Opis:
The main objective of this thesis is the assessment of the quantitative and chemical groundwater and surface water status of the Łukowica river catchment area. This area is located within the Magura Nappe of Outer Carpathians that are built of flysch, which is a series of alternating layers of sandstone and shale (Oszczypko & Wójcik 1989a, 1989b). The reason for making hydrological characteristics of the catchment area is i.e. to determine the status and causes of hydrological changes occurring within it, using the surface and groundwater, management, the degree of anthropogenic impact on the water, quantitative and chemical balance of water and the size of disposable and renewable resources of analyzed area. Hydrological investigations are necessary to know the process of water circulation in the catchment area. Then these investigations were the basis for further works focused on the factors affecting features of the river regime. The work is based on my own field researches carried out in September 2015. In order to assess the quantitative and chemical waters status, hydrogeological mappings of the field were performed, including measurements of the depth of groundwater table in dug wells by hydrogeological whistle. The discharge of sources and the volume flow of the river in the upper, middle and lower section, and two inflows was also examined. Flow measurements for the river were made on the 10 meter-section by float method. For the inflows, the volumetric method was applied (Banach 2005). At the end, the literature and cartographic elaborations were collected. Prepared materials enabled to make the hydrogeological map of the quaternary multiaquifer formation and to illustrate the circulation of groundwater. On these basis the groundwater’s renewable and disposable resources of the catchment basin were calculated (Chełmicki 2001) and they are 3086 m 3 /d and 1543 m 3 /d respectively. To determine the amount of reserves of groundwater resources it is necessary to compare obtained results with an average annual extraction from groundwater intakes ( Rozporządzenie..., 2008). For the purpose of the work the water samples were collected in 7 dug wells and in 4 points alongside the river – in the upper, middle and lower section. The samples were analyzed in the Accredited Hydrogeochemical Laboratory of the Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology Department AGH (Accreditation Certificate AB 1050). The test results were the basis for assessing the chemical status of water. They are developed in accordance with applicable laws, which are based on the Water Framework Directive of the European Parliament ( Commission Directive..., 2009) and Regulation of the Minister of the Environment for the criteria and method of evaluation of groundwater status ( Rozporządzenie..., 2015). The mineralization of the surface water of Łukowica River is more or less constant at the entire length and it is 430–450 mg/dm 3, whereas the mineralization of groundwater for the catchment is more diverse and ranges from 325 mg/dm 3 to 553 mg/dm 3. According to the Shchukarev–Priklonskiy classification, both surface water and groundwater are HCO 3 -Ca-Mg type. On the basis of the results of chemical analyzes, the chemical status of groundwater was considered as good, since they were classified as class II of groundwater quality ( Rozporządzenie..., 2015). The limit values for class I have been exceeded for the following cations: Zn 2+, Cu 2+, Mo 6+, Ag +, Ca 2+ and anions: NO 2 − and HCO 3 −. The chemical status of surface water was considered as good, since it was classified as class II of surface water quality ( Rozporządzenie..., 2011). The limit values for I class have been exceeded only for anion HCO 3 −. All European Union countries, including Poland, are obliged to respect the Water Framework Directive, established by the European Parliament in 2000 and updated in 2009 ( Commission Directive..., 2009). It obliges member states to perform i.e. assessment of quantitative and chemical status in an area of separated bodies of groundwater. Result of the assessment of the quantitative and chemical groundwater status is the basis for the development of action programs. These programs lead to protection of groundwater bodies and to achieve good groundwater status at the latest by 2015. Many catchments of small streams have not been covered by such tests so far, hence the appropriateness of conducting the studies mentioned above. Summing up, both surface water and groundwater of the Łukowica River catchment area were classified into class II of water quality, what means that they are characterized by a good chemical status. Mineralization of surface water is similar on the entire length of the river and is 430–450 mg/dm 3. In contrast, mineralization of groundwater is in the range from 325 mg/dm 3 to 553 mg/dm 3. The amount of renewable resources for this catchment is 3086 m 3 /d and the value of disposable resources is 1543 m 3 /d.

Opis:
Three profiles were sited on the major landscape elements of crest, middle slope and lower slope on three land uses; Forest (FS), Rubber (RS) and arable cropping (AS) at Agoi-Ibami in Central Cross River State, Nigeria. For study purposes, soil samples were collected from the morphogenetic horizons for the analysis of physical and chemical properties. Results showed that the surface horizon textures were mostly sandy loams with little sandy clay loam, while subsurface textures were mostly sandy clay loams with few silt clay loams and clays. The bulk densities were below the ranges of 1.46 to 1.63 g cm-3 for silts and clays and 1.75 g cm-3 for sands. This imposes stresses such as mechanical resistance to root penetration, decrease in cultivation and organic matter. The surface and subsurface pH values vary from 4.9–4.5 in FS, 4.9-4.6 in RS and 4.9 in AS, indicating that the soils are very strongly acidic. The Organic carbon contents was low with mean values of 4.33 and 0.6 % in surface and subsurface for FS, 2.10 and 0.50 % for surface and subsurface for RS, while surface and subsurface values proved to be 0.57 and 0.31 % for AS. The nitrogen contents was also low, mean values of 0.16 and 0.06 % for surface and subsurface for FS, 0.23 and 0.08 % for surface and subsurface for RS, and 0.19 and 0.10 % for surface and subsurface for AS. The content and available phosphorus are equally low, except for AS, with surface mean values ranging from 11.52 mg kg-1 to 13.87 mg kg-1. The exchangeable cations, Ca, Mg, K, and Na were very low, while exchangeable H+ and Al3+ were high. Base saturation was also low in FS and AS (< 50%) in surface soils, but higher in AS in the surface and in RS in the subsurface soils. The mean values of organic matter were 4.33 and 0.16 %. The land use should, therefore, be adjusted by application of recommended inorganic fertilizers and organic matter so as to support growth of crops such as maize, yams, cassava etc.

