Opis:
The aim of this study is to present the fate of Polish Olympians representing their coun try during the Olympic Games as well as their huge contribution and ezorts for the res-- toration of Polish independence. First of all, the article discusses the direct participation of the future squad members in a struggle for boundaries of a second Polish republic in years 1914–1921 as well as their contribution in a movement against German invaders in years 1939–1945. The goal of this paper is also to present the fates of some pre-war sport ambassadors aer Poland’s regaining independence with the help of Soviets. Described here is the Soviet attitude towards the athletes involved in Polish Underground Movement who were recognized by the communistic government as potentially dangerous. The fate of this small group of Olympians is similar to the fate of millions of Poles during the wartime. It was a common feature for almost all of them to be a part of Polish-German War in 1939, the Warsaw Uprising; they were sent to concentration or war camps, and took part in liberating the country in the last phase of the war. During the war many of them shown bravery and sacrice for which they were awarded combat distinctions. The memory of Polish heroes and their contribution for the country is still rooted in the nation. ey gave happiness for the citizens on sport arenas but at the same time, when the freedom was threatened, they fullled their civil duty.

Opis:
The Second World War and the anticipated victory over the Third Reich, together with the significant weakening of the USSR, became in Poland the reason for developing various new geopolitical concepts and plans for reshaping Poland’s previous borders. The menace of a new aggression from both of Poland’s powerful neighbours in the process to rebuild their previous positions of power brought forward the idea of a federation of middle-Eastern Europe countries (the so-called „Intermarium”) and a future creation of a sufficient barrier against possible aggressors. In Poland these issues were broadly discussed by the nationalistic fractions such as the National Party, the Confederation of the Nation, the Szaniec Group and the „Fatherland” Organisation. The latter two were especially productive in this area. There was a general agreement in the nationalist movement regarding the necessity to move Poland’s borders to the lower Oder and the Lusatian Neisse. Some concepts reached even further, planning the creation of a Lusatian Coutry or indeed the reslavisation of Mecklenburg. Especially active in this regard was Professor Karol Stojanowski, the leader of the People’s National Military Organisation and the author of brochures propagating ideas such as „The West Slavic Country” and „The Reslavisation of Eastern Germany”. A very interesting concept of the „Great Nation” was presented by an endecian ideologist Adam Doboszyński in a brochure of the same title, in which Doboszyński propagated not only the federation of the „Intermarium” countries, but also predicted a gradual merging of these nations into a single „Great Nation” and even the eventual development of a common language.

Opis:
The last day of Nazi German occupation of Siedlce started a new chapter in the life of the local community. Being destroyed in 75 percent, the town was far from its former status of an important regional centre of administration and education. As a result of military actions many buildings and schools were burned or destroyed. The local power plant and waterworks were damaged. The scale of damages and nonfunctioning of , numerous, basic town facilities made the living situation of local citizens very complicated and hard to resolve. By describing the extent of damages, the tries to show the conditions in which the local community had to live and how difficult it was to recover after the military actions during the Second World War, including the battle of 1944. The violent political changes, which occurred after the Red Army’s appearance, formed the background to rebuilding of the town and social recovery. Despite the propaganda and brutal political struggle, the imposed local government was considered „foreign” by the majority of citizens. Having sketched the grim post-war situation of Siedlce’s residents, the author analyzes the causes of anxieties and later hostile attitude of the local society towards the new administration built on the principles set by Polish Committee of National Liberation, whose operations changed the social landscape for the worse.

Opis:
The article focuses on Andrew J. Borkowski’s collection of short-stories Copernicus Avenue published in 2011 and awarded the 2012 Toronto Book Award. Written by the son of a Polish war veteran, Copernicus Avenue shows how deeply the trauma of the Second World War has affected the Polish diaspora in Canada. The article begins with an analysis of the stories located in Poland, illustrating the ambivalent moral choices of the protagonists during the war. The traumatic memories of war haunt the protagonists in their New World homes and influence the lives of their descendants as well. On the example of three characters, I illustrate the different approaches to diaspora and homeland in the Polish post-war community in Toronto. I also trace the complex itineraries of the characters, showing that the concept of roots shapes their identity as much as the complicated routes of migrations. As a result, the Polish diaspora in Copernicus Avenue appears a heterogeneous space of community and antagonism, solidarity and exclusion.

