The subiect of the present article is the semantic field of the noun form αγιασμος in the canonical books o f LXX. The semantic shades of the term αγιασμος as it is used in these books, are derived and presented by means of a set of linguistic and exegetical methods. The results of the author's research may be brough to the following conclusions. 1. The nominal form αγιασμος appears in the canonic books of LXX nine times in total, of which six of the cases appear in a part of the Greek Bibie which is originally written in Hebrew. The appropriate fragments are: Judg 17, 3; Sir 7, 31; Jer 6, 16; Ezek 22, 8; 45, 4; Amos 2, 11. It also appears once in Sir 17, 10 – the text has been preserved only in Greek, and twice in 2 Macc, namely 2 Macc 2, 17; 14, 36, written straightaway in Greek. 2. The noun is question, as it appears in the biblica books of LXX translated from the Hebrew language does not have an adequate equivalent in the TM of the Hebrew Bible. In the course of the research it has also been proved that in three cases there are derivatires corresponding to this noun and deriving from the stem קדש that is קדש (hi) in Judg 17, 3; קדש in Ezek 22, 8; מקדש in Ezekl 45, 4. In Jer 6,16 it is the term מדגוע, which is derived from the stem רגוע and in Amos 2,11 the word נזיר derived from נזר. 3. The semantic analysis of the LXX-ian texts which contain the term αγιασμος shows that this noun appears as many as six times in a stricctly cultic context, namely in Judg 17, 3; 2 Macc 2, 17; 14, 36; Sir 7, 31; Ezek 22, 8; 45, 4 .4 . It has also been proved here that the nominal form αγιασμος in the canonical books of LXX is used both with people and things. 5. The people who are referred to by means of αγιασμος are the following; God-Jahwe himself (2 Macc 14, 36; Sir 17,10), the Jewish nation |(2 Macc 2, 17); the inhabitants of the capital of the Juda (Jer 6, 16) and nazireats (Amos 2, 11). 6. The shades of the semantic field of the noun αγιασμος when it is used in relation to people are „holiness”, „the state of being made holy”, „sanctification”. Metaphorically, one can also speak of the term αγιασμος as „a temple” or „a holy place”. 7. In the LXX-ian texts, in which the nominal form is used in relation to things, the referents are; silver (Judg 17, 3), the cultic sacrifice made to God (Sir 7,31), and a sanctuary, a temple or a holy place (Ezek 22, 8; 45, 4). 8. When the nouns form αγιασμος is used in relation to things semantic field covers the ensuing shades of meaning: „holiness”, „the state of being made holy”, „sanctification”, „a temple”, „holy place”. When the noun form αγιασμος is used in relation to things, its semantic field covers the ensuing shades of meaning; „holiness”, „the state of being made holy”, „sanctification”, „a temple”, „holy place”. 9. There is a certain clearly-observable regularity in the canonical books of the Greek Bibie of Old Testament, in the texts which contain the nominał form αγιασμος. The point is that in Old Testament the said term is always linked in its meaning with the person of God-Jahwe and speaks of Him that something is His possession (cf. 2 Macc 14, 36; Sir 17, 10) or that something is a result of His activity. What should be strongly emphasized here is that the phenomenon of the abovementioned regularity occurs in all of the previously-presented semantic shedes of αγιασμος  (in particular „holiness”) both with people and things. 10. It seems that within the semantic field of the noun form αγιασμος, there are no particularly essential differences between the semantic shades of the word in books of LXX, which are originally written in Hebrew, and the semantic shades of this word in these books which are written and preserved till our times in Greek.

The article gives a short panorama of questions concerning the inspiration of Septuagint. A little sketch of catholic teaching on the inspiratlffin of the Scripture is a starting point of this paper. It is followed by two historical paragraphs devoted to both Jewish-Hellenistic and early Christian witnesses, who seem to support the idea of divine inspiration of the Greek text. Finally, some general issues debated by contemporary scholars are presented. In conclusion, not rejecting the TM as the basis for modern OT translątions, the author favours the idea of LXX’s inspiration. However, since the research on the LXX is still in its early stadium, one has to be careful not to give too precipitate answer in such a complicated matter.

