The Slavonic version of the homily dedicated to The (Cursed) Fig-Tree and the Parable of the Vineyard by John Damascene has not been so far object of an archeographic-textological study. The present study gives the initial observations on the reception of that Byzantine work in Mediaeval Slavonic Literature. The work centred mainly on the South Slavonic manuscript tradition, while the East Slavonic manuscript tradition represented by the text from the well-known Uspensky Miscellany was used as a starting point and as a basis for comparison during the analysis. The study showed that in Mediaeval Slavonic Literature the homily dedicated to The (Cursed) Fig-Tree and the Parable of the Vineyard by John Damascene has been disseminated through three different Slavonic translations, one redaction, and one contaminated version.

The focus of the present paper is the terms θεωρία and ὀπτασία presented in the Greek text of Life of St Anthony the Great by St Athanasius of Alexandria and their translation representation in the Old Church Slavonic versions of the text. The terms are approached diachronically, i.e. in through history of Classical and post-classical Greek literature, thus providing the necessary cultural background for their usage and context. Each term, then, is commented in its exact attestation in the Life, providing also the corresponding translations and their wider context. The translation renderings are further analyzed in perspective of the lexical material in the classical Old Church Slavonic corpus as well as with material from texts and sources, thus aiming at contextualizing them in wider lexicological perspective.

Opis:
The New Testament apocryphon Didascalia Domini is one of the least known. Its original was written in Greek, according to François Nau, at the end of the 7th century. Relatively early it was translated into Old Church Slavonic. At present five copies of this translation are known, stretching from the 13th to the 15th century. Three of them belong to the Serbian redaction, one each to the Russian (East Slavic) and to the Middle Bulgarian redaction. According to Michail Nestorovič Speranskij the translation originated in Bulgaria. The Greek copies, the oldest of which stems from the 11th century, have divergent final chapters. Moreover, the Slavic translation has yet another ending not corresponding to any of the Greek texts. The textological analysis of the five Slavic copies makes it possible to get an idea of their mutual relationship. On the basis of the linguistic archaisms of the text one can surmise that the translation has been made in Eastern Bulgaria during the 11th century. At the end of the paper there is a critical edition of the Slavic text.

The paper aims at examining the first Slavic collection of homilies of John Chrysostom, called Zlatostruy (i.e. Chrysorrhoas or Golden Stream). The peculiarities of its content, compilation strategy and impact on the medieval Bulgarian literature, revealed in previous studies, allow us to extract features that are related to the flourishing of the 10th century Bulgarian literary tradition and the successful adoption of Byzantine models.

The apocryphal Apocalypse of St. Paul the Apostlebelongs to the group of early-Christian texts which exerted significant impact on people’s perceptionof the nether world and the Last Judgment. In the Middle Ages, the text was known in the area ofwestern and eastern Christian literary tradition. Numerous translations also include the renditionof the Apocalypse of St. Paul the Apostle into Church Slavonic, made in Bulgaria between the 10thand the 11th century, whose presence and distribution in the area of southern Slavdom and Rutheniais confirmed by copies of manuscripts. The article is devoted to a manuscript of the Apocalypse ofSt. Paul the Apostle hitherto overlooked in studies, whose unique form supplements and makes theSlavic textual tradition of the manuscript more comprehensible. The unique feature of the discussedcopy is supplementation of the text with an ending, present only in the ancient Syrian and Coptictranslations of the apocryphal text.

The Old Church Slavonic translation of John Chrysostom’s commentaries on Acts of the Apostles (CPG 4426) is attested in 18 ethica and fragments included in the Old Bulgarian collection Zlatostruy from the early 10th-century Preslav. The Slavonic homilies have many peculiarities in common suggesting that they were translated together presumably by one translator. One of their common features is the frequent use of double translations (Doppelubersetzungen). In the article nearly half of the 90 examples in 10 homilies are examined and divided into four groups – proper double translations, complementary double translations, synonyms, and contextual synonyms. The study shows that in several cases the Slavonic translation is notably consistent and repetitive, but more often it aims at variety and clarity. The examples from the Zlatostruy homilies on Acts are compared to other Old Church Slavonic translations (e.g. to the works of John the Exarch and to other homilies from Zlatostruy), but the similarities are not sufficient for identifying the anonymous translator(s). The use of doublets in the examined texts is viewed both as a linguistic device for a faithful translation and as a stylistic feature typical for the translator of these homilies. However, this phenomenon is attested in many other medieval literary traditions, which makes the Zlatostruy homilies part of a larger textual tradition.