Poland and Polish nationalism are widely identified with Catholicism. However, the population of the Polish state was not homogenous ethnically and religiously – in 1921 the number of ethnic/confessional minorities reached the high level of over 30 percent. The Second World War was a fundamental change in Polish history – the new people’s republic, formed after 1945, has been a totally different state from the Second Republic of Poland, which existed 1918–1939. Unfortunately, very little is known about the impact of Churches (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) in shaping the Polish, Ukrainian, Belorussian and German nationalisms during the wartime as well as the attitudes of clergymen towards the German occupants.

The Confederation of the Nation, the ideological continuation of the National Radical Camp Falanga during the Second World War, created a concept for the post-war order in Central Europe which would be guaranteed by a new geo-political construct – the Slavic Empire – with borders defined by the three seas: the Baltic, the Black and the Adriatic. Poland, with its Western borders significantly expanded compared to the pre-war period and in union with Lithuania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, would take the lead of the proposed block. Despite the name of the proposed supernation, the Baltic countries as well as Romania and Hungary were welcome to participate in shaping the new future. The Confederates did not see any other option for either Poland or any other countries of the Intermarium. The leader of the Confederation of the Nation Bolesław Piasecki wrote: „No other choice remains, as either we, as the culturally paramount nation among the Slavs, take up and implement the idea of designing the geo-political Slavic bloc, or the Poles and all Slavs fall into a civilizational abyss, becoming slaves to foreign forces and their own unawareness. (…) If our iron will is lacking, it is easy to imagine Europe without Poland and the rest of Slavs as actors of history”.

Melchior Wańkowicz in reportages on Russia is about two non-fiction reportages about Russia: one written before the Second World War called Opierzona rewolucja and the other written during the war called Dzieje rodziny Korzeniewskich. There are two different, ambivalent views on communist system. The first one seems to be apologetic and appreciative for this, in writer's opinion, successful country and its people after communist revolution. Dzieje rodziny Korzeniewskich written in 1942, edited in English in New York in 1945 was one of the world's first non-fiction reportages which gives a report from Russian communist crime on Polish society exiled on northern and southern parts of Russia during the Second World War.

The experience of reading the reports produced by various departments of the Lodz town government in the times of the Nazi occupation gives us a unique opportunity to become acquainted with the functioning of the fascist bureaucracy. There is much we can learn there about the work of the office in question and the lives of its officials in a broader context of the effectiveness of their activity. It transpires, for example, very clearly that no legal equality existed between the Germans and the Jews. This is corroborated by the fact that, in the rare cases of municipal claims against the Jews in the Lodz ghetto, those claims were upheld and enforced very meticulously.

This is the case with Central Europe, which forms a sort of transnational melting pot and which has hosted the Hebrew Diaspora. The theme of the Diaspora plays a key role in many of Magris books, in particular Lontano da dove. In his recent novel, Non luogo a procedere, one of the topics is the slave trade, a sort of African Diaspora.

I just want to make an introductory note: I - like Marcin Kula in his book on the 'Stubborn question. Jewish? Polish? Humane?' - am very well aware of the fact that the definitions 'Jew' and 'Christian' are not satisfactory. But as Gebirtig was a Pole and at the same time a traditionally raised and educated religious Jew, I decided to use this terminology in this article, which deals with Polish-Jewish relations before the Second World War and includes the relations with the Germans after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. As far as I can see, the topic of the relations between Jews and Christians has now shifted into the centre of academic interest in Poland, judging by the significant number of books and articles published on the subject. These relations, having, as I mentioned, also included the Germans, thus created a triangle full of tensions which are also a topic of research and discussion within the Polish literature of the last twenty years.

General Francisco Franco established his dictatorship in Spain in 1939 after winning the Civil War fought against the democratic Republican government. The same year, the Second World War broke out. The Caudillo wanted his country to remain neutral, but Spain soon moved forward to the status of non-belligerence: Franco backed Mussolini and Hitler on the level of propaganda, and he also sent voluntary troops to help the Germans, although he also maintained relations with the Allies. Later, the country returned to the status of neutrality. The aim of my article is to highlight the main features of the Spanish attitude and the government’s diplomatic maneuvers between the Axis powers and the Allies, paying special attention to Franco’s possibilities and doubts.

The article deals with various forms and strategies of remembering the past. Krockow’s book, which is an important voice in German discourse on remembering the lost motherland, belongs to the current of non-fiction and the literature of memory. The author deliberately mixes styles and genres: a loose tale about the olden days, a historical essay, family history, personal recollections and an account of a journey. The description of Pomerania as a littleknown province of the former German East, presented from the historical and sociological perspective, is far from nostalgic as it offers a critical look at the most recent history of Germany. The reconstruction of the history of the region as well as the mentality of its inhabitants constitutes the author’s personal method of coming to terms with the German ideology which led to the Second World War, expulsion and the loss of the motherland.