Opis:
Deportations of Jews into the Babylonian captivity began a period of diaspora, because a part of the inhabitants of Judea took shelter in Egypt. In the fifth century BC, on the island of Elephantine – an island in the Nile, near the First Cataract – a colony of Jewish soldiers, who served in the army of Pharaoh, was created. Moreover, a temple following the templein Jerusalem was built there. After the conquest of Egypt, made by Alexander the Great, the Jewish Diaspora intensively developed. Jews were invited to settle in the newly built port city – Alexandria, which became the capital of the whole Egypt, as well as the scientific and artistic centre.The Judaic literature in Greek language, which was used every day, developed mainly in this city. The establishment of the Septuagint, the Greek Bible translated from Hebrew, wasthe most significant result of this development. Successive waves of emigration of Jews in the second century BC resulted in creation of the Jewish settlements in Leontopolis, where the temple of the Highest God was also built. During the reign of the Ptolemies, there were also the situations of the persecution of Jews. One such event was successfully completed, and it is called a “miracle of the hippodrome”.Since the conquest of Egypt by the Romans (30 BC), the situation of the Jewish Diaspora was gradually getting worse. In 38 AD, the first defeat of the Alexandrian Jews took place, and the next one occurred. The Jews, dissatisfied with their position, both in Egypt and the surrounding lands, started an armed rebellion, which was brutally suppressed by Romans in the 115–117 AD. It was the end of the Jewish Diaspora in Egypt, the history of which lasted over VII centuries.

This article provides an analysis of the occurrence of basic terms related to the Greek mystery cults in the Septuagint. Such terms as τελεταί, μύσται and θίασοι appeared to be so significant and wide that could be employed in expressing theological views on current reality while translating. Considerably general criticism of initiations seems to reflect the translator’s polemics against traditions which he considered unacceptable in the light of the Yahwist. The Baal-Peor cult (Numbers 25:3,5 and Psalms 105:28 LXX) was perceived by the translator as one of the initiations. The translation of the Book of Amos 7:9 defines the idolatrous temples of Israel as initiations, thus being living institutions and not specific locations. A similar approach can be observed in the translation of the terms qedesha and qadesh. in Deut 23:18, 1 Kgs 15:12 and Hos 4:14, whereas the term θίασοι in translation of Jeremiah 16:5 refers to feasts in the honour of deities. It should be noted, however, that the Septuagint translators’ reference to mystery cults was not their main focus of attention. Translation phenomena observed herein remain rather marginal even in comparison with the writings of Philo or Flavius Josephus. Therefore it can be inferred that the problem in question was a peripheral part of a larger phenomenon, i.e. condemnation of idolatry.

W artykule zajęto się pytaniem o chrześcijańskie odczytywanie Biblii Hebrajskiej/Starego Testamentu, która jest jednocześnie pierwszą częścią kanonu chrześcijan i Pismem świętym Żydów (religii żydowskiej), po Auschwitz, za który teologia chrześcijańska ponosi współodpowiedzialniość. Punktem wyjścia jest prezentacja trzech współczesnych propozycji hermeneutycznych: Christopha Dohmena, Franka Crüsemanna i Waldemara Chrostowskiego. Chrystologiczna interpretacja Biblii Hebrajskiej jest możliwa jedynie świetle wiary wielkanocnej uczniów Jezusa, bez wiary wielkanocnej taka interpretacja byłaby nie do pomyślenia, bez społeczności chrześcijańskiej by nie istniała. Przy czym dla chrystologicznej interpretacji nie ma zasadniczego znaczenia, czy jej podstawą jest Biblia Hebrajska czy Septuaginta.
The author asks about Christian ways of reading of the Hebrew Bible as a first part of the Christian biblical canon in times after Holocaust. He presents three modern hermeneutical proposals of this reading: Christoph Dohmen’s, Frank Crüsemann’s and Waldemar Chrostowski’s (as representative for Polish roman catholic theology). A Christological lecture of the Hebrew Bible is possible only in the light of the Eastern experience of Jesus’ followers. The lecture is strongly connected with the first century Jewish interpretations but unimaginable without the faith in Jesus’ resurrection. From intertextuality point of view the Christological interpretation of the Hebrew Bible is necessary and inalienable but only within the Christian community of faith. A question whether the Christian Old Testament is the Hebrew Bible or the Septuagint is of minor importance. For understanding of Christian traditions we need the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint, and intertestamental literature.

