Opis:
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which can lead to severe respiratory failure, has become a real threat to pregnancy. Although vertical transmission of the virus through the placenta appears to be rare, there is increasing evidence that a SARS-CoV-2 infection may cause complications during pregnancy. We report a case of COVID-19 in a pregnancy complicated by fetal pleural effusion in the third trimester of pregnancy. To our knowledge, only 4 similar cases have been reported to date. A 29-year-old woman in the 37th week of pregnancy admitted to the department of pregnancy pathology due to right fetal pleural effusion. In the 34th week of pregnancy, the patient suffered from COVID-19 with symptoms of fever and general weakness. The infection was confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). At 38 weeks, vaginal delivery occurred. The male newborn with a 6/7/8 point Apgar score required continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) breathing assistance and was transferred to the intensive care unit. The rapid antigen test was negative. The ultrasound showed collapse of the right lung compressed by fluid in the pleural cavity. Inflammation, congenital TORCH and group B Coxsackie virus infection, chromosomal disorders and anatomical defects were excluded. During hospitalization 850 ml of lymphatic fluid was drained. We suspect a possible causal relationship between non-immune fetal hydrops and coronavirus disease.

Opis:
This paper aims to assess the influence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the accrual-based earnings management patterns in non-financial business groups in the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE). This study contributes to the existing literature by considering earnings manipulation behaviours in assessing the reporting data quality, both in consolidated financial statements of business groups and individual financial statements of parent undertakings. The research methods are based on the Modified Jones Model with the simultaneous separation of individual subcategories of accruals via cross-sectional analysis and time-series data approach (separately for each business group). Empirical findings supported the presumption that earnings manipulation schemes in the SARS-CoV-2 transitional (2020) and crisis (2021) periods differed statistically compared to the previous 2019 and 2020 years, respectively. Moreover, this article proved that the company‘s potential financial distress could imply accrual-based earnings management behaviours and moderate the association between the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and earnings manipulations activities. Finally, the obtained results confirmed that although business groups have an expanded set of balance sheet policy instruments, the quality of earnings reported in the individual financial statements of parent undertakings and the consolidated financial statements of business groups were similar during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Opis:
Nearly two years into the pandemic, a large body of data has emerged on how COVID-19-positive patients function with the viral infection. It is now known that the virus targets the central nervous system(CNS). As a result, in addition to the expected common health complaints, patients display cognitive and emotional problems. Cognitive deficits should be expected particularly in patients who have arrived at an intensive care unit as a result of respiratory failure, in patients suffering from comorbid neurodegenerative diseases and respiratory conditions, as well as in the elderly. However, these may also occur in patients with moderate to mild symptoms as well as in those of a younger age. The cognitive impairment has an unknown profile. Given the hypothesised hippocampal vulnerability to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, one might expect particular difficulties with memory, attention, information processing, and executive functions. With varying neuropsychological and emotional problems, convalescents in trying to return to their social, family and professional life require professional psychological assistance. The role of neuropsychologists is here crucial. Indeed, many patients will require a detailed, multifaceted neuropsychological diagnosis that will form the basis for subsequent neuropsychological rehabilitation. An early detection of neuropsychological manifestations could modify the risk of subsequent irreversible impairment and further neurocognitive decline.

Opis:
Objectives The assessment of the prevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in various professional groups is very important. Hence, the purpose of the following study was to analyze the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among employees performing both medical and nonmedical professions before the launch of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Material and Methods The study was conducted among employers of 1 of the institutions: The Provincial Specialist Hospital of Władysław Biegański in Łódź, Poland, Radio Łódź and the Border Guards of Łódź Airport. Blood samples were collected in December 2020–February 2021. Patients were screened for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Simultaneously respondents were asked to complete a self-designed questionnaire including demographic data, detailed profession, history of SARS-CoV-2 infection and willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Results Seroprevalence was significantly higher in the group of rural residents (p < 0.012), participants who declared previous COVID-19 infection (p < 0.001) and healthcare workers (HCWs) (p = 0.002), especially nurses (35.5%, p = 0.003) and medics worked in areas dedicated to COVID-19 than in other specialties (38.7% vs. 26.8%, respectively, p = 0.017). There was no association between the presence of antibodies and the gender (p = 0.118), age (p = 0.559) or BMI (p = 0.998). Conclusions Healthcare workers, in particular nurses, are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 in the workplace. Occupational infections can occur during occur not only during contact with the patient, but also with members of the medical team who do not show typical symptoms of the disease. Shortages in medical staff may also increase the number of infections among HCWs. Medical and hospital staff providing health services during the COVID-19 epidemic in Poland, may seek compensation in the event of consequences related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The effectiveness of education and self-discipline in complying to safety rules among HCWs should also be constantly monitored.

