The aim of the study was to recognize the early diagenetic transformations of clay minerals likely taking place in the brackish environment of Gdańsk Bay (Baltic Sea). The Vistula River loads and sediments of the Vistula delta front and prodelta were studied. The mineral compositions of the clay fractions were determined by X-ray diffractometry. The average layer charge (LC) of the expandable interlayers was determined using the O-D vibrational spectroscopy method. The major element content of the studied clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The <0.2 μm clay fraction, separated from the river sediments, contained illite-smectite mixed layered minerals, rich in high-charge, dioctahedral smectite (Ilt-Sme), illite, and kaolinite. The same clay fraction, separated from the delta-front sediments, was also composed mainly of Ilt-Sme, illite, kaolinite, and hydroxy-interlayered minerals. The <0.2 μm clay fraction from the prodelta sediments was depleted in Ilt-Sme and enriched in illite and chlorite, relative to the clays from both the river and the delta-front sediments. The LCs (0.45 to 0.56 per formula unit) were higher for clays from the river and the delta front sediments, relative to the clays from the prodelta. The <0.2 μm clay fractions from the prodelta sediments were enriched in MgO, Fe2O3, and K2O, relative to the fine clay fraction from the river. The results indicated that the smectite component of Ilt-Sme, deposited by the Vistula in Gdańsk Bay, underwent chloritization and likely illitization. The chloritization most likely proceeded via formation of hydroxy-interlayers within the smectite. Illite-like minerals, formed at the expense of the smectite with high LC, due to selective adsorption and fixation of K+ from seawater.

Ecological and geochemical indicators have been widely accepted as tools with the potential for rapid risk assessment of metal contamination of bottom sediments. In this study we propose a selection of such indicators to characterize the potential ecological risks stemming from metal contamination of the bottom sediments of the Chechło reservoir (S Poland). The Chechło reservoir is located in an area formerly occupied by zinc and lead ore mining and processing industry. High amounts of metals, especially zinc (39.37–4772.00 mg/kg d.m.), cadmium (0.37–21.13 mg/kg d.m.) and lead (4.50–434.49 mg/kg d.m.) have been found in the bottom sediments. Both geochemical (CD – contamination degree) and ecological indices (mean PECQ) were indicative of bottom sediment contamination and their potential toxicity to living organisms. Most of the bottom sediment samples (71%) examined were toxic for Heterocypris incongruens, while only 9% of the samples were toxic to Sinapis alba. However, no significant correlations between the metal content and the response of the test organisms were observed. Correlation and principal component analyses (PCA) showed that silt and clay fractions were the key factors influencing the metal content in the sediments. Our study makes a contribution to building evidence of the need to integrate several indices for the assessment of environmental risks related to the presence of metals in bottom sediments rather than relying on a single one.

Opis:
The west coast of Camau (Southeast Vietnam) connects two semi-enclosed East Sea and Thailand Bays, allowing water exchange between them. Despite its importance to the oceanographic evolution of the region, it has still been poorly studied. Therefore, Subbottom profilers are used across shallow sea waters with some applications, such as sea-level studies, sedimentation process and geomorphology. In the whole survey area, 6 high-resolution shallow seismic measurements have been performed with a total length of 60.6 km, and all have recorded good reflected signals in the range 20–70 ms. In this section, physical characteristics and nature of petrology in the survey environment are quite uniformly shown. The topography of the seabed in the survey area tends to be gradually shallower from west to east, and is relatively flat. Particularly, on the cross section of the T1 line, it is visible that the first section of the line has a rather steep and deep terrain, which may be the slope of the continental shelf in the survey area. Wedge-shaped, oblique, corrugated and transverse structures all appear on the cross-sections. In the survey area, the shallow geological structure in the Holocene sediments is divided into 4 layers, and the structural boundary between the Holocene and Pleistocene sediments at the depth of 25–35 m is observed. In addition, geological faults are also detected on geological sections from seismic sections. For instance, at the section of T6 line, two faults were detected at the beginning of the line. The displacement amplitude of these faults ranges between 1.5–4 m. This new dataset will contribute to future comprehension of the geologic and oceanographic evolution.