The core of Mattathias’ deathbed speech addressed to his sons and all the participants of the Maccabaean rising (1 Macc 2:51-61) is the command to be faithful to the law and the covenant as  a foundation of patriotism as it was then understood – love of one’s homeland and defense of traditions that constituted the identity of the people who inhabited it. The biblical author recalls the major figures in the history of Israel to show the struggle of the insurgents as a continuation of    the history created by the heroes of the past. The object of the article is to present the theology      of those particular figures from the history of Israel in the context of the then ongoing events whereby they became models to follow and a source of perseverance in the undertaken struggle against the pagan invaders from the Seleucid empire.

The New Testament texts depend on the Septuaginta translation for the grammar and vocabulary that they use. The influence is shown by the numerous quotations according to the most ancient translation of the Old Testament. The relationship between the two main parts of the Bible lies in the common content shared by the authors of their books. The present paper describes the dependence of the name “New Testament” on the Septuagint and demonstrates that its openness favored the reception of the Christian message.

It is not meant only for the ancient societies, but should be treated as a valuable Text by contemporary people as well. The Book was created as a result of the need to learn the Bible. The Septuagint made the texts of the Hebrew Bible accessible for both the Jews and the Greeks. The Greek Bible became useful for literary, legal and synagogical purposes. Undeniably it helped people get closer to the mystery of Jesus Christ.

Artykuł koncentruje się na egzegezie Łk 17,21 – na fragmencie mówiącym o królestwie Bożym obecnym w nas lub pośród nas? W kolejnych punktach poszukiwano odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak należy rozumieć grecki termin ἐντὸς. Autor odwołuje się do świadectw biblijnych, literatury patrystycznej oraz polskiej tradycji translatorskiej Biblii.
In my work I focus on the Kingdom of God in Luke 17,21. Is it inside the man or among the people. One word ἐντὸς, two translations, and many interpretations. How ἐντὸς uses the Greek translation of the Old Testament called the Septuagint? Always mean inside. As the Fathers of the Church interpreted Luke 17,21? They said that the Kingdom of God is within people, but only Christians. And as apocryphal literature interprets the Gospel of Luke 17,21? Gospel of Thomas refers to the Gospel of Luke, that the Kingdom of God is within us and outside us. In my opinion has more arguments translation: “The kingdom of God is within you”. Then summary. We see Polish translations of the Bible, the modern and the old text. Translation and like interpretation has changed over the centuries.

In this article we point out the initial stage of the consolidation of the Christian text of Scripture, the major problems occurring during this process and the final expression of its specific character. The first and the major witness of this process is Justin Martyr thanks to whom we learn about first relations and tensions between Greek and Jewish tradition concerning Scripture. He advocated the universalist approach based on truth, which allowed him to find the way to conciliate those tensions. Furthermore, such an approach allowed him to look favourably on extra-Biblical tradition and recognise it as a preparation for the incarnation of the Eternal Word. Saint Irenaeus in his approach to the text of the Bible appreciated the divine origin and inspiration which decides about its superiority and universalism. By the end of the 3rd century the question of the Christian text of Scripture had been determined, and the emphasis was put rather on the issue of the books, that is the canon.