The purpose of the study was twofold: (1) to present post-COVID-19 syndrome, which involves a variety of ongoing neurological, neuropsychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection followed by a severe course of COVID-19 treated in long term pharmacologically induced coma in a visual artist, which impacted on her artwork; (2) to present QEEG/ERP results and neuropsychological testing results in the evaluation of the effectiveness of a comprehensive neurotherapy program, with individualized EEG-Neurofeedback, and art-therapy in the reduction of post-COVID-19 syndrome in this artist. Ms. G., 42, a visual artist, portraitist, with good health, became ill in May 2022. Allegedly flu symptoms appeared first. After a few days, shortness of breath joined in. The PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 was positive. The patient was hospitalized, referred to the ICU, put on a respirator and treated over 11 days of a pharmacologically induced coma. Two months after leaving hospital the patient developed post-COVID-19 syndrome. She was diagnosed by an interdisciplinary team: a neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and neuropsychologist. A PET scan of her brain revealed extensive changes involving a loss of metabolism in various brain areas. The presence of complex post-COVID, neurological, neuropsychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders was found and a neuropsychiatrist suggested a diagnosis of post-COVID schizophrenia. She was refered to the Reintegration and Training Center of the Polish Neuropsychological Society. We tested the working hypothesis as to the presence of schizophrenia and there was no reduction in the difference of ERPs waves under GO/NOGO task conditions. The absence of a neuromarker for schizophrenia allowed us to exclude this diagnosis and to propose a new disease entity, that being post-COVID-19 syndrome. She received a comprehensive two-component program of neurotherapy: (1) program A, consisting in goal-oriented neuropsychological rehabilitation, including art therapy, and (2) program B, based on the most commonly used form of EEG-Neurofeedback: frequency/ power EEG-Neurofeedback, using 2 bipolar surface electrodes, with the protocols written for her specific needs. The comprehensive neurotherapy program lasted 10 weeks, EEG Neurofeedback and art therapy classes were conducted 3 times a week for 45 minutes each. We found that after the completion of the comprehensive neurotherapy program there was a statistically significant reduction in high beta activity compared to the normative HBI database, which is associated with a reduction of anxiety. Also, we observed the improvement of neurocognitive functioning in neuropsychological testing (a significant reduction of anxiety and a noticeable improvement in neurocognitive functions). It should be stressed that the artist was happy that she had regained the ability to create, and even sells her artwork, although her style of painting had changed. Almost all the neurological, psychiatric, neurocognitive, emotional and behavioral disturbances, were reduced in their severity. The artist showed marked improvement and was able to return to painting. The artwork she produced after her illness is in high demand with art collectors. It can be also helpful in the reintegration of the Self System, and the improvement in her quality of life. Human Brain Index (HBI) methodology might be very useful in diagnosing and developing therapies for patients with Post-COVID-19 Syndrome.

Opis:
Introduction. The article aims to present the difficulties experienced by mothers during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was assumed that during the pandemic, difficulties related to reconciling work and family life would intensify, there would be changes in the relationship between mother and child, and the division of family responsibilities between the child’s parents would change. Aim. The main problem was: What difficulties related to family life during the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus are experienced by the examined mothers? Material and methods. The research used a qualitative approach. The source of the research data are interviews with mothers. Results. During the pandemic, mothers’ difficulties varied in nature. Research results indicate both negative and positive (from deterioration to improvement of relationships) consequences of change in the relationship between mother and child, attempts to combine work and family life, and the division of responsibilities between partners. The surveyed mothers report an increase in tension and stress as a result of the emerging conflict between work and family life, limited support from the partner and a difficult, full of difficult emotional relationship with the child. On the second continuum are mothers who, despite a difficult situation, tried to reconcile work and family life, received support from their partner, shared the responsibilities of caring for the child and running the household equally. Conclusion. We should consider the pandemic in terms of a difficult situation. In a way, it forced mothers to construct a new everyday life related to the role of mother and employee simultaneously. So far, existing attempts to balance both spheres of life leading to maintaining balance (“work-life balance”) have not always proved effective during the pandemic. In many cases, the pandemic has led to a reset of the existing family model and re-creation.
Wprowadzenie. Cel. Zapytano o główny problem: Jakich trudności związanych z życiem rodzinnym w czasie pandemii wywołanej wirusem SARS-CoV-2 doświadczają badane matki? Materiał i metody. W badaniu zastosowano podejście jakościowe. Źródłem danych badawczych są wywiady z matkami. Wyniki. W wielu przypadkach pandemia doprowadziła do zresetowania dotychczasowego modelu rodziny i stworzenia go na nowo.

