Opis:
The article under consideration is devoted to the semiotic analyses of the biblical apostle Judas Iscariot, one of the most contradictory religious characters. The article demonstrates the semiotic paradigm of Judas, including portrait semiotics (paleness, timidity, secrecy and slouch), gesture semiotics (abrupt movements) and symbolic semiotics (hopelessness, suicide). The research stresses the aspect of venality. It is proved that Judas Iscariot became the archetype of venality not only in literature, but in art generally. The article’s summary will be used for students learning literary criticism and philologists.

Opis:
In the article the problem of semiosis of the global topie in verbal and visual texts is taken into consideration. In the first section a theoretical framework is introduced, in the second verbal text (i.e. the genre of the synthesis of Polish national history) is elaborated, in the third the similar discussion on visual ‘texts’ is conducted, while in the fourth section finał remarks are provided with additional suggestions concerning further investigations. The opening remarks concern the very idea of the topie in verbal texts, notably in historical texts (the operational term finał—taken from semiotic works of Boris Uspienski - is introduced). The finał - interrelated with the global topie and genre - organizes the whole historical narration and establishes its cohesion; their overwhelming presence enables grasping the very act of data interpretation. Every event or historical figurę conceptualized in a historical narration (for instance the Prussian Homage in 1525 or Polish king Sigismund) receives its own meaning only insofar as it maintains its constant relation with the global topie expressed by the title (top-down and bottom-up mechanisms). There are some similarities that the title and global topie possess in the acts of interpretation of painting, notably realistic representations of historical events. For example a piece of Jan Matejko entitled Hołd Pruski (Prussian Homage) imposes on an observer a set of connotative features deeply rooted in the Polish imaginery encoded in language and structured by the national narration. This particular example opens up a discussion about the function of the verbal title and visual ‘text’ in pieces of Giorgione, Rene Magritte, Kazimierz Malewicz, Marek Rostworowski. The analysis is not finished; it only sketches a very generał problem of interrelation of verbal and visual codes that could be analyzed within the field of semiotics and semiotics of culture.

Opis:
The gloss is inspired by the Małgorzata Jankowska’s monography Vitality of the Canon. Semiotics of Modern Apocrypha and aims at presenting the complex relations between life and text – understood not only metaphorically, but also literally. Starting with the Yuri Lotman’s expression ‘the life of the text’ the author focuses on the one of the basic features of the semiosphere, i.e. dynamics and remaining unfinished. Referring to the so-called late Lotman, the author discusses such issues as explosion, unpredictability and motion in the relation to the text. The next part of the paper contains certain remarks on the convergences of Lotmanian and Mikhail Bakhtin’s view on the cultural dynamics and vitality of the text. The issue of the life of the text in the view of hermeneutics is being discussed in the next part of the article. The author refers to Gianni Vattimo’s concept of the transparency and ‘opaqueness’ as its opposite and juxtaposes it with the hermeneutic notion of the understanding which should not be fully performed. Apparently the lack of transparency and being not fully understood is what provides the desirable dynamics of text and culture. As Lotman writes, the text which is fully understood can only be displayed in a museum - it does not have a semiotic life any more. To interpret means to live – a text requires multiple interpretations and contexts to be alive.

This article attempts to demonstrate the potential of semiotics for translation studies. Even though semiotic paradigms can be observed across certain theories advocated by translation scholars, it seems that a clear and integrated semiotics-based model of translation has not been developed yet. The hypotheses developed in the article may help to answer the question whether it is feasible to draw a relevant model of translation that would include categories for the most significant variables influencing the process of translation. To this end the article offers an analysis of various research models and discusses the potential of a semiotic framework of reference.

Opis:
This paper tackles the issue of the lack of a substantially new approach to classifying the interpreters’ notes. In my paper, I highlight the fact that the researchers in the field are yet to agree on the contents of interpreters’ notes, and that is, in my opinion, the problem that is numerously stumbled upon in consecutive interpretation research in general and note-taking research in particular. Not only do researchers invent new classifications within an excising paradigm, sometimes they contradict each other presenting different definitions for the same concepts. This paper attempts to solve the issue by introducing a new perspective on the contents of interpreters’ notes by adapting the human-centered approach and turning to the “writers” of the notes, the interpreters. The interpreter trainees who participated in this research were interviewed to obtain an in-depth understanding of what is included in interpreters’ notes. Under the semiotic perspective, which assumes both linguistic and non-linguistic notes as a system of signs, I classified the interpreters’ notes based on the subject’s comments to the notes they had written. This retrospective approach unveiled how interpreter trainees perceive their notes which prompt meaning-making and facilitate the memory when delivering interpretation.