Problem prezentacji zawarty jest w pytaniu: jakie znaczenie współcześnie nadaje Septuagincie Papieska Komisja Biblijna w swoich dokumentach, wydanych po „Sedula cura”? Wydaje się, że referencje do LXX są w ostatnich dokumentach PKB dość skromne i często niejednoznaczne. W zasadzie jest ona postrzegana jako żydowska Biblia Grecka. Ponieważ jest także chrześcijańskim Starym Testamentem, rozpoznanym i uznanym przez Kościół, Papieska Komisja Biblijna uznaje ten fakt, niemniej jednak nie poświęca Septuagincie (LXX) znaczącego i adekwatnego miejsca w swojej refleksji.
This presentation focuses on the question: what meaning does the Pontifical Biblical Commission in its documents promulgated after Sedula cura give to the Septuagint in our times? It seems that the references to the LXX appear in the latest documents of the Commission in a rather humble way and frequently ambiguously. The Septuagint is basically perceived as the Jewish Greek Bible. Since it is also the Christian Old Testament, identified and recognised by the Church, the Pontifical Biblical Commission accepts this fact, but in its reflection it does not assign a significant and adequate place to the Septuagint.

In the above article, based on the correspondence of St. Jerome and St. Augustine, there has been shown how these two outstanding the Bible experts, translators and interpreters understood the principles used in its translation. In three parts – entitled: Work, Man, Way – the importance and significance of the Bible and its translations, above all the Septuagint, the tasks and features of the man who translates, the methods and ways of translating were shown. Both of them in their letters indicated: the necessity of an exceptional and proper approach to the Holy Scriptures, a good preparation of the translator and the use of a method that would be appropriate to the translated piece: in the case of the Bible – a beautiful translation preserving the arrangement of the words of the inspired Scriptures; and in the case of non-canonical pieces – expressing the thoughts using the rules of the language into which the work is translated.

Opis:
Origen is the exegete and Old Christian writer whose influence on the understanding of the Bible has always been determinative. Undoubtedly, for ecclesiastical reasons he deemed the Septuagint superior and regarded it as the Christian Old Testament. He thought highly of Hebrew text as well, which he often used for his research. An expression of this belief was among others the Hexapla worked out by Origen, which can be regarded as an exceptional manifestation of esteem towards the Old Testament and its Hebrew version. Origen’s attitude towards the Bible can be characterized by two approaches: on the one hand it is the ecclesiastical approach which gives the first place to the text commonly accepted in the Church namely the Septuagint, but on the other hand he is open to every other text Hebrew or Greek, trying to understand it and take it into account in his commentary.

Niniejszy artykuł omawia wybrane aspekty terminologii dotyczącej gniewu w Biblii Greckiej. Septuaginta używa zasadniczo dwóch terminów określających gniew: θυμός i ὀργή (bardzo rzadko innych). Oba używane są w LXX zamiennie i, jak się wydaje, bez żadnego klucza zarówno na określenie gniewu Boga, jak i ludzi oraz zwierząt. Artykuł omawia oba terminy wraz z ich etymologią i występowaniem w klasycznej literaturze greckiej, ukazując, że słownictwo LXX nawiązuje zarówno do klasycznej filozofii i literatury (gdzie temat gniewu jest podejmowany niejednokrotnie, już w najstarszych pismach), jak i do tradycji żydowskiej (używając w przekładzie hebraizmów i charakterystycznych dla Biblii Hebrajskiej zwrotów). Artykuł ukazuje zarazem, że na poziomie terminologicznym i pojęciowym terminologia LXX dotycząca gniewu wywarła wpływ także na Nowy Testament.
The article discusses selected aspects of “anger” terminology in the Greek Bible. The Septuagint basically uses two terms to express anger, θυμός and ὀργή, and rarely any others. The two words are used in the LXX interchangeably, it seems to express both the wrath of God and the wrath of people and animals. The article discusses both of these key terms, along with their etymology and occurrence within classical Greek literature, recognizing that the terminology of the LXX is based both upon those classical texts – which often refer to the theme of “anger”, starting with the oldest known Greek texts – as well as on the Jewish tradition, incorporating many so-called “Hebraisms” and expressions characteristic of the Hebrew Bible. In addition, the article shows that the LXX terminology regarding anger also had an influence on the New Testament, on both a terminological and conceptual level.