After collapse of metropolitan France in June 1940, the French in the Syria and Lebanon swore allegiance to the Vichy Government. This situation was hard to accept by the British. According to the Chiefs of Staff Committee, the occupation of these territories by enemy forces could have had most serious strategic consequences since it would cut of land communications with Turkey and would immediately threaten the whole of British interests in the Middle East. Due to that threat, London was forced to rethink its policy towards French Levant. One of the discussed measures was a proposition to involve Turkey in solving this problem. Turkey was bound with Britain with reciprocal security pact since October 1939. Moreover, the situation in Syria and Lebanon was also a threat for Turkish security. It was thought that these arguments would act in favor of Turkish involvement. Although in London everyone counted on active attitude of Turkey, there was no agreement as to its nature. While Churchill, Eden and the Chiefs of Staff were willing to agree on Turkish occupation of Syria and Lebanon, the Foreign Office was definitely against this solution. The first option eventually won. The first serious talks about Turkish involvement in Levant question took place in Ankara in January 1941, during the Anglo-Turkish military conversations. It was agreed then that if Turkey had entered the war, Turkish and British armies would have occupied Syria and Lebanon. The deteriorating military situation on the Eastern Mediterranean forced the United Kingdom to intervene in the French Levant in June 1941. Th e British government encouraged Turks to take part in that operation (“Exporter”). However, Turkish government rejected that offer. Turkey was still out of war and did not want to worsen her relations with the Third Reich.

The article presents the activity of the Sisters of St Catherine, Virgin and Marty in Pieniężno (Mehlsack) in the years 1856–1876 and 1889–1945. In 1856 three sisters of St Catherine in Braniewo took up educational activity at the Catholic elementary school for girls in Pieniężno (Mehlsack). On 9 September, 1856 a contract of employment was signed between the Town Council of Pieniężno and the Order of St Catherine in Braniewo represented by Mother Apolonia Stuhrmann, Superior General. The Presbyter Marquard of Frombork participated in the event. In 1870 the sisters were additionally entrusted with teaching younger classes at a school attended by boys and girls. The number of sisters increased to five then. On 13 May, 1876, at the time of the Kulturkamph, the sisters were removed from the Pieniężno schools. Secular staff were appointed to fill their positions. Then the sisters returned to their convent in Braniewo. After 13 years, on 7 January, 1889 the sisters of St Catherine returned to Pieniężno to take up the job of nursing at St George’s Hospital. Soon the number of halls and the space for patients proved to be insufficient. A plot adjacent to the hospital was purchased and within the years 1912–1913 a larger, modern 50-bed hospital was built with collected money. It was fitted with the most modern equipment. There was also a chapel. In 1929 a twenty-bed paedriatric department for sick children and infants was opened in the hospital. The hospital was the property of the Catholic parish. It was subordinate to the department of education under the management of consecutive deans. Medical service was fulfilled by one of the physicians who practised in the town; nursing was done by the sisters of the Order of St Catherine. In 1930 six sisters worked there. During World War II (1939) a part of the hospital functioned as field hospital. Because of enormous amount of work the number of sisters increased to ten. On 11 February 1945 when the war front reached Orneta and military operations were nearing Pieniężno the last wounded patients were sent to field hospitals in the north of the country. The sisters had to leave the hospital too. On the night of 12/13 February they left Pieniężno.

The article explores the dynamics of the formation of the image of Belorussia on the German mental map with a consideration of the German occupation policies during the First and Second World Wars. The author suggests that in 1915–18 the Germans tried to “invent” Belorussia in order to overcome the lack of knowledge about this region and, on the other hand strove to gain this “new land” and its population to ensure their own superiority in the East. It seems that the Kaiserreich was indeed tolerant to the profound cultural differences and sought to make use of the local regionalism in geopolitical sense. On the contrary, in the Nazi Germany the cultural differences were initially rejected in favor of the “master race”. In this respect, Belarusians were considered only as a mean to support of the forthcoming colonization. In the author’s opinion, there is much less continuity between the German war policies in the East in 1915−18 and 1941−44 than is generally accepted.

