    The purpose of this article is to explore the religious roots of modern ethical reflection on the economy. The starting point is the well-known debate between Weber and Tawney regarding the Protestant work ethic and the rise of capitalism. According to the author, it is necessary to trace the subsequent development of this ethic, particularly in the United States, as it was a final destination for Protestant migrants who embodied the spirit of capitalism. This ultimately resulted in a different form of this spirit than what was initially proposed by Max Weber and Richard Tawney, due to the transformation of American Reformed Protestantism. The Gospel of Wealth and the Social Gospel not only revealed a different side of American capitalism at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also remain relevant in present-day discussions on the ethical aspects of the economy and business administration.

    The article is devoted to Washington Gladden, one of the leading figures of liberal Protestantism – a religious movement that developed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States. The times in which Gladden lived were a period of changes taking place in American society, such as capitalist social relations, centralizing banking sector, and developing industry. As a pastor, he also faced these changes as a journalist, leader of the social gospel movement, and creator of liberal Protestantism. Through his sermons, articles, books, and specific charitable and social activities, he aimed to realize the Kingdom of God on earth. The article an-swers questions such as how Gladden understood the church, how he imagined Christianity, and how he created liberal Protestantism. It also explores how the movement functioned and what content it conveyed.

    Walter Rauschenbusch was an important figure in American liberal Protestantism, the social gospel movement, and American theology. He served for many years as pastor of the Second German Baptist Church in New York and a professor at Rochester Theological Seminary. His most notable work was Society of Christian Social Crisis (1907), in which he set forth his ideological assumptions for Christianity in the United States. These ideas referred primarily to the vision of the Kingdom of God on Earth, which was to be instituted mainly through eliminating social inequalities and facilitated by the spread of love of neighbor and social justice. In addition, they were inspired by the figure and activities of Jesus Christ, whom the American pastor saw not only as a son of God, a prophet, and, before all, as a social activist. Hence, to act effectively, Rauschenbusch created a movement based on Christian socialism, as reflected in the Society of Christian 168 sebastian dama Socialists and later in the social gospel movement, which significantly changed not only Christianity in the United States but also the society of the country.

    Evangelization is a task and mission commissioned by Christ to the Church as an institution, but it is also the task of every member of the community of believers. Christ calls us to go with the good news wherever there is a person. Today’s human being lives in two worlds – the real one, but also in the digital one. Therefore, it is important that the process of evangelization takes place not only in a traditional way in the real world, but also that the Gospel is present in the digital world. The subject of this article is the issue of on-line evangelization, including the use of social media. The aim is to show that the presence of the Gospel in the digital world is necessary, but it carries many opportunities and threats.
    Ewangelizacja to zadanie i misja, które zostały zlecone przez Chrystusa Kościołowi jako instytucji, ale jest to także zadanie każdego członka wspólnoty wierzących. Chrystus wzywa, aby iść z dobrą nowiną wszędzie tam, gdzie jest człowiek. Współczesny człowiek żyje dziś w dwóch światach – tym realnym, ale również w tym cyfrowym. Dlatego ważne jest, aby proces ewangelizacji dokonywał się nie tylko w sposób tradycyjny w świecie realnym, ale również, aby ewangelia była obecna w świecie cyfrowym. Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest ewangelizacja w Internecie, w tym przy użyciu mediów społecznościowych. Celem jest ukazanie, iż obecność Dobrej Nowiny w świecie cyfrowym jest konieczna, ale niesie to ze sobą wiele szans, jak i zagrożeń.

