Opis:
Narratives about psychiatry and psychiatrists, which appear in texts of culture, are clearly negative. Nevertheless, media images are the main source of common knowledge concerning the field. Several strategies of stereotyping psychiatrists in movie images can be distinguished. Social attitudes towards psychiatry, including these present among medical specialists, as well as psychiatrists themselves, reflect similar areas of devaluation. These problem fields are a valuable source of information about current problems within the discipline, and the condition of the cultural reality in which it is immersed.

Opis:
Disabled people are a social category that is very often at the effect of the stereotypes and prejudices prevalent in society. Frequently such persons suffer marginalization or exclusion. A disability can be the source of a stigma that defines the life of a human being both in the individual and social dimension. Only a portion of disabled persons manage to counteract the social stigmatization effectively, and above all to overcome their own fears about appearing in public with a body that is not fully functional. The author presents the changes occurring in the lives of persons with physical disabilities after their engagement in sports activities. Using Fritz Schütze’s theory of process structures and Anselm Strauss’s work on identity, he tries to show that engaging in sports could make it possible for a disabled person to move from a trajectory of suffering as a stigmatized person toward a biographical plan of action involving specific turning points and a reconstruction of the person’s ego.

Background. The workplace is one of many areas of life where obese people are unfairly treated. According to the literature obese women are particularly susceptible to discrimination in employment. There is a lack of polish researches of this subject. Objective. The main objective of this study was to analyze personal, subjective experiences related to weight bias and discrimination against obese people in the workplace of obese Polish women. Material and Methods. The study was carried out in a hospital clinic for obesity management. A total of 420 women with BMI>30, aged 21 to 72, participated in group interviews focused on the weight bias and discrimination against obese people in the workplace. Results. In the group of clinically obese women, 5.3% of subjects had experienced employment discrimination and 10.5% had been victims of verbal and social abuse in the workplace. The most common psycho-physical consequences of the weight stigma were emotional problems, lack of motivation and overeating in response to stress. Conclusions. Weight-based discrimination in the workplace poses a problem in Poland. The weight stigma and occupational discrimination lead to psycho-physical discomfort which exacerbates overeating and obesity.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody.

The aim of this paper is to present the phenomenon of social exclusion of persons whose body has been deformed due to disease process. Modern concepts of stigmatization and sociocultural aspects, which can be the background of social exclusion process, are going to be shown. Authors’ own research fo- cused on how the bodies of women after mastectomy and those suffering from anorexia are perceived in the society. In the lights of obtained results, stigmatization process is in the more advanced stage in women with anorexia than in those after mastectomy. In women after mastectomy it stops on social labeling, but in the context of anorexia it reaches the stage of social rejection according to Link and Phelan’s (2001) theory, which can be connected with social attribution of responsibility for having a stigma (somatic vs mental illness).

Aim: To put the human condition and the condition of the humanities in the perspective of critical human life situations and critical situations in the history of humanity. Methods: An analysis of primary sources and media statements by politicians and clerics. Results: The mutilation of human dignity is a constant element in the history of humanity. Man is a perpetrator, but also a victim of this mutilation. The constancy of mutilation of human dignity has its systemic sanction. Thus, it becomes a problem that transcends subjective conditions, for man is (becomes) a product of the system. Conclusions: The humanities, however, are incapable of putting what is singular, hat has happened, into a universal perspective beyond the area of declarative narrative. It is necessary, therefore, to reinterpret the basic concepts of the humanities seen in the perspective of critical human situations and the history of humanity.

This article attempts to present, summarize and develop an essay Witaj bracie, pisać bardzo trudno (Hello brother, it is very difficult to write). The essay under scrutiny was devoted to the reception of changes in public discourse by Russian intellectuals after the occupation of Crimea. The following features were the most important ones: diagnosing anomie, shock, caused by an unexpected cultural change; weak presence of pro-European rhetoric in the messages of authors considered to be pro-Western (occidentalists); stigmatization of intellectuals (restoration of the category of “fifth column and traitors of the nation”), as well as their self-stigmatization (recalling the nineteenthcentury category of “superfluous man”); historical references to the times of Tsar Nicholas I and Leonid Brezhnev (no references to the Stalinist period, which will appear after 2015); replacement of the term “public opinion” with the “mass-media effect”; belief in degradation, social demoralization, which would result from the determinism of the “Russian way”; restoration of the Russian intelligentsia category. Finally, an attempt was made to present new determinants of social dynamics influencing the change in the Russian journalists’ discourse that intensified after the year 2015.

Opis:
Suicide is still one of the most stigmatized types of death, arousing controversy. There exists its special type: assisted suicide in which a one kills themselves with the help of another person. It is very interesting to compare the psychological consequences of these two forms of death for the suicide survivors – that is, the relatives of the ones who took their own lives. While there are many similarities between suicide and assisted suicide, certain "technical differences" between them can significantly affect the later functioning of the survivors. In the case of "ordinary" suicide, we distinguish factors that make it difficult to survive bereavement, while assisted suicide may sometimes also have a facilitating effect on this process. The literature review shows that suicide survivors experience a higher sense of guilt (exacerbated by sometimes felt relief), anger, abandonment and responsibility, and lower support and acceptance than the relatives of other deceased. Interestingly, they do not necessarily suffer from mental disorders more often, but they are more stigmatized and feel the need to hide the circumstances of their loved ones’ death. People left after the assisted suicide also sometimes experience emotions such as relief and a sense of abandonment, they tend to distance themselves from others and hide the truth about the death of their loved ones (in this case also because of the fear of legal consequences). The most significant differences, important for the later experience of bereavement, are the possibility of saying goodbye, as well as the belief that they provided their loved ones the "good death". These factors make it much easier to mourn, reduce the traumatic experience of grief. However, there are other factors potentially complicating bereavement – research shows that assisting in suicide correlates with certain mental disorders. This may be, for example, because of ethical doubts that this practice raises, conflict with the value system, potential remorse, alienation from the community after condemning such an act, fear of legal consequences and doubts if assisting in a suicide was a right decision.