Second World War, Albanian-Yugoslav relations, Kosovo, Republic of Serbia
Opis:
Kosovo and Albanian-Yugoslav relations in the period of 1944–1948 The period of the first four years after the end of the Second World War was one of a few examples of cooperation in Albanian-Yugoslav relations. It was one a of a few times when these relations were based not only on ideological similarities but on pragmatic grounds as well. This pragmatic outlook is quite specific for the attitude assumed towards the problem of Kosovo. The abandoning of the concept of Greater Albania propagated in 1941–1944 by the occupation authorities and the incorporation of Kosovo into the Republic of Serbia (within the Yugoslav Federation) aroused resentment among a number of Albanian population living in Kosovo. For the new elite ruling in Tirana cooperation with Belgrade became such an important factor in the process of stabilisation of the state and of the new system that the problem of Kosovo was treated as an internal Yugoslav issue. When in 1948 Yugoslavia was expelled from Cominform, Albanians made the most of this opportunity and freed themselves from under the rule of their northern neighbour. This put an end to the process of unification of the two states. The events of 1948 limited, for quite some time, migration from Albania to Kosovo making the Albanians living in Kosovo „hostages” in Albanian-Yugoslav relations. For Albanian historians, especially those who wrote their works in the period between 1992 and 1997, this short-term Albanian-Yugoslav cooperation resulted in the stigmatisation of a number of people who were labelled traitors of the Albanian nation as they expressed loyalty towards communism joined with a servile attitude towards Belgrade. Serbians pointed to the experiences of 1944-1948 as an example of possible reconciliation between the two states for which the problem of Kosovo was not a destructive issue

Opis:
A major problem of the diocese of Lublin during the Second World War was the replenishment of its clergy. In the initial period of the war, Lublin Seminary remained closed. Its bishops were arrested and deported from Lublin. In these circumstances, it was necessary to use some extraordinary efforts to continue the formation of seminarians and lead them to ordination. Right after the Germans entered Lublin in September 1939, the Lublin Auxiliary Bishop, Władysław Goral, still succeeded in ordaining a few seminarians in the seminary church. Then, in 1940, the auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Pinsk, Karol Niemira, arrived in Lublin and ordained a large group of seminarians. In 1941, one seminarian was ordained in Vilnius. Some regularity in ordination returned in the years 1941-1944, when the Germans allowed the Lublin Seminary to reopen. The seminarians had to travel in small groups to Nowy Sącz, though, where the bishop of the diocese of Lublin, Marian Leon Fulman, was interned. They were secretly ordained by him in the private chapel of the rectory. Shortly after he returned to Lublin, but before the war was ended in 1945, Bishop Fulman ordained another seminarian in his bishop's chapel. In total, during the Second World War, fifty-eight new priests were ordained for the diocese of Lublin.

This paper discusses the results of the research carried out in a project entitled An archaeology of the Death Valley. First, the historical context related to mass killings on the outskirts of Chojnice during the Second World War is sketched. Then, the results of the archaeological field research are presented. The last part is about ethnographic research which allowed to document various memories related to mass killings in the Death Valley as well as human and non-human witnesses of these events. The idea behind this paper is to show that archaeology and ethnography are crucial in discovering and documenting sites of mass killings and their heritage.

Opis:
Initial discussions on the project of creating the Polish University Abroad were held as early as September 1939 in Switzerland. Decision was made to establish such an entity in Paris, with its headquarters at the Polish Library. Even before its inauguration, the University had been gathering information about Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors from the Polish universities, who managed to escape from occupied Poland, as well as those ones remaining in Poland. A list of 150 names of Professors and Associate Professors and about 80 Assistant Professors was created. In that academic year about 80 Professors and Associate Professors and 60 Assistant Professors from the Polish universities were in France. Documents le¡ by them show today all goals and tasks, of which present Polish University Abroad in London is the successor. e historical continuity of the university exists on three levels: sta, ideas and structure. Summarising and emphasising the words quoted by the Rector: „e founders of the Parisian university, who participated in further formation of PUNO in 1947, led their research and teaching activities both in Paris and then in London”. The ideological goals and ethos of the Polish University Abroad in Paris were closely related to the educational mission, which is even now: to represent all Polish universities and to maintain the continuity of the Polish higher education in the world. A¡er the Second World War it allowed Polish soldiers, their families, refugees and emigrants to continue or commence higher education in Polish outside of Poland as well as to develop scientific research and publish the results worldwide. PUNO mission now is to serve all generations of Poles who, outside their mother country or the land of their forebears, wish to continue their academic studies, broaden their knowledge of the contemporary world and maintain contact with Polish science and culture. The University’s aim is also to promote Polish science and culture in the UK and even further – worldwide, thanks to participation in global research projects. The Polish University Abroad in Paris had the Humanities, the Legal and the Economic Department. The first department established at the Polish University Abroad in London was the Humanities Department, followed by the Legal and the Economic ones. The Humanities Department was a leading department in Paris and remained such at the Polish University Abroad in London.