Heavy, black manganese pebbles have been found in the clastic sediments of the Hochschartehöhlensystem (the Northern Calcareous Alps). Six selected pebbles were subjected to X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and optical and electron microscopy analysis. The results reveal that the main component of the pebbles is manganese silicate, braunite, Mn2+Mn3+6(SiO4)O8. Braunite is a mineral formed at elevated temperatures, mainly through hydrothermal, metamorphic or diagenetic processes. This means that the manganese pebbles were formed outside the caves. However, manganese rock was not found in situ on the surface of the Hoher Göll Massif. This probably indicates that their origin is from eroded parts of Mesozoic rocks. The first studies of pebbles and their mineralogy, by analogy with contemporary marine sediments, indicate that their genesis is related to spreading zones and accompanies hydrothermal vents. The analysed material highlights two important issues: (1) the manganese pebbles are significant arguments for the occurrence of hydrothermal vents in the Northern Calcareous Alps; and (2) the importance of cave sediments studies, which provide relevant evidence for palaeogeographic reconstruction.

The present paper discusses a palaeoenvironmental interpretation of the Oligocene Ogwashi Formation (Niger Delta Basin, Nigeria) through morphometric analysis of pebbles, a research method essentially depending on the quantitative evaluation of pebble size and shape which change during transport processes in a range of depositional environments. The relationship of bivariate and ternary-diagram plots of independent functions was determined from freshly exposed sandstone sections in quarries at Ibusa, near Asaba, Nigeria. The grain size of pebbles ranges from fine (11.00 mm) to very coarse (41.33 mm), with a mean size of 21.05 mm (coarse pebbles). A bivariate plot of the flatness index vs maximum projection sphericity index shows 37% of the pebbles to fall within a beach (marine) environment, and 33% within a fluvial environment; the remaining 30% are uncertain. The maximum projection sphericity index vs oblate-prolate index bivariate plot indicates that 47% of pebbles fall within a marine environment and 22% within a fluvial environment, while the remaining 31% are uncertain. The sphericity-form ternary diagram plot shows that the pebbles primarily comprise bladed, platy, very bladed and very platy of near-equal proportions with minor elongate and very elongate stones, which suggests that the pebbles are diverse in origin. The sphericity-form bivariate plot indicates that the pebbles are largely of disc and blade shapes with a minor number of spherical and rod shapes. The near-equal proportion of pebbles in different segments of the bivariate and ternary diagram plots, and the wide distribution of the pebble grain sizes and shapes suggest the Ogwashi Formation is composed of redeposited sediments that likely were transported and deposited in a mix of marine and fluvial settings with possible transitional environments. In other words, the pebbles can be interpreted as marine-influenced fluvial sediments in marginal-marine settings.

Oceniono jakość wody i osadów dennych w kąpielisku Bałtyk-Adriatyk i zbiorniku Pacyfik, znajdujących się na terenie miasta Częstochowa, pod względem wybranych parametrów fizyczno-chemicznych. Stwierdzono na podstawie porównania z wymaganiami dla kategorii jakości wód powierzchniowych A1-A3, że wody w zbiornikach, poza zawartością OWO i stężeniem kadmu, spełniały wymagania dla najwyższej klasy A1 (w przypadku OWO dla klasy A2). Wody charakteryzowały się niskim stężeniem azotu (< 0,75 mg N/dm3) i jonów metali ciężkich: cynku, miedzi, niklu, ołowiu i kadmu (< 0,03 mg/dm3). Całkowitą zawartość metali ciężkich w osadach dennych analizowano według kryteriów geochemicznych. Stwierdzono, że osady w punktach poboru próbek były niezanieczyszczone cynkiem, miedzią, ołowiem, a miernie zanieczyszczone kadmem i niklem.
The chapter assesses the quality of water and bottom sediments in the Baltic-Adriatic bathing area and the Pacific reservoir are located in the city of Czestochowa, in terms of selected physicochemical parameters. It was found on the basis of a comparison with the requirements for the A1-A3 water quality category that the water in the reservoirs, except for the TOC content and cadmium concentration, met the requirements for the highest class A1 (in the case of OWO for class A2). The waters were characterized by a low concentration of nitrogen (< 0.75 mg N/dm3) and heavy metal ions: zinc, copper, nickel, lead and cadmium (< 0.03 mg/dm3). The total content of heavy metals in the bottom sediments was analyzed according to geochemical criteria. It was found that the sediments at the sampling points were not contaminated with zinc, copper, lead, and were moderately contaminated with cadmium and nickel.