    The idea of social and civilization evolution, not based on reason and science, but on the power of religion and the church, was created by Benjamin Kidd in 1894. At that time, it enjoyed global interest and contributed to the creation of a new scientific thought – sociology. Its creator was called a „social prophet,” and his work became an inspiration for thinkers and activists of the social gospel movement, led at that time by, among others, Washington Gladden, Walter Rauschenbusch, Lyman Abbott, William D.P. Bliss or Josiah Strong. At the height of his fame, Kidd’s work inspired the founders and activists of the social gospel, but was also the subject of public criticism. Over time, however, religious thought in the United States of America has undergone a metamorphosis, also in the space of the social gospel movement. Hence, the important question is whether the contemporary thought of this British sociologist is still present and plays a role in shaping the doctrine of the social gospel? Is the social evolution described by Kidd present in the dogma of contemporary liberal Protestantism? Can we still talk about social evolution according to Kidd in the context of the influence of liberal evangelism on the activities of social gospel movements? These and other questions will be answered in this article.

    Przekazane Apostołom zadanie „Idźcie więc i nauczajcie wszystkie narody…” (Mt 28,19) zostaje umocnione darem Ducha Świętego (por. Dz 2,1-12). Nowa wspólnota, kształtująca się wokół Apostołów staje się widocznym Kościołem. Jednak, dla mocy świadectwa, potrzebny jest Kościół ewangeliczny. Także współczesny świat potrzebuje ludzi Chrystusowych, cichych i pokornego serca, ludzi sumienia, gotowych odważnie świadczyć dzieła miłosierdzia. To jarzmo nie jest trudne dla tych, którzy naśladując Jezusa są łagodni i pokornego serca. Tylko chrześcijanie umocnieni Duchem Świętym są gotowi do daru z siebie i budowania wolności, pokoju i miłości. Jednak tylko sakrament pokuty i Eucharystia dają siłę do walki z grzechem w życiu osobistym i społecznym. W Kościele nie może zabraknąć przemiany wszystkich chrześcijan, i to niezależnie od ich orientacji teologicznych oraz proweniencji kościelnych. Pojednanie trzeba zawsze odnieść do siebie i swego postępowania oraz wyborów moralnych. W sakramencie pokuty następuje pojednanie z miłosiernym Ojcem oraz ludźmi, jako bracia i siostry. Eucharystia uświęca i gromadzi w jedną rodzinę, zapraszając na ucztę w pielgrzymim Domu Ojca. Jednym ze znamion negacji Ewangelii jest dramatyczny brak jedności Kościoła. Pielgrzymując w świecie Kościół staje także wobec zadania ewangelizacji polityki. Nie mniej wyzwaniem pozostaje budowanie wolności i suwerenności. Wszystko to winno być nacechowane troską o człowieka, w życiu indywidualnym oraz społecznym. W dziele przemiany świata Kościół winien być nacechowany służebnością wobec nauki i kultury.
    The mission entrusted to the Apostles: “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”(Matthew 28,19) was empowered by the gift of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 2,1-12). A new community growing around the Apostles emerges as a visible Church. However, the Church needs to live by the Gospel in order to make her message meaningful. Today’s world also needs Christ–like people who are gentle and humble in heart, the people of right conscience and prepared to bear witness through the works of mercy. This yoke is not heavy for those who, taking the example of Jesus, are gentle and humble in heart. Only those Christians who have the gift of the Holy Spirit are ready to make a gift of themselves and to build in freedom, peace and love. The sacraments of penance and of the Eucharist give strength to fight against sin in both personal and social life. The call to convert is always valid and it applies to all Christians coming from various theological orientations and traditions. The call to reconciliation is to be present in one’s moral choices. The sacrament of penance offers reconciliation with God and with people who are one’s brothers and sisters. The Eucharist sanctifies and gathers in one family, inviting all for supper in Father’s Pilgrims House. The lack of unity in the Church is a serious sign of the rejection of the Gospel message. The pilgrim Church has the task to evangelise politics and to build freedom and sovereignty. In her mission, the Church always needs to care for humanity in both the personal and the social life. She is therefore identified by her respect for both the science and the human cultures.

