The article explores the problem of the representation of Venice in Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz’s poetry, starting from the short series “Tram Tickets,” from the mid-1920s, to the masterful “Ode on the Destruction of Venice,” a true farewell and poetic testament of the writer. This study seeks to define the characteristics of the city’s genius loci, tracing the relationships between romantic historicism, perceptual poetics, and the decadent aestheticism of Iwaszkiewicz. For the poet, Venice constituted a complex palimpsest where every added word necessarily had to be negotiated with a complex and cumbersome tradition of texts and images; every attempt to define the nature of the city implied a Sisyphean effort to find a pure and non-conditioned look. For this reason, he was convinced that Venice could be described only indirectly, through the rhetorical tools—similes, synaesthesia, metaphors —offered by poetic language. Iwaszkiewicz’s representation of Venice appears to be rooted in particular in the modernist tradition and in its complex network of cultural and symbolic references. The essay highlights the influence of John Keats and Aleksandr Blok, as well as the specific interpretation of the figures of Endymion and Salome, symbols of eternal youth and beauty, the myths on which the poetics of the Polish writer was based. Among all the cities that are reflected in Iwaszkiewicz’s works, Venice is the one that best expresses his conception of the crisis of European civilisation, awareness of the end of a historical period, and hope of a future palingenesis.

Opis:
Undoubtedly, Salome, Herod the Great’s sister was one of the most prominent women figures in the Herodian dynasty. Her personality had a strong influence over the events during the historie period from 37 to 4 B.C. With few exceptional cases, she always loyally supported her brother helping him out many times in difficult situations. She was very successful at discovering plots against Herod the Great. Unfortunately, she was also a skillful intriguer who removed inconvenient people ruthlessly out of her way. The analysis of her deeds leads to the conclusion that her main goal, apart from securing her brother’s wellbeing, was a fight with the  asmonean dynasty, and its most conspicuous manifestation was the conflict with Mariamme I, Herod’s wife. The fact was that Salome had a strong personality and she was capable of confronting Herod the Great’s will, which was the case with the planned marriage with Syllaeus. Salome is even morę fascinating for the historian because she evades any established criteria of evaluation and she may not be viewed exclusively in a negative or positive perspective.

Opis:
Fundacja Audiodeskrypcja (Audio Description Foundation), based in Białystok, has for years implemented the ‘iSztuka’ (iArt) project to present works of art to the blind and visually impaired. As a result of a joint effort of art historians, audio description (AD) narrators, and people with visual impairments, several hundred of contextual analyses and audio descriptions of works of art have been prepared and shared online. This paper focuses on problems faced by AD narrators who present works of art. How to talk about a work of art to help a blind person feel it and understand its social and historical context? What motivates the decision to highlight certain aspects and omit others? Gustave Moreau’s Salome dancing before Herod (Tattooed Salome) is used as a pretext for the unfolding analysis of the audio description language, with its limitations and possibilities. This painting was included in the canon of works prepared as part of the ‘iSztuka’ project. Rich in colour nuances, Salome is a complex work, both in terms of the form and iconography, carrying dozens of significant motifs. It allows the AD narrators to show their talents when capturing the specific nature of the epoch in the description and analysis of iconography. However, it also poses a challenge. How to talk about Salome to adequately create its ‘spoken’ image, capture details that build a network of cultural meanings and references, and reflect the atmosphere of the work and the period, while adapting the description to the visitors’ ability of perception?

Opis:
The present article engages with the eponymous character of Oscar Wilde’s Salomé and focuses on her subversion of the patriarchal rules, and on her attempts at seducing the prophet Jokanaan. Wilde’s Salomé becomes “an erotic symbol of daring, transgression, and perversity” (Sloan 112). She wants to look at Jokanaan, as well as to be touched by him and openly states her great desire for him, using the imagery taken from the biblical Song of Songs to express her passion. Moreover, the Princess skillfully adopts and reverses the male gaze to manipulate others and go beyond the patriarchal constraints at Herod’s court. She becomes aware that the only way to reach her goals is to look actively and evade being a mere object of the male gaze. The article shows that the imagery employed in the eponymous character’s speeches contributes to her portrayal as a seductress, also accentuating her rebellion, and analyzes how the Princess transgresses the patriarchal constraints through appropriating the male gaze.

The death of John the Baptist is the result of Salome’s dance in the Bible. In the 2nd part of the poem Three Gazes into an Opal by Georg Trakl and in the poem Veil Dance by Günter Grass the image of Salome is evoked by veils which are identifi cation marks of that fi gure in the drama Salome by Oscar Wilde. The dance of a woman in both poems is not connected with death any more but with life – with the return into mother’s womb in the text by Trakl and with the entrance to the art’s womb in the text by Grass.
