Opis:
This paper presents findings from the planning and testing of a didactic unit for students of Italian as a second language, a unit that focuses on how to use the multipurpose word che (che polivalente). The materials used in this unit are Italian songs. The aim of this testing is to support the training of future language mediators, interpreters, and translators at the Department of Interpreting and Translation of the University of Bologna by raising awareness about a linguistic trait of the neo-standard, i.e., the new standard variety of Italian language. This paper examines the didactic context of testing, how it was carried out, and the phenomenon of the multipurpose che; it also attempts to classify the various cases of the che polivalente in two macro-areas. The outcomes of a quantitative analysis of the data gathered through monitoring are thought to provide evidence for how this practice of using songs may prove useful both in creating a positive atmosphere that fosters language acquisition, as well as in enhancing motivation based on the concept of pleasure. This may facilitate the processing of an otherwise incomprehensible linguistic input and lay the groundwork for further research on the subject, which may also allow for a broader study.

Three approaches to the etymology of Slavic * - are developed under two complementary assumptions about the age of the forms reconstructed with short second syllable. These three approaches are tested to determine which best yields the spread of attested accentual and other forms listed in representative sources. Derivations containing the PIE neuter deictic *hed as first component are found to be the most fruitful if it is assumed that anlaut laryngeals remained in Slavic until the completion of both Winter’s law and the subsequent loss by dissimilation of one or more laryngeal reflexes, including the laryngeal component of PIE *d, in this compound word, all these reflexes having merged by this time in some kind of glottal constriction. Comments are also offered on the etymologies of Slavic * (ъ)và and Lith. võs.

The main objective of the paper is a preliminary analysis of the dynamic interaction between the language-emotional-communicative processes which occur in language classrooms and both the natural conditions as well as student-/teacher-generated factors in classroom environments. In the article, a linguistic experiment conducted in three language classrooms with English as the students’ second language is described and an analysis of the research outcome is undertaken. The analysis of the research outcome serves a better understanding of the mechanisms which govern successful communication in English as the second language. Thus, the intention of analysing the experiment results might also be considered a voice in the discussion on homeostatic tendencies in a language classroom.

The goal of the present study was to characterize how neighborhood structure in sign language influences lexical sign acquisition in order to extend our understanding of how the lexicon influences lexical acquisition in both sign and spoken languages. A referent-matching lexical sign learning paradigm was administered to a group of 29 hearing sign language learners in order to create a sign lexicon. The lexicon was constructed based on exposures to signs that resided in either sparse or dense handshape and location neighborhoods. The results of the current study indicated that during the creation of the lexicon signs that resided in sparse neighborhoods were learned better than signs that resided in dense neighborhoods. This pattern of results is similar to what is seen in child first language acquisition of spoken language. Therefore, despite differences in child first language and adult second language acquisition, these results contribute to a growing body of literature that implicates the phonological features that structure of the lexicon is influential in initial stages of lexical acquisition for both spoken and sign languages. This is the first study that uses an innovated lexicon-construction methodology to explore interactions between phonology and the lexicon in L2 acquisition of sign language.

English is commonly referred to as a “universal” language. Many people decide to study the language for a variety of reasons – to learn about a culture, to have a method of intercultural communication, to find a job, etc. In Poland specifically, students learn grammar and the theory of learning a language over the actual practice. As a result, common grammar mistakes occur throughout their learning process. This paper presents a list of these common grammar mistakes that English learners make. It also includes tips on how to improve one’s grammar and what to pay attention to.
Wiele osób decyduje się studiować go z różnych przyczyn: by poznać kulturę krajów anglojęzycznych, zdobyć narzędzie do komunikacji międzykulturowej, znaleźć pracę itd.

The realisation of phonetic categories reflects a complex relationship between individual phonetic parameters and both linguistic and extra-linguistic conditioning of language usage. The present paper investigates the effect of selected socio-linguistic variables, such as the age, the amount of language use and cultural/social distance in English used by Polish immigrants to the U.S. Individual parameters used in the realisation of the category ‘voice’ have been found to vary in their sensitivity to extra-linguistic factors: while the production of target-like values of all parameters is related to the age, it is the closure duration that is most stable in the correspondence to the age and level of language proficiency. The VOT and vowel duration, on the other hand, prove to be more sensitive to the amount of language use and attitudinal factors.

Opis:
Emotion in second language acquisition (SLA) has recently received greater attention because it is largely implicated in daily conversations, which may affect second or foreign language (L2) use including listening comprehension. Most research into emotion and L2 listening comprehension is focused exclusively on anxiety, with an attempt to reduce its negative effects on individuals’ listening performance. With the arrival of positive psychology in SLA, researchers began to take a holistic view of a wider range of emotions including enjoyment that language learners experience during their L2 communication. The current study explored the relationships among listening anxiety, enjoyment, listening comprehension performance, and listening metacognitive awareness among a group of 410 international students in a Canadian university. Correlational analyses showed that listening anxiety was negatively correlated with enjoyment. However, these two variables shared only 18% of their variance, indicating that listening anxiety and enjoyment are related but independent emotions. This study suggests that anxiety and enjoyment in L2 listening are not the opposite ends of the same emotional continuum, but each serves a different purpose. L2 learners should work to find intriguing and enjoyable experiences in language learning, rather than focusing merely on reducing anxiety.