    Jezus w mowie pożegnalnej zapowiada przyjście Parakleta (J 14,26), którego zadaniem będzie przypominać uczniom Jezusa to, czego ich Chrystus nauczał. Artykuł podejmuje kwestię wpływu Parakleta na pamięć uczniów i odpowiada na pytanie: Jak należy rozumieć to działanie Ducha wobec uczniów? Autor artykułu podejmuje to zagadnienie z perspektywy teologii biblijnej z uwzględnieniem elementów teorii pamięci społecznej. Najpierw przedstawia w sposób syntetyczny rozumienie pamięci w Biblii oraz podstawowe założenia teorii pamięci społecznej. Następnie analizuje tekst i dokonuje interpretacji teologicznej obietnicy Parakleta z J 14,26 oraz w świetle tych tekstów czwartej Ewangelii, w których występuje motyw pamięci (2,17.22; 12,16). Pamięć jest bardzo ważnym elementem doświadczenia Kościoła popaschalnego. Działalność Ducha łączy teraźniejszość Kościoła z przeszłością ziemskiego Jezusa. Przedmiotem pamięci ożywianej przez Parakleta i oświecanej przez doświadczenie Zmartwychwstania są słowa Pisma oraz słowa Jezusa. Pamięć społeczna Kościoła Janowego nie jest samowystarczalna. Potrzebuje ona działania Ducha Świętego, żeby mogła być skuteczna w procesie budowania tożsamości wspólnoty.
    Jesus in his farewell speech announces the sending of the Paraclete (Jn 14:26), whose task will be to remind Jesus' disciples of what Christ had taught them. The article tries to answer the question: What is a proper understanding of the Spirit-Paraclete's action upon disciples’ memory? The author of the article addresses this issue from the perspective of biblical theology. First, he presents in a synthetic way the understanding of memory in the Bible and the basic assumptions of the theory of social memory. Then he analyzes the text and offers a theological interpretation of the promise of Jn 14:26 and other texts of the Fourth Gospel where a motif of remembrance is present (2,17.22; 12,16). Memory is an essential element of the experience of the post-paschal Church. The activity of the Spirit connects the present of the Church with the past of the historical Jesus. The memory animated by the Paraclete and enlightened by the experience of the Resurrection always focuses on the words of the Scriptures and the words of Jesus. The believers' social memory within Johannine Christianity is not sufficient in and of itself, but needs the Holy Spirit's action in order to effectively build the community's identity.

    Obraz Królestwa Bożego jest bardzo często wykorzystywany w teologicznych interpretacjach i praktycznych działaniach Światowej Rady Kościołów. W sposobie, w jaki największa organizacja ekumeniczna stosuje tę kategorię, odbijają się różne kierunki teologiczne wyrosłe w protestantyzmie, przede wszystkim teologia Social Gospel. Pojęcie to jest utożsamiane z pewną idealną formułą polityczną i społeczną, do której dążenie jest zadaniem stojącym przed chrześcijanami. Takie jego wykorzystywanie prowokuje wielu obserwatorów do ostrej krytyki, w której genewskiej organizacji zarzuca się, że sprowadza chrześcijaństwo do wizji ideologicznej. Artykuł przedstawia historyczny szkic interpretacji pojęcia Królestwa Bożego w wybranych ujęciach teologii protestanckiej, prezentuje, w jaki sposób Światowa Rada Kościołów interpretuje to pojęcie, ponadto ukazuje podstawowe motywy krytyki tej interpretacji.
    The image of Kingdom of God is often used in many theological interpretations and practical activities of the World Council of Churches. The way of using this category by the biggest ecumenical organizations reflects various theological orientations embedded in Protestantism, particularly in the Social Gospel theology. The Kingdom of God is being identified with an ideal political and social formula, for which striving is proclaiming to be a task to Christians. This provokes many observers to the sharp criticism. They accuse the Genevan institution of reducing Christianity to an ideological vision. The article presents the historical sketch of interpretations of the image of Kingdom of God in selected examples of the Protestant theology, it discusses the way how the World Council of Churches interprets this image, furthermore, it displays the basic motives of criticism concerning this interpretation.

