The article presents obstacles (barriers) indicated by young people that make communication with seniors difficult. The author discusses selected cognitive phenomena (e.g. cognitive disharmony, features of the senile mentality) and some problems concerning language and communication (e.g. indistinct articulation) as well as seniors’ hearing difficulty, all contributing to the deterioration of message reception.

Starzejące się społeczeństwa krajów wysokorozwiniętych stanowią dla polityk państwowych nie lada wyzwanie. Jednocześnie, przy spadającej liczbie urodzeń wzrosło zagrożenie ujemnego przyrostu naturalnego. Pojawiają się trudności braku siły roboczej na rynku pracy. Te i inne wskaźniki pozwalają stwierdzić, iż społeczeństwo będzie potrzebowało swoich seniorów w przestrzeni publicznej. Wydłużający się wiek życia zmienia sposób postrzegania osób starszych jako niezastąpiony rezerwuar zasobów doświadczonych fachowców. Nakłada to na społeczeństwo obowiązek prowadzenia działań promocyjnych w kierunku polityki rodzinnej, w tym senioralnej. Jednocześnie same osoby starsze potrzebują, dostosowanej do ich potrzeb, przestrzeni permanentnej edukacji. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia sytuację osób starszych, zwłaszcza ich możliwości w przestrzeni aktywności edukacyjnej w sytuacji przejścia na emeryturę. Próbuje pokazać, w jaki sposób wymóg edukacji nieformalnej i pozaformalnej staje się obowiązkiem, a jak dalece jest postrzegany przez osoby starsze jako przymus zewnętrzny.
The ageing population of developed countries poses a challenge to State policy. At the same time, decreasing number of births increased the risk of negative natural growth. There is a shortage of manpower in the labour market. These and other indicators allow us to state that society will need its seniors in the public space. An extended life expectancy changes the perception of elderly people as an irreplaceable reservoir of resources of experienced professionals. This imposes a public obligation to conduct promotional activities in the direction of family policy, including elderly people. At the same time, elderly people themselves need a permanent education space adapted to their needs. This article presents the situation of elderly people, especially their opportunities in the area of educational activity in the situation of retirement. It tries to show how the requirement of informal and non-formal education becomes an obligation, and how much it is perceived by elderly people as external coercion.

Population ageing is one of the most important problems of the 21st century economy. Similarly, the subject of creating a living space for the elderly, taking into consideration their specific needs resulting from functional disability in the context of the ever growing population of elderly people is one of the key challenges that modern architecture has to face. The aim of the article is to present the physical environment of geriatric care facilities as a system of functional and behavioural stimuli in the context of ergonomic as well as social solutions, which may have influence on the economic development – by stimulating the activity of the elderly, as well as on the development of a number of disciplines connected with old age. It has been assumed that there exists a number of spatial determinants which may become elements supporting the elderly as well as the people involved in providing care for them. Therefore it is necessary to improve the standard of technical equipment and to modernize the architectural space targeted at the elderly.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie na tle tych ogólnych tendencji społecznych odnośnie opieki nad osobami starszymi sytuacji rodzin seniorów, którzy decyzją własną albo rodziny zamieszkali w całodobowej instytucji opiekuńczej, jaką jest dom pomocy społecznej. Analiza przeprowadzona w artykule ma na celu ukazanie tego typu instytucji opiekuńczej w perspektywie potrzeb rodzin mieszkańców domu pomocy społecznej. Na przykładzie Domu Pomocy Społecznej w Staniątkach pod Krakowem zostaną ukazane sposoby współpracy z rodzinami mieszkańców oraz wyzwania dla takiej współpracy. Poruszane wątki będą ukazywane z perspektywy podmiotu rozważań, a mianowicie z perspektywy rodziny seniora, a nie przez pryzmat jego samego. W tym sensie senior będzie pośrednim podmiotem niniejszych rozważań.
The aim of the article is to show what is the social situation of elderly family in the wide context of social care patterns and tendencies. Decision about living in the nursing home is changing the whole life and relations between old age person and his or her family. The current analysis is to show this kind of institution by the prism of family and elderly needs. Nursing Home in Staniątki near Cracow is presented as a good example of cooperation with elderly families. The way of contacts and cooperation, applied in this institution are shown as the good practice of support family, which member lives in the closed institution of care. The perspective of family needs is chosen to discuss dilemmas and other details to build as good cooperation as it could be.