In his critically acclaimed work of non-fiction, Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad (2015), American children’s author M.T. Anderson uses the conventions of YA dystopian fiction in order to demonstrate how both the Stalinist Terror and the Nazi Siege of Leningrad profoundly affected the life and work of the renowned Soviet composer, Dmitri Shostakovich. By offering his young audience what he has called a “dystopian novel that happens to be true”, Anderson not only challenges readers to consider the relationship between history and dystopia, but also prompts them to think critically about utopian ideals and their potentially dystopic consequences as well as about the vexed relationship between the individual and the collective. Ultimately, Symphony for the City of the Dead places into new relief the central concerns of Anderson’s earlier, and much celebrated, YA dystopian novel, Feed (2002), insofar as it calls millennial readers – named the “historical generation” by historian and activist Timothy Snyder – to be mindful of the culturally- and historically-contingent character of contemporary political crises.

Gerold Tietz was born in 1941 in Horka (north Bohemia) in a family of Sudeten Germans. Germans lived in this village together with Czechs, Roma people and Jews. The family also involved Czech relatives and many of German relatives spoke good Czech and kept relations with Czech cultural groups. After the war Gerold Tietz and his family were expelled to Swabia. He studied history, French and political science. From 1969 the graduated historian lived in Esslingen where he taught in the grammar school for thirty years. In the autobiographically oriented novels Böhmische Fuge (1997), Böhmisches Richtfest (2007) and in Böhmische Grätschen (2009) Tietz tried to depict official social-political events connected with famous political and cultural figures as well as the stories of ordinary days of “small people” who had to face the consequences of historic changes which influenced their lives. The paper analyses the conditions of Czech and German coexistence and confronts the authentic historic context. Nevertheless, negative features of these ethnic groups are not overlooked and the positive ones are presented as a positive contribution to the current European multiculturalism.

The personnel of the Danish mission, as most members of the diplomatic corps accredited by the Polish government, left Warsaw hastily in September 1939. Prior to the departure, the diplomats destroyed some of the political reports, but many things belonging to the employees of the Danish mission were left behind. Despite the military activity, the Danes considered sending their representative to Poland; his duty would be to take care of Danish citizens in Poland and Danish property. That is why they took advantage of the offer to send representatives of the neutral states to Warsaw, as presented by the German government in October 1939. During a short stay in Warsaw the Danish delegation visited the flats of Danish citizens, the seat of the Danish mission and the factory belonging to the Højgaard&Schultz company. They brought 16 boxes back to Denmark containing the personal belongings of the envoy and other employees. The German proposal appeared immediately after the Western states had rejected the peace offer. The aim of organising the journey of diplomats in the diplomatic train was to convince the governments of the neutral states to start mediations between the fighting parties and to win the support of the neutral states.

The above-mentioned activities cannot be reduced to one formula or a specific species. In these conditions, the artistic level and innovation of many performances amaze. Paradoxically, this most dramatic theater achieved its greatest autonomy during the occupation. It has become a useful tool for restoring human dignity and art.

Based on biographical interviews coming from different collections of the Oral History Archives of the KARTA Center Foundation and the History Meeting House, the text highlights three main elements of biographical experience which make the narrations of Poles from Galicia different from those of their Ukrainian and Jewish neighbors.  These were: the Red Army entering the Eastern Borderlands and Soviet repressions, the Polish-Ukrainian conflict, and departure from the Eastern Borderlands. For most speakers the following topics constitute the base of their identification with a national group understood as the community of remembrance. The text shows the difference between memories of people who stayed in the Ukraine after 1945 and those who left the Eastern Borderlands – “repatriates”. It also analyzes dependencies between individual and social memory and the influence of different cultures of memory on shaping biographical narration.