According to the theory of technological determinism, the development and popularisation of communication techniques has led to the emergence of two groups of participants in internet discourse: (1) those who have been ‘immersed’ in the Internet since childhood – digital natives – and (2) those who remember functioning in the offline world – digital immigrants. The main goal of this article is to present the interpenetration of the needs and demands of digital education and the implementation of these demands in the academic environment. The first part of the article presents the main theories related to the topic and attempts to periodise the phenomenon of education at universities undergoing virtualisation. The second part presents research conducted with the use of the CATI method on a sample of 433 students and 133 university teachers concerning the IT revolution at universities related to the SARS-COV2 pandemic and the need to move classes from lecture halls to virtual spaces. The last part of the article answers the hypotheses posed: (1) the initial dysfunctions of the education process in universities were due to the institutions’ unpreparedness for the remote environment and (2) in the opinion of the respondents, the remote education process is not as effective as education in a lecture hall. The conclusions of the study indicate that it is necessary to systematically fund research on remote teaching methodology and tools for effective distance learning. In addition to research, it is also advisable to conduct training and continuously implement new practical solutions in the workplace so that the new media serve teachers and students. In order for distance education to be effective, it is necessary to redefine the use of new media, move away from control towards collaboration and allow students to take ownership of the learning process.

Objectives Healthcare systems in European countries, including METEOR partner countries, are faced with the aging population, an increase in costs for innovative technologies and medication, a shortage of health professionals, and inequality in access to healthcare. Presented paper aimed to recognize and compare the functioning of healthcare systems between METEOR partner countries and simultaneously check if the current epidemiological situation of COVID-19 has some relationship with the number of medical staff, yearly gross domestic product, or documented percentage of fully vaccinated people. Material and Methods In the model of descriptive epidemiological study, available demographic, socioeconomic, and healthcare organizational data in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and Poland were compared to the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 pandemic (percentage of fully vaccinated people, incidence, and mortality) in all mentioned countries. Results Obtained data confirmed that the lowest number of physicians, as well as the life expectancy and gross domestic product per capita, is in Poland. Simultaneously, the lower number of medical staff and lower gross domestic product (GDP) correspond to higher mortality due to COVID-19. The percentage of fully vaccinated with the last dose of the primary series was also the lowest in Poland. Conclusions Obtained results confirmed that higher mortality due to COVID-19 in METEOR participants’ countries is related to a lower number of medical staff and weaker GDP. The worse situation was noted in Poland, a country with problems in the functioning healthcare system, including hospital care and a serious shortage of practicing medical staff.

Opis:
The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic has changed how almost every sphere of our lives functions. Its greatest impact can be seen in the functioning of the health care sector, whose task was not only to care for the sick or people suspected of infection, but also to take all measures to prevent the spread of infections. The imposition of a state of epidemic threat in Poland, and then the state of epidemic, provided a basis for imposing a number of restrictions that had a significant impact on the realisation of patients’ fundamental rights. The purpose of the considerations is to present and analyse the limitations of selected patient rights during the SARSCoV-2 pandemic. This article first presents issues related to patient rights in genere, emphasizing their importance for the proper functioning of the health care system in the country. Next, the limitations of selected patient rights, which unquestionably occurred in the era of COVID-19, are presented. It is shown that the rights indicated were not only limited, and sometimes even excluded. The article also presents an analysis of the annual reports of the Patients’ Rights Ombudsman, which in their content confirms the great increase in the number of violations of patient rights in the period of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Consequently, this resulted in a far-reaching negative impact on the perception of the health care system in our country.