Wieloletni program „Senior+” na lata 2015–2020 przyjęty Uchwałą nr 34 przez Radę Ministrów w dniu 17 marca 2015 r. to kolejny dokument rządowy o charakterze planistycznym, który dotyczy problematyki aktywizacji osób starszych. Przedmiotem opracowania jest przede wszystkim analiza obowiązującego stanu prawnego, stanowiska judykatury oraz doktryny na temat realizacji zadań. Rozważania prowadzone są z punktu widzenia form i sposobów realizacji przez gminę zadań w zakresie aktywizacji osób starszych w ramach programu „Senior+” oraz oceny charakteru tych zadań. W artykule zastosowano przede wszystkim metodę teoretyczno-dogmatyczną.
The multiannual "Senior +" program for 2015-2020 adopted by resolution No. 34 by The Council of Ministers on March 17, 2015 is a planning act that addresses the issue of activation of senior citizens. The subject of the study is primarily the presentation of the current legal status and jurisprudence on the implementation of tasks specified in this act. Considerations are conducted from the point of view of forms and ways of implementing tasks by the commune in the area of activating elderly people under the "Senior +" program and assessing the nature of these tasks. The article employs the theoretical and dogmatic method.

Wśród słuchaczy-seniorów Uniwersytetu III Wieku funkcjonującego przy Uniwersytecie Rzeszowski przeprowadzono ankietę dotyczącą znajomości blogosfery. Wyniki i konkluzje przedstawiono w artykule.
Possibility of communicating via the Internet is clear and accessible. Information sent by the web can reach recipients with no time or location limits. Media space, developing so dynamically, is providing more and more new possibilities for the elderly. To maintain positive self-image, a person who is getting old should undertake new kinds of activities and replace the lost or fading social roles with others. At present, blogs are one of the popular forms of communication. They can be a fascinating activity for the elderly. Many of them set up their blogs currently. A survey was conducted by the author on blogosphere among the 3rd Age University students at Rzeszow University. In the article, results and conclusions are discussed.

Introduction: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the development of scientific output, while also to define the scope of the subject matter of research in the sphere of the physical activity of senior citizens. The research process concentrates on the following research questions: In what way has the research output developed in the field of research on the physical activity of senior citizens? Who is the principal participant (countries, universities, authors, source titles in terms of accumulating the research subject matter in a particular field? What are the prominent subject areas that attract the greatest attention among the academic environment? Research material: Scopus data was availed in the process of selecting a research sample as the source of bibliometric data. The research data (N = 415) consisted of publications which included such phrases in their contents as: “Physically Active Elderly, Physically Active Seniors, Physically Active Older Adults” in their titles or key words. The process of analysis and visualization of the findings was supported by the use of MS Excel software. Results: The research illustrated that the physical activity of the elderly is a field of science that has a long tradition. In 2011, it gained increasingly high levels of interest among the academic environment, which in turn bore fruit in terms of the breakthrough growth in the number of publications in 2014 that are indexed in Scopus data. This scientific output encompasses 20 research areas. Conclusions: The principal areas of the greatest number of publications relate to the activity of the elderly are to be found in the areas of medical science and health science. The main authors and co-authors in this field of research are as follows: the representatives of the USA, whereas the most productive research institute is The University of British Columbia. The author of the largest number of publications is Rodríguez-Artalejo from Spain. The main sponsors of research activities in the sphere of the physical activity of the elderly are the National Institutes of Health.

