Opis:
Two methods of neighbor search for the SPH algorithm are presented, based on a constant number of neighbors and a constant cut-off radius. First, feasible methods of comparison were analyzed. Then, the two selected methods were compared visually and computationally. Considering the use of the SPH algorithm for simulating incompressible fluids, the obtained results suggest that the method with a constant cut-off radius is better than that with a constant number of neighbors. The simulation results of both methods are practically indistinguishable, while the computational costs favor one of them.

Opis:
A numerical model was performed of penetration of 9 mm Parabellum bullet into Kevlar layers, with the use of the AUTODYN software program. Simulations were conducted with a bullet modelled by means of the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamicsmethod (SPH) and with an armour coded by a Lagrange grid. The simulations were performed for 20 layers of Kevlar (one layer: thickness - 0.3 mm, surface density - 220 g/cm²) and for impact velocity of 350 m/s. The comparison included the mean velocity of the bullet (which takes into account the velocities of particles that separated from the part of the bullet penetrating the armour) and the velocities at gauge points established near the axis of symmetry of the bullet. The gauge point representative for velocity of the bullet was indicated. With regard to excessively large deformations of the grid, that caused interruption of the initial simulation, the criteria of erosion (cells removal) were introduced. From effective strains available in the AUTODYN software, the effective instantaneous geometric strain was selected. Influence of the erosion strain (value of strain for which cells are removed) onto the mass of removed cells and the residual velocity of the bullet were investigated. Simulations with neglect and respect to mass of removed cells in further calculations were performed. The erosion criteria for which further simulations should be conducted were indicated.

Opis:
The numerical simulations were carried out of penetration of 12.7 mm armour piercing projectile into the ARMOX 500 steel armour with the use of the AUTODYN 2D software program applying axis symmetry. The calculations were performed by means of the SPH (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic) method. A constitutive Johnson-Cook model was used for both the armour and the projectile. The influence of discretization density of the numerical model on the residual velocity vr of the projectile, its wear and time of calculations was studied. An eight times decrease in the distance between the SPH particles in the numerical model causes an over 130 fold increase of the projectile residual velocity and a 960 fold increase in the calculation time. The examined aspects included the influence of armour thickness g and yield stress Re of the projectile material on its residual velocity and manner of the projectile and armour damage. The residual velocity of the projectile decreases together with an increase of the armour thickness and for g = 20 mm is vr = 300 m/s. Together with a decrease of the yield stress of the projectile material its residual velocity also decreases, the wear of the projectile increases, the shape and the dimensions of cross section hole in the armour also change.

Opis:
For solving a partial different equation by a numerical method, a possible alternative may be either to use a mesh method or a meshless method. A flexible computational procedure for solving 1D linear elastic beam problems is presented that currently uses two forms of approximation function (moving least squares and kernel approximation functions) and two types of formulations, namely the weak form and collocation technique, respectively, to reproduce Element Free Galerkin (EFG) and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) meshless methods. The numerical implementation for beam problems of these two formulations is discussed and numerical tests are presented to illustrate the difference between the formulations.

Opis:
This paper focuses on a rubber structure behaviour assessment under dynamic loading on the example of a terrain suspension system subjected to pressure wave. Due to the fact that pressure wave interacts with the tire, in the first place, it was important to develop a discrete model of it as much similar to the real one as possible. Thus, numerical model of the tire was divided into six different parts with steel cords inside. The non-linear dynamic analyses were performed using the LSDYNA code. In order to simulate the blast wave propagation, the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation with Jones Wilkins Lee equation defining the explosive material were used. In the second part of investigations, the rubber behaviour under dynamic loading with the strain rate effect and failure process taking into consideration was assessed and compared for TNT and C4 charge.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of experimental-numerical tests of firing at aluminum composite materials. The test materials were manufactured by pressure infiltration of porous ceramic preforms made of α-Al2O3 particles in the amount of 30% and 40% by volume. The EN AW-7075 alloy was chosen as the material matrix, and the steel 7.62×39 mm (M 43) FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) intermediate ammunition was selected for firing. In the result of the experiment, the samples were perforated with a clear difference in the muzzle diameter. The projectile with fragments caused damage to up to three reference plates placed behind the samples (witness plates) in composites with 40% of particles by volume. The mechanics of crack propagation during ballistic impacts of the projectile was characterized based on microstructure studies. Then, using numerical analysis of impact load, the examination of composite materials puncture in the ABAQUS environment was carried out. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed for the discretization of geometric models using Hex elements. The Johnson-Cook constitutive model describing the relationship between stress and strain in metal-ceramic composites was applied for the analyses. Numerical models were then subjected to numerical verification using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Based on the obtained results, it was found that the hybrid FEM/SPH method correlates significantly with the experimental results.

Opis:
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian formula-based non-grid computational method for simulating fluid flows, solid deformation, and fluid structured systems. SPH is a method widely applied in many fields of science and engineering, especially in the field of materials science. It solves complex physical deformation and flow problems. This paper provides a basic overview of the application of the SPH method in metal processing. This is a very useful simulation method for reconstructing flow patterns, solidification, and predicting defects, limitations, or material destruction that occur during deformation. The main purpose of this review article is to give readers better understanding of the SPH method and show its strengths and weaknesses. Studying and promoting the advantages and overcoming the shortcomings of the SPH method will help making great strides in simulation modeling techniques. It can be effectively applied in training as well as for industrial purposes.

Opis:
The prediction of machining processes is a challenging task and usually requires a large experimental basis. These experiments are time-consuming and require manufacturing and testing of different tool geometries at various process conditions to find optimum machining settings. In this paper, a machine learning model of the orthogonal cutting process of Ti6Al4V is proposed to predict the cutting and feed forces for a wide range of process conditions with regards to rake angle, clearance angle, cutting edge radius, feed and cutting speed. The model uses training data generated by virtual experiments, which are conducted using physical based simulations of the orthogonal cutting process with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The ML training set is composed of input parameters, and output process forces from 2500 instances of GPU accelerated SPH simulations. The resulting model provides fast process force predictions and can consider the cutter geometry in comparison to classical analytical approaches.
