This article presents the process of presenting and valorizing spatial, historical and archaeological data for creating a comparative geovisualisation of the Giecz stronghold in two time frames: the 12th and 21st centuries. The aim of this work is related to the concept of protecting and sharing cultural heritage. Special attention has been paid to the presentation of spatial archaeological and historical data in a 3D virtual environment, with a possibility of presenting them in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. From a cartographic point of view, special emphasis was placed on the proper integration of cartographic, remote sensing and graphic sources in a geomatic process for implementing the model into interactive virtual environments.

Abstract: The collection of combs from the stronghold in Santok is a set which varies in stylistic and formal terms, including products dated from the first half of the 9th century to the 13th century. A detailed analysis of the set of combs enabled changes in comb production over several hundred years to be identified and, on the other hand, helped to examine cultural links and methods of contacts which the residents of Santok maintained during this period.

Opis:
The beginning of the twenty-first century was a period of special events for Kraków related primarily to the 750th anniversary of the town’s foundation location under Magdeburg law. This jubilee resulted in a variety of scientific and research projects. As with the 700th anniversary celebrated in 1957, a number of historical and archaeological studies were carried out, which provide a summary of current knowledge on the history of the city. They were presented in the form of scientific and cartographic publications, and popular ones. In the course of the jubilee (2005–2007) a few occasional exhibitions were prepared, among which worth mentioning are the exhibitions on Kraków legends and related historical figures, the life and culture of the Kraków stronghold complex from the eleventh to the thirteenth century, as well as the changes that took place in Kraków after foundation in 1257, during the period from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. In the first decade of the twenty-first century a series of archaeological excavations were undertaken during the renovation of the main squares and streets of the city. These included the western (2002–2004) and eastern (2003, 2005–2010) part of the Main Market Square, the Small Market Square (2007), and the Szczepański Square (2008) and the main streets in the Old Town. The results of these studies have already been partially published in “Archaeological Materials” issued by the Archaeological Museum in Kraków (Vols 36 and 37), and most of all in the “Krzysztofory, the scientific journal of the Historical Museum of Kraków” (Vols 28 and 29)

Opis:
The article pertains to one of the most significant early-medieval strongholds in central Wielkopolska. At attempt has been made to present not only the most important conclusions on the discussed fortifications but also to analyse its colony backup facilities. The stronghold in Grzybowo (Września commune, Września county) is among the most mysterious and also the biggest facilities of the type from the early Middle Ages located in the heart of the Piast dominion. It was “discovered” by Olgierd Brzeski who initiated in 1989 excavations continued intermittently by 2009. The research carried out to date allows to define the chronological framework of the stronghold’s existence, namely the time between the 1020s and the mid-1050s. On the other hand, a number of issues like the stronghold’s reconstruction and development, its nature and importance in the Piast domain, its relations with the stronghold network, the course of traffic routes as well as the colony backup facili¬ties and the fortification’s location in the natural environment can and should be investigated in the course of further research.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań kości ludzkich pochodzących z trzech grobów szkieletowych wkopanych we wczesnośredniowieczne nawarstwienia północnej partii majdanu grodu w Grzybowie oraz analizę luźnego materiału kostnego z warstw zasypiskowych. W sezonie 2019 roku odsłonięto kolejny grób orientowany wzdłuż osi E-W (grób nr 1/2019), gdzie w jamie spoczywał kompletny szkielet osobnika dorosłego, u którego, przy kości udowej prawej i w zasypisku grobu, odsłonięto kości szkieletu dziecka. Materiał szkieletowy wydatowano metodą radiowęglową 14C na wiek XII/XIII.
The article presents the results of a study of human bones from three skeletal graves buried in the early medieval stratification of the northern part of the maidan of the Grzybowo stronghold, as well as an analysis of loose bone material from backfill layers. These are the first skeletal burials to be exposed and documented in the stronghold. The analysed remains belonged to adults of both sexes and to children – including a foetus and a newborn. The 2018 excavation season uncovered two skeletal graves oriented on the E-W axis. In the larger grave pit was situated the burial of an adult individual (grave no. 1/2018), and in the smaller one the burial of a child (grave no. 2/2018). In the 2019 season, another grave oriented along the E-W axis was uncovered (grave no. 1/2019) where the pit contained the complete skeleton of an adult and the bones of a child’s skeleton which were exposed near the right femur and in the grave fill. The skeletal material was dated by the 14C radiocarbon method to the 12th/18th centuries, respectively.

