Opis:
The article presents the results of research from the Mokrzeszów site in the Sudetic Foreland. Lithopetrographic and sedimentological analyses of sediments from the Middle Polish Glaciations (Early Saalian, Odranian, MIS6) in this area indicate the overrepresentation (90–95%) of large Scandinavian erratics. The deposits, representing a repetitive sequence of Gp-Gms-Sp-Sh/Sr(Dmm) lithofacies, accumulated during at least two episodes of glacial outburst floods and six sedimentary cycles. High-energy flows are estimated for the Gms and Gp facies at about 5 m∙s−1 and low-energy flows indicate 0.8 m∙s−1 for the Sp/Sh/Sr facies, to the lack of flow (Fm). The sedimentary sequences confirm the existence of a fan, which may have originated as a subaqueous steep coarse-grained fan in glacial-flow-lake-outburst floods that formed between the ice sheet front and the morphotectonic edge of the Sudetic Marginal Fault line and within the Roztoka-Mokrzeszów Graben, or as an aerial, piedmont fan on the Sudetic Marginal Fault edge. The sediments show discontinuous deformations – gently sloping faults and fractures from glacioisostatic stresses. The fault activity is probably related to the reactivation of the faults due to ice loading during or after the older Saalian glaciation.

Opis:
We describe the penultimate glacial – last interglacial transition from the one of the numerous palaeolake successions in central Poland, which have yielded many documented Eemian and Early Weichselian floral records. In the new profile, Parchliny 2016, the lacustrine deposits were analysed lithologically, botanically, zoologically, and geochemically, providing new data that illustrate the environmental transition from the Late Saalian (MIS 6a) to the Eemian interglacial (MIS 5e). Five phases of palaeolake development have been distinguished. The first phase was related to the rapid melting of a dead ice block buried in the tills to form a lake. The second phase documented a Late Saalian initial succession, with the dominance of open steppe communities (Stadial 1), followed by a third phase with gradual increasing density of vegetation, the spread of boreal forests (Zeifen interstadial) and further increase in open communities and the retreat of pine (Kattegat stadial). The fourth phase reflected the beginning of Eemian interglacial by the expansion of pioneering birch-pine and purely birch forests and an increasing proportion of deciduous trees, including oak (Vth phase). Diatom, cladoceran and geochemical studies indicate at least two stages of lake development. The first stage (Late Saalian) was of an open lake (2–4 m deep), in relatively cold conditions and nutrient-poor water with the lowest amounts of organic carbon and nitrogen. The second stage (Eemian interglacial), shows warmer, shallower conditions in which the lake’s primary production increased, the water was well oxygenated, and there were more trophic levels.

Opis:
Petrographic studies covered 20-60 mm coarse gravel and 4-10 mm medium-grained fractions of two till horizons (units ŁS II and ŁS IV) and two beds of sand-gravelly-outwash deposits(units ŁS I and ŁS III) associated with the Odra Glaciation (MIS6) in Łubienica-Superunki on the North Mazovian Lowland. Regardless of the facies type and grain sise, crystalline rocks dominate over all other petrographic groups in all samples. The percentage of crystalline rocks is greater among coarse gravel (average 74.7%) than among medium-grain gravel (average 67.8%). The share of carbonate rocks is limited only to the both lower units ŁS I and ŁS II. The upper units (ŁS III and ŁS IV) are deprived of these rocks, both in the medium and coarse gravel fraction. Sandstones, presented in all samples, were in the range of 5-20%. From the other petrographic groups, individual chalk limestones clasts, dolomites, flints and quartz grains were identified in the material. The indicator erratics were identified in all four units. Their percentage content stands for 10-18% of the total sample of coarse-grained fraction. Among them, the most common were the erratics derived from the Åland Islands, and then from the area of south-eastern Sweden (Smaland) and from Dalarna in central Sweden. Amongst the erratics with limited indicator significance, Lower Paleozoic limestones and Jotnian sandstones were most frequent. Single fragments of Ordovician red and Paleoporella limestone were present. These rocks, including the Lower Paleozoic grey limestone, occurred only in thelowerunits(ŁS I and ŁS II). The results of the research suggest that the two lower sediment units should be correlated with a ice-sheet advance (Middle Polish Complex, Odranian Stadial?), and the two upper ones - with a separate, subsequent advancement (Wartanian?). The paper is another methodological contribution to the consideration of abandoning the tedious testing of glacial till and focusing on a much faster petrographic analysis of fluvioglacial sediments associated with the same ice sheet. This is demonstrated by the comparable results of the petrographic analysis of short transport outwash sediments and till from a single glacial period.