Thick deep-water sandstone successions are known from many localities in the Outer Western Carpathians. The present study is focused on comparison of deposits of the Piwniczna (PwSM) and Poprad (PpSM) Sandstone members belonging to the Magura Formation of the Magura Unit, outcropping in the eastern Slovakia and Poland border area. At the general level, a close similarity of the sandstone successions was confirmed by this study. However, in more detail, facies analysis shows differences in the thickness of the sandstone successions, in grain size and in the character of intervals between the thick sandstones. Thin-section study, though, showed almost the same modal composition in the sandstones analysed. The sandstone successions studied are interpreted as sandy debrites, the PwSM showing transitional facies to turbidites. These deposits rep resent channelized depositional lobes in the proximal part of a submarine fan with the PpSM closer to the source. The sediment source area was common to both lithostratigraphic units, and was most likely the South-Magura Ridge.

To improve the quality of raw materials from North East Algeria and their application in the field of flat glass manufacturing, the sandstone of El-Aouana (Jijel) was subjected to a physicochemical characterization. Analysis techniques such as X-ray diffraction, atomic absorption spectrophotometry and a chemical analysis of size fractions by sieving were used. According to this characterization it is noticed that sandstone feedstock contains primarily quartz (SiO2), as well as ferriferous minerals considered as impurities during glass manufacturing. This work concerns the removal of iron oxide from silica sandstone to obtain a material acceptable for flat glass manufacturing. For this, we have studied the silica enrichment process using a magnetic separation. Moreover, a leaching process by using hydrochloric acid has been studied under various experimental conditions; the parameters studied were: hydrochloric concentration, temperature, and time of contact. The results obtained show that the leaching studied presents a better removal of iron oxide after 150 min of treatment at temperature 90°C with a 3 mol/L, a concentrate obtained final of 99.16% SiO2 with a content of 0.01% Fe2O3.

Opis:
The study employs numerical calculations in the characterization of reservoir sandstone samples based on high-resolution X-ray computed microtomography. The major goals were to determine porosity through pore size distribution, permeability characterization through pressure field, and structure impact on rock strength by simulation of a uniaxial compression test. Two Miocene samples were taken from well S-3, located in the eastern part of the Carpathian Foredeep. Due to the relation between sample size and image resolution, two X-ray irradiation series with two different sample sizes were performed. In the first approach, the voxel side was 27 µm and in the second it was up to 2 µm. Two samples from different depths have been studied here. Sample 1 has petrophysical features of conventional reservoir deposits, in contrast to sample 2. The approximate grain size of sample 1 is in the range 0.1–1.0 mm, whereas for sample 2 it is 0.01–0.1 mm with clear sedimentation lamination and heterogenic structure. The porosity, as determined by µCT, of sample 1 is twice (10.3%) that of sample 2 (5.3%). The equivalent diameter of a majority of pores is less than 0.027 mm and their pore size distribution is unimodal right-hand asymmetrical in the case of both samples. In relations to numerical permeability tests, the flow paths are in the few privileged directions where the pressure is uniformly decreasing. Nevertheless, there are visible connections in sample 1, as is confirmed by the homogenous distribution of particles in the pore space of the sample and demonstrated in the particle flow simulations. The estimated permeability of the first sample is approximately four times higher than that of the second one. The uniaxial compression test demonstrated the huge impact of even minimal heterogeneity of samples in terms of micropores: 4–5 times loss of strength compared to the undisturbed sample. The procedure presented shows the promising combination of microstructural analysis and numerical simulations. More specific calculations of lab tests with analysis of variable boundary conditions should be performed in the future.

Opis:
Petrographic, cathodoluminescence, and phase chemistry studies of detrital grains were carried out on sandstones from the Permian Malužiná Formation in the Malé Karpaty Mts. (Hronic Unit, Western Carpathians, Slovakia) to determine their provenance and tectonic setting during the Permian. The results of the present study suggest derivation of the Malužiná Formation sandstones from multiple source areas. Major source lithologies were acid (felsic) plutonic rocks and low- to high-grade metamorphic rocks (probably metamorphosed igneous rocks and metasedimentary rocks), but notable amounts of detritus were also derived from felsic and mafic volcanic rocks. There was only a minor contribution from sedimentary rocks. Detritus was stripped rapidly from broken, high-relief source areas before weathering processes could destroy unstable framework constituents, as documented by the relatively high content of unstable rock fragments and the high feldspar content in the sandstones investigated. The provenance characteristics indicate that deposition of the sandstones of the Malužiná Formation occurred in a rifted continental margin environment supplied from an uplifted area on a thick continental crust composed of rocks of older fold belts.

Opis:
The type of reservoir rock wettability is one of the most important factors affecting flow of formation fluids in rock pores. It impacts on the characteristics of capillary pressure curves and residual oil saturation, what result in final recovery factor. There are generally, four differ states of wettability for hydrocarbon fields. These are: water wet, oil wet, mixed and fractional. For determination of wettability both quantitative and qualitative methods are implemented. In presented work, the results of wettability laboratory measurement for Ciężkowice sandstone by Amott–Harvey has been shown. Obtained outcomes underline the influence of wettability phenomena on the recovery factor for Carpathian hydrocarbon fields, where Ciężkowice sandstone is the oil bearing formation. The proper understanding of the wettability of reservoir is essential for determining the most efficient way of oil production.

The paper presents a numerical simulation of the development of a catastrophic landslide in a sandstone quarry and methods of reconstructing the quarry to its previous condition from before the landslide. The important objective of the paper is to present the capabilities of the numerical method used in the analysis of the landslide process, namely the Distinct Element Method (DEM). This method is poorly known, though it is capable of solving important geotechnical problems in which massive displacements are modelled. The features of the method are presented on the basis of a case study. Therefore a numerical analysis is carried out to show the performance of DEM in generating a displacement of several dozen meters in the example of a catastrophic landslide that occurred some years ago in a sandstone quarry. This engineering problem makes it possible to describe and analyse the mechanisms, causes and consequences of the landslide.