The culture of signs is a recurrent term in philosophy. It does not allow mindless programs to win. Thanks to it, it is possible to put trust in model, holistic approaches rather than the linguistic determination of meanings. The process of departing from philosophical reflection, which has always been holistic, expressed with the diagram: ideas – notions – definitions, is here reversed. Presentations allow the return to ideas; ideas have more of the imaginary than the symbolic. The concept of the Body without Organs depicts a new form of sensualisation directed not at gaining permanent representations but at the possibilities of switching various functions of experience.

The reflection on the theory of interpretation described in this article is based on the text “The Third Meaning” by Roland Barthes. Analyzing photographs from the Eisenstein’s films Barthes tries to name a moment of surprise, which cannot be verbalized. It is possible to find a similar moment of astonishment in every act of interpretation of an artwork. That is the pre-reflective and preverbal level of interpretation, connected to the sphere of emotions, intuition and sensual perception. That is the “third sense” (significance), a special quality of the contact between the work and its viewer. The recipient is located between the direct (aesthetic) experience and (impossible to describe) cognition.

The article concerns the relations between the main character of the film Sara (directed by M. Ślesicki in 1997) and books (especially Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment) in the context of social and political changes in Poland in the 1990s. The presence of books in popular Polish films from that period is not described in research, hence this article provides a short introduction to this subject. The main hypothesis of the paper is that the presence of books on the margins of narration in popular films reflects social changes in thinking about literature.

Professor Jerzy Pelc was the creator and long-time manager of the Department of Logical Semiotics, University of Warsaw. He also founded the Polish Society of Semiotics. He published six own books, among others Studies in Functional Logical Semiotics of Natural Language (1971; in English); he edited also dozens of volumes of Semiotic Studies and Library of Semiotic Thought.  As Kotarbiński, his master, and Twardowski, the master of his master, Professor Pelc was a radical rationalist. This radical rationalism has linked him to atheism, anti-communism, a distance to politics, and a frown on the falsehood of public life. He was a great patriot – in his life and in his work. He considered himself a successor of the Lvov-Warsaw School tradition. In the field of metaphysics, Professor Pelc combined theoretical minimalism with anti-rationalist attitudes, including the postulate of precision and the requirement of criticism. The main field of his interest was logical – and broader: theoretical – semiotics. He advocated and largely developed the functional concept of signs. To traditional paradigms of research: historical, teleological, causal and prognostic ones – Professor Pelc has added a semiotic paradigm, determined by the question “What does it mean that p?”. Referring to the interdisciplinary fashion for interdisciplinary research, he conducted an analysis of the notion of interdisciplinarity. In ontology, he analyzed the notions of object and causality. In his approach, aesthetics was treated form a semiotic point of view: he sought mainly ways to logically rewrite its terminology. In particular, he reconstructed the main aesthetic notions: form and ideology (of literary works), theme, motive, metaphor and (literary) fiction – as well as semiotic notions essential to the description of literary arts, namely the notions of assertion and intensionality. In the field of ethics, Professor Pelc declared himself as an advocate of the ideal of trustworthy guardian, which he took over from his teacher, Kotarbiński. In metaethics, he analyzed the notions of norm, evaluation and humanity. A master of Polish: beautiful Polish – he was certainly a true humanist.

Opis:
Cognition is meant as the process of acquiring knowledge from the world. This process is supposed to happen within agents, which build such knowledge with the purpose to use it to determine their actions on the world. Following Peircean ideas, we postulate that such knowledge is encoded by means of signs. According to Peirce, signs are anything that can be used to represent anything else. Also, for Peirce, to represent means to be able to generate another sign, called the interpretant of the original sign, which still holds the same power of interpretability, I.e, its power to be transformed into a new sign, holding this same power. This happens through a processcalled semiosis, the process by which a sign is transformed into an interpretant. This whole process is performed with the aim of subsidizing the agent in deciding its behavior. So, even though the semiosis process has the power to continue infinitely, it usually stops whenever the generated interpretant brings enough information in order for the agent to effectively act in the world. We take signals to be the substract of signs. Signals are any physical property, which can be measured and captured by the agent, by means of its sensors. This includes any kind of internal memory the agent is able to have access, in order to operate. In this sense, signs can be both in the world (if these signals come from sensors) and within the own agent’s mind (if signals come from an internal memory). We understandan agent’s mind as the agents’ control system. In either case, signals can be abstracted as numbers. Not simply numbers, but numbers coming from specific sensors or specific memories. Using ideas from Peircean philosophy, in this work we postulate a pathway, in which signals, collected by either sensors or memory, can be organized in such a way that they can be effectively used as knowledge, in order for an agent to be able to decide its actions on the world, on the pursuit of its internal motivations. We postulate that agents identify and create a model of the world based on possibilities, existents, and laws, and based on this model, they are able to decide an action that maximizes the chance for the world to gain a shape, which the agents intend for it to be. This theory is postulated particularly for the case of artificial autonomous agents, meant to be constructed by engineering artifacts.