Opis:
The study presents the problem of complex genesis of eskers formed in N-channels on the example of an esker located near Tosie in east-central Poland. The lithofacies analysis revealed a high diversity of structural and textural characteristics of sediments in this form. The esker consists of three sedimentation units. Coarse sediments of the esker core were deposited in the subenvironment of a subglacial tunnel, as an effect of bedforms migration under hydrostatic pressure. Opening of the tunnel resulted in the forming of an open crevasse, in which the cover of the esker core sediments was accumulated. These deposits recorded a significant variability of flow energy and sedimentation mechanisms, which indicates a strong influence of the ice-sheet ablation dynamics. During the final deglaciation stage, a part of the esker was covered with diamicton. Numerous soft-sediment deformation structures were identified within the esker. The sediments were dislocated vertically to the elevation of more than 8 metres. They constitute the record of buried dead-ice masses melting in the esker core sediments. Melting of the masses resulted in vertical displacement of sediments and formation of "the dead-ice structure". The complexity of esker genesis is characteristic of postglacial areas in Poland, where most eskers were formed in subglacial N-channels. Numerous research results confirm a considerably more frequent occurrence of the facies sequence of subglacial tunnel and open crevasse in eskers formed in N-channels than R-channels. This is indicated by a much greater dissimilarity of processes during different stages of esker formation on soft bed and solid substratum.
Badania ukazują problem złożoności genezy ozów powstających w tunelach typu N na przykładzie ozu okolic Tosi w środkowo- -wschodniej Polsce. Analiza litofacjalna wykazała duże zróżnicowanie strukturalnych i teksturalnych cech osadów tworzących formę.

Opis:
In the stratigraphic division of the Saalian (Middle Pleistocene) in Europe, the Wartanian cold period has the rank of a stadial of the Odranian Glaciation, correlated with MIS 6. The authors demonstrate the higher rank of this cold period, on the basis of an analysis of the sedimentary succession in eastern Poland, at an exposure of the terminal moraine of the Wartanian ice sheet. At the Wólka Zagórna site, three stratigraphic units were distinguished: A (lower glacigenic deposits – glaciofluvial deposits and subglacial till), A/B (fossil soil of lessivé type), B and C (a periglacial horizon with deflation pavement, involutions, frost-wedge structures and upper glaciofluvial deposits and flow till, with ice-wedge casts). Two distinct periods of climatic cooling, associated with the youngest Saalian ice sheets, were recorded in this succession in E Poland: Odranian (unit A, an ice-sheet transgression marked by the deposition of glaciofluvial deposits dated as 365–226 ka, ending with the deposition of subglacial till), and Wartanian (units B and C, an ice sheet transgression marked by development of a periglacial zone, dated as 180–126 ka, and then deposition of glacigenic sediments at the front of the ice sheet and formation of a marginal moraine). Each of these periods of ice-sheet transgression occurred at a different time (in the MIS 8 and MIS 6 positions) and were separated by a warm period. It is documented by unit A/B – a fossil soil with a very well developed Bt horizon – which attests to its formation in an illuviation process beneath a complex of mixed forests during an interstadial warming that occurred in MIS 7. From this palaeoclimatic reconstruction, it is inferred that the Wartanian cold period should be viewed as a separate glaciation in MIS 6 and the Odranian period should be assigned to MIS 8 in the stratigraphic schema of the Quaternary.