It is well established that pebbles in the Sudetic Permian conglomerates were derived from the nearby Variscan massifs of upper-crustal composition. However, the provenance of the sand-size grains remains enigmatic. Electron microprobe analyses (EMPAs) of detrital garnet from upper Rotliegend conglomerates and sandstones exposed at Golińsk, the Intra-Sudetic Basin, showed a distinct assemblage dominated by high-pyrope (high-grossular) almandine, typical of high-grade metamorphic rocks, such as high-pressure granulites. These results, coupled with a previously reported population of similar detrital garnet in the stratigraphically equivalent conglomerates and sandstones of the Karkonosze Piedmont Basin, suggest regional input of detrital lower-crustal material. This detritus was derived ultimately either from the Moldanubian Zone of the Bohemian Massif, or from high-grade rocks of the Orlica-Śnieżnik Massif that were exposed in the Carboniferous–Permian. Permian siliciclastic rocks might have covered a large part of the Sudetes. During the Mesozoic and Palaeogene, these rocks might have been recycled further, contributing high-pyrope garnet, as an accessory mineral, into siliciclastic rocks of the Sudetes and their foreland.

It is important to evaluate the deformation and failure of sandstone in the foundation engineering of coast, river bank and lake shore. While the deformation and failure of sandstone is a comprehensive result of energy release and dissipation, and energy release is the internal reason which leads to global failure of the sandstone. The experimental analysis is conducted on the character of energy revolution of the sandstone specimen by rating loading and unloading, and the catastrophe model is followed in analyzing elastic strain energy accumulation and release in rock deformation and failure. The index based on elastic energy release is proposed to assess the rock brittleness. It is found that increasing water content is to relieve energy release and catastrophe failure of the rock specimen, and weakening the capacity of elastic energy storage. The peak and residual values of elastic energy are raised as the confining pressure increases, and the post-peak released energy decreases progressively. The confining pressure strengthens energy storage and inhibits energy release of the rock specimen, and saturation of rock will weaken this inhibit effect. The brittleness index decreases with increasing confining pressure as the rock specimen transforming from brittle to ductile.

The Springdale Sandstone records a large number of reversals of the geomagnetic field. Forty-three percent of the 60 m section investigated showed 25 polarity intervals. These frequent reversals follow the nearly constant normal polarity of the underlying Whitmore Point strata. Comparison of the reversal sequence of the Springdale Sandstone with a core from the Paris Basin suggests that the Springdale Sandstone spans an interval extending possibly from as early as late Hettangian to early-mid Sinemurian time. The paleomagnetic pole calculated from Springdale paleomagnetic directions is statistically identical to that of the underlying Whitmore Point Member of the Moenave Formation, and considerably different from that of the overlying Kayenta Formation. This similarity suggests that the Springdale Sandstone should be retained as a member of the Moenave Formation, not considered part of the Kayenta Formation.

Opis:
he Upper Cretaceous Ajali Sandstone is an extensive stratigraphic unit of the Anambra Basin in southern Nigeria. It consists of friable, white cross-bedded sandstones exhibiting a fining upward sequence. Structures such as bioturbation, planar and herringbone cross beds indicate variability in depositional environment ranging from fluviatile to deltaic. Petrographic and geochemical compositions (major and trace elements) of these sandstones have been investigated to determine their provenance, tectonic setting and weathering conditions. Fifteen sandstone samples examined are rich in quartz but poor in feldspar and lithic fragments. Texturally, the framework grains of the sandstones are fine- to medium-grained, sub-angular to sub-rounded, moderately sorted to poorly sorted, positively skewed and leptokurtic. The sandstones are texturally immature as depicted by their sub-angular edges of grains, but mineralogically mature in terms of high percentage of quartz. The high chemical index of alteration (CIA) values (71.0–99.2%) for these sandstones suggests that they were derived from highly weathered rocks in the source area. The composition of the major oxides in the sandstones revealed that SiO2 (49.1–99.7%), Al2O3 (0.2–30.3%), Fe2O3 (0.4–1.8%) and TiO2 (0.06–3.2%) were the most abundant elements in all sandstone samples indicating a high detrital quartz and clay mineral content. The Al2O3/TiO2 ratios (1.47 to 12.48), Ti/Zr (6.48–18.63) and Zr/Cr (2.24–22.36) suggest that the sandstones were derived from variable basement complex rocks, including some contribution from mafic or ultramafic components. Inferences from the plots of K2O/Na2O versus SiO2 indicated a passive margin tectonic setting for the sandstones. The high loading of CaO and Na2O in more than 50% of the samples is indicative of terrigenous input, mainly in the form of carbonates and silicates. These results are generally consistent with a derivation of the sandstones from adjacent igneous and metamorphic basement complexes (Cameroon–Adamawa highlands and Oban Massif) while the extensive and blanket-like geometry of the Ajali Sandstone is indicative of an excellent reservoir for groundwater in the Anambra Basin.

Opis:
The all available K-Ar data of authigenic illite from Rotliegend aeolian sandstones of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, including the results from six samples examined in the present study, are reviewed in terms of their geological meaning, relation to diagenetic processes occurring in the sandstones, and implications for a petroleum system. The majority of ages fall in the range between 195 and 150 Ma, i.e. they correspond to Jurassic times. The results may be grouped in several time intervals, which are almost identical to those identified for Rotliegend sandstones of central and western Europe, and which are interpreted as pulses of intensive illite growth. The K-Ar data corroborate the long-held assumption that throughout the entire Southern Permian Basin Jurassic illite growth was triggered by the same, large-scale underlying processes, which manifested themselves in enhanced heat flow. These processes may also have caused the expulsion of hydrocarbons from source rocks.

To study creep characteristics of deep rock masses under low-frequency earthquakes and other loads, sandstone and marble samples were used to characterize soft rock and hard rock, respectively. Shear creep tests of anchored rock masses under fatigue loading were carried out by using the graded loading method. A new nonlinear rheological model was constructed to characterize mechanical properties of anchored rock masses under fatigue loading. Creep fatigue curves of soft rock and hard rock have clear creep characteristics including instantaneous, attenuation, steady-state and accelerated creep stages. This work provides new insights into the stability of rock masses.