World War II – a Thirty Years War or a War of Three Generations The chronology of historical events may appear to be simple. There is a specific event and there is a date on which it occurred. However, an essential problem remains: what is the event and what terms shall we use to describe it? Will these terms be unambiguous? We ask: when did the Second World War begin and end? However, perhaps one should ask: why is it recognized as a world war? In Poland, it is assumed that the war began on 1 September 1939. However, for the first two days it was a conflict between two states only – Germany and Poland. Other participants of the events in Europe would join in later. Why do we call it a ‘world war’ then? Because there was another area of great struggle: the Far East, extended around the Pacific, Oceania, as far as the coasts of Australia. There is a problem here, however. The war in Asia began with Japan’ s attack on China on 7 July 1937. If we are of the opinion that the beginning of the world war is the German-Polish conflict, there are, in fact, no arguments for not moving the initial date more than two years earlier. The world war, which began with the Asian events of 1937, moved to Europe in 1939. And when did World War II end? However, the direct chronology of the conflict is only one part of the problem. To what extent was the war a separate chapter in history? Perhaps it was one of the processes which began much earlier and ended much later? There are supporters of the view of a certain thirty years war, from 1914 to 1945. Others are convinced of a war of a period of three generations, from 1914 to 1989 or 1990. Aspects under discussion involve the development of science and technology serving conflicts, a questioning of euro-centrism and the determination of the United States’ leadership in the Western block, as well as decolonization. History may be approached in various ways. The outcomes will depend on the assumptions made. This makes finding unambiguous answers difficult, but it also makes historical inquiries attractive.

The article features a comparison of two very different collections of stories. What binds these narrations is the way they present the influence of totalitarian regimes on children’s lives. Children of Zion is a set of documents selected by Henryk Grynberg concerning the fate of Jewish children evacuated from the USSR to Palestine by general Władysław Anders. Children of the Gulag is a co-operative work by Cathy Frierson and Semyon S. Vilensky. They used source documents archived by the Memorial Association (Общество Мемориал) and Return (Возвращение), a historical-literary society which was established by Wileński himself. In the article the author aimed to present the main differences between the two totalitarian systems and how the systems caused dehumanization of childhood by means of exhausting labor, starvation, separation from parents and murder. What is more, the article contains a comparison of different attitudes towards the method of presenting historical facts and individual experiences. Hence, the scope of the work lies within discourse of representation / representation discourse.

For that, we resort to the narratives of an immigrant of Polish origin, whose personal trajectory was irreversibly marked by the experience of compulsory recruitment, in the context of the Second World War.The recording of her life story resulted from a long interview conducted from the methodology of oral history, in which she provides important elements to reflect on the potential of autobiographical narratives in the exercise of reconstructing the past, whose images and representations emerge, always mediated for the interactive and inseparable relationship with the present time, in the dialectical movement between history and memory, remembrance and forgetfulness, silence and narrativity, saying and meaning.

Norwegian-British tonnage agreement from 11th November 1939
Opis:
On the outbreak of the Second World War, Norway’s merchant marine was the fourth largest in the world with its gross register tonnage of 4,8 million. It played substantial role in the state economy as it generated more than one third of the national income in the balance of payments. Yet, the conflict put the Norwegian sea transport in a difficult situation as it dependent on the two warring nations, i.e. Great Britainand Hitler’s Third Reich. To make matters worse, any case of tipping the balance by the Norwegian fleet in a favour of any of the two belligerents might lead to the suspicion that Norwayhad departed from the policy of neutrality. Aware of its perplexing situation, the Norwegian government issued the Provisional decree on the regulation of the conditions of charter during the war, which effectively strengthened its control of the national merchant marine, thus laying sound foundation for a tonnage agreement withGreat Britain which was eventually signed on November 1939. On the strength of this agreement,Norway placed 150 tankers at the disposal of the allies and paved the way for further agreements of this kind.

Judiciary during the Second World War and occupation of the Polish territories by the Third German Reich still need comprehensive studies. Overall opinion on the publications issued in recent years is positive, even optimistic. It needs to be emphasized that these works are published not only by the experienced researches but also by young researches at the beginning of their scientific careers. All of the works mentioned in this publication were based on good archival sources. The state of our knowledge about the judiciary during the Second World War and the occupation of Polish lands by the Third German Reich has been significantly expanded and deepened. Another reason for optimism is announcements of new monographs and source studies.

This article analyses the differences and similarities between documentation centres active in the aftermath of the Holocaust both in France and in Poland. While in Poland the task was from 1945 assigned to the Central Jewish Historical Commission, in France, the Center of Contemporary Jewish Documentation quickly overtook the lead on other minor centres established by Communist Jews or Bundists. The paper focuses on the links between those institutions, through contacts between members, exchanges of documentation, and parallel publications and exhibits. It shows that despite quite different political conditions, men and women working in these institutions shared a similar vision of transmission of history and memory of the Holocaust. They managed to implement their vision pa 19.03.2019 rtly thanks to their transnational links that helped transcend political and material difficulties.

