ przygotowania próbki gruntu i metody oznaczania na zawartość materii organicznej (SOM). W sumie przebadano 150 próbek gruntów (przygotowanych z różnej ilości gruntu) z Bielska-Białej (CI, MS) oraz z Ujsół (GC). Aby uzyskać wartości SOM zastosowano metodę utleniania 30% roztworem nadtlenku wodoru (H2O2) oraz metodę straty masy przy prażeniu (LOI) w temperaturze 800°C (LOI-800) i 440°C (LOI-440). Badania przeprowadzono dla cząstek gruntu mniejszych niż 0,5 mm. Wartości SOM wahały się od 0,33 do 6,09%. Największa względna różnica wartości SOM spowodowana przygotowaniem próbek wyniosła 97,63% (H2O2, grunt GC), a najmniejsza 1,65% (LOI-800, grunt CI). Największa względna różnica wartości SOM spowodowana metodą badania wyniosła 1126,53% (LOI-800 i H2O2, grunt GC), a najmniejsza 15,17% (LOI-800 i H2O2, grunt CI). Uzyskiwane różne wartości SOM mogą skutkować odmiennym klasyfikowaniem gruntu pod kątem organicznym.

Opis:
The main aim of this study was to determine the morphology, physical and chemical properties of permafrost-affected soils under different types of tundra in the central part of Spitsbergen. This is a preliminary part of detailed studies focused on the relationship between tundra vegetation and permafrost-affected soils in the Spitsbergen. The obtained results indicate that all the studied soils represent an early stage of formation and the main soil-forming process present in these soils is cryoturbation. Most of the studied soils are shallow and contain a high content of coarse rock fragments. Tundra vegetation type plays controlling role in the development and structure of surface soil horizons. All the studied soils are characterized by loamy texture and acidic or slightly acidic reaction, and these properties are not very different under various tundra vegetation types. The contents of soil organic matter are strongly dependent on the type of tundra vegetation. The highest soil organic matter content occurs at sites with well-developed vegetation such as heath and wet moss tundra. The high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for the surface soil horizons of the majority of the studied soils indicates that organic matter is poorly decomposed under all the studied tundra vegetation types. This is most likely related to low activity of soil microorganisms in the harsh High Arctic environment. However, the lowest carbon-to-nitrogen ratio was noted for surface soil horizons at sites covered with Arctic meadow, and this indicates that there occur the optimum conditions for soil organic matter decomposition.

Opis:
In Morocco, and particularly in the Doukkala irrigated perimeter, sugar beet rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is a major limiting factor for the productivity of this crop. The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between the frequency of Sclerotium rolfsii infestation and the quantity of viable sclerotia in the soil on the one hand, and with the different physicochemical parameters of the soil in cropped sugar beet fields on the other hand. In total, 1794 soil samples were collected during a four years period in the whole irrigated perimeter. These samples were analyzed for their sclerotial content. In addition, laboratory analysis of physico-chemical parameters was performed for 94 sugar beet fields in 2019. The study showed that the relative frequency of infestation by Sclerotium rolfsii and the number of viable sclerotia oscillate inversely and present a relative frequency of 45.7, 57.3, 42.3 and 49.5% for 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively, and a number of sclerotia of 2.01, 1.65, 2.11 and 1.25 in 250 g of soil for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. The study showed that the number of viable sclerotia was positively correlated with clay and silt content, soil pH, Mg, K, Fe, Cu, and Mn and negatively correlated with sand, SOM, EC, CaCO3, Zn, B, Ca, NH4 and NO3 contents. The observed decrease in viable sclerotia between 2016 and 2019 can be attributed to the decrease of Fe and Cu in the soil. It is possible that SOM intervenes with its humified fraction in the neutralization of the redox potential of Feand Cu which are involved in the production of sclerotia under oxidative stress. The good control of fertilization, especially organic, allows limiting the production of sclerotia of Sclerotium rolfsii. Data analysis allowed obtaining a significant prediction model of the number of viable sclerotia in the soil according to the physicochemical soil parameters with (R2 = 0.95 at P<0.0001) for only infested fields and (R2 = 0.87 at P<0.0001) for all the fields.