Opis:
Interesting objects – the rocky forms and waterfall thresholds, built of Yamna Sandstone occur in the vicinity of Skole town. Beside the esthetic positive aspects related the morphological variety of the rocky forms and occurrence of the diversified weathering structures, the objects have a substantial cognitive value encompassing the lithology and sedimentological processes of the thick-bedded turbidites. The sandstone rocky forms usually occur in the groups distributed on slopes and forming so-called rocky towns. Their number and distribution allow observation of the changing structural and textural features both lateral and vertical within the 100-m thick composed profiles. The excellent degree of rocks outcropping, variety of structural and textural features and spectrum of possible observations indicates the high geotouristic potential of the investigated objects.
W okolicy miasta Skole, w obrębie wychodni piaskowca jamneńskiego występują interesujące obiekty geoturystyczne, do których należą piaskowcowe formy skałkowe i progi wodospadowe.

The rocky forms of the Ciężkowice-Rożnów Landscape Park form the remains of the solid cover of the Ciężkowice Sandstone. Deposits in rocky forms represent different types of facies. Numerous and genetically diverse sedimentary structures in the sandstones are typical for a deep-sea flysch environment. Analysis of these well preserved features makes it possible to interpret the paleoenvironment of their sedimentation in the Eocene. These features have also become unusually valuable, in terms of both research methodology, known as sedimentological facies analysis, as well as in popularising geological knowledge.

Soils derived from Awi sandstone formation in Awi, Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State, Nigeria were studied along a toposequence with a view to classifying them taxonomically, assessing their potentials and suggesting appropriate management strategies. Three profiles were dug at the crest, middle slope and lower slope of the landscape. The morphological properties of these soils: colour, soil structure, soil consistence, drainage, boundaries and root inclusions were recorded in the field. These soils were deep (>100 cm), with sandy loam surface texture over sandy clay to sandy clay loam subsurface textures. These soils had hues of 10 YR - 5 YR with sub angular blocky structure and a sticky consistence (wet) and bulk density of 1.0 - 1.7 g/cm3 with total porosity of 22 - 38 %. Soil reactions in H2O were acidic (pH 4.7- 5.8). These soils have Organic Carbon of 14.4 - 38.1 g/kg; total nitrogen 1.2 - 3.3 g/kg; available phosphorus 4.1- 8.3 mg/kg; exchangeable acidity (H+) 0.5 - 11.9 cmol/kg; Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) 2.0 - 6.0 cmol/kg and base saturation 20.0 - 52.5 %. The soils were classified according to the USDA Soil Taxonomy as Typic Kandiudults and correlated as Dystric Acrisols as per FAO- WRB for soil resources. It is recommended that soils fertility management practices should focus on reducing leaching of basic cations from the soils through mulching, planting of cover crops, crop rotation, adoptions of zero tillage as well as planting of acid tolerant crops and application of liming materials to reduce the strong acidity in these soils.

The Hoanh Bo Basin has developed over multiple periods since the Miocene period in association with the tectonic activity of the Chi Linh-Hon Gai and Trung Luong Faults. The basin is filled with Neogene continental sediments, comprising mainly polymictic conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, claystones, and shales. Coarser-grained polymictic deposits predominate along the northern and western margins of the basin, whereas different types of siltstones, claystones, and sandstones occur in its centre, as well as along its southern and eastern parts, toward the Ha Long Bay. The conglomerates and sandstones are composed mainly of quartz and sedimentary rock fragments, and a small amount of mica. Cement is mainly built of iron-oxide, clay or carbonate mud. The source area for the Hoanh Bo Basin sediments was located in the close vicinity of the basin. It was built of strongly weathered rocks of the Hon Gai, Ha Coi, Cat Ba Formations.

A new kind of trace fossil characterized by filled ellipsoidal chambers interconnected by a boxwork of burrows, shafts and tunnels, in different horizontal planes, is observed in the medium-grained fluvial sandstone of the Pliocene Lower Tipam Formation in the Amarpur area of Tripura in northeast India. The chambers have variable dimensions with lengths of 3-16 cm, widths of 3-10 cm and heights of 2-6 cm. Diameters of the connecting tunnels and shafts are 0.8-0.9 cm on average. The traces are considered to be nest systems of social insects. The discovery is noteworthy as far as the geology of Tripura state is concerned, as such chambered traces have not previously been reported from the Indian sub-continent. Morphology of the studied specimens point toward a new ichnospecies, Vondrichnus amarpurensis isp. nov. of the ichnofamily Krausichnidae.

The petrophysical parameters of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks are analysed for the total of samples representing different lithologies (limestones vs. sandstones) as well as for particular stratigraphic intervals (Upper and Lower Cretaceous, Upper Jurassic, Middle and Lower Jurassic, and Palaeozoic). The terrigenous rocks with intergranular porosity and fracture-cavernous carbonate rocks of reefal facies form the best reservoir rocks within the Mesozoic. The terrigenous rocks of fractured and fractured-porous type that are controlled by the fault-block tectonics provide the best Palaeozoic and Ediacaran reservoirs.

Enhanced oil recovery methods can significantly increase recovery from offshore oil reservoirs provided that the appropriate method is selected. Enhanced oil recovery methods aim to recover the remaining original oil in place by applying additional energy sources and minimalize flow resistance in the field. The application of these technologies results in enhancement, or replacement of natural or physical processes of displacement and modifies the composition and physical properties of formation fluids. The use of EOR technologies in offshore environment is limited compared to onshore fields. Constraints imposed by the offshore environment are associated with technical difficulties as well as economic risk. Before choosing the most appropriate EOR method for particular environmental conditions the restrictions associated with: large well spacing, disposal geological description as well as availability and cost of EOR agents, weight and space constrains or high capital cost requirements should be considered. Reservoir lithology is limiting the applicability of specific EOR methods. This paper presents a comprehensive review of EOR projects which are appropriate or possible for sandstone reservoirs containing light-oil in offshore field. The possibilities and limitations of selected methods are introduced.

fter new studies were carried out in the Lopingian Val Gardena Sandstone of northern Italy, in the Recoaro area (Venetian Prealps, NE Italy), the following tetrapod ichnotaxa are identified: cf. Capitosauroides isp., cf. Merifontichnus isp., Pachypes isp., Paradoxichnium isp., and Rynchosauroides isp., probably corresponding to ?parareptile, captorhinid eureptile, pareiasaurid parareptile, archosauromorph neodiapsid, and lacertoid neodiapsid trackmakers, respectively. An undetermined track shows features consistent with possible therapsid producers. These are the first possible records of Merifontichnus and Capitosauroides in the Lopingian (late Permian) and one of the few records of Paradoxichnium worldwide. The paleoecology of the ichnoassociation highlights a relatively high diversity in the floodplain lithofacies, a monospecific association of Rhynchosauroides in distal floodplain/sabkha environments and the occurrence of Paradoxichnium isp. and cf. Capitosauroides only in the lagoon lithofacies, suggesting different habits of the trackmakers. The tetrapod ichnoassociation is characterized by eureptile and parareptile tracks, and differs from the classic Lopingian tetrapod ichnoassociation of the Dolomites mainly because of the absence of chirotheriid and small parareptile ichnotaxa. A comparison of the Italian tetrapod ichnoassociation with other Lopingian non-eolian ichnofaunas suggests a possible preference for marginal marine settings by the archosauromorph and therapsid trackmakers at low-latitudes of Pangaea.