Opis:
Poczucie przynależności do grupy, bycie akceptowanym to jedna z potrzeb życiowych człowieka. Aby pomóc dziecku otyłemu w przezwyciężaniu problemów potrzebne są działania holistyczne, kompleksowe, łączące różne interwencje.
Childhood obesity in Poland and in many other countries is on the rise. Numerous problems disturbing functioning in the mental and social sphere are often mentioned as the consequences of being overweight. Young people with obesity problems encounter very strong negative reactions from their environment. Most people feel the need to form an immediate overall opinion of someone that is biased by how we perceive one of their traits. Obese people are perceived almost exclusively through the prism of one characteristic, which is so domi-nant that it obscures their strengths and values. Thus, one can speak of stigmatization as a social phenomenon resulting from obesity. For a child or a young person a peer environment is extremely important. The feeling of belonging to a group, being accepted is one of the basic needs. In order to help an obese child overcome problems, holistic and comprehensive actions combining various interventions are required.

This paper is intended to present the role of sport in the lives of people with physical disabilities and to determine how practicing sports changes the way a person with a physical disability sees themselves. The paper reflects the experiences of people who started practicing sports, which allowed them to adopt an alternative perspective of their bodies and thus pushed them to negotiate their identities. Using the concept of Goffmanian stigma, I point to the sports activities’ usefulness in understanding the management of stigma by those dealing with a physical disability. Taking into account the above theoretical references, in the research, which constitutes a foundation of this paper, I refer to the subjective perspectives of the researched individuals, rendering their points of view, and, based on that, construct and offer theoretical generalizations. Therefore, the research materials employed in this study are constituted by the personal experiences of people with physical disabilities who practice sports. All data have been gathered by conducting unstructured interviews with such people. The research materials were analyzed and interpreted following the procedures of grounded theory methodology.

The objective of this paper was to address the notion of family stigma related to mental illnesses and discuss relevant theoretical perspectives. The review of the literature performed in this study shows that concepts of “family stigma” and “stigma by association” are used interchangeably. Family stigma includes the prejudice and discrimination experienced by members of family of a person suffering from mental illness. For many families the stigmatization that surrounds mental illness is a central issue causing concern, anxiety, shame and self-blame. Moreover, family members can be considered somehow “contaminated” because of close relationship they have with the stigmatized mentally ill person in their family. It is shown that current research results indicate this type of stigma negatively affects family members and relatives. In the paper’s closure some educational programmes devoted to counteracting the family stigma linked to metal disorders are presented.

The 2013-2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa is widely regarded as the largest and scariest, with 28638 cases and 11316 deaths reported. While Africans have long been known to uphold social values and norms, the EVD outbreak may have affected some of these age-long practices. This paper did an exploratory study of the role of the 2013-2014 EVD outbreak in social reconstruction of realities in West Africa. A literature search of PubMed, EBSCO and Google Scholar for studies on “Ebola” and “social reconstruction” in “Africa” was conducted. Widespread stigmatization, rejection, and isolation of EVD cases, survivors and their relatives characterized affected communities. Social interactions, intimacy, acceptance and identity were the leading realities socially reconstructed. There is need for government, non-governmental organizations and relevant social groups to facilitate effective rebuilding processes within affected communities, geared towards a prompt return to normal ways of life.

The self-perception of people with disabilities often differs from how they are perceived by others in the community. The roles of these persons and their relationships in the society are often defined by others in a completely different way (than the way they view themselves) by assigning a specific identity to them. Disability becomes a central category which defines the social identity of these people. Difference between the transactional and true identity of the person disrupts interaction and constitutes a space in which it is possible to stigmatize/mark. In this context, a very important question appears regarding how and whether the person with acquired disabilities adapts to an expected social identity? Has the ego identity status been changed and if so, to what extent? To what extent is ego identity connected with the stigma and other scopes of the personal identity?

The paper examines the issues of epidemiology, conditions, and treatment of eating disorders in men which are not widely recognised in either Polish and other International research. The aim of this paper is to provide an narrative overview of published research to date on the epidemiology, determinants and treatment of eating disorders in males, to discuss some of the differences reported in studies of self-identified gender disparities, and differences in comparison to the literature on female eating disorders. The prevalence and extent of the issue is underestimated by those affected and by clinicians. Consequently, men suffering from eating disorders (EDs) are less likely to be recognised or to receive appropriated timely help. This paper is based on a narrative review analysis of research reports on EDs. The authors discuss the issue of EDs in the context of gender, indicating how self-identified gender can affect clinical presentation (including somatic self-perception, and the methods employed and motives in striving for a ‘perfect’ figure) and how these relate. Both the methods used in collecting data on eating disorders and the precision of diagnostic criteria for recognising eating disorders (mainly anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa) (both on the DSM and ICD systems) are based largely on research conducted in female clinical populations. Analysis of the empirical material to date leads us to assume that symptoms of EDs in men are more often (than in the case of women) related to (self)stigmatisation, difficulties in obtaining a correct diagnosis, coexistent body dysmorphic disorders, substance addictions, and greater physical activity.’