Opis:
The future of humans and our planet, and food security, require innovative insights across many sectors of the economy (industry, agriculture, forestry, science and technology development). Reducing the use of chemicals, recycling carbon and recovering nutrients, caring for soil health, producing healthy food and adapting to climate change are the main challenges facing modern agriculture. The high proportion of soils low in organic matter, combined with manure shortages in some regions of Poland, poses a serious problem for maintaining the soil’s ability to perform productive and environmental functions. The use of selectively collected biodegradable waste, which contains significant amounts of organic matter, can be a key strategy for supplementing soil organic matter deficits. Green waste, kitchen waste, plant biomass produced in agriculture are valuable materials that, when processed through energy production, should become biofertilisers in line with the circular economy. Soil micro-organisms play an important role in the decomposition of organic matter and participate in the circulation and provision of nutrients to plants. Their role also includes fixing atmospheric nitrogen, stabilising soil aggregates, participating in the formation of soil humus and detoxifying soil from harmful substances present in the soil environment. Research to date confirms that biogas plant digestate can be a valuable fertiliser and has the potential to restore soil biological quality. There are virtually no reports indicating a negative effect of the digestate on the biological quality of the soil, especially when using digestate from agricultural substrates. This fact indicates that the potential of digestate in soil regeneration is significant, given its effects on soil biology, soil carbon and nutrient provision, and soil structure. It is more difficult to assess the impact of the digestate on soil biodiversity, especially the structure of the microbial population, which is strongly dependent on a number of soil, climatic and crop influences. An important aspect this review is the presentation of research needs for the potential of using digestate to regenerate soil and stimulate its biological life.

Straw, particularly cereal straw, is a valuable by-product of crop production, which can be used for various purposes, e.g. as livestock feed and bedding or for making fuels, however it should primarily be retained on farmland in order to prevent soil organic matter (SOM) losses and thus to maintain or improve soil quality. The aim of this study was to analyze effects of the frequency of crop residues (straw) incorporation into the soil on the content of soil organic matter and on crop yields. There were the following experimental treatments: SR - straw of all crop in the rotation removed, S1 - straw of one crop per rotation incorporated, S2 - straw of two crops in the rotation incorporated, and S3 - straw of three crops incorporated into the soil (loamy sand). After 21 years of crop rotation with straw removal (SR) the SOM level in the soil slightly decreased to 14.4 g∙kg-1 soil DM, compared to that in 1997 (14.6 g∙kg-1). However, when straw of one crop (rape) per rotation was incorporated (S1) the content of SOM increased to 15.0 g∙kg-1 soil DM, and to 15.6 and 16.0 g∙kg-1 in S2 and S3 treatments, respectively. Straw retention had also a beneficial effect on the content of labile fractions of SOM (hot water extractable C and N). Grain yields and yield components of wheat and triticale, and seed yields of rape in the SR treatment were not significantly different from those obtained in S1, S2 and S3 treatments.

Opis:
Celem badań przedstawionych w niniejszym opracowaniu było poznanie długofalowych skutków środowiskowych i produkcyjnych różnej częstotliwości przyorywania słomy w zmianowaniu ozimin: rzepak-pszenica-pszenżyto. W wyniku wieloletniego (21 lat) nieprzyorywania słomy żadnej z roślin uprawianych w wymienionym zmianowaniu, zawartość w glebie próchnicy spadła z początkowej wartości 14,6 g∙kg-1 s.m. do 14,4 g∙kg1s.m. gleby, natomiast przyorywanie słomy jednej rośliny w zmianowaniu, czyli rzepaku, spowodowało zwiększenie zawartości próchnicy w badanej glebie do 15,0 g∙kg-1 s.m. gleby.
The aim of this study was to analyze long-term environmental and production effects of the frequency of straw incorporation into the soil in the rotation of winter crops: rape-wheat-triticale. After 21 years of crop rotation with straw removal the SOM level in the soil decreased to 14.4 g∙kg-1 soil DM, compared to that in 1997 (14.6 g∙kg-1). However, when straw of one crop (rape) per rotation was incorporated the content of SOM increased to 15.0 g∙kg-1 soil DM, and to 15.6 and 16.0 g∙kg-1 when straw of two and three crops, respectively, was ploughed in. Straw retention had also a beneficial effect on the content of labile fractions of SOM (hot water extractable C and N). In this study no soil liming was applied which resulted in soil pH decrease from the initial pH 6.2 to pH 5.0-5.1 at the end of the experiment. In comparison to the initial values, the soil contained more available K2O and lower amounts of P2O5 and Mg, probably due to soil acidification. Grain yields and yield components of wheat and triticale were not significantly affected by straw incorporation, but in the case of rape seed yields increased with more frequent straw incorporation. The presented results indicate, that farmers practicing non-livestock farming or simplified cereal rotations in the care of soil quality should retain on the field and plough in straw of at least one crop, or preferably two crops per rotation, as it results in the accumulation soil organic matter and thus in the improvement of biological, chemical and physical soil properties.