In 2015, as a result of implementing the Ukrainian decommunisation laws, the official name of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War was changed to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. The current exhibition at the museum depicts internalisation of Soviet myths in Ukraine as well as the problem of no explicit guidelines from state authorities regarding an official narrative. Also, developing a new concept of a museum dedicated to the history of Ukraine in the Second World War has been impeded by the ongoing war in the eastern part of the country. This paper discusses mutual relations and mismatches between Ukraine’s politics of history and museum practices. The change of the latter is much more languid and complex than in the case of merely changing street names or dismantling old monuments and erecting new ones.

In years 1944–1945, more than 1.400 girls and young women from the Polish city of Łódź were displaced to Ulm in Germany and forced to work there. During their stay, the girls had to endure severe living conditions, and were exposed to diseases. Through deprivation and exploitation, forced laborers for Telefunken were condemned to daily suffering. Such a system of exploitation was symptomatic for the late phase of the war, during which efforts towards increasing war production came at the cost of sacrificing the health of foreign workers. The goal of this paper is a historical reappraisal of their experiences, with special attention paid to the medical care that they received. We present the extent of the medical treatment provided for the laborers, the aim of which was only the restoration of their further ability to work.

Opis:
The fate of the Hungarian 2nd Army has a significant role in the Hungarian memory. The army was sent to the Eastern Front in 1942 suffered one of the great defeats of the Hungarian military history during the Soviet counter-offensive in January 1943. During the past almost 80 years, different narratives have emerged about it were evolved in the Hungarian public. In the paper the author shall analyse the most significant elements of these narratives. Firstly, there will be examined the genesis and underlying causes of the decision to send the 2nd Army to the Eastern front. The author counter a popular post-war myth that the Hungarian leadership sent out the Hungarian soldiers and labour servicemen with the intention of sacrifice that it could limit Hungary's involvement in the German war effort. Although the Hungarian military leadership discriminated against various social groups (primarily of individuals of Jewish descent, non-Hungarian nationalities) in military service, they did not aim to destroy them. Similarly, the higher proportion of reserve officers and lower social classes (peasantry, workpeople) in the army was misinterpreted. In the second part of the paper the author will examine the interpretations of the defeat in January 1943. As a part of this topic there will be shown how the public opinion and survivors overstated the loss data and the temperature conditions of “the Russian winter.” In addition, the author scrutinize the fighting and withdrawal in January 1943 from the viewpoint of the military discipline. Finally, he analyse the interpretations of two orders. The army commander, Colonel General Jány wrote in his order on 24 January that “the 2nd Army has lost its honour.” Although later he withdrew this order, it became the symbol of the barbarity and betrayal of the Hungarian military elite against the Hungarian soldiers. It received a different opinion on the order of the commander of the III Corps of 1 February 1943, in which Major General Stomm disbanded his formation - which was unprecedented in Hungarian history.

Opis:
The origins of aerial photography can be traced back to the second half of the 19th century, and periods of World Wars contributed to the development of techniques for developing and disseminating aerial photographs for military purposes. In the literature, we find descriptions of the Polish Military Geographical Institute's (WIG) use of aerial photography to update topographic maps of nearly 40% of the country's area at the time. Unfortunately, the fate of the pre-war collection of photographs is dificult to establish. Given this, the aerial photographs from the period of the Second World War (German and Allied) constitute the oldest possible complete and consistent photographic documentation of Poland. The series of German prints (373-GXPRINTS) collected at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park (NARA, USA) are maintained according to the most liberal policy on access and further use. At the same time, the organisation of the NARA archive and the extent to which the collection has been digitised (over one million images) leave a deficiency, and searching for images requires knowledge, methods and experience. In 2020-2021, the Department of Geomatics and Cartography of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University implemented the project Development of the Ortophotomap of Lublin 1939-1945 (NCN, Miniatura 4.0. No. 2020/04/X/HS4/00382). The result of the project is a dedicated web portal https://ortolub.umcs.pl, consisting of a digital repository of aerial images, a map application and standardised GIS raster data services. The author believes this is a unique source base, with unprecedented detail. The publication of the project results under the Creative Commons CC-BY-SA 4.0 licence is intended to foster the widest possible use of wartime aerial images in scientific research and popularisation activities. The process of developing a historical orthophotomap, as presented in the article, is universal and can be repeated on any set of aerial photographs. At the same time, development work is needed to automate the operations as fully as possible. In conclusion, current challenges and prospects for the development of historical orthophotomaps of national coverage are indicated.