The placoderm sandstone (Emsian, Holy Cross Mountains) exposed in the abandoned quarry at Podłazie Hill was revisited and excavated during fieldwork conducted in 2011-2013. Bone-bearing breccias were identified for the first time at this site and subjected to taphonomic analysis. Vertebrate remains are dominated by heterostracans, while true placoderms compose less than 20% of the total vertebrate assemblage. The high degree of fragmentation of the bones and low degree of abrasion indicate that the remains were reworked and transported before final burial. This is consistent with the mixed character of the bone accumulations, which comprise both open-shelf forms (acanthodians, chondrichthyans) as well as those related to marginal-marine environments (placoderms and sarcopterygians). The bone-bearing succession has been subdivided into five depositional facies attributed to a coastal lagoon influenced by stormy, possibly tidal conditions. The occurrence of the invertebrate trace fossil Ilmenichnus sp. accompanied by Lockeia and Monomorphichnus supports this interpretation.

Opis:
During quarrying, waste stone cake is discharged as industrial waste, and in Japan the amount of cake amounts annually to 50 millions tons. To promote waste recycling, we attempted to convert waste sandstone cake into zeolitic material using alkali fusion. However, calcium causes the synthesis of an undesirable zeolite by interfering in the synthesis of a high functional zeolite. As a means to inhibit this Ca-interference, we studied the effect of adding a chelating agent, EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium dihydrate), on the synthesis of zeolitic material from sandstone cake using alkali fusion. Hydroxysodalite, zeolite-X and zeolite-P can be synthesized from sandstone cake using alkali fusion. With the addition of EDTA, calcium ions in solution were trapped by chelation, and the amount of zeolite-X and zeolite-P increased. A product with a high CEC, which has a high content of zeolite-X, can be obtained. The chelating agent can inhibit Cainterference for zeolite synthesis by Ca-masking, and the product with high content of zeolite-X can be obtained from waste sandstone cake using alkali fusion.

PETROGRAPHIC RESEARCH (STRZELNO MONUMENTS)
SANDSTONE ORIGINS
Opis:
The research note discusses the outcome of petrographic studies relating to five Romanesque stone monuments from Strzelno, featured at the National Museum in Poznan. The research encompassed: - a perpendicular fragment of a column shaft 50 x 24 cm (dep. 64), originating from the post-Premonstratensian church of the Holy Trinity in Strzelno, covered with an ornamental tendril; - a fragment of the shaft of a column with an angel 28 x 28 x 28 cm (dep. 564) from the church of the Holy Trinity; - the head of Christ from the foundation tympanum in the rotunda of St. Prokop, damaged in a fire from 1945 (P. 19); - the head of a statue 22 x 20 x 21 cm (dep. 563), unearthed in the course of archaeological excavations in front of the rotunda of St. Prokop in 1950; - a column capital 40 x 36 x 20 cm (dep. 65) from the church of the Holy Trinity, with acanthus leafs in the corners and a fragment of a lamb. The examined monuments disclosed the presence of two types of sandstone: white quartzose sandstone, used for making the shaft of the column covered with an ornamental tendril, the shaft of a column with an angle, and the head of Christ, as well as subarkose sandstone used for the head of the statue and the column with acanthus leafs. It is difficult to propose an unambiguous origin of the white sandstone which could have been mined in the Warta river valley, e. g. near Konin-Brzezno (Tertiary sandstone), or in the Sudety Mts. in the regions of Zlotoryja, Lwowek Slaski, and Boleslawiec, as well as in Klodzko - between Polanica, Radkow and Krzeszowice (Cretaceous sandstone). The mineral composition of the red sandstones, their colour, and the presence of a calcite-clayey cement indicate a resemblance to the Permian period (Rotliegend) or Triassic sandstone (Buntsandstein) which do not occur in the Polish lowlands, and whose nearest outcroppings are located in the Sudety Mts. Particular attention is drawn to the petrographic similarity of this raw material to the sandstone in the portal of the abbey in Olbin, inserted into the southern nave of the church of St. Mary Magdalene in Wroclaw. The establishment of a connection between those monuments was rendered possible by a petrographic expert study of the abbey portal sandstone conducted by Alfred Majerowicz in 1963. The description contained therein corresponds to the petrography of the red sandstones from Strzelno. This similarity cannot be regarded as accidental since the raw material in question is not universally available. A sculptor could have used a similarly coloured raw material but he was unable to perceive the forms of the microscopic kaolinite crystals and the carbonates between the quartz grains. Consequently, we may conclude that the sandstone was brought over to Strzelno (in a raw form or as a completed work) probably by the same stone-cutters who made the portal for Olbin Abbey.

The role and importance of the types of stone material used at that time are unappreciated, if not downright ignored. I emphasize the fact that the main material used in early-medieval building construction were glacial erratics, sometimes representing up to 98% of the entire building material. Other rocks used in constructing buildings included travertine, sod iron ore, limestone and  gypsum. However, I have devoted a lot of attention to the Miocene quartzite sandstone excavated in the early stages of Polish statehood from a quarry in Brzeźno near Konin. In the summary, I suggest possible time scales for the use of part of the rock material.