In 2018, excavations at the stronghold in Pasym in the Szczytno district continued (Figure 1). They were mainly concentrated on the area within the stronghold. Three excavations were carried out (Figure 2). Trench 1 (15 × 5 m) was situated in the western part on the extension south of Trench 1 from 2017. Excavation 2 (5 × 5 m) was located in the north-west part of the stronghold, on the slope descending towards the lake. Trench 3 (2 × 2 m) was located at the foot of the stronghold on the lake side. In total, the excavated area was 1.29 ar. Particularly noteworthy was the discovery of two large features (4 and 13) of a residential character. The results of previous studies clearly indicate that buildings of this type were located along the edge of the inner area of the stronghold. A large number of finds was recovered during the excavations: 5,082 ceramic fragments, 11,559 animal bone fragments and 121 artefacts.

Opis:
The stronghold called St. Peter’s hill in Radom is located in the centre of the city, in an area severely degraded by the side effects of 19th- and 20th-century industrialisation. The archaeological excavations and paleoecological research carried out in 2009–2013 created a background for studying its complex past and designing the future. The biography of St. Peter’s hill encompasses the early medieval power centre, late medieval urbanisation, nineteenth-century industrialisation, subsequent degradation of material and human resources, and present revitalisation projects. This place is far more than an archaeological site or even a part of archaeological heritage. It is a unique cultural landscape, which emerged as a result of long-lasting mutual relations between man and nature. Its materiality constitutes an inalienable cultural capital, indispensable for the reconstruction of local identities and communities of memory.

Opis:
The capture of the Stronghold of Kokenhausen in October 1700 was the last act of the 8-month-long campaign of August II’s army on the area of Swedish Inflanty Voivodeship. After the disgrace of the premature abandoning of the siege of Riga (the main aim of this campaign), it was a vital military and political success. However, in the literature concerning the Great Northern War the pieces of information on this event are mostly scarce and when confronting them with each other one can see many contradictions and oblique statements. It causes the picture of the siege and surrender of the Kokenhausen Stronghold to be unclear and bring doubts to mind. The only way out of this situation is referring to a first-hand source of information – i.e. to a description given by a witness of the events. Such a source is undoubtedly the letter written on 9th October 1900 in the camp of the Saxon army near Kokenhausen, presented herein. Its author was probably a court treasurer of the Crown, Atanazy Miączyński (1639–1723), experienced commander of John III Sobieski’s times, as well as a faithful supporter of August II.

In 2012, a new department of the Archaeological Museum in Poznań – the Genius Loci Archaeological Reserve – was established on Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) in Poznań. The island is a unique historical space, where archaeological excavations have been underway since 1938. It is thanks to them that the scope of knowledge about the beginnings of both the Polish state and the city of Poznań has improved significantly, and the results of these works have altered historians’ knowledge. The reserve has been designed so that visitors can learn about the earliest history from the point of view of science, and accompany archaeologists and representatives of other modern disciplines in discovering the secrets of long forgotten areas of history. The structures of the perfectly preserved rampart of the Poznań stronghold and the soil profiles have been made accessible to visitors in the form of an archaeological excavation site. ith the use of multimedia, discreetly placed throughout the exhibition, the entire spectrum of information about the Piast settlement from the 10th/11th century is presented, as is the rich collection of archaeological relics collected during many years of excavations. The article outlines the reserve’s activities to date and discusses the problem of reaching out to adults who seek a deeper and organised contact with culture.

In the first part of the article the author sketches an overview of the history of architectural constructions in the state of the first Piasts. She describes the origins of the „gród" (stronghold), a construction form typical for Slavonic territories of the early Middle Ages. She also characterizes the construction technology and the kinds of fortifications used. The history of the Tum island is discussed from the beginning of settlements there in the context of the emerging Polish state. Since almost the entire knowledge of the stronghold at Ostrów Tumski is rooted in archaeological research, the history of excavations is presented from their beginnings in 1938 up to the most recent results of studies on the fortifications obtained in 2011

The goal of this article is to show the narration contexts in which a medieval author set strongholds by referring to the following terms: oppidum, castrum or urbs, castellum, possibly civitas. I highlight the frequency with which selected medieval writers mentioned one centre or another. In the article I ponder a question if selected chroniclers’ narrations could indicate a regularity which helps to establish the function performed by a stronghold for the benefit of its ruler accounted most frequently.

