In the article the problem of semiosis of the global topie in verbal and visual texts is taken into consideration. In the first section a theoretical framework is introduced, in the second verbal text (i.e. the genre of the synthesis of Polish national history) is elaborated, in the third the similar discussion on visual ‘texts’ is conducted, while in the fourth section finał remarks are provided with additional suggestions concerning further investigations.The opening remarks concern the very idea of the topie in verbal texts, notably in historical texts (the operational term finał—taken from semiotic works of Boris Uspienski - is introduced). The finał - interrelated with the global topie and genre - organizes the whole historical narration and establishes its cohesion; their overwhelming presence enables grasping the very act of data interpretation. Every event or historical figurę conceptualized in a historical narration (for instance the Prussian Homage in 1525 or Polish king Sigismund) receives its own meaning only insofar as it maintains its constant relation with the global topie expressed by the title (top-down and bottom-up mechanisms).There are some similarities that the title and global topie possess in the acts of interpretation of painting, notably realistic representations of historical events. For example a piece of Jan Matejko entitled Hołd Pruski (Prussian Homage) imposes on an observer a set of connotative features deeply rooted in the Polish imaginery encoded in language and structured by the national narration. This particular example opens up a discussion about the function of the verbal title and visual ‘text’ in pieces of Giorgione, Rene Magritte, Kazimierz Malewicz, Marek Rostworowski.The analysis is not finished; it only sketches a very generał problem of interrelation of verbal and visual codes that could be analyzed within the field of semiotics and semiotics of culture.

This paper is an attempt at reconstructing and recontextualizing the semiotic understanding of culture and literature as a key aspect of the theory of interpretation by Władysław Panas. Special emphasis is put on the debate on this aspect in the context of Panas' analysis of the semiotic discourse proposed by the Moscow-Tartu school, presented in his book W kręgu metody semiotycznej [In the realm of the semiotic method]. According to Panas, the Moscow-Tartu conception has it that semiotics comes into being as a holistic, constantly developing text, as the “Other” struggling for his/her memory and for multiplicity of voices.

Europe as a sign in the Yugoslav Communist newspeak basing on the Tito’s addresses Although the Yugoslav Communist newspeak resembled the Polish one on the formal level, it significantly different conceptualized and evaluated the extra‑linguistic reality, including primarily notions referring to main subjects of the international politics. It resulted from a diverse place the Communist Yugoslavia had in the Cold War order and its role within the non‑allied countries. As a result semantic relations were different in this discourse. The aim of this article is a reconstruction of the content of one of the most important signs in this language – the sign of Europe basing on the Yugoslav dictator’s (Josip Broz Tito) addresses. The research demonstrates that the cultural and social‑political context imposed other connotative features on the notion of Europe. As the result it has completely different functions that its Polish equivalent. This in turn leads to different types semiosis of this sign in both cultures and other signs coming from the same semantic field.

Antonina Kłoskowska publikując w 1964 roku „Kulturę masową” nie tylko zaprezentowała swój stosunek do tej postaci manifestacji kultury, ale także wypracowała podstawowe instrumentarium jej analizy. W precyzowaniu przez autorkę pojęcia kultury jako obszaru badań ważne miejsce zajęły inspiracje zaczerpnięte z semiotyki. Z czasem kwestie semiotyczne znalazły się w centrum rozważań A. Kłoskowskiej dotyczących określenia pola zainteresowań socjologii kultury. Ich podsumowaniem była „Socjologia kultury” z 1981 roku. Zawarte w niej ustalenia były później punktem odniesienia dla tekstów drukowanych w latach dziewięćdziesiątych minionego stulecia. To prawda, że wówczas już same kwestie semiotyczne nie zajmowały pierwszoplanowego miejsca w tych studiach, ale w zadziwiający sposób współbrzmią te teksty z propozycjami rozwijanymi w obszarze semiotyki, w podejściu wyodrębniającym się jako semioetyka. Nie tylko są więc one odpowiedzią autorki na wyzwania współczesności, ale mogą być źródłem inspiracji dla nowych pokoleń czytelników.
Antonina Kłoskowska, publishing in “Mass Culture” in 1964, not only presented her approach to those types of cultural manifestations, but also elaborated the basic set of instruments for their analysis. In the author’s specification of the concept of culture as a specific area of scientific research, she took special inspiration from the field of semiotics. Over time, semiotic issues and questions became the focus of her considerations as she defined her own field of interest in the sociology of culture. She encapsulated her research interests in “The Sociology of Culture” in 1981. Her postulates from this article later became the focal point for her work in the 1990s. While it’s true that questions concerning semiotics per se were not the main focus of these studies, her texts resonate in a surprisingly way with propositions rooted in the field of semiotics, resulting in the development of her unique approach based on semioethics. Thus not only do the author’s postulates represent a contemporary challenge, but they also constitute a source of inspiration for a new generation of readers.