    W prezentowanym tekście chodzi o problem spójności polityki społecznej z przesłaniem społecznym konstytucji pastoralnej Gaudium et spes Soboru Watykańskiego II. Zwrócenie uwagi na tego rodzaju związek, który jest relacją polityki z religią, w warunkach polskich wydaje się koniecznością. Albowiem politykę, w szczególności politykę społeczną, uprawiają ludzie, którzy w przeważającej większości przynależną do dwóch społeczności jednocześnie: politycznej i religijnej. Są aktywnymi politykami i zarazem chrześcijanami. Pojawia się więc problem spójności tego, co uprawiają w ramach polityki z tym, co wyznają z racji swej chrześcijańskiej tożsamości. Autor artykułu dokonuje intelektualnego wglądu w tak postawiony problem. Czyni to poprzez odwołanie się do pojęcia polityki uprawianej „po chrześcijańsku”. Dla jasności rozważań akcentuje potrzebę przyjęcia odpowiedniej aksjologii i etyki. Dla polityki społecznej potrzebna jest właściwa podstawa, którą jest antropologia integralna, w szczególności zaś personalizm chrześcijański. Wedle orędzia społecznego konstytucji Gaudium et spes, polityka społeczna powinna uruchomić swoje instrumenty tak, aby „roztropnie troszczyć się o dobro wspólne”. W praktyce oznacza to troskę, która w pierwszej kolejności dotyczy rodziny. W Polsce, z uwagi na strukturę wyznaniową ludności, jest to zadanie spoczywające głównie na katolikach świeckich. Ci z kolei oczekują na odpowiednią formację sumień ze strony Kościoła hierarchicznego. W uprawianiu polityki społecznej „po chrześcijańsku” trzeba być realistą, bo w przeciwnym razie można właśnie uwikłać się w utopię. Jednak postulat realizmu wcale nie wyklucza realizacji projektu takiej polityki. Jej idea mocno osadzona jest w możliwościach człowieka, który w Kościele znajduje wyjątkową siłę i możliwości twórcze, zdolne do racjonalnych starań o dobro wspólne i jego rozwój. Sobór Watykański II ukazał drogi do pójścia w tym właśnie kierunku.
    This text deals with the issue of making social policy coherent with the social message of the Second Vatican Council Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes. It seems essential to examine the particular relationship between politics and religion in Poland. Politics, and in particular social policy is carried out by people who, in the main, belong to the two communities simultaneously: and religious ones. They are active politicians and also Christians. The problem of coherence between what they do in politics and what they confess because of their Christian identity arises here. The author of the article investigates the issue, framed in this way. He does this by referring to the concept of politics practiced “in a Christian way”. For reasons of clarity, he accentuates the need to adopt an appropriate axiology and appropriate ethics. The right basis is needed for social policy, and this is integral anthropology, especially Christian personalism. According to the social message of Gaudium et Spes, social policy should take up its tools with the aim of “prudent care for the common good”. In practice, this means care primarily for the family. In Poland, due to the religious structure of the population, it is a task incumbent primarily on lay Catholics. They, in turn, expect appropriate formation of conscience on the part of the hierarchical Church. In practicing “Christian” social policy, one has to be realistic, in order not to get entangled in utopia. However, the postulate of realism does not exclude carrying out such a policy project. The idea is firmly rooted in the abilities of man, and man finds in the Church exceptional strength and creative potential, which make rational care for the common good and its development possible. The Second Vatican Council pointed out how to go in this very direction.

    Christianity has always participated in the struggle for honesty and in promoting it through pointing to its timeless, supramundane, positive and fundamental value. This contribution on part of the followers of Christ is very precious and necessary also today. The article is an attempt to show some of the threads of this contribution of Christianity in showing and promoting honesty as a precious value for man and community and an invitation to further discussion on the need for honesty in life.

    The article is an attempt of an analytical look at the basic elements of economic order such as work and wages, from the perspective of Church social teaching. The author tries to show and justify personalistic reasoning with regard to work. The basic theses of this reasoning are: the primacy of man and his work over capital, the man is the subject of work, the man has the right to work and fair pay for it, work is also in the normal way to meet people’s needs, spiritual as well as material.