There is no consistency in reporting the stone material used to construct the first structures in the early Piast dominion (10–11th century) in Poland. The role and importance of the type of the stone building material used at that time has been underappreciated if not completely ignored. It has been stated that glacial erratics comprise the fundamental rock material used in the early Middle Ages for building, representing up to 98% of construction material. The remaining rocks used in building construction included local calcareous sinter, bog iron ores, Jurassic limestone from the Piechciny-Barcin region and gypsum from a salt dome in the village of Wapno in western Poland, while Miocene sandstone excavated at the inception of the Polish state in the Brzeźno Quarry near Konin has received significant attention. There appear to have been distinct phases of use of the various types of rock material. There was likely a link between the development of tillage and the development of monumental stone architecture from the Middle Ages. Deforestation resulting from the development of agriculture helped expose the glacial erratics used in the stone architecture of the first Piast rulers.

The Royal Route in Warsaw has been the main communication route of the city since its inception. Along it, there are many small and large stone architecture objects made of sandstone with a characteristic light grey colour, originating from the vicinity of Kunów and Szydłowiec in the Holy Cross region. The article presents selected most significant stone objects made of light grey Holy Cross sandstone: numerous ornaments of tenement houses in the Old Town Square and the courtyard of the Royal Castle, the statue of Our Lady of Passau, the Church of the Visitation Sisters (or the Church of the Discalced Carmelites), the sculpture of Jan III Sobieski in the Royal Baths Park and the sarcophagus/mausoleum in Wilanów

Cracow Sandstone Series
Upper Silesian Coal Basin
Opis:
The Cracow Sandstone Series (CSS), consisting mainly of coarse-grained clastic rocks (>75%), form upper lithostratigraphic series of the coal-bearing Carboniferous formations in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). CSS covers the area of 1,500 km2. Thicknes of a formation varies from tens to 1,140 m. Exploitation of coal deposits on industrial scale of production has started since the turn of the XVIII and XIX century. Intensity of water inflows to individual mines ranging from 4.3 to 52.8 m3/min, depends on morphological, geogenic and mining factors. Within the CSS hydrogeological complex typical for sedimentary basins hydrodynamic and hydrogeochemical vertical zoning occurs. Hydrochemical as well as isotope research revealed appearance of varied zones of infiltration, mixed waters and relict brines. Prevailing significance in hydrodynamic conditions forming within the CSS have hydrodynamic barriers: overlying isolating Miocene aquitard and increasing with depth diagenesis of the Carboniferous formation. The mining activity increases the rock permeability and causes the disturbance of the natural hydrodynamic field and hydrogeochemical conditions of the CSS.

Opis:
Sole structures, typically developed on basal bedding surfaces of turbidite sandstones, are commonly used as palaeocurrent indicators and indicators of the current ability to erode. Detailed analysis of types and frequency of sole structures in the 128 m thick succession of Early Oligocene Cergowa Sandstone (Outer Western Carpathians) also shows their potential as an indicator of flow condition during the deposition. The massive and amalgamated sandstones, predominantly containing load casts and minor flutes and grooves with unidirectional orientation, are suggested to be deposited by highly turbulent flow after reaching hydraulic jump behind the topographic obstacle. High range of sole structures in thick and medium thick sandstones, suggesting inferior oblique and reverse flows, implies deposition from density stratified flows where lower, denser part has a tendency to deflect when hit the basin floor obstacle. The upper, less dense part has an ability to come over the obstacle and shows only small scatter in the palaeocurrent direction.

Góry Stołowe to obszar kojarzony z turystyką.
Stołowe Mountains are a popular tourist area. However, mining industry existed there in the past. Radków sandstone has been used in the European architecture from Middle Ages. Almost 70 sites of historic mining activity have been described here as a result of previous studies. Their character is very varied: these are isolated small pits and relatively big quarries or groups of outcrops as well as areas of extraction of rock without a distinct center of exploitation.

The paper presents the results of mechanical tests of three types of rocks from stone mines in Poland. Compression tests of cubic samples, three-point bending tests of beams, bending of beams with notch and testing of tensile strength using the quasi-Brazilian method were performed. Based on the tests, the compressive strength, tensile strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratios were determined. The stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate in mode I were determined from the bending test of the notched beams. The determined values were used as parameters of computer models which are used to verify the authors’ method of predicting the crack propagation in the Abaqus FEA system.

This report presents the results of petrographical and mineralogical (optical microscopy, SEM/EDS) study of xenotime derived from the Upper (Middle?) Cambrian rocks (Wiśniówka Sandstone Fm.) of the abandoned Podwiśniówka mine pit. This is the first work on this mineral from the Holy Cross Mts. The authigenic xenotime occurs primarily as overgrowths around/on zircon in siliciclastic rocks. Moreover, this mineral is characterized by the large size of the overgrowths reaching 50 μm long and 20 μm wide. The presence of pyritecoated zircon/xenotime aggregates indicates that the xenotime formed prior to hydrothermal quartz-pyrite mineralization. The apparent lack of xenotime and vein pyrite in the tuff-bearing series, compared to the other two series displaying hydrothermal signature (pyrite, hematite, nacrite, jarosite), as well as considerable variations of the xenotime overgrowths in size and morphology, and their dominant irregular patchy-zonal microtexture may provide evidence for direct precipitation of this mineral from hydrothermal fluids.

Opis:
TheTumlin Sandstone is an eolian unit of disputable age (Late Permian or Early Triassic), exposed at the north-western border of the Holy Cross Mts., Central Poland. It contains abundant and diversified invertebrate and vertebrate trace fossils. The present paper considers ichno-biodiversity relation of lacertoid tracks and their producers occurring in the considered unit. A neoichnological experiment indicates that the recent lacertoid, Pogona vitticeps can produce morphologically diversified tracks which in fossil record would possibly be ascribed to different ichnogenera. The recorded variability range is qualitatively comparable to that of lacertoid tracks from the Tumlin Sandstone. It is thus possible that morphologically diversified lacertoid ichnogenera from the Tumlin Sandstone were produced by a single species. In consequence, morphologically diversified lacertoid ichnogenera from the Tumlin Sandstone might not be the equivalents of anatomically differentiated animals.

