Serbian and Croatian literary language, standardization, Slavic philology in the nineteenth century, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, Ljudevit Gaj
Opis:
South Slavic Idea of National Language. Standardization of Serbian and Croatian Literary Language in the Context of Slavic Studies in the Mid-Nineteenth Century The paper discusses selected problems of the complicated process of Serbian and Croatian language standardization during “national revival” in contrast to Slavists’ ideas. The newly founded discipline, Slavic philology, launched research into “language” understood as an indicator of national differentiation which influences other cultural and national factors. This paper supports a thesis that language was one of the most significant factors of national identification for the Croats and Serbs, and it analyses the most important moments in this process. In the description of South Slavic languages, Slavists were aware of a huge and essential linguistic diversity, but Slavistic classifications included mainly Serbian language. Another point presented in this paper is the description of Serbian and Croatian activity aimed at researching their national language and popularizing it, therefore the paper focuses mainly on the specific features of Lj. Gaj’s and Vuk Karadžić’s ideas concerning language. The paper concludes with an observation that linguistic criterion, originally constituting a factor of nation differentiation, for the Croats and Serbs gradually became− under mistaken belief that linguistic similarity is reflected in the similarity of culture − the main component of community projects that appeared in the nineteenth century among the South Slavs.

Opis:
This article aims to present and describe the situation of the literary language of the Molise Slavs. In the last decades, various scholars have expressed their views on this issue with some of them claiming that Molise Slavic is a literary language, whilst by the other ones this vernacular was denied such right. Although Alexandr D. Dulichenko – who coined the term „Slavic literarymicrolanguage” – dated its literary traditions back to the 19th century, some scholars perceive the 18th or 20th centuries as the beginning of the literature written in Molise Slavic (MSl). Consequently, this led to ambiguity that this article is trying to clarify. Until recently, this vernacular was prevalently used for poetry and short prose, but with recent publications of Nicola Gliosca’s novels, Molise Slavic is now on its way to develop as a full-fledged literary language. According to typology presented by Antoni Furdal, MSl can now – with presence of translations – be classified as a „literary language with limited sphere of use”.

Opis:
The idea of a common Slavic language has been strictly connected with the history of Slavophilism. The concept to use Russian or Old Church Slavonic as an all-Slavic language found numerous advocates. Apart from this, the projects of artificial all-Slavic languages were elaborated, that is “Slavic Esperanto”. Until today, we have come to know 29 such projects, among others, by J. Križanić, S.B. Linde (mainly on the basis of the Polish language), J. Herkel, M. Majar. A manifestation of the disintegration of the Slavic linguistic world is the formation of the so-called Slavic literary microlanguages. Nowadays, there exists more than 20 of such languages or the attempts of their codification.

Opis:
So far, more than 20 Slavic literary microlanguages have been identified, differing by the level of linguistic polyvalence they have achieved. The sources from which microlanguages derive their language efficiency are usually (at least for a certain time) the respective Slavic macrolanguages (such as Polish, Czech or Slovenian) characterized a longstanding literary tradition and use by distinguished representatives of the nation. Codificators of Slavic microlanguages attempt to increase their prestige in various ways. One of the methods of proving that a nascent literary language is functionally efficient and worthy of international recognition is the translation of world literature classics, including the whole or parts of the Bible. Translators of the Bible are, in a certain sense, following in the footsteps of their predecessors who intellectualized folk dialects or not yet fully effective written languages, transforming them into literary languages. As far as Slavic microlanguages are concerned, the richest collection of biblical writings can be found among the Lusatians, with the entire Protestant version of the Bible having been translated into Lower Sorbian and the entire Protestant and Catholic versions into Upper Serbian. The entire New Testament or the four Gospels have been translated into the following Slavic microlanguages: Cashubian, Prekmurje Slovene, Ruthenian, Banat Bulgarian and West Polesian. In case of the Silesian, Podhale, Carpatho-Rusyn (Lemko) and Eastern Slovakian microlanguages, only portions of the NT are available.

Opis:
Artykuł wykorzystując parametry typologiczne analizuje fenomen narodowego języka literackiego na podstawie jego terminologicznej i teoretycznej prezentacji w białoruskim i polskim paradygmacie naukowo-edukacyjnym. Jako materiał analityczny wykorzystano źródła teoretyczne, dydaktyczne i leksykograficzne, odzwierciedlające wspólne, charakterystyczne cechy w konceptualizacji narodowego języka literackiego Białorusinów i Polaków. Występuje asymetria terminologiczna i klasyfikacyjna w interpretacji słowiańskiego języka literackiego w ramach językoznawstwa narodowego i slawistyki. Konceptualizacja białoruskiego i polskiego języka literackiego jest pośrednio związana z ich parametrami typologicznymi i może być wykorzystana jako model typologiczny.
The typological parameters to analyse the phenomenon of the national literary language on the basis of its terminological and theoretical presentation in the Belarusian and Polish scientific and educational paradigm are used in the article. Theoretical, educational methodological and lexicographic sources reflecting common and distinctive features in the conceptualization of the national literary language of Belarusians and Poles are used as analytical material. A terminological and classificatory asymmetry is traced in the interpretation of the national literary Slavic language within the boundaries of national linguistic and Slavic studies. The conceptualization of the Belarusian and Polish literary languages is indirectly related to their typological parameters and can be used as a typological model.

The article presents the phenomenon and mechanisms of the development of bilingualism among the nineteenth-century inhabitantsThe article presents the phenomenon and mechanisms of the development of bilingualism among the nineteenth-century inhabitants of villages situated on the Bug River. The issue is principally exemplified by the novel Iwanko [Ivanko] by Leon Kunicki (1828–1873), a writer associated with southern Podlasie (the Włodawa area). Referring to different situational contexts of the characters in the novel, the author of the study has shown the mechanisms of switching linguistic codes: Polish and Ukrainian. An illustration of these complex communication processes is the Greek Catholic (Uniate) community of Horodno village. The status and prestige in a bilingual community stem from non-linguistic causes, as shown by the cited examples from the novel. The acquisition of Polish by Podlasian Ruthenians is one of the basic conditions for job promotion and, sometimes, social advancement. According to the author of the study, the novel analysed is a good philological source for investigating language contacts on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland. of villages situated on the Bug River.
