Terror Menagement Theory was published by Jeff Greenberg, Sheldon Solomon, Tom Pyszczynski and others in 1997. Since that time a lot of followers have been continuing their work and checking the assumptions of this theory. In the center of it, there is an assumption that the awareness of death organizes our existential experience in every-day life. This consciousness is painful as the human being has created mechanisms buffering this pain. There are parents for children and one’s own culture for adults. The role of one’s one culture is fundamental for the forming of self-esteem and positive adaptation to social environment and the reduction of the pain related to the death consciousness. One’s own culture gives the mental image, which means to be the „good person”, teaches scenarios and recopies how to act and to cope with the fact of the finitude of a person. One’s own culture gives the standards to create a self image, as a consequence the level of self- esteem, effectiveness, the control of the environment, vitality of the person and, as a result, perseverance in aiming to the tasks makes the person less insensitive to pain and stress. All these symptoms of good adaptation are enhanced by other members of one’s own group. Sharing the same concepts of social reality, especially stereotypes and prejudices, makes one’s social adaptation satisfactory and minimizes the fear of death. In the context of TMT, the reaction of Polish society to Smolensk’s catastrophe (10.IV. 2010) can be analyzed. We see in many investigations that the attitude to one’s own and to strangers is differentiated depending on the impact of mortality and it changes as time passes. Now, as for the fragmentation of the culture, each of us has a problem with consistency of one’s own personality. Sociologists (e.g. Z. Bauman) talked about fragmented identity; inconsistency of personality makes belonging to one’s own culture more and more important. There are four important issues in the reduction of the death fear effect: 1. Religion; 2. High self-esteem; 3. Democratic personality; 4. Close relations with people (see: Stockholm syndrome). TMT is a challenge in the context of the divide between one’s own and stranger and it is much more difficult to reduce than we have considered earlier.

Twierdzenie, iż istnienie obcego i niepoznanego jest podstawą i budulcem antropologii oraz współczesnego kulturoznawstwa zostaje w artykule poparte dziesiątkami przykładów z kręgu kultury polskiej i amerykańskiej. Rozważania na temat przekształceń znaczeniowych związanych z obcym skupiają się w końcu wokół Smutku tropików, gdzie Lévi-Strauss prowadzi narrację ustanawiającą odmienność przestrzenną i czasową w centrum zainteresowań badawczych. Tekst bada jednak przede wszystkim transformacje, niekonsekwencje i zmiany wyobrażeń związanych z figurami konkretnych Obcych. Stara się na przykład wykazać, że początkowo Indianie uznawani byli przez Europejczyków za istoty niegodne miana ludzi, lecz tendencja ta uległa całkowitemu przekształceniu, aż po kreację mitu dobrego, szlachetnego i mistycznego autochtona.
An analysis of the meeting appears together with deliberations considering the dialog philosophy and usually regards interpersonal relations: “man – man” or “God – man”. The most important trend of this reflection have its root in thinkers like Martin Buber or Franz Rosenzweig and later in Emmanuel Levinas. Their contemplation, confronted with the content of Tristes Tropiques and ethnographic procedures of Lévi-Strauss, creates surprising contexts. A similarities emerge, mainly in the ethic field, in the attitude of the researcher and in some elements of meetings, where different relations between their entities appear. It turns out that unveiling the structure and the mechanism doesn’t have to be identified beforehand with taking away an object of the research, with insight. Speech and free will of the other let them speak to me and become silent.

Prezentowany poniżej tekst dotyczy analiz światopoglądu w zakresie konceptu Inności młodego pokolenia Polaków. Poddano analizie wypowiedzi studentów. Przedmiotem analiz jest obszar kategoryzacji Inności w zakresie motywów, założeń i intencji. Za pomocą metody badawczej zogniskowanego wywiadu grupowego zebrano opinie, które analizowano w kierunku założeń i kategoryzacji czynionych przez badanych. Kluczem operacjonalizacji danych zebranych w procesie postępowania badawczego nie jest analiza treści wyrażanych opinii ale przewidywanie kategorii mentalnych organizujących myślenie i decyzje, budujące ich stosunek do imigrantów. Podłożem teoretycznym przeprowadzonych badań jest teoria standardu kulturowego Krzysztofa J. Broziego oraz teoria kontaktu międzykulturowego.
The following text deals with analyses of the worldview regarding the concept of the Otherness of the young generation of Poles. Students’ statements were analysed. The subject of the analyses is the area of categorization of the Otherness in terms of motives, assumptions and intentions. By means of the focus group interview method, opinions were collected and analysed in terms of the assumptions and categorization made by the respondents. The key to operationalisation of the data collected in the research process is not to analyse the content of the opinions expressed but to predict mental categories that organise the thinking and decisions that build their relationship to immigrants. The theoretical basis of the research is Krzysztof J. Brozi’s theory of cultural standard and the theory of intercultural contact.

The main subject of this article are social consequences of the results of the referendum regarding UK departure from the structures of the European Union. The author focuses on the social repercussions in the perception of British citizens and “foreigners” in the face of potential leave the European community, referred to as “Brexit”. The main focus of the author are still current issues of diversity, division “us” versus “foreigners”, stigma and social exclusion. The author based on the analysis of existing materials and a focus group interview presents how the stereotypical perception of reality can affect the development of mutual prejudices.