Understanding the spatial variability of soil organic matter (SOM) is critical for studying and assessing soil fertility and quality. This knowledge is important for soil management, which results in high crop yields at a reduced cost of crop production and helps to protect the environment. The benefits of an accurate interpolation of SOM spatial distribution are well known at the agricultural, economic, and ecological levels. It has been conducted this study for comparing and analyze different spatial interpolation methods to evaluate the spatial distribution of SOM in Sidi Bennour District, which is a semi-arid area in the irrigated scheme of the Doukkala Plain, Morocco. For conding this study, it was collected 368 representative soil samples at a depth of 0–30 cm. A portable global positioning system was used to obtain the location coordinates of soil sampling sites. The SOM spatial distribution was performed using four interpolation methods: inverse distance weighted and local polynomial interpolation as deterministic methods, and ordinary kriging and empirical Bayesian kriging as geostatistical methods. High SOM levels were concentrated in vertisols, and low SOM levels were observed in immature soils. The average SOM value was 1.346%, with moderate to high variability (CV = 35.720%). A low SOM concentration indicates a continuous possibility of soil degradation in the future. Ordinary kriging yielded better results than the other interpolation methods (RMSE = 0.395) with a semivariogram fitted by an exponential model, followed by inverse distance weighted (RMSE = 0.397), empirical Bayesian kriging (RMSE = 0.400), and local polynomial interpolation (RMSE = 0.412). Soil genetics and the strong influence of human activity are the major sources of SOM spatial dependence, which is moderate to low. Low SOM content levels (< 1.15%) were present in the southwestern and eastern parts of the digital map. This situation calls for the implementation of specific soil recovery measures.

Opis:
Soil organic matter (SOM) is considered to be the most important part in the soil. C and N and their forms are most often used to evaluate SOM. In the last decades, C indices have begun to be used to assess soil quality for C changes in SOM due to the different soil management. Since C cycle is closely related to N, there is an assumption that N indices (derived in the same way as C indices) will be sensitive to N changes in SOM under the different soil management. The objective of the study was to evaluate the extent of C and N indices on C and N changes in SOM (in Rendzic Leptosol) under the different soil management practices (1. G: grass and no fertilization – as control; 2. T: tillage; 3. T+FYM: tillage + farmyard manure; 4. G+NPK3: grass + NPK 125–50–185 kg ha-1; 5. G+NPK1: grass + NPK 100–30–120 kg ha-1) in a productive vineyard (Nitra-Dražovce; Slovakia) during the period of 13 years. The results showed that the soil organic carbon (SOC) was reduced by 26% compared to G because of intensive cultivation on one hand, but on the other hand, in T + FYM treatment no significant changes in SOC over the 13 years of the experiment were observed. A higher labile carbon (CL) content was in G+NPK3 then follows: G+NPK1 > G > T+FYM > T for topsoil (0-30 cm). In topsoil, carbon lability increased after a higher level of mineral fertilization, while in subsoil (30-60 cm) after intensive cultivation. The values of CPI for topsoil decreased in the following order: G+NPK1 > T+FYM > G+NPK3 > T. Based on CMI values, intensive C changes in the SOM due to the soil management practices were observed in T treatment. The highest accumulation of carbon and decomposable organic matter occurred in G+NPK3. Incorporation of FYM, and both rates of NPK increased values of NMI by 45, 47 and 36% respectively compared to intensive tilled treatment for topsoil. The highest values of the NPI were detected because of farmyard manure application and mineral fertilization at a higher rate (NPK3) for topsoil and because of intensive cultivation between vine rows as well as plowing of FYM for subsoil.

Since tillage technologies considerably influence soil properties and have a major impact on soil sustainability, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of conventional (CT) and reduced (RT) tillage on basic soil chemical properties at selected Slovak agricultural farms. Subsequently, the relationships between the chemical properties and soil organic matter (SOM) in both tillage technologies were ascertained. Differences in soil properties between long-term RT and CT were investigated at the adjacent plots on thirteen sites, where six soil pits were excavated on each RT and CT plots. Soil samples were collected from all pits, for each 0.1 m layers from the depth of 0.0-0.4 m. The results revealed that the regular overturn of topsoil, and thus the transfer of leached base cations to the surface layer, as well as deeper incorporation of crop residues and fertilizers in the soil cultivated conventionally has been manifested by higher values of pH, lower hydrolytic acidity (H) and the almost uniform content of base cations (mainly in the layer 0.0-0.3 m) compared to the soil cultivated by RT. Apart from H,, none of the examined sorption properties and pH differed significantly between the compared tillage technologies. Therefore, H can be considered as an important indicator of the change of basic chemical soil characteristics. While in RT, there was a significant correlation only between labile SOM fractions and basic soil chemical properties, in CT the sorption parameters and pH were influenced by labile and also stable SOM.

