    The paper presents philosophical views which have been propagated in the first decade of the 20th-century by Austrian experimental physicist Franz-Serafin Exner (1846-1926). According to Exner all apparently deterministic laws are only a kind of the macroscopic limit of the indeterministic random events and processes in nature. The paper attempts to show whether Exner’s ideas have influenced the views on randomness and probability developed by renowned Polish physicist Marian Smoluchowski (1872-1917) who belonged to informal circle of Exner’s students and assistants (so-called Exner-Kreis).

    According to the personalist ethicists the moral principle persona est affirmanda is very important in human life; some of them propose even to replace it with the general rule of the natural law: bonum est faciendum. The polish capuchin, Venerable Serafin Kaszuba, may be a special example of the life in the light of the principle persona est affirmanda. His moral discernment is used in this paper for analyzing – in practice – the relation between the usage of the moral standards and the place of the principle persona est affirmanda

    The article concerns a new source in connection with the figure of St. Martyr Archimandrite Seraphim Szachmuc (1901-1946). Author publishes a previously unknown letter written by Seraphim to his former parishioners from Kuraszewo. The article also presents St. Seraphim’s biography, with particular emphasis on the period of his ministrations as a preacher of the parish in Kuraszewo and his missionary trip to eastern Belarus with Gregory Kudarenko, which ended with the arrest and Seraphim’s martyrdom in the gulag.

    St. Seraphin, the Orthodox Sage of Sarow, has recently gained great popularity not only in Russia’s Orthodox religiousness, but also the milieu of the Roman-Catholic Church in the post-Soviet territories. In iconography, it is presented as filled with the Holy Spirit, a fact that is usually portrayed with a white and bright robe. This text corresponds with the kind of writing about the person and teaching of St. Seraphin and it attempts to transplant this interests onto the area of Polish dogmatic theology and theology of spirituality. The current importance, novelty, and universality of St. Seraphin’s teaching consists in the fact that it not only gives man hope to be transformed and deified through the grace of the Holy Spirit and His light. Saint Seraphin lived by the principle: accept God, carry God, and give God. Thus outlined the systematic doctrine of man’s deification through the Holy Spirit according to St. Seraphin starts from God and returns to God. Man connected with this process has a chance for an effective activity on behalf of coming closer to the Holy Spirit through a prayerful “bringing Him” to one’s heart. The Holy Spirit, by His nature, is love and is open to stoop to man. Therefore irrespectively of the state of life, whether it is in a religious order, priesthood, or as a layperson, one many experience this grace of deification.

    W okresie patrystycznym Księga Izajasza cieszyła się ogromnym zainteresowaniem tak wśród greckich, jak i łacińskich egzegetów. Sam św. Hieronim wyjaśniał proroka Izajasza niejednokrotnie. Ten komentarz jest uważany przez badaczy za szczyt Hieronimowej egzegezy. Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są passusy z księgi 3 Hieronimowego Komentarza do Księgi Izajasza, w której Strydończyk analizuje między innymi Iz 6, 1-3 oraz Iz 6, 6-7 (por. Hieronymus, Commentarii in Esaiam III 6, 1-3 i 6, 6-7, Vetus Latina 23, s. 307-315; s. 318-320). Otóż, w Iz 6 pojawiają się tajemnicze istoty zwane Serafinami. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu do samego komentarza, prezentujemy w tym artykule zagadnienie Serafinów w Hieronimowej egzegezie w 4 podpunktach: 1) Etymologia terminu Serafin (Serafini = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); 2) Sześć skrzydeł jako jedna z cech dystynktywnych Serafina (dwoma zakrywają twarz Boga (może swoją?), drugą parą skrzydeł zakrywają stopy Boga (a może swoje?), trzecia para zaś służy im do latania); 3) Obowiązki i zadania Serafinów (celebracja świętości Boga oraz są posyłane z różnymi zleceniami); 4) Alegoryczne rozumienie frazy Serafin (Serafiny mogą symbolizować: Stary i Nowy Testament, służebne moce niebieskie lub jakiś cień prawdy odnoszącej się do przyszłej niewoli).
    In the patristic era, the Book of Isaiah was of great interest to both Greek and Latin exegetes. St. Jerome of Stridon explained the prophet Isaiah many times. The subject of this article is the passages from book 3 of Jerome’s The Commentary on Isaiah, in which he analyzes, among others, Is 6:1-3 and Is 6:6-7 (cf. Hieronymus, Commentarii inEsaiam III 6, 1-3 and 6,6-7, Vetus Latina 23, p. 307-315, 318-320). Ergo, in Is 6 appear mysterious beings called Seraphim. After a short introduction to the commentary itself, in this article I present the issue of the Seraphim in Jerome’s exegesis in 4 subsections: (1) The etymology of the term Seraphim (Seraphim = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); (2) Six wings as one of the distinctive features of the Seraphim: (two cover the face of God (maybe theirs?), the second pair of wings covers God’s feet (or maybe theirs?), and the third pair is used for flying); (3) Duties and tasks of the Seraphim (celebration of the holiness of God and being sent with various commissions); (4) Allegorical meaning of the phrase Seraphim (Seraphim can symbolize: Old and New Testaments, serving celestial powers, or some shadow of truth relating to future captivity).

    Opis:
    The object of interest is a description of manuscript L 1642 which belongs to the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. This manuscript is a Hymnal, which was written in 1721 and it belonged to the Benedictine Sisters in Sandomierz. The material includes medieval European and Polish 16th and 17th century liturgical and paraliturgical songs. The texts in the manuscript are written in Latin and Polish. The Hymnal contains carols, the Advent, Easter and Passion songs among others; there are 77 works in total and only one has no musical notes (its text is written at the end of the manuscript). Most works are known and correspond with the content of other hymnals, e.g. the ones that belonged to the Benedictine Sisters in Staniątki, the Carmelite Sisters in Kraków, and the Clarisse Sisters in Gniezno. There are also some songs in Walenty Bartoszewski’s ("Parthenomelica albo Pienia nabożne o Pannie Najświętszej", 1613) and Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński’s works ("Pieśni katolickie nowo reformowane", 1638). The Hymnal is compiled by Anna Stogniewówna or, according to Magdalena Walter-Mazur, by Zofia Bratysiewiczówna. The manuscript is an interesting source of the known literary and musical culture of the Benedictine Sisters in Sandomierz. It also shows the popularity of these religious works. The Hymnal also contains some unknown versions of songs.