Opis:
Among sites of geomorphological interest in the tableland of the Stołowe Mountains, consisting of clastic sedimentary rocks of Late Cretaceous age, are enigmatic occurrences and clusters of sandstone boulders within plateau levels that are underlain by mudstones and marls. These boulders are allochthonous, having been derived from the quartz sandstone beds that support the upper plateau level and stratigraphically are in excess of 50 m above the altitudinal position of the boulders. Topographic conditions preclude long-distance transport from the escarpment slopes; boulders are hypothesised to be the last remnants of completely degraded outliers (mesas) of the upper plateau. Their present-day altitudinal position is explained by passive ‘settling’ following disintegration of caprock and denudation of the underlying weaker rocks. Two localities are here presented in detail, Łężyckie Skałki and Pustelnik, along with adjacent boulder trains in the valleys incised into the plateau. It is argued that both localities have considerable geoheritage value and both play the role of geosites, although on-site facilities are so far limited. However, the complex history of boulders sets a series of challenges for successful geo-interpretation.

Among the rich material of chondrichthyan microremains from the Indian Cave Sandstone (Upper Pennsylvanian, Gzhelian) near Peru, Nebraska, USA, housed at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, there occur almost sixty teeth representing Euselachii. They belong to at least seven species, presenting various types of heterodonty. Two new species are described, viz. Ossianodus nebraskensis gen. et sp. nov., whose dentition is similar to that of certain Mesozoic hybodonts, and Sphenacanthus tenuis sp. nov. with minute teeth of protacrodont design. Most of the euselachian teeth served to crush or grind prey, and some had the potential to clutch, but cutting teeth are absent from the fauna.

The Indian Cave Sandstone (Upper Pennsylvanian, Gzhelian) from the area of Peru, Nebraska, USA, has yielded numerous isolated chondrichthyan remains and among them teeth and dermal denticles of the Symmoriiformes Zangerl, 1981. Two tooth-based taxa were identified: a falcatid Denaea saltsmani Ginter and Hansen, 2010, and a new species of Stethacanthus Newberry, 1889, S. concavus sp. nov. In addition, there occur a few long, monocuspid tooth-like denticles, similar to those observed in Cobelodus Zangerl, 1973, probably representing the head cover or the spine-brush complex. A review of the available information on the fossil record of Symmoriiformes has revealed that the group existed from the Late Devonian (Famennian) till the end of the Middle Permian (Capitanian).

The article presents various forms of deterioration in sandstone panels of the Collegium Iuridicum building in Poznań. The facade of this building is exposed to various urban and rural pollutants, which have a very significant influence on the weathering of the stone. The climatic conditions in which the test building is located and structure of the stone are also an important factors of the weathering. They can significantly accelerate the stone destruction processes. Based on the ICOMOS guidelines, deterioration forms were described and classified in macro and micro scales. For this purpose, optical, cathodoluminescence and scanning microscopy with EDS analyser were used. As a result of the research, secondary mineralization and the presence of numerous elements in the black crusts were identified. They are directly related to polluted air and the combustion of solid fuels. The identified elements include: Na, Mg, Al, Ca, P, K, S, Hg, Pb, Fe, Ti, Sc, Ni, Br, Mo, Zn, Mn, gypsum, calcite, fly ash particle.

Opis:
Sandstones are a commonly used stone in the architecture of Poznań. They are constantly affected by deterioration processes. This is mainly linked to pollution, which is a consequence of the city development. This is manifested, among others, by the emission of harmful substances from traffic routes, as well as the combustion of solid fuels in the city centre. The research is focused on the sandstone elevation of one of the monuments of the Royal-Imperial Route in Poznań - the current building of the University of Economics and Business in Poznań dated to the beginning of the 20th century. The research was carried out both -on a macro- and microscale. Taking into account the ICOMOS glossary (International Council on Monuments and Sites), the types of damage on the façade on a macroscale were classified. The most common problem was the black crust on the surface of stone panels. Thanks to the use of optical, scanning and cathodoluminescence microscopy, it was also possible to analyse various types of contaminants on a microscale that appear in the building elevation. As a result of the research, dust particles, metals such as lead, tin, zinc, iron, and sulphur and nitrogen compounds that were part of dust particles were found. Deterioration of the façade caused by soiling derived from traffic-related particulate matter, deposition of nitrates from exhaust and other emission sources may seriously impact natural building stones.

Opis:
Three objects were studied within a project aimed at investigation of stones used in the Romanesque edifices in the vicinity of Kraków, and continued since 2019. These are the churches in Dziekanowice (21 km SE of Kraków) and in Czchów (58 km SE of Kraków), and a clergy house in Morawica (13 W of the Kraków city centre). The church in Dziekanowice is relatively completely and well preserved, while the only Romanesque remnants of the church in Czchów are those reused in the Gothic church. It is a clergy house in Morawica (a former castle), whose walls contain Romanesque fragments. Two former edifices are built of the Istebna sandstone (Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene), quarried from the local flysch bedrock. Fine-grained, grey-yellowish stone dominates. It is soft and easily workable due to argillaceous binder (matrix). The stone blocks are precisely shaped and well fitted. Romanesque remnants of the clergy house in Morawica are con- structed predominantly of limestone, also of local origin. Only a fragment of the NW wall is built of the Istebna sandstone. This fragment is probably a part of the butress supporting the NW wall. The study shows that stonemasons and builders of that time had good skills of selecting and applying proper stone blocks for particular purposes. Blocks used in load-bearing structures were exceptionally well shaped and fitted. On the other hand, those skills varied. The frieze from the Romanesque church in Czchów is rather primitive. The size of limestone blocks used in the clergy house in Morawica is strikingly similar to those of various Romanesque edifices in Kraków. It seems, therefore, that those blocks could have been quarried and shaped in quarries located in the city, where the masonry “industry” was well developed. Larger, irregular blocks, used as foundations and filler in the “opus emplectum” type walls were probably quarried on site. Moreover, stones used in more eminent edifices (churches, castles) were probably more carefully selected. The Morawica castle (clergy house) and many churches in Kraków were built of limestone blocks without cherts.