Opis:
The study was conducted in the Górzno and Czarny Bryńsk Forest, ranges which belong to the Brodnica Forest Dis-trict. Brunic Arenosol (Dystric) soils predominate in the Brodnica Forest Division (over 77% of the total area). The aim of this study was to analyze the granulometric composition, the organic matter content and pH values in H2O and KCl at three genetic horizons of soils (A – humus, B – sideric and C – parent material) within the crown extension of four tree species: English oak, European beech, Scots pine and Norway spruce. Silt and clay had a signifi-cantly higher share of A-horizon compared with B and C hori-zons. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces were characterized by a significantly higher percentage of sand and a significantly lower percentage of silt than soil samples col-lected under beech and pine trees. In the analyzed soil horizons, pH values increased significantly with depth regardless of tree species. Tree species had a significant effect on the pH of the analyzed soils and the organic matter content of A horizon. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces had sig-nificantly lower pH values than those collected under pine trees. Soil samples collected under the crowns of Norway spruces had significantly higher organic matter content than those collected under oak trees. There was a very high negative correlation be-tween organic matter content and the values of pH measured in 1 M KCl, and a high negative correlation between organic matter content and the values of pH measured in H2O suspension.

Opis:
Salinity stress is a serious problem in urban landscape of arid and semi arid regions. To overcome the adverse impact of salinity, the application of organic matter and plant nutrients in the growth media for improving the plant growth is essential. An experiment was conducted in order to determine the response of Salvia splendens to salinity levels and also the role of humic acid in the salt stress alleviation. In the current experiment, five salinity levels (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mM NaCl) and three humic acid (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg/l) treatments were prepared. The effects of these treatments were investigated on some growth parameters, physiological characteristics and also biochemical compounds. The results indicated that the growth parameters decreased in saline-treated than control plants. Different salinity levels significantly affected relative water content, evaporation rate and also electrolyte leakage. Salinity caused the increase in proline, malondialdehyde, sugar content, DPPH, total phenol content and decrease in chlorophyll, compare to the control plants. Application of humic acid on Salvia splendens decreased the leaf area and plant height compared to the control plants. Thus, regarding the growth parameters, it is probable that the effect of humic acid on the biochemical compounds is similar to salinity effect. The findings suggest that sage is an ornamental plant sensitive to salinity and humic acid (in the studied levels) could not alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on this plant.

Opis:
In this paper we consider the models describing the dynamics of soil organic matter transformation. The results of practical implementation of the ROMUL, CENTURY and ROTHAMSTED models are presented. These models propose theoretical approaches to the modelling of organic remains transformation based on describing physicochemical processes during humus formation with differential relations. Following the analysis, their strengths and weaknesses have been distinguished.
W tym artykule rozważamy modele opisujące dynamikę transformacji materii organicznej w glebie. Przedstawiono wyniki praktycznej realizacji modeli ROMUL, CENTURY i ROTHAMSTED. Modele te proponują teoretyczne podejścia do modelowania transformacji szczątków organicznych oparte na opisie procesów fizykochemicznych podczas formowania się próchnicy z zależnościami różnicowymi. W wyniku analizy wyróżniono ich mocne i słabe strony.

Opis:
If we want to develop farming on soil effectively and ecologically, we have to know the soil characteristics, the reasons for the potential low fertility and the ways how to eliminate them. Only this approach allows the rational utilization of the soil fund and achievement of the high effectiveness of the costs needed for the stabilization and increase of fertility and land capability. Recently, many scientific teams have focused their attention on the biochar, a lot of recommendations have been published which are dealing with its application into soil. However, the principal attention has been drawn to the impact of biochar on the particular soils and under the particular conditions. Far less information has been presented about the mutual interactions between the further significant agronomical factors in the combination with biochar. In this primary study, we analyze two new experiments established in the southwest part of Slovakia at the 1 Dolná Streda (sandy soil) and 2 Veľké Uľany (loamy soil) Localities. We discussed (1) the impact of the individual factors on the changes of soil characteristics, and (2) the impact of the individual interactions, such as: soil class – fertilization – biochar on the changes of the soil characteristics. The results indicated that the most significant factor, which influences the monitored soil parameters, is the soil class. The fertilization proved to be a factor which has a negative impact on the humus parameters; on the other hand, it improved the soil sorption. Biochar increased the content of the organic substances in soil and also its environmental effect of retention and immobilization of harmful elements and its positive effect on the soil structure was indicated. The highest frequency of the interactions between the monitored parameters related to the changes of soil characteristics was recorded in the combination fertilization x biochar, and also the soil class x fertilization x biochar.