In the geological structures containing crude oil and associated gases and located in areas where volcanic activity has been detected, radioactive substances and minerals are contained both in the structure of the reservoir waters and in the impurities related to the composition of the extracted crude oil. They are present during the extraction of crude oil and associated gases and affect human health and environmental safety. Radioactive elements have been detected in reservoir waters, in impurities associated with crude oil, and especially during the processing of drilling fluids (the separation of detritus sourced from geological strata from the used drilling fluid). Other radioactive elements were also detected in the areas polluted with oil and drilling waste. In order to determine the radioactivity level of crude oil originating from the area of volcanic activity of the Romanian Mountains, crude oil samples were collected from the oil field in a one-year analysis. The collected samples were analysed to determine their physical-chemical structure. The reservoir water associated with these samples and the minerals separated from the crude oil following their solvent extraction were also analysed. Radioactive elements were detected using X-ray spectrometry, and their chemical structures are also discussed.
W strukturach geologicznych zawierających ropę naftową i towarzyszący jej gaz ziemny oraz zlokalizowanych w obszarach, w których wykryto aktywność wulkaniczną, substancje i minerały radioaktywne zawarte są zarówno w strukturze wód złożowych, jak również w zanieczyszczeniach powiązanych ze składem wydobywanej ropy. Są one obecne podczas wydobycia ropy naftowej i towarzyszącego jej gazu, mając wpływ na zdrowie ludzkie i bezpieczeństwo środowiska. Pierwiastki radioaktywne wykryto nie tylko w wodach złożowych i związanych z nią zanieczyszczeniach, ale przede wszystkim podczas obróbki płuczek wiertniczych, w tym w procesie oddzielania detrytusu pochodzącego z warstw skalnych od zużytej płuczki wiertniczej. Inne pierwiastki radioaktywne wykryto także w obszarach zanieczyszczonych ropą i odpadami wiertniczymi. Dla określenia poziomu radioaktywności ropy naftowej pochodzącej z obszaru aktywności wulkanicznej w górach Rumunii, z jednego ze złóż ropnych w ciągu jednego roku pobrano próbki ropy naftowej do analiz. Pobrane próbki przeanalizowano pod kątem struktury fizykochemicznej. Przebadano także wodę złożową powiązaną z tymi próbkami oraz minerały oddzielone z ropy naftowej po ich ekstrakcji rozpuszczalnikiem. Pierwiastki radioaktywne zidentyfikowano za pomocą spektrometrii rentgenowskiej, omówiono również ich struktury chemiczne.

Obszar badanego torfowiska stanowi fragment kompleksu mokradeł zajmujących dno pradoliny warszawsko-berlińskiej w rejonie Łęczycy. Na specyfikę tej części pradoliny oraz torfowiska w Błoniu wpływa wododziałowe położenie, a także kłodawski wysad soli kamiennej wieku permskiego. Rozpoznane zostały miąższość i litologia utworów biogenicznych, a w wybranym profilu badawczym oznaczono ich parametry fizykochemiczne i wykonano datowania. Pozwoliło to na zrekonstruowanie najważniejszych faz rozwoju mokradła, odzwierciedlających naturalne i antropogeniczne zmiany warunków środowiska geograficznego, jakie panowały na obszarze pradoliny warszawsko-berlińskiej w odcinku między miejscowościami Łęczyca i Błonie.
The area of the studied peatland is a fragment of a complex of wetlands occupying the floor of the Warsaw-Berlin ice-marginal valley in the region of Łęczyca. The specificity of this part of the valley and the peatland in Błonie is influenced by the watershed location and the Kłodawa rock salt dome of the Permian age. The thickness and lithology of biogenic deposits were identified, and the physicochemical parameters of the sediments and their dating were determined in the selected research profile. This made it possible to reconstruct the most important phases of wetland development, reflecting the natural and anthropogenic changes in the conditions of the geographical environment that prevailed in the area of the Warsaw-Berlin ice-marginal valley in the section between Łęczyca and Błonie