Opis:
A non-invasive exploration of the stronghold at Dzięcioły, Łosice County, in NE Poland began in 2018 (Fig. 1, 2). Based on the results of test excavations from 1968, the stronghold was dated to the 12th century. Its three-line defence system consists of fortifications on the outside of the suburbium, the stronghold proper, and the small ringfort located on its inner grounds. Also visible are such elements as the remnants of supposed gateways, earthen ramps across the moats, and a dyke leading from the stronghold towards the river (Fig. 3, 4), allowing movement inside and outside the settlement. The dating of the site and related determination of its function are the most important research problems. The existing chronology, based on a traditional archaeological analysis, does not allow for the correct conclusions. The situation is complicated by the fact that the site at Dzięcioły consists of three separate sets of fortifications, with one of them (the central one) exceptionally developed, comprising two ditches and three concentric embankments. As the site has not been excavated, its chronology can only be inferred by noticing several possibilities for relative dating. There is a hypothesis that the stronghold at Dzięcioły is a remnant of the early medieval settlement of Łosice, translocated in the High Middle Ages to a settlement of the same name established nearby, first mentioned in the first half of the 15th century. However, analysis of the sources indicates that the stronghold at Dzięcioły may have been abandoned at the end of the first half of the 13th century, when the basin of the Middle Bug River became a target for armed invasions. This possibility has been confirmed preliminarily by the results of geophysical prospection. Alternatively, the stronghold at Dzięcioły could have been abandoned in the first quarter of the 14th century due to a change in the geopolitical situation in the region. As a result, the early medieval road network lost its dominant position, and the previously secondary routes increased in importance. It was on such a route that the new settlement of Łosice was established. It could have taken over the strategic functions previously served by the stronghold at Dzięcioły. Indirect data in this respect is provided by the results of onomastic research. The connection between the early medieval stronghold and the chartered town is also indirectly evidenced by information about the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was supposed to exist in Łosice as early as in 1264. The church could have been located in the stronghold before it was abandoned and later moved to the ‘new’ Łosice. The geophysical prospection carried out at the site revealed the presence of a rectangular anomaly measuring about 19×16 m, situated in the courtyard of the inner ringfort. The anomaly is interpreted as the remains of a burnt, wooden or wood-and-brick structure. Preliminary examination of the phenomenon of translocation indicates that in Mazovia and the areas of the Polish-Ruthenian/Polish-Lithuanian borderland, it happened it two stages. The older phase can be dated from the second half of the 10th century to the 12th century and is associated with the establishment of a stronghold network of the early state. This process is illustrated by examples from Old Mazovia and its borderland with Kievan Rus’. The stronghold network of the region survived at least until the end of the 12th or mid-13th century, when the second stage of translocation changes began. The strongholds were abandoned, and non-fortified settlements, which took over their functions, were established in the vicinity. Their proto-city status might have been further conditioned by the organisation of trading sites. The settlements were then situated at key points of travel routes, resulting in the development of local exchange in the context of long-distance trade. Due to dynamic economic and demographic development, these settlements were granted city rights in the 15th and 16th century.

The current views suggest that the stronghold in Zawada near Tarnow is a large, multi-section defensive structure with a central stronghold and fortified boroughs. It played a military role in the pre-Christian settle-ment system, enabling the protection of the nearby settlers against attacks by mobile groups of nomads from the east and south-east, and Slavic crews from the south and south-west. It was also an extensive defensive settlement in which everyday life was going on.

Opis:
Stronghold at Damice, situated on the right bank tributary of the Vistula – the Dłubnia River has been known since 1911. In the years 2004 to 2006 systematic excavations were carried out by the Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University. During these excavations the course of inner moats and embankments was confirmed. They divide the surface of the stronghold into 3 units. The construction of embankments dividing the interior of the embankments was recognized. It was a single line of palisades and wooden-earth wall. From the outside embankments were preceded by "dry" moat, of a width of 2.7–4.5 m and depth to 3.7 m. The two-phased perimeter embankment was also recognized. During the research a number of features of the Lengyel Culture were discovered as well as slightly less numerous Early Medieval features, most likely functioning simultaneously with embankments and moats (i.e. in the VIII-X centuries).