This paper aims at systemising the observations on the constructions used for expressing Future tense in the three known Old Slavonic translations of Vita Antonii Magni by Athansius Alexandrinus. The text was first translated in the early Old Church Slavonic period, while two other (Middle Bulgarian) translations were written in ca. 14th century. This makes the text suitable for observing the different strategies for expressing Future tense, both regarding the translation technique and its dynamics on a synchronic level, i.e., vis-à-vis other translations from the period, and from a diachronic perspective, i.e., paying closer attention to the discrepancies between the three translations themselves. The paper focuses on the Future periphrastic constructions used in the three Slavonic translations of the Life of St Anthony the Great by Athanasius of Alexandria. The approach is based on the relation with the Greek Vorlage, thus analysing closely the situation attested in the Greek original. Observations are made regarding the usage of the periphrases in the Slavonic texts adducing comparative material for similar phenomena from other early (Preslavian) and Middle Bulgarian texts. Some examples provided, as well as those from other texts, might suggest that the Old Church Slavonic periphrases were used not only to express Future tense per se, but for every non-Indicative (or non-factual) Present.

Christopher of Mytilene, a secular poet of the early 11th century, had embarked on a difficult task when creating his dodecasyllabic Christian Calendar, that is two-verse storytelling about saints and, mainly, about the tortures they died of. He accomplished it more than successfully, besides in quite a vivid and spectacular way, by means of various poetic and rhetorical techniques. Food and medicine imagery was just a minute aspect of his mastery, yet a powerful one, acquiring not only artistic and rhetorical, but also mnemonic functions. the poet used such images – just as he used e.g. Biblical allusions – as a way to convey a variety of details in succinct messages; the information thus compressed is unfolded by means of associations in the mind of the perceiver. These associations are related not only to Christianity, but also to many other aspects of the Byzantine cultured life, including certain elements from Antiquity. I will try to reveal this mechanism and to show the attempts of the 14th-century South Slavonic translators to render it as well as their decisions in cases of realia unknown to their audience. For this purpose, I have selected certain Greek verse memories (as given in the editions of Eustratiadis and Cresci & Skomorochova Venturini) from the Verse Synaxarion for the summer half of the year together with their two South-Slavonic correspondences of the 14th century (according to the two respective early manuscripts of the Slavonic Verse Prolog), again only for the months from March to August.

W artykule przeanalizowano kilka wyrazów z listy „rusycyzmów”, które stały się przesłanką do postawienia tezy przez niektórych rosyjskich uczonych o istnieniu działalności przekładowej w Rusi Kijowskiej. Analiza wykazała, że czasowniki z rdzeniem *mъlv- w starobułgarskim przekładzie Kroniki Jerzego Hamartolosa nie mają konkretnego znaczenia mowy lub mówienia, które można by łączyć z językiem staroruskim lub rosyjskim. Rdzeń *mъlv- jest pochodzenia onomatopeicznego, a jego znaczenie mowy jest drugorzędne i jest dobrze reprezentowane we współczesnych językach bułgarskim i rosyjskim. Wobec problemu możliwych rusycyzmów w słowiańskich tłumaczeniach z języka greckiego ostrożne podejście jest wskazane ze względu na fakt, że staroruskie manuskrypty nie odzwierciedlają bezpośrednio języka staroruskiego.
This paper examines several words on the list of “Russicisms” which provides a false premise for some Russian scholars’ thesis about translation activities in Kievan Russia. The analysis reveals that verbs with the root *mъlv- in the Old Bulgarian translation of George Hamartolos’ Chronicon have no specific meaning of speech or speaking that could be associated with either Russian or Old Russian. The root *mъlv- is of an onomatopoeic origin and its meaning of speech is secondary, as is well represented in the modern Bulgarian and Russian languages. Towards the problem of possible Russicisms in the Slavonic translated texts a cautious approach is needed, because of the fact that Old Russian manuscripts do not directly reflect the Old Russian language.