Yuri Lotman started his research activity in the field of literary theory (widely: theory of culture) as orthodox structuralist at the beginning of the 1970s. The concept of structure has been based on the structural linguistic theories and adopted to develop research on literary works as well as “cultural texts”. The last ones concern the perception of structure not only in terms of the “level of expression”, but also the “level of content” that can be analysed with the use of peculiar procedures. The strict procedures rely on distinguishing the set of “binary oppositions” in the “structure of content” to illustrate the author’s perception of reality and his “model of the world”. Lotman was convinced that ideological and artistic structures are immersed in history. They have a dynamic nature (likewise the culture which was seen as the complicated “semiosphere” with its processes, predictable or unpredictable as well as the innovative “explosion” mechanisms). Therefore, Lotman in his later years moves away from cultural self-models based on “binary oppositions” to “ternary” system. In spite of the evident evolution of his concepts Lotman was always devoted to the doctrine of knowledge and never left the humanistic ideals using them for research purposes. The scientific models and sources of inspiration could be changeable, but pathos and scientific rationality never left him. His structuralism was at its peak with possibility of evolution, infinitely flexible, individual, accidental, unpredictable or even “explosive”, but never was the betrayal of previous ideals.

The author writes about Professor Żółkiewski’s connection with the Institute of Literary Research, of which he was the founder and first director, and about the establishment of the Workshop on Research into Literary Culture and the creation of a new discipline—knowledge of literary culture. The author remembers Professor Żółkiewski as her mentor and friend.

Der Beitrag enthält einen theoretischen und methodologischen Umriss der interdisziplinären Untersuchungen der Phraseologie, in dem wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse der Etymologie und Kultursemiotik integriert werden. Das angebotene Modell platziert Phraseologismen in den Kontext der sprachhistorischen Recherche, die eins der größten Defizite der aktuellen Phraseologieforschung bildet. Die dargestellte Methodologie umfasst auch komparative interlinguale Forschungsaspekte.
The paper contains a theoretical and methodological outline of research into phraseology which integrates evaluations of etymology and the semiotics of culture. The research model presented places the phraseological units in the context of the historical research of language which is one of the most remarkable deficits in the contemporary research into phraseology. The methodology presented covers also some comparative interlingual aspects.
Artykuł zawiera zarys teoretyczny i metodologiczny badań interdyscyplinarnych nad frazeologią, integrujący rozpoznania naukowe etymologii i semiotyki kultury. Opisywany model plasuje frazeologizmy w kontekście badań historycznojęzykowych, które stanowią jeden z najdotkliwszych deficytów współczesnej frazeologii. Przedstawiona metodologia obejmuje także komparatywne aspekty interlingualne.

After G.W.F. Hegel’s The Phenomenology of Spirit and Ludwig Feuerbach’s The Essence of Christianity, the issue of alienation is considered to be a significant object of study. Sociology — which attempts to dominate studies on this concept — is a discipline which rather single-mindedly interprets the phenomena rooted in the religious reality, and one should not rely solely on its analyses. By the same token, semiotics should be treated with similar distrust, even though the impact of Old Believers on the development of Russian culture is widely emphasised in the works of Russian semioticians. The reason for that stems from the claim for being a universal method — which hence is forced to refer to a universal object — that semiotics has shared; the mentioned object has been culture. The idea of subsuming phenomena of different categories under a common denominator in the course of interpretation has led to a situation in which the semiotic means have turned to be but metaphors, even though semioticians have argued for their ontological statues. Precisely this aspect should be noted, as it proves that semiotics — with its universalist claims — appears to blur the boundaries between sociological stratum, and the one oriented towards philosophy and theology. From the point of view expressed by Orthodox Christianity, the true tragic alienation relies not on the distance separating one from culture and society, but rather on the one which detaches one from God — the creator of being. The case of Old Believers exemplifies a convoluted situation, as the bone of contention has been provided by liturgy, which is, in other words, the space in which a human being encounters God. If, therefore, this issue is related to culture, then it is so precisely through its metaphysical aspect. Neither sociology nor philosophy — and even not semiotics, recently withdrawing from cultural studies, which it used to dominate — has been capable of interpreting the phenomenon of Old Believers as thoroughly as theology and history of Church. Relying on the scientist methodology, the former group of disciplines has not included such significant aspects of the culture of Orthodox Christianity as anthropology, dogmatics, state theology, or liturgics. Without those aspects, any attempt which aims at explaining the issue of Old Believers happens to be inaccurate.