Problematyka, do której odnosi się niniejszy temat, dotyczy aktywizacji osób starszych we współczesnych polskich miastach. Szacuje się, że ponad 1,3 miliona seniorów w Polsce potrzebuje opieki, co więcej za 20 lat co czwarta osoba będzie miała więcej niż 65 lat. W obliczu starzenia się ludności niezbędna jest zmiana modelu społeczeństwa, aby osoby starsze mogły do późnych lat życia pozostawać w dotychczasowym miejscu zamieszkania i żyć samodzielnie. Kluczem do lepszej starości jest aktywność, zarówno fizyczna, kulturalna, jak społeczna i obywatelska. Senior w nowoczesnym mieście powinien być osobą aktywną, czynnie i biernie udzielającą się w codziennym życiu osiedla i miasta. Większość ludzkiego życia toczy się wokół miejsca zamieszkania, zwłaszcza w przypadku osób starszych, które nie muszą już uczęszczać do pracy. Najbliższe otoczenie powinno być pierwszym szczeblem w budowie drabiny solidarności międzypokoleniowej, polegającej na wymianie pomocy. Zintegrowanie tych niewielkich społeczności lokalnych, które będą zapewniały wzajemne wsparcie, może przyczynić się do odbudowy kapitału społecznego kraju. Odwołując się do badań prowadzonych przez autorkę na wrocławskim osiedlu Popowice, poddano analizie problemy, z jakimi borykają się osoby w podeszłym wieku, zamieszkujące typowe polskie osiedla. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na potrzeby tej grupy społecznej - starszych mieszkańców, a których to potrzeby powinny stać się bazą do kształtowania miejsc dedykowanych seniorom, sektora usług oraz oferty rozwijającej i aktywizującej starsze osoby.
The issue of the current topic, touches the need of activation older people in Polish cities today. It is estimated that more than 1.3 million seniors in Poland need care, moreover, in 20 years every fourth person will be more than 65 years old. Facing society ageing, we need to change the lifestyle model so that older people could stay in the same place and live independently. Physical activity, cultural as well as social are the key to good old age. Senior in a modern city should be actively engaged in social live, active and passive involved in the daily life of the closes neighborhood and the city. Most of human life takes place around the place of residence, especially for older people who no longer have to attend work. The closest surroundings are the first to build a ladder of intergenerational solidarity that involves the exchange of help. Integration this small social networks which may be helpful to each other, can contribute to the reconstruction of the country's social capital. Referring to the research conducted by the author, on the Popowice housing estate in Wrocław, the problems faced by elderly people living in typical Polish settlements were analyzed. Special attention was paid to needs of this social group, which should become the basis for designing places dedicated to elderly people, as well as developing services and activation issues.

The article presents the opportunities the church institutions have to stimulate the older generation. The Church plays an important role in seniors' life and religious practices and their awareness of being needful for the church is very important. Religiousness is also a form of leisure activities preferred by older adults. From this perspective we can see how great potential the church has to activate seniors. In addition to evangelization and worship church is able to offer them a lot of proposals meeting their socio-cultural and educational needs. Education provided by church is not limited to the Bible only, it is present during pilgrimages to the holy places, prayer meetings and social events, trips to cinema, theater and in the organizing of various events not strictly connected with religious practices. The most important thing is that all forms of seniors' animation bring the possibility of interpersonal contacts what is very important for this age group and highly improves the quality of their lives.

At the beginning of the article an analysis is made about new applications of commonly known terms, such as retirement pension, geriatric, grey or silver tsunami, and “election retirement pensions”, covering among others civic retirement pension, maternal retirement pension, 13th and 14th bonus retirement pension, guaranteed retirement pension and non-taxed retirement pension. There are also presented demographic changes in Poland in the last half-century (1967–2017) and their consequences. Another thematic thread concerns senior policy, its genesis and attempt to defining what it is, and its main goals. Senior policy which is being created in Poland can be successfully implemented on three basic levels: governmental, self-governmental and non-governmental (civic). Activities addressed to seniors can be divided in at least six areas: 1) activity and activation of older people; 2) education; 3) culture and mass media; 4) legislation and legal assistance; 5) social assistance and support, and 6) health and preventive care. This paper discusses examples of activities in the above ranges, and in the final passage of this text we have discussion on the senior policy in contemporary Poland trying to answer vital questions: do we have in Poland social policy addressing the problems of elderly people?, and if the term ‘senior policy’ not a ‘semantic abuse’?

