This article provides an overview of Serbian linguistic terms for naming lexemes borrowed from Slavic languages. The terms were extracted from the reference linguistic sources in which they are mentioned, such as encyclopedic dictionaries of the linguistic terminology of the Serbian language and the latest Правопис српскога језика [Orthographic Rules of the Serbian Language], and from previous Serbian literature, such as monographs, studies and articles by various Serbian linguists. Considering the entire extracted material, the study notes terminological problems concerning the variance and inconsistency of linguistic terms in this area. It also makes a comparison with linguistic terms in other Slavic languages, based on the material from the Dictionary of Slavonic Linguistic Terminology and the Slavic Bibliographic Database iSybislaw.

Opis:
During the times of Dositej Obradović (1739–1811), i.e. the period of Enlightenment in Serbia, advanced ideas were best spread through literature and the translation of contemporary authors was very common in Serbian literature. Obradović was the first to point out the importance of translation to the Serbs. He advocated the development of literature and culture modelled after more advanced cultures and based on the translation of useful works; he also believed that translation must adapt to the nature of target language. His views particularly influenced same writers from the region of Croatia, namely Pavle Solarić and Jovan Došenović, who were friends also. Solarić translated philosophical, geographical, historical and other documents, while Došenović, under the influence of others, compiled an arithmetic book, as well as the first collection of lyric poetry in recent Serbian literature, with the use of the imitatio procedure too. Translation influenced the genre, subject, style, and especially the linguistic development of Serbian literature.

The paper, after a brief review of the definition of pragmatics and politeness, as one of its subject areas, points out the separate approaches in teaching pragmatics – the indirect and direct approach. An indirect approach is observed in our elementary and secondary school curricula. The main part of the paper presents the concept of teaching pragmatics and politeness within the subject of Forms of politeness in Serbian language, and in this place presents one of the ways of modeling the lessons we use in our teaching practice, which supports a direct approach in teaching pragmatics and politeness.

This article presents one segment of the Balkan patchwork of ethnic groups, cultures and languages in the form of nine indications of Serbian folk sub-dialects from the language borderline in two regions with ancient, intense contacts between Slavic and non-Slavic ethnic groups, languages and cultures. Bearing in mind the fact that all the most significant features of the presented sub-dialects correspond with the “mother dialectic type”, departures from the norm result from the sub-dialects’ geographical and linguistic borderline locations i.e. a direct foreign influence is at play. The non-Slavic languages (Romanian and Albanian) have exerted a strong impact on the Serbian folk sub-dialects in the borderline regions. Consequently, the sub-dialects as we know them today do not reflect the developmental processes taking place in central Serbian sub-dialects, a phenomenon which is even more remarkable in the sub-dialects of the borderline enclaves

We examine their structure and lexical, semantic and pragmatic properties, and also stress the occurrence of new characteristics or tendencies in their use caused by this new medium of communication, i.e. email, as compared to traditional letter correspondence. Those are: higher degree of linguistic individualization, expression of creativity in communication, resorting to economy, linguistic reductions and omissions.

The essay deals with the analysis of the content and the structure of the associative fields of lexemes from the semantic field “religion and Church” in Russian and Serbian languages on the material of associative dictionaries. The aim of this study is the reconstruction of the notions of the religiosity in the consciousness of the both language speakers. The results are set in correlation with the recent sociological studies of the religiosity of Russian and Serbian citizens. The analysis reveals the compatibility of the picture of the religiosity in the language consciousness of the contemporary speakers of Russian and Serbian languages with the findings obtained by sociological methods. According to the structure and the content of the associative fields of the lexemes from the domain of spirituality, religious notions among Russians are amorphous, emotionally and expressively more negatively marked than among Serbs, and they imply greater detachment which is manifested through intellectualistic, rational and atheistic approach. The syncretism of the Soviet ideological attitude toward religious values and their modern status in the post-atheistic and post-totalitarian society is also noticeable, with its rather weak manifestations of the traditional orientation. Among Serbs, the attitude toward the terms from the sacral domain is mostly positively marked, but notions about them are often ambiguous. The most dominant is the traditionalism, with the weaker exposing of the national element, but certain profanation of the terms and notions form the sacral sphere are also noticeable, and it stems from the coexistence of the religious and the secular.

The term religious sociolect (religiolect) in this essay bears the meaning of a relatively stable, socially marked subsystem of the national language satisfying the needs for communication of a limited social group — the members of a particular religious community, reflecting a theocentric picture of the world and having specific lexical, phonetic-prosodical, formative and grammatical features. The language of the Orthodox clergy and church-going believers represents an independent microsystem, a religiolect belonging to Serbian national language, with its specific parameters and confessionally marked elements of all the levels of the language system organisation (orthoepic, graphic and orthographic, grammatical and lexical). The extralinguistic basis of the Orthodox sociolect consists of specific characteristics of the picture of world of the religious Serbian language speakers, as well as the constituents of their mentality — protectivity, sacrality, catholicity.