Opis:
The subject of the analysis was a tunnel valley, weakly outlined in the landscape, located in central Poland, between Łódź and the Pilica valley to the west of Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The Miazga and lower Wolbórka flow along this valley. It is a 45-kilometre-long landform, mostly buried, partially covered with fluvial, slope and aeolian sediments, developed on a substratum characterised by varied palaeorelief and lithology. Sediments, which fill the valley, have variable thickness (10-100 m) and a non-flattened bottom gradient line, which indicates the possibility of water flow under hydrostatic pressure in a tunnel valley. Several segments of the channel cut into the Quaternary background. The filling consists mostly of glaciofluvial shallow braided rivers with average to low flow energy. In sedimentological terms, the deposits show significant similarity to the material of glaciofluvial kames found in the Łódź region. The authors believe there is a link between the accumulation in the tunnel valley and a particular variety of areal deglaciation, which was responsible for the formation of the fairly unvarying glacial relief. In outcrops in Łaznowska Wola, including the ones located in a hill that had been previously interpreted as an esker, some intrusive diapiric structures were documented, which reached the land surface. Thesefolded and locally disjunctive disturbances provide evidence for deformational origin of the hill.

Glacial erratics of the Oslo region are only occasionally found in Poland. This is because the Norwegian Channel ice stream did not reach this area. Recently a few specimens of rocks representing Oslo region have been found at the Owczary site (north-western Poland), what raised questions regarding the relative age of the deposits, as well as the depositional history of the erratics. The questions were addressed using lithofacies analysis, as well as structural and textural analyses, combined with clast petrography (medium and coarse gravel). Clast petrography analysis revealed that the deposits containing rocks of the Oslo region are of the late Saalian age (Warthe), though some evidence suggest the early Saalian age (Drenthe).

Opis:
The palaeogeographical reconstruction of the deglaciation process in NE Poland during the Odranian Glaciation Wartanian Stadial (Saale MIS 6) is based mainly on the analysis of glacial morpholineaments, performed using the GIS programs that provide us with better understanding of the glacial landscape evolution, spatial reconstruction of glacial processes, and postglacial landscape development. Analysis of postglacial morpholineaments was carried out based on the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) as well as geological, geomorphological and topographic maps. It resulted in the delimitation of visible linear postglacial landforms, their identification and classification, and the determination of their genetic and chronological relations. Directions of the lineaments were determined through quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was applied to determine the spatial and temporal sequence of events, directions of ice movement and its range. Two glacial lobes, Biebrza and Neman, existed in the north-western part of the Białystok Plateau and Sokółka Hills during the last glacial advance. The lobed nature of the ice sheet can be confirmed by field data collected from, e.g., sites in Knyszewicze, and by topographic analysis of Quaternary sediments, combined with their thickness and genesis. The obtained reconstruction of the last glacial advance and retreat in the study area can be used in further regional discussions on the character and dynamics of the last glaciation in this region.

Artykuł prezentuje najnowsze wyniki badań prowadzonych nad genezą rzeźby glacjalnej i dynamiką strefy marginalnej lądolodu warty w słabo dotychczas rozpoznanym obszarze międzyrzecza Krzny i Bugu we wschodniej Polsce.
The paper presents the latest results of research on genesis of glacial relief and dynamics of the younger Saalian ice sheet in the marginal zone in poorly recognized area of the interfluve of the Krzna and Bug rivers in eastern Poland. The presented model is significantly different from those interpretations of the relief genesis in this area, presenting ice-margin stabilization stage and then areal recession. In the light of detailed morphological, geological and structural research, the younger Saalian ice sheet was characterized by differentiated dynamics of ice lobes, both during transgression and recession. A comparison with the latest results of research on area between Piotrków Trybunalski, Radomsko and Przedbórz, the notion on presence of regional lobes in the marginal zone of the younger Saalian ice sheet and their differentiated (conditioned by morphology and lithology of pre-Saalian substrate) dynamics is also actual in central Poland.

