Opis:: The paper raises the question of whether the linguistic relativity proposal, also known as the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, should be used as a frame of reference for modern research into the relationship of language to cognition. The question is discussed in the context of Whorf’s (1956) writings, with emphasis on factors that are crucial to the proposal, i.e. language, thought, and behavior.The second issue addressed by the paper is whether linguistic categories provide an accurate window on cognition, as was suggested by Whorf and in some of the more recent debates. The analysis takes the form of a correlational study which examines the categorization criteria applied in tests that require language-based and language-neutral judgments.

Opis:: The history of so-called ‘linguistic relativity’ is an odd and multifaceted one. After knowing alternate fortunes and being treated by different academic branches, today there are some new ways of investigating the language-thought-reality problem that (i) put into dialogue the latest trends in language-related disciplines (ii) generate room for philosophical themes previously overlooked, (iii) reassess the very idea of linguistic relativity, despite its popularized versions which have circulated for decades and which have led an otherwise fruitful debate to extremes. It is argued that a multidisciplinary approach is desirable in order to broaden future research. In the last few years the opportunity to study this matter following a common trend in several disciplines has been created. Language, and cognition too, are now conceived as intrinsically social phenomena. It is argued that relativistic effects should be investigated in social realms, and that analytic philosophy could help with this task.

Opis:: This article tries to determine the effect and importance of mother tongue on cultural education in primary schools. Using the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, it investigates the relationship between mother tongue and culture. This research focuses on the language and culture of the Kurdish people in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The questions of research are: What is the impact of mother tongue on children's culture? Is there a relationship between the mother tongue and the culture, the identity and personality of the children in primary schools? What is more, are the Kurdish language and culture in danger of vanishing? The researcher used mixed methods of qualitative and quantitative, as well as used questionnaires among primary school students in the city of Erbil in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This study resulted in the conclusion that the first language has a profound impact on the culture of students in primary schools. In contrast, bilingualism has an impact on children’s distance from their own culture. In addition, three basic points that are concluded in the results of this article are recommended to the government to be implemented in their policy and the education system. Furthermore, the results of this study show that the Kurdish language and Kurdish culture are in trouble now.

Opis:: Since language is an integral part of culture, we may say that language is its carrier. Consequently, in order to fully participate in the social life it is not enough to be a proficient language speaker. What we need is the knowledge of particular customs which, to certain extent, can be acquired during inter-cultural communication classes. Therefore, FL teachers should try to develop intercultural awareness in their students, so that they could avoid stress-ful situations and misunderstandings in communication. It is particularly important in the case of adult learners who have already developed routine models of behaviour expected in their motherland.

Opis:: Andriej N. Kołmogorow – jeden z największych matematyków XX wieku – włożył ogromny wkład w rozwój nauk humanistycznych: historii, teorii wiersza i lingwistyki. Postać Kołmogorowa i wyniki prowadzonych przez niego badań nie są jednak dobrze znane lingwistom. Celem tej pracy jest omówienie Semioticzeskich posłanij Kołmogorowa (Kołmogorow 1997) i pokazanie wniosków, do których doprowadziła mnie ich lektura. Zauważyłem, że podejście Kołmogorowa do zagadnień kultury, sztuki i języka jest w duchu hipotezy Sapira-Whorfa oraz że pewna naturalna modyfikacja idei Kołmogorowa na temat tzw. języka kultury daje nowy argument na rzecz prawdziwości hipotezy Sapira-Whorfa. Ponadto w rozważaniach Kołmogorowa o semiotyce kultury i sztuki znalazłem związki z psychoanalizą Freuda.
Andrey N. Kolmogorov – one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century – made a huge contribution to the humanities: history, poem theory and linguistics. Kolmogorov’s results, however, are not well known among linguists. The aim of my work is to discuss Kolmogorov’s Semiotic Messages and to present the conclusions of my reading. I noticed that Kolmogorov’s approach to culture, art, and language is in the spirit of Sapir-Whorf’s hypothesis. I show that a natural modification of Kolmogorov’s idea about the so-called language of culture gives a new argument for the truthfulness of Sapir-Whorf’s hypothesis. Moreover, in Kolmogorov’s reflections on the semiotics of culture and art I found links with Freud’s psychoanalysis.