The aim of this study was to explore automaticity of lexical access and executive functions of language learners and bilinguals while considering their language automaticity. Three groups of youths aged 14 to 18 were tested: Croatian-German early bilinguals, Croatian high school students who participated in a German immersion programme at school and Croatian high school students of German as a foreign language. The participants were tested on a modified version of the Stroop test (i.e., a Stroop-like test). It presented pictures of an animal or an object with names of an animal or an object written over the picture. The names were written in Croatian or German and were either congruent or incongruent. Lexical access was slower for the bilinguals in both Croatian and German, which suggests that they used more of their cognitive resources because both of their languages were highly active, and more executive control was required to complete the task.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie walorów, jakie niesie nauczanie języka polskiego jako obcego/drugiego poprzez teksty kultury, zwłaszcza literaturę współczesną (przytoczono fragmenty takich książek jak m.in. Bezmatek Miry Marcinów, Rozdeptałem czarnego kota przez przypadek Filipa Zawady, Prymityw. Epopeja narodowa Marcina Kołodziejczyka). Artykuł podpowiada, w jaki sposób za pomocą tekstów literackich możemy mówić o polskiej przestrzeni lokalowej i krajobrazie miejskim (mieszkaniu, domu, regionie).
The article aims to present the advantages of teaching Polish as a foreign/second language through cultural texts, especially contemporary literature (the study quotes excerpts from such books as Bezmatek [No-mother] by Mira Marcinów, Rozdeptałem czarnego kota przez przypadek [I’ve trampled a black cat accidentely] by Filip Zawada, Prymityw. Epopeja narodowa [Primitive. National epic] by Marcin Kołodziejczyk). The article suggests how we can talk about the Polish domestic space and urban landscape (apartment, house, region) through literary texts. Teaching through literature is an excellent method of conveying knowledge about language and reality, social landscape and culture. According to the author of this article, literature is an essential element in the glottodidactic process.

Autorzy artykułu próbują to wykazać, przedstawiając różne aspekty Second Life w zastosowaniach dydaktycznych, naukowych, a także kulturowo-poznawczych. Tytułem wprowadzenia została przedstawiona konstrukcja logiczna światów wirtualnych. Następnie zostały przybliżone wybrane aspekty infrastruktury i nawigacji w świecie wirtualnym.
The article focuses on three-dimensional virtual environments and their educational functionality, on the example of Second Life. As opposed to some opinions raised in the literature recently, 3D virtual worlds are not passe yet, at least in the educational sector. The authors of the article attempt to support the thesis above and present different aspects of Second Life in educational, scientific, cultural and cognitional applications. To begin with, a logical construction of virtual worlds is given. Then, some infrastructural and navigational characteristics is presented. The next part of the article is devoted to Polish spots in Second Life, which is supported with some statistics and user analysis. Then, some affordances of 3D virtual worlds are discussed with reference to foreign language learning. Some examples are given of informal and occasional language learning as well as formalized an institutionalized language education. The following part is devoted to virtual tourism and popular spots to visit in Second Life. Finally, general opinions on the values and limitations of 3D worlds are compiled, based on the literature.

The article provides an overview of the 20th–21st century linguistic theories in the context of child second language acquisition as well as raises awareness about their infl uence on and use in the learning of preschoolers whose second language is Latvian, carrying out content analysis of the Minority Preschool Education Program(with instruction in Russian), the Latvian Language Program of X preschool education establishment, teaching resources (teaching aid kits, didactic handouts) as well as the Latvian language as the second language study content. The conclusion is drawn that the theory of communicative competence and the systemic functional grammar theory prevail as well as the basic principles of the behavioral theory can be discerned. In the teaching resources and learning process it is advisable to more often incorporate the same language material repetition in different situations and new combinations. Consideration must be given to more positive and negative transfer (interference) emphasis. To prevent children’s errors it is advisable to provide and incorporate special exercises in the teaching resources as well as methodological recommendations for the Latvian language teachers.

This paper discusses two topics which are very popular nowadays among the academics dealing with foreign language teaching, namely: intercultural competence and pragmatic error. The author notes the fact that those two notions appear separately, because the starting points for discussing them are usually different fields of science. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that on one hand the two notions need to be treated uniformly, and on the other, that the pragmatic error should be included in error classifications which are references for both the authors of handbooks as well as people educating future teachers. For that purpose, the author defines intercultural competence, presents various approaches to error and its classification in teaching, and then explains what pragmatic error is and describes its linguistic characteristics.