Fluvial sediments has been recorded in three boreholes near Nowy Tomyśl, western Poland (Wola Jabłońska, Cicha Góra, Laski). Wola Jabłońska profile contains organic and fluvial deposits. This series has been formally named the Laski Formation. The fluvial sediments fill deep palaeovalley (40–50 m). They overlie the Dopiewiec till (Early Saalian, Odranian) and are overlain by three late Saalian (Wartanian) tills: Karolewo, Kopaszewko and Ujście. The fluvial suite was deposited mainly in periglacial environment, with strongly developed aeolian processes in the valley. However, during the optimal part of the period the aeolian processe almost completely ceased. The uppermost part of the suite exhibit suggests that deposition took place at the front of an advancing ice-sheet (high aggradation rate, admixtures of glacial derived material). The Laski Formation deposits may represent a fragment of pre-Warta/ Prosna palaeovalley. The organic sediments from Wola Jabłońska represent the climatic optimum of the interglacial and the early stages of the succeeding cold period. The picture of vegetation is characterized by spruce-pine forest with common alder and small admixtures of deciduous trees at the climatic optimum. Among local aquatic vegetation, the most characteristic is the occurrence of pollen and seeds of Trapa natans; a species hither noticed only in the interglacial successions. Climatic conditions that time were temperate and humid. The flora of Wola Jabłońska have features that resemble the forest communities at Bełchatów profiles in central Poland which was determined as the Pilica Interstadial, currently named as the Lublinian Interglacial. However, the profile from Wola Jabłońska cannot be unequivocally ascribed to this interglacial period, since the palynostratigraphic and geologic position of its vegetation succession is difficult to determine.

Opis:
There is evidence, hitherto often denied, for the ice marginal features, including the end moraine hills along the Silesian Rampart, SW Poland. These end moraines are attributed to the regional advance of the Wartanian ice sheet into its maximum position, which is also marked by subglacial till bed. The end moraine hills are located on the northern slopes of the Silesian Rampart and they are very rare, partly due to subsequent erosion, but mainly due to conditions not favourable for a remarkable proglacial accumulation. The Wartanian end moraines of southwestern Poland possess several features that suggest that they are end moraines with dominant waterlain, stratified sediments. They are interpreted as alluvial fans, where the ice margin is represented by a 'scarp'. They have semi-conical form, often plano-convex geometry and an average distal slope of 2-25°. These fans are equivalent to sheetflow-dominated or 'humid' alluvial fans in non-glacial environments. Sedimentary sequences of the end moraines consist mainly of coarse-grained material, with boulders up to 1.8 m in diameter, with typical sediments of 'proximal fan' with a highly pulsatory water discharge. The formation of the end moraine followed the formation of a proglacial lake and strong erosion after its drainage. The end moraine was formed during oscillation of the ice margin that resulted in local glaciotectonic deformation of the end moraine fan sediments (push) and a set of parallel hills, with successive younger alluvial fans (retreat).

Opis:
The definition of glaciotectonics to include both the effects of glaciodynamic processes and the effects of glacioisostatic processes has been generally accepted. In Poland, the glaciotectonic style of the Wartian zone is one of the most distinctive features of the Saalian area; glaciotectonic symptoms are numerous in the western part, but disappear in the east. Such a division extends beyond the Polish borders - as continuous thrust ridges in the west and as a sporadic phenomenon in the east. Attention is drawn to the relationships between geological structure and morphological features; they include such cases as : a direct reflection of thrusts in convex land forms, low-relief areas and relief inversion (in relation to the structure). Much importance has been attached to the marginal zone of the Łódź Plateau in Middle Poland. This paper reviews the main genetic hypotheses which, usually, are based on the mechanism, rather than palaeogeographical conditions. Despite much discussion, several problems remain, e.g.: -   why, allowing that the mechanism was similar, are there such regional differences; -   why are the marginal zone of the Warta Stadial and the western part of Europe so well endowed in this respect; -   could palaeoclimatic conditions (different patterns of glaciation and déglaciation), and could postglacial vertical compensatory movements have conditioned the regional variation?