Krashovani are the Catholic Slavic language minority settled in the region of Romanian Banat. They live in seven villages: Karashevo, Clocotici, Lupac, Nermet, Vodnic, Rafnic and Iabalcea, however, the last one represents an untypical case from the linguists’ point of view, the habitants usually communicate in Romanian, though they continue to declare themselves Krashovani. Time and reason of possible switch have not been clarified yet, as well as the Krashovanis’ ethnogenesis and detailed history. The most popular scientific theories attach them to Serbians or Croatians. Although their archaic idiom contains more features of Kosovo-Resava or Prizren-Timok dialect areas, recently the locals have started to define themselves as Croatians, mainly due to the influences of the Catholic church and modern Croatian cultural politics. In this paper based on the results of our fieldwork in Karashevo, we analyze some particularities of the contemporary ethnolinguistic situation there, paying special attention to the actual state of both Slavic and Romanian idioms used in this microregion.

У пр- вом плану јесу правила о употреби акценатских знакова у писаном тексту. In this paper, the author analyzes the orthographic rules for writing accents in the textbooks of Serbian grammar at primary and secondary level, as well as in orthographic manuals. At the forefront, there are rules for the use of accent marks in written text. The analysis will cover examples from literature (poetry and prose) to determine in which situations the accents should be placed on the written text and what its function is. The orthoepic norm is an essential part of linguistic standardization. Primarily, it refers to spoken language as one of two forms of realization of standard (literary) language and implies rules for pronunciation of words, i.e. their accents. This orthoepic standardization implies rules for the distribution of accents in the Serbian language, and as such is entered into all three basic pillars of our standard language – in normative grammars, orthography manuals, and normative dictionaries (the exception being, for example, the syllable superlatives of an adjective, like the najjednostavniji), that the accent carriers are vowels or the syllable r (eg. prvi), that the accent cannot be on the last syllable, that monosyllables can only have descending accents (eg. put) and not accentuating accents. Finally, it was systemically resolved that the foreign words entered into the Serbian language are to be adapted to our accent (eg fr. Ruso and not Ruso, lit. Brazauskas and not Brazauskas). Students come across the accents in the primary school first. Within the area of correct (spoken) speech, some important features of the accents are given. It is not written at the time, it is not introduced as a graphic / spelling sign, but rather by emphasizing the style in which students are emphasized in the place of the stress. For example PRI-po-vet-ka, gra-MA-ti-ka. Already at that age, for the first time, it is emphasized that different stresses can change the meaning of words, e.g. O-ba-vi-ti („to do something“) and o-BA-vi-ti („to wrap something“), and to mark another form of the same word, which is most commonly associated with declension, e.g. i-ME-na (nominative plural) vs. I-me-na (genitive singular) Later, in six grade, accent marks are introduced, first long ones, as students can more easily recognize them. Again, quite correctly, it is pointed out that, based on the length of the accented syllable, two homonyms can be distinguished, e.g. skUp – noun: skUUp – adjective; kAda – adverb: kAAda – noun, or with a recorded accent, e.g. mlada – noun meaning „bride“: mlada – adjective in feminin. Although they are part of the orthoepic norm, accents are also part of orthography, because the spelling norm puts them in spelling signs, along with the break sign (...), apostrophe (`), genitive sign (ˆ), and other, auxiliary, signs (e.g. in the current spelling of 2010). A note about accent writing in the text is already found in Milan Petrovic (orthography manual from 1914), which states that accent characters are used in writing together with the length character and apostrophe, when two words differ only in accent from another, e.g. grad and grad. The analysis of the spelling literature showed that over time the instruction on writing accents has been lost, and thus in the current Matica srpska’s orthography, although they are orthographic sings, there is no indication when they should be written, thus making them categorized as orthographic. The examples we have shown in the paper prove that accent writing is motivated not only by the meaning of words (primarily in terms of homonymy), but is sometimes also part of stylistic means of expression, when the poet consistently adheres to the metric pattern and even changes the standardized quantity and quality of the accent of a word. Based on these examples from literature, both poetry and prose, the paper recommends that the orthography manuals emphasize in the orthography manual that the emphasis in the text is noted when it is phonologically relevant.

This paper describes the characteristic lexicon in the Devic’ katastichos, the monastery book of the monastery Devic in the vicinity of the town of Srbica in Kosovo and Metohija. In this book, the priests wrote down the gifts that the believers gave them from 1762 to 1789. Based on the name of the believers, the names of the places from which they originated, their professions, based on the list of gifts to the monastery, the measurements determining the weight, volume or length of gifts, a clear picture can be formed about the dynamic life of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija during the 18th century, as well as the active life of Devic Monastery, to which the gifts were donated by the Orthodox Serbs, and also by the Albanians. According to the 2011 census, there are no more Serbs in Srbica, and the Monastery Devic was damaged in both World Wars and was burned down in 1999 and 2004. The work is dedicated to the celebration of eight centuries of autocephality of Serbian Orthodox Church (1219–2019), and consequently the autonomy the Serbian education, science, art and the entire spiritual life of Serbs, whose origins are related specifi cally to Kosovo and Metohija.