The article discusses the issue of proper names defined as symptoms of culture. The first part is of a theoretical character and develops the theory of symptomatology of culture in the context of semiotics (Ch. Peirce), psychology and psychoanalysis (S. Freud and J. Lacan), and onomastics. Symptomatology of culture is a practice of interpreting a certain group of texts of culture and extracting common qualitative traits within them. This is especially in the case of those traits specific to them and often encountered, which could testify to particular serious and deeply-rooted social phenomena leading to their appearance. In the empirical part the author presents a way of using (onymic) symptomatology in practice to research modern culture. She uses the examples of popular psychological and auto-therapeutic guidebooks and treats them as linguistic symptomatic forms of the most significant linguistic and cultural phenomena along with their social causes and functions which are often dysfunctional or abnormal in character. The analysis comprises the most typical conceptual and syntactic constructions encountered in the group.

For sociologically oriented research into memory, the finding of connections between cultural mechanisms of constructing the past and their socio-structural effects is important. In this context, a principle linking phenomena of memory, culture, and social structure should be of use. This article is devoted to Yuri Lotman’s concept of the semiotic memory of culture, which the author believes could serve as a generative rule for this type of research in the sociology of culture. In the case of studies on social memory, Lotman’s concept constitutes a methodological bridge between phenomena of social memory and the transmission of culture, enabling the question of how the memory of the individual participates in collective memory to be answered.

The article discusses the transformation of the Other’s concept in Post-Soviet popular culture, as well as the transformation of perception of “Self” and “Other” due to the emergence of real (state) and cultural borders and demarcations, which appear during the reader-text interaction. The paper explores such novels as M. Galina’s “Autochthony” and “The Little Glusha”, and V. Arenev’s “Gunpowder of the Dragon Bones”, to identify the types of the reader’s comprehension. The readers, in their turn, are divided into groups, which identify “Self” and “Other” in accordance with the division, represented in the novels. The author of the paper explores the version of the time gap (the comprehension of M. Galina’s “The Little Glusha”), as well as the different comprehension of the above-mentioned concepts by Russian and Ukrainian readers, regarding the social and cultural distances between these countries. The presented study explains the awareness of the Other’s concept, as well as recognition of Self, which is represented from the outside of the actual cultural tradition.

The present paper proposes a semiotic description, analysis and interpretation of the (extra-liturgical) ritual gestures, attested in the traditional Polish family and year-cycle rituals. Basing on the principles outlined by the Tartu-Moscow school of semiotics, the author builds a framework for the description of a ritual gesture. The structure of such gestures is defined on three levels of semiotic description: syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. The research method applied in the study allows for building a comprehensive explication of individual gestures by extracting meaningful aspects of their structure, indicating relationships between them and putting them against the symbolic, cultural context.

Opis:
The article focuses on intertextual relationships observed between literature and painting. The visual and linguistic systems comprising these art forms belong to different semiotic codes, which materialise through secondary modelling systems. The modelling systems, in turn, consist of relational signs and are governed by rules allowing for alternative modes of combination. The relational signs are ontologically discrete and, as a result, have a greater connotative than denotative potential. The rules of combination are restricted by literary genres, composition, and a painting perspective that constitute the macrostructure of a text. The aim of the article is to present how languages and visual signs express the same mental operations and establish an intertextual dialogue in a literary and visual text. The premise of the study is the assumption that a word and a picture are equivalent and translatable. Therefore, the grounds for their description should be the composition of signs and its relationship with other texts of culture, not the form that constitutes them