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the elderly in a special way. On the one hand, it contributed to the increase in health deficits and those related to social isolation. On the other hand, it also had a significant impact on the level and methods of support provided to seniors. The pandemic situation turned out to be a particular challenge for local governments and non-governmental organisations operating in various areas of senior policy. The general aim of the article was to analyse the state’s initiatives aimed at counteracting the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic addressed to seniors and examples of activities of the local government and the civil sector cooperating with it for the benefit of this group of people. In turn, the specific objective was to identify and understand the greatest difficulties that seniors had during the pandemic and the role played by the non-governmental organisation (both during the pandemic and as an entity of potential support in the future, which was particularly interesting given the European Union promoting services provided in the local environment). In connection with the specific objective, qualitative research was carried out using the in-depth interview method. The interviews were based on scripts that concerned four areas: problems and experiences of the elderly during the pandemic, help and support, communication, health, and well-being.

The experiences and migration strategies of senior migrants differ significantly from those of their younger counterparts. However, since migration flows are dominated by younger migrants, the recent Polish migration discourse tends to present the younger migrants’ perspective. This article addresses this research gap by exploring the migration experience of older Polish migrants to the United Kingdom (UK). The types of older migrants currently living in the UK are discussed: namely those who have lived in the UK for several decades and those who have migrated late in life. The experiences and attitudes of both groups are then explored and compared in order to expose several assumptions concerning older migrants: the immobility of seniors; the vulnerability of older migrants; and seniors migrating exclusively as part of care networks. The article is based on qualitative research conducted in the UK in 2005–2009 and in 2017.

Demografię Polski charakteryzują dwa współwystępujące zjawiska: niska dzietność i coraz większa długośćżycia. W efekcie w naszym społeczeństwie wzrasta udział osób starszych oraz niesamodzielnych. Główną tendencją w formalnej opiece nad osobami niesamo-dzielnymi, do których należą wymagający wsparcia seniorzy, jest deinstytucjonalizacja. Pod tym pojęciem rozumie się działania podejmowane na rzecz tworzenia różnych form usług (również zdrowotnych) w środowisku mających na celu zapewnienie właściwej opieki oraz wydłużenie okresu sprawności psychofizycznej oraz możliwości pełnienia ról społecz-nych izawodowych. Przesłanki deinstytucjonalizacji mają zarówno charakter ekonomiczny (koszt opieki stacjonarnej), jak i społeczny (preferencje klientów). Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie deinstytucjonalizacji usług dla seniorów jako elementu polityki senio-ralnej w Polsce. Analiza przytoczonych wyników badań i kontroli wskazuje na potrzebępilnych działań informacyjno-edukacyjnych w zakresie przebiegu i efektów procesu dein-stytucjonalizacji skierowanych do kadry instytucji świadczących usługi opiekuńcze oraz zawiera konkretne propozycje w tym zakresie.
The demography of Poland is characterized by the two coexisting phenomena: low birth rate and growing longevity. As the result of these mentioned above demographic pheno-mena there is growing number of the old and dependent people. The main tendency in formal care for the elderly is deinstitutionalization. Deinstitutionalization is defined as the creating of different forms of community services so that good quality care and indepen-dent life of the elderly will be longer. There are good economic (cost of residential care) and social (clients’ priorities) reasons for deinstitutionalization. The main objective of this article is presentation of deinstitutionalization of social services for the elderly as an element of the senior policy in Poland. The analysis of data coming from empirical studies shows that there is an urgent need for the informative and educational actions in this field.