Glass recycling uses less energy than manufacturing glass from sand, lime and soda. Every metric ton of waste glass recycled into new items saves 315 additional kilograms of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere during the creation of new glass. Glass wastes, which can be recycled not are allowed to contain: monitors, window glass: car glass, mirrors, lamps, crystal articles, ceramics, glass decorative units, ceramic waste of china, breakage, soil, metals, glass from kinescope lamps. The results of investigations were introduced over possibility of utilization of glass wastes which can not be used as standard glass breakage. Opis:
Dotychczasowe próby opisania zależności pomiędzy porowatością mierzoną w ramach rutynowych badań petrofizycznych a ściśliwością porową doprowadziły do powstania szeregu modeli umożliwiających oszacowanie współczynnika ściśliwości porowej. Doprowadziło to do powstawania coraz większej liczby modeli o różnym przeznaczeniu. Następnie przeprowadzono badanie ściśliwości porowej i wykonano analizę zależności pomiędzy ściśliwością a porowatością.
The pore compressibility of rocks is a crucial parameters used in studying hydrocarbon deposits. Inaccurate calculations of this parameter, along with the initial porosity of reservoir rocks under geostatic pressure conditions, can result in errors when estimating the capacity and potential scale of hydrocarbon accumulation. Owing to the challenges associated with conducting these measurements and their time-consuming nature, for more than fifty years, several authors have endeavoured to describe the relationship between the initial porosity measured from the obtained cores in surface conditions and the pore compressibility. These efforts led to the development of many models that allow for the calculation of the pore compressibility coefficient using the initial porosity as a basis. Unfortunately, during the course of these studies, it became evident that the results derived from models cannot substitute laboratory tests but only serve as an auxiliary tool. In addition, the results vary depending on the lithology, and the pressures applied during testing. This has led to the creation of an increasing number of models for various purposes. In the following article, multiple well-known sandstone models were used and compared with laboratory test findings. Finally, a new model was formulated, tailored to the examined rock samples. The study focused on 20 samples of sandstones and heteroliths sourced from the Carpathian Foredeep with a porosity spectrum ranging from a few to twenty percent. The samples were tested to assess their petrophysical characteristics, including porosity and permeability alongside a petrographic analysis. Then, pore compressibility tests were conducted, and an examination of the correlation between compressibility and porosity was carried out. After obtaining the experimental data, a comparatice analysis was performed, contrasting the obtained results with those derived from existing literature models. As a result of a statistical analysis, the best model was identified and subsequently adjusted using the R language and the Posit environment to optimize its alignment with the laboratory data. This resulted in the creation of a model that, in contrast to existing models, allows for significantly enhanced accuracy in predicting the pore compressibility coefficient for selected sandstones and heteroliths originating from the Carpathian Foredeep.

Opis:
Blocky calcite veins filling joints have been studied in sandstones. Calcite veins and host sandstones were sampled in Raca Unit (exposure Gruszowiec) and in Siary Unit (exposures Ropica Górna 1 and Ropica Górna 2). The aim of these studies was to define relationship between blocky calcite in veins and progress of sandstone induration. In the paper, petrographic study was supplemented by chemical analyses and cathodoluminescence observations. Studied blocky calcites show different Fe contents. Intensity of blocky calcite luminescence shows a good correlation with Mn2+ contents. Based on results of grain-contact analysis in sandstones and on relationship between veins and cement in sandstones as well as framework grains, it is concluded that blocky calcite veins were formed in rocks showing different stage of induration. Microstructures and differentiation in Fe contents in blocky calcite may be used as indicators of direction filling in tectonic fractures.

Opis:
Stone has been used in architecture since Antiquity. The processes of its deterioration in different buildings have always been associated with natural processes of its weathering (physical, chemical, biological). However, this situation has changed over centuries. Currently, air pollution (mainly in urbanised areas) has a significant impact on the accelerated weathering of stone monuments. The research presented in this paper concerns the deterioration of stone facade of the 19th century building of the National Archive in Poznań, where the latest factor (contemporary air pollution) plays the greatest role. Based on the ICOMOS glossary, selected forms of deterioration were described and classified in macro and micro scales. For this purpose, optical and scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used. As a result of the research, lichen species composition and secondary mineralisation in the black crust were identified. Elements, such as: barium, zinc, lead, and iron, which were detected on the black crust, were directly related to anthropogenic pollution caused mainly by combustion and low emissions.

Opis:
We describe and interpret Undichna septemsulcata isp. nov., from the fluvial Old Red Sandstone deposits of the Early Devonian Wood Bay Formation, of Northern Spitsbergen (Svalbard). Its delicate scratch pattern, comprising one unpaired median groove and three pairs of lateral grooves, all with a regular in−phase sinusoidal wave pattern of equal wavelength, allow the reconstruction of the number, position and relative spacing of the fins. The comparatively high−amplitude median groove is attributed to the main propelling action of the tail or caudal fin, the inner pair of the lateral grooves to the action of the pelvic fins, and the low−amplitude outer set of duplicate grooves to bifurcated pectoral fins, respectively. The in−phase geometric pattern is explained by a distance between the unpaired fin (caudal or anal fin) to the pectoral fins corresponding to one wavelength and a position of the pelvic fins half way in between. The direction of movement and the mode of locomotion of the trace maker (a carangiform to ostraciiform type) are deduced. This analysis is leading to an acanthodian (possibly Diplacanthus) as the most probable trace maker. By being Pragian or early Emsian (Early Devonian) in age, according to vertebrate and palynomorph biostratigraphy, these specimens are among the world’s oldest trace fossils made by a vertebrate.

Opis:
In this paper, Liassic and Triassic sandstone quarries of the Kunów surroundings were described as future geotourist attractions within the planned Kamienna Valley Geopark. The history of sandstone excavation from medieval ages to the contemporary period and their usage in regional/local, sacral, monumental, defense as well as industrial architecture were included. Representative, geological, geomorphological and tourist attractions of the quarries and their surroundings were described, marked out and connected in order to create valuable educational and landscape geotourist trail. After implementation of the proper tourist infrastructure, especially accommodation, as well as undertaking marketing efforts in order to promote the centuries-old quarrying centre, Kunów has a chance to become another, besides Jura Park Bałtów and Krzemionki flint mine, very important geoeducational and recreational centre within the north-eastern margin of the Holy Cross Mts.