John Chrysostom was not only one of the most prolific and influential authors of late antiquity but also a renown preacher, exegete, and public figure. His homilies and sermons combined the classical rhetorical craft with some vivid imagery from everyday life. He used descriptions, comparisons, and metaphors that were both a rhetorical device and a reference to the real world familiar to his audience. From 9th century onwards, many of Chrysostom’s works were translated into Old Church Slavonic and were widely used for either private or communal reading. Even if they had lost the spontaneity of the oral performance, they still preserved the references to the 4th-century City, to the streets and the homes in a distant world, transferred into the 10th-century Bulgaria and beyond. The article examines how some of these urban images were translated and sometimes adapted to the medieval Slavonic audience, how the realia and the figures of speech were rendered into the Slavonic language and culture. It is a survey on the reception of the oral sermon put into writing, and at the same time, it is a glimpse into the late antique everyday life in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Several attempts were made in the Kyiv Metropolis to translate the basic version of the Emerald (Izmaragd) from Church Slavonic to Ruthenian. These translations were fragmentary, though. The oldest translation, limited to 17 initial chapters of the Emerald, is known in the version dating back to the last quarter of the 15th century. This translation was later partially (8 сhapters) used in compiling the Gnojno version of the Emerald, which consisted of 29 texts in Ruthenian. At least four other Ruthenian chapters from the Emerald dating back to late 16th century are contained in the collection from Pavel Simson’s compendium No 2. Another three texts are found in a collection which dates back to early 17th century and is stored in the Andrey Sheptytsky National Museum in Lviv.

W artykule rozważane są niektóre interesujące problemy związane z badaniem dziedzictwa kulturowego Żydów Kenaanitów, którzy mieszkali na terenach Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego i mieli kontakt z ludnością słowiańską. Jedną z najważniejszych form takich kontaktów był język – diaspora żydowska posługiwała się narzeczami miejscowymi w zakresie od języka literackiego (cerkiewnosłowiański) do języka powszechnie używanego (tzw. проста(я) мова). Tłumaczono na nie fragmenty hebrajskich tekstów biblijnych, których używano podczas nabożeństw w synagogach. Praktyka redagowania i rozpowszechniania takich tekstów przyczyniła się do powstania kontaktów międzywyznaniowych, o czym świadczy historia tłumaczenia Księgi Daniela z Wileńskiego Kodeksu Starotestamentowego (F 19–262).
The article deals with the study of the cultural heritage of the Jewish-Kenanites who lived in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and were in contact with the Slavic population. The most important form of those connections was through language. As a result, the Jewish diaspora used the local dialects ranging from high literary language (Church Slavonic) to the language of everyday communication (prosta(ja) mova). Biblical translations from Hebrew were made in these languages and were used in synagogue worship. The practice of editing and distribution of these texts made inter-confessional contacts possible, as evidenced by the history of the translation of the Book of Daniel from the Vilnius Old Testament Florilegium (F 19–262).

Macedonians are completely satisfied with the present form of their liturgical texts as far as their language is concerned, though at the same time they feel a constant need to prove their national and spiritual identity. For a long time Church Slavonic in its Russian version was used as the liturgical language, but in 1920s the contemporary language started taking gradually its place, the process growing stronger after the state acquired independence in 1991. First translations of biblical and liturgical texts into the contemporary language appeared after 1945, for example the four Gospels were translated from Church Slavonic by the archbishop of Ochrid and Macedonia, Gabriel II and printed in 1952. The first complete translation of the Bible into the contemporary Macedonian was edited in 1990, though it is strongly felt, especially in the circle of academic lecturers and translators of the liturgical texts, that the Bible should be translated from its original languages, which the lack of specialists in the domain makes difficult. The need to work out the Macedonian language, especially its liturgical version – free of Turkish and somewhat Greek influence - and the Macedonian liturgical music and singing rises many discussions, also among the Church hierarchy, professors of theology and musicologists both in the country as well as in the diaspora all over the world.

Opis:
The subject of the paper is to point out and explain the cause of disparities between Polish and Church Slavonic translations of the Anaphora Prayer of St. Basil the Great. We analyzed one of the most important liturgical texts, which stands at the center of Orthodox theologians and liturgists. The differences concern both the linguistic variations, differences related to the accepted source text, as well as those that change the meaning of the text.