This essay is inspired by a close reading of the recently published volume Żołnierze ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Historie mówione (Soldiers of the Polish people’s Army. Oral histories) by Jarosław Pałka and Kaja Kaźmierska (Łódź, 2018) and continuously refers to it. Rather than a standard book review, it is a critical essay which positions this publication, and the documentation project standing behind it, in the context of Polish oral history research field. The latter has been expanding dynamically in recent years, gaining more and more recognition also among academic historians. One of its essential characteristics, to which this volume attests, is its methodological anchoring in biographical sociology. This field of research has a long academic tradition in Poland (though its current versions tend to adopt ‘Western’ ideas and research patterns) and offers scientific credibility to, still often insecure, oral history research. The text claims that scientific legitimisation of this kind does not necessarily lead to a convincing interpretation. The method, no matter how neutrally it may be presented, is not free from the authors’ value judgements and non-source-based historical knowledge (and imagination). The text, therefore, suggests a reading of the book – which is vastly a selection of edited, historically footnoted and narratively ordered oral history sources (biographical narrative interviews with the title soldiers) – that partly goes against the authors’ interpretations. Altogether, it makes up an exercise in (oral) historical hermeneutics.

For centuries Poland was a country where Jews willingly settled. In the first years of XX century, Jews made up a large percentage of Poland’s inhabitants. But when the Second World War broke out the extermination of Jews threw a shadow upon the relations between Jews and Christians in Poland. Communism by no means favored a mutual reconciliation. In free Poland, it is however necessary to make the most of this common historical heritage as a foundation for a Christian – Jewish dialogue which opens up new perspectives.

The article attempts to provide a contextual interpretation of a few chosen poems written by Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński. The biographical and historical context left an extraordinary imprint on the poet’s work. In his lyrics, along with light-hearted, fairy tale like scenery there appear, in the course of time, increasingly clear and menacing signs of the horrifying reality of war and Nazi occupation. The poet searches for salvation and recovery of the original world of nature. Nevertheless, he ends up being defeated by the terrifying forces of history.

Opis:
This article (or rather this essay) demonstrates several possibilities for a slightly different perspective on not so much everyday life during the occupation but on everyday lives. Only within the framework of the German occupation, which from the summer of 1941 covered almost the entire pre-war territory of Poland, the range of differences, both between administrative units (e.g., the General Government, the Wartheland or the Eastern Borderlands) as well as within them, between city and countryside, between individual social, professional, ethnic and age groups, was vast. The occupation was not a static and homogeneous phenomenon but a diverse and dynamic one, full of complex interactions. This text, based variously on the subject literature, published and archival sources (Polish and German), clandestine and official press, focuses on the following phenomena: the situation of Polish officials working for the occupation administration, mobility (both spatial and social – horizontal and vertical), relations between the city and the countryside, the breakdown of social norms, the wartime economy (with a greater than usually considered subjectivity of Polish actors) or the process of ‘taming’ the occupation (including terror), both materially and psychologically. The text may be treated as encouragement and invitation to interdisciplinary, methodologically innovative, cross-sectional research on Polish society during the Second World War.

At the crossroads of philosophy, religion and literature arises the question of meaning. The feeling of absurdity of the world and the loss of the meaning of life, accompanied by a desperate attempt to (re)create it, are typical for people stigmatized by borderline experiences of collective traumas, such as war. As a combatant of the Second World War and a great admirer of Marcel Proust, Claude Simon undertakes a tireless search for lost meaning, which emerges discreetly behind the pessimism with which he describes the absurdity of the world. A close reading of his most famous novel, La Route des Flandres (1960), reveals to us some subtle indications about this quest for meaning, which becomes also a quest for identity.

The paper discussed Dziennik wojenny [War Journal] by Leopold Buczkowski. It posed a question concerning the origins of the text and the subsequent stages of its development. That is a challenging task since the original version of the work is not available. Additionally, the lack of the first version makes it difficult to examine the so-called material sphere of the journal. It can be reconstructed only based on the surviving manuscript version. The author of the paper also discussed Dziennik wojenny against the background of other early works by Buczkowski (Wertepy and Czarny potok, a collection of a few dozen poems), from the perspective of editorial and philological problems. He also demonstrated the need for a new edition of Dziennik wojenny, and indicated the errors committed in the existing edition.