Since using abbreviations in communication is a common phenomenon, the objective of the paper and research was to determine how well high school leavers know the spelling rules concerning word abbreviating. The research was conducted on the basis of a survey. The survey involved 160 respondents. Abbreviations in primary and secondary school curricula were also analyzed as well as the spelling rules related to their writing in the Serbian Language Orthography by Matica Srpska. We tried to find out what mistakes appeared, what brought them about and we offered possible solutions to making them fewer. The results of the research show that the abbreviations are a very perplexed part of orthographic system. Although there are very strict rules in literary language norm, it seems that the great number of native speakers don’t comply with those rules, mostly because they are not familiar with them. The great percent of correct answers was found in those abbreviations that are the most frequent in everyday communication. Results of the research also show that the orthography teaching on academic level has great impact on knowledge of literary language norm. Therefore, Orthography should be one of the compulsory courses. On the other side, the fact that results of this research are almost the same as the results of the previous similar researches are discouraging. That shows that the problem of writing abbreviations is common. This problem could be solved if we obey literary language norm in Serbian language teaching and in media literacy. In spite of the fact that it’s almost paradoxically, we can say that, nonetheless literary language norm is being taught through whole schooling, it is never completely learned. Therefore it is important for students to learn basics of literary language norm and how to use orthographic textbooks by doing different writing exercises, surveys projects etc. It’s important that they learn how to use that knowledge properly.

This paper aims to analyse the elements of gender ideology and neo-liberal ideology in a corpus composed of three Italian and two Serbian as a foreign language textbooks. The focus of the study is centered on the representation of activities related to the purchase of clothes and accessories, analysed from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. The results indicate that neoliberal values are sustained through the idea that women are naturally predisposed to be clothes and fashion consumers. On a broader scale, the results implicate that the educational materials taken into examination lack a critical pedagogy approach, and that they do not employ the critical and the transformative potential of education, instead they are limited to the reproduction of dominant ideologies.

Opis:
This work critically examines some epistemological problems of the institutionalized public knowledge of Serbian lingustics and the knowledge of the opposed groups of social and feminist linguists. It also provides attention to some relevant studies of feminine derivational sufixes in the Serbo-Croatian and Croatian language. Under consideration are some crucial methodological issues such as supporting a claim, reliability of evidence, presenting disagreement among sources, and research ethos. The research contributes to the fuller understanding of the problem of social femininatives and to enlarging the types of reference sources. It suggests the need of thorough diachronic and interdisciplinary research which would look at different centuries and show the correlation between macsculine and feminine sufixes, the chronological activisation and geographical distribution of social femininatives, their productivity, archaization and extinction, as well as the newest proposals.

Opis:
The subject of this paper is phraseology with the name of the bird in its lexical structure (such as crn kao gavran, držati se kao pokisli vrabac, zaplesti se kao pile u kučine, podmetnuti kukavičje jaje etc.). These units were analyzed in order to present the language picture of the animal world of Serbian speakers. The research is based on linguocultural approach to language ‒ Zykova’s conceptual theory of phraseology and culture (Зыкова, 2015). Attention is mostly paid to the problem of motivation of the observed phraseologisms and the phraseological semantic processes. There are several different types of information that motivate the creation of phraseology with the name of the bird as their lexical component: the appearance of the bird, its sound and behavior, as well as its symbolic value.

Opis:
The word odličan ‘excellentʼ is used to express a positive evaluation and has a large number of synonyms, but for many of them the lexicographic sources do not provide information about the possibility of using them for expressing evaluation. Moreover, although the inner word-form of the word odličan speaks only of general standing out from other objects, the word itself is used only in a positive sense. The inner word-form semantic analysis gives the answer to the question why all the analyzed synonyms can be used for giving a positive evaluation. The article draws attention to a deep conceptual relationship between words with the meaning of dobar ‘goodʼ and odličan ‘excellentʼ, because the same basic conceptual metaphors are used in their synonyms (dobar / odličan is up / big). It was also established that words with a positive connotation are found in the inner word-form of synonyms of odličan or in their definitions, including those that indicate a relationship between a positive general assessment and a positive aesthetic assessment. The meaning of odličan differs from “ordinary” objects in such a way that it can be conceptually associated with realm of the fantastic or unreal, which in turn triggers an emotional reaction in the observer. The language reveals that objects that are evaluated positively are treated in a unique way: they are set apart from others, they function as a topic of conversation, they acquire general approval and obtain a special status in society.