An attempt was made to determine the correlation between the granulometric structure of bottom sediments and the content of speciation forms of phosphorus and selected metals. Using the sedimentation method, the bottom sediments of a thermally contaminated dam reservoir were divided into fast and slow-draining fractions. Measurements of granulometric composition were made, determining the volume proportions of sediment particles in the range of 0.1 m to 650 m. Particle share sizes were determined in the size range: 0.1–50 m (F1), 50–100 m (F2), 100–200 m (F3), 200–400 m. (F4). The study showed that the content of speciation forms of phosphorus and selected metals remains related to the granulometric structure of bottom sediments. The content of organic matter in sediments is determined by the proportion of the smallest particles, from 0.1 to 50 μm, at the same time these particles most strongly aff ect the reduction conditions of sediments. According to Gilford›s correlation thresholds, there was no correlation between the proportion of sediment particles with dimensions of 0.1–50 μm and the concentration of speciation forms of phosphorus. For particles with dimensions of 50–100 μm, the strongest correlation was observed for the concentration of the EP fraction and for the WDP fraction (r2 = 0.4048, r2 = 0.3636). A strong correlation between the size of sediment particles and the concentration of speciated forms of phosphorus was noted for particles with dimensions of 100–200 μm and 200–400 μm. The coeffi cient of determination was forAAP, EP, WDP and RDP, respectively: 0.8292, 0.891, 0.7934, 0.47. The relationship between particles in the 0.1–50 m range and iron (Fe) concentration, R2 – 0.3792, aluminum (Al) R– 0.3208, and zinc (Zn) R2 – 0.4608, was classifi ed as medium. For particles in the 50–100 m range, a medium correlation with calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) concentrations is apparent, R2 0.4443 and 0.3818, respectively. For particles 100–200 mm and 200–400 mm, an almost full correlation is noted for iron (Fe) R2 – 0.9835, aluminum (Al) R2 – 0.9878, calcium (Ca) R2 – 0. 824, very strong for manganese (Mn) R2 – 0.6817, and zinc (Zn) R2 – 0.7343. There is a very strong correlation between the concentration of the AAP fraction with the concentration of iron (Fe) R2 – 0.8694 and a strong correlation between the concentration of EP with the concentration of iron (Fe) R2 – 0.609. There is a strong correlation between the concentration of theAAP and EP fractions with the concentration of aluminum (Al) R2 – 0. 6253 and 0.8327. The concentration of AAP and EP fractions with the concentration of calcium (Ca) R2 – 0.5941 and 0.7576 remains in a strong relationship. The correlation between the concentration of RDP fractions and the concentration of magnesium (Mg) and manganese (Mn) remains in a medium relationship. The concentration of the EP fraction (Olsen-P) is in a strong relationship with the concentration of organic matter (R2 –.0.6763). No correlation was found between the concentration of the residuum form and the concentrations of organic matter, iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al).A medium correlation was found between the concentration of the residuum form and the concentration of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn) – R2 = 0.4206 and zinc (Zn).

The article presents the results of research from the Mokrzeszów site in the Sudetic Foreland. Lithopetrographic and sedimentological analyses of sediments from the Middle Polish Glaciations (Early Saalian, Odranian, MIS6) in this area indicate the overrepresentation (90–95%) of large Scandinavian erratics. The deposits, representing a repetitive sequence of Gp-Gms-Sp-Sh/Sr(Dmm) lithofacies, accumulated during at least two episodes of glacial outburst floods and six sedimentary cycles. High-energy flows are estimated for the Gms and Gp facies at about 5 m∙s−1 and low-energy flows indicate 0.8 m∙s−1 for the Sp/Sh/Sr facies, to the lack of flow (Fm). The sedimentary sequences confirm the existence of a fan, which may have originated as a subaqueous steep coarse-grained fan in glacial-flow-lake-outburst floods that formed between the ice sheet front and the morphotectonic edge of the Sudetic Marginal Fault line and within the Roztoka-Mokrzeszów Graben, or as an aerial, piedmont fan on the Sudetic Marginal Fault edge. The sediments show discontinuous deformations – gently sloping faults and fractures from glacioisostatic stresses. The fault activity is probably related to the reactivation of the faults due to ice loading during or after the older Saalian glaciation.