Opis:
This paper presents a description of the methodology developed for estimation of pathogen transmission in transport and the results of the case study application for long-distance passenger transport. The primary objective is to report the method developed and the application for case studies in various passenger transport services. The most important findings and achievements of the presented study are the original universal methodology to estimate the probability of pathogen transmission with full mathematical disclosure and an open process formula, to make it possible to take other specific mechanisms of virus transmission when providing transport services. The results presented conducted an analysis on the mechanisms of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogens during the transport process, to examine the chain of events as a result of which passengers may be infected. The author proposed a new method to estimate the probability of transmission of viral pathogens using the probability theory of the sum of elementary events. This is a new approach in this area, the advantage of which is a fully explicit mathematical formula that allows the method to be applied to various cases. The findings of this study can facilitate the management of epidemic risk in passenger transport operators and government administration. It should be clearly emphasised that the developed method and estimated values are the probabilities of pathogen transmission. Estimating the probability of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogen is not the same as the probability of viral infection, and more so the probability of contracting COVID-19. Viral infection strongly depends on viral mechanisms, exposure doses, and contact frequency. The probability of contracting COVID-19 and its complications depends on the individual characteristics of the immune system, even with confirmed viral infection. However, it is undoubtedly that the probability of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pathogen is the most reliable measure of infection risk, which can be estimated according to the objective determinants of pathogen transmission.

Opis:
Objectives The diverse list of tasks and needs related to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic may lead to different professional experiences in nurses working with patients infected with and not infected with SARS-CoV-2. The aim of the study was to measure the professional challenges of nurses working during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Poland. Material and Methods The study was conducted in 2021 in a group of 151 nurses. The following scales were used: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), the Impact of Event Scale – Revised (IES-R), the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ-SF), the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey (MBIHSS). Results Nurses working with patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 showed a positive correlation between workload and emotional exhaustion (ρ = 0.26, p = 0.02), as well as positive correlations among control, community and depersonalization (ρ = 0.25, p = 0.02; ρ = 0.23, p = 0.04). Among nurses working with uninfected patients, positive correlations were found among control, community, fairness and emotional exhaustion (ρ = 0.40, p = 0.000; ρ = 0.41, p = 0.000; ρ = 0.25, p = 0.03), as well as correlations between control and depersonalization (ρ = 0.33, p = 0.01), and among control, community and personal accomplishment (ρ = 0.23, p = 0.05; ρ = 0.27, p = 0.02). Conclusions Nurses working during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic with infected and uninfected patients both experienced a variety of psychosocial challenges in coping with the demands of their work, social relationships and personal life. Opis:
A major challenge over the pandemic period was to establish the criteria for recognizing COVID-19 as an occupational disease. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control has attempted to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 in individual occupational groups and economy sectors in the European Union and the United Kingdom, and to identify possible factors increasing the transmission of the virus at workplaces. Legal regulations of various countries in the world allow COVID-19 to be recognized as an accident at work and/or an occupational disease. In Poland, an occupational disease is defined as a disease caused by harmful factors occurring in the work environment or connected with performing a given job, included in the official list of occupational diseases. When assessing occupational exposure in the healthcare sector, it should be considered that healthcare workers include all persons in contact with patients or their biological material, as well as employees who are not medical professionals but who share a common space with patients due to the nature of their work. The latter group includes administrative and technical employees, control and rescue service workers, people supporting medical staff, and employees of nursing homes. In the case of non-medical occupations, the decision to recognize COVID-19 as an occupational disease should be made on an individual basis, after confirming a significant risk of contracting a SARS-CoV-2 virus infection at the workplace and in the absence of evidence of a non-occupational source of infection. An assessment of occupational exposure should always include evaluating the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.

Opis:
Purpose: The authors analyze the decisions made from March to September 2020 which affected the functioning of Polish health care facilities. According to the authors, that period determined and significantly influenced the decisions taken by state authorities during the subsequent waves of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis of the issue presented in the paper will be a descriptive one. The research exploration will be carried out using the desk research method. Findings: Analyses of secondary and compilation documents showed that the authorities of the Republic of Poland were not prepared to manage the state in unprecedented conditions caused by the first wave of the pandemic, and the decisions taken at that time by public administration bodies were chaotic, not always well thought out and often influenced by public opinion. Originality/value (mandatory) The article can be considered original due to the fact that it combines an analysis of Polish legal acts issued during the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic with, above all, an analysis of their social effects. The analyses showed that Polish authorities were not prepared for the pandemic crisis. The article is addressed to state administration employees as well as employees and students of universities with majors in national defense, public safety, medicine, medical rescue and public health. It may become a basis for developing legal acts of a preventive nature, which can be immediately applied in the event of another epidemic.