Opis:
An isolated limestone hill (Cisowa Skała), located in the Podhale Basin in southern Poland, has yielded mollusc shells and small vertebrate bones in deposits filling small karst forms such as rock shelters, characteristic molluscan assemblages can be identified, the succession of which reflects changes in the environment and also microhabitat variations depending on local factors, such as slope exposure and type of vegetation. These local factors markedly affect regional environmental trends determined primarily by climate change and, during the last several hundred years, also by human activity. Such malacological analysis enables effective palaeogeographical reconstructions, both on the scale of geographical regions and for microhabitats.

Opis:
The most common means to analyze redox gradients in sediments is by push/pulling electrochemical probes through sediment’ strata while repeating measurements. Yet, as electrodes move up and down they disrupt the texture of the sediment layers thus biasing subsequent measurements. This makes it difficult to obtain reproducible measurements or to study the evolution of electrochemical gradients. One solution for solving this problem is to eliminate actuators and electrode movements altogether, while instead deploying probes with numerous electrodes positioned at various depths in the sediment. This mode of operation requires electrode switching. We discuss an electrode-switching solution for multi-electrode probes, based on Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) multiplexors. In this solution, electrodes can be individually activated in any order, sequence or time frame through digital software commands. We discuss constraints of CMOS-based multilayer electrochemical probes during cyclic voltammetry.

The purpose of the study presented in the article is to implement modern hydrographic characteristics of freshwater of the Shatsk Lakes (28 lakes in Volyn Polissya, Ukraine) by typing water bodies according to the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive, assessment of the chemical composition of lake water and bottom sediments (sapropel), determination of the opportunity for their recreational use in the special status of the district as a national park. Despite the presence of the two large lakes (Svityaz - 26.2 km2 and Pulemetske - 15.5 km2), very small lakes with a water surface area of less than 0.5 km2 (64%) are dominating in the Shatsk group. Mineralisation of calcium-hydrocarbonate lake waters is 115-303 mg∙dm-3 and calcium-sulphate aqueous extract of sapropel is - 318-1451 mg∙dm-3. Using a Piper diagram, it was found that there is genetic homogeneity between surface and groundwater, indicating a significant share of groundwater in the water supply of lakes. There are eight species of sapropel deposits in 19 lakes of the district. A wide range of chemical composition and physical and mechanical properties of sapropel deposits of the Shatsk Lakes allow us to consider them as an important resource for agriculture and industry. We found that sapropel from Shatsk Lakes meets the requirements for therapeutic mud and can be used for therapeutic and health purposes.

In the Central Caucasus region, the intense process of deglaciation is identified as caused by cryoconite formation and accumulation. The fine earth materials were collected on the surfaces of Skhelda and Garabashi glaciers as well as from zonal soils of Baksan Gorge and were studied in terms of chemical, particle-size, and micromorpholo-gical features. Supraglacial sediments are located at the glacial drift area of material and, thus, due to transfer of these sediments to the foothill area, their fine earth material can affect micromorphological and chemical characteristics of adjacent zonal soils. Thin sections of mineral and organo-mineral micromonoliths were analyzed by classic micromorphological methods. Data obtained showed that the weathering rates of cryoconite and soil minerals are different. The cryoconite material on the debris-covered Skhelda Glacier originated from local massive crystalline rocks and moraines, while for Garabashi Glacier the volcanic origin of cryoconite is more typical. Soils of Baksan Gorge are characterized by more developed microfabric and porous media, but their mineralogical composition is essentially inherited from sediments of glacial and periglacial soils. These new data could be useful for understanding the process of evolution of the mineral matrix of cryoconite to the soil matrix formed at the foot of the mountain.

Marine sediments with rapid oxic/anoxic transitions are difficult to monitor in real time. Organic overload that may lead to anoxia and buildup of hydrogen sulfide can be caused by a variety of factors such as sewage spills, harbor water stagnation, algal blooms and the vicinity of aquaculture operations. We have tested a novel multiprobe technology (named SPEAR) on marine sediments to evaluate its performance in monitoring sediments and overlaying water. Our results show the ability of the SPEAR probes to distinguish electrochemical changes at 2-3 mm scale and at hourly cycles. SPEAR probes have the ability to identify redox interfaces and redox transition zones in sediments, but do not use micromanipulators (which are cumbersome in field and underwater applications). We propose that the best target habitats for SPEAR-type monitoring are rapidly evolving muddy deposits and sediments near aquaculture operations where pollution with organics stresses the ecosystem.
