Sei Solo. On solitude in the strict sense (Jerzy Pilch „The Living Spirit”) Jerzy Pilch’s novel Żywego ducha [Living Spirit], published in 2018, is an exceptional item in the writer’s oeuvre, being a manifestation of his ‘late style’ (Spätstil). The uniqueness of this work also stems from the fact that Pilch subjected not only himself and his writing to intellectual and artistic revision, but also Culture, i.e. that sphere which – opposing the mythical powers of Nature – constitutes a kind of fortification (also consolation) against the randomness (randomness) of events. The absolute loneliness of the novelistic narrator results from the hypothetical assumption that the signs of words, the signs of culture, do not indicate the presence of some external instance guaranteeing the meaning of the world. On the other hand, it is possible to pose the thesis that it is literature that is the individual’s act of defence against nothingness.

In the time of pandemic, solitude has proven to be such a prevailing issue that it has been propounded by Professor John T. Cacioppo, a social psychologist from the University of Chicago, that it should be considered a disease. The present article shows reflection on one’s attempts to escape the sense of desolation. The author interprets Dead As They Come, a short story by Ian McEwan, whose protagonist wallows in love for a clothes dummy. At first, the object of his desire, in compliance with Roland Barthes’ theses, appears to be remarkable and unique. Nevertheless, the closing part of the work documents the protagonist’s failure, as he realises that he succumbed to his own phantasm. In the final part of the article, the author makes a reference to the phenomenon of reborn dolls, as an example on nonfictional combat against solitude.

The paper is aimed at defending the following three claims: (1) that the objective value of privacy may change in time (as its significance is relative to concrete social context); (2) that in the contemporary world, in which the state’s and global corporations power to intrude upon our liberty, especially upon its variety called informational privacy, has become due to technological developments particularly strong, the need for protection of privacy has become especially urgent (given our attachment to the axiological fundamentals of liberal democracies), and therefore its objective value is very high; and (3) that in spite of this high objective value of privacy, it does not correspond to its subjective valuation by the ‘typical’ citizen of contemporary liberal democracies, who, if Byung-Chul Han’s picture of our society as ‘the burnout one’ is correct, has become mentally exhausted by overstimulation and overachievement, and for whom, consequently, the central value has become flatly understood happiness (as material comfort and security), rather than liberty and its constitutive part, which is the right to privacy.

Autorka rozważa dzisiejszy sens i znaczenie samouctwa w powiązaniu z osobnością i samotnością – na tle jednej z historycznych koncepcji samokształceniowych w Polsce. Osobność jako sposób istnienia człowieka, istoty myślącej, jest filozoficznym punktem wyjścia dla analizy. Zakłada się, że edukacja ma do spełnienia ważną rolę w uczeniu myślenia, które jednak wymaga bycia osobno, ze sobą samym (u siebie). W związku z czym autorka proponuje przywołać jedną z koncepcji samouctwa, rozwijaną w czasach zaborów i w okresie międzywojnia w Polsce, jako przykład doświadczania siebie i uczenia się (szkoły) myślenia w samotności, nie poza edukacją ale w jej ramach. Analiza i interpretacja hermeneutyczna zagadnienia pozwala wykazać aktualność samouctwa jako potrzebnego humanizującego dopełnienia współczesnej szkoły w Polsce, balansującej między skrajnościami encyklopedyzmu i instrumentalizmu. A tym samym pozwala zebrać wiązkę argumentów na rzecz wykształcenia niesprowadzalnego do uzawodowienia a sprzyjającego kondycji ludzkiej jako vita activa.
The author considers the present sense and meaning of self-instruction – in connection to the issue of being alone and solitary – against the context of one of historical concepts of self-education in Poland. Aloneness as a mode of human existence, of a thinking being, is a philosophical starting point of our analysis. It is assumed that education has an important role to play in learning to think, which, however, requires being alone (at home with oneself). Therefore, the author proposes to recall one of the concepts of self-instruction developed in Poland during the partitions and interwar period, as an example of experiencing oneself and learning to think in solitude; not outside of education but within it. The hermeneutic analysis and interpretation of the problem allows to demonstrate the validity of self-instruction as a necessary humanizing complement to school education in Poland, balancing between the extremes of encyclopaedism and instrumentalism. Finally, it allows gathering several arguments for education beyond professionalization and education that promotes the human condition as vita activa.

Duże znaczenie w praktyce pedagogicznej ma umiejętne wykorzystanie doświadczenia samotności i pokazanie zmagań, jakie w obszarze relacji ze światem i z samym sobą mieli wielcy twórcy. W artykule tej pokazuję tę pracę nad własną samotnością i niezrozumieniem przez innych na przykładzie wybranych fragmentów biografii wielkiego polskiego uczonego Józefa Marii Hoene-Wrońskiego. Narzędziem stosowanym w tych badaniach jest odpowiednio ujęta antropologia samotności na podstawie analizy wybranych fragmentów z Księgi Rodzaju, wiersza J. Kaczmarskiego Pusty raj oraz doświadczenia samotności S. Kierkegaarda. Wyszczególniam pierwotną i wtórną samotność i pokazuję ich miejsce w procesie wychowania.
Making good use of the experience of solitude and revealing struggle which great creators faced within the relations with the world and with themselves play an important role in pedagogical practice. The following paper shows this work on one’s own solitude and lack of understanding on the example of the selected fragments of a biography of an eminent Polish scholar Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński. The tool used in this research is an appropriately expressed anthropology of solitude based on the analysis of the selected fragments of the Book of Genesis, J. Kaczmarski’s poem “Pusty raj” (“Empty Paradise”) and the experience of solitude by S. Kierkegaard. Primary and secondary solitude is distinguished and their place in the process of education is shown.

The paper analyses the specificity of the phenomenon of loneliness experienced in Alzheimer’s disease. The theoretical part contains a discussion on the issue of solitude and loneliness as described in the scientific literature, as well as on the significance of various manifestations of loneliness for the possibility of achieving existential fulfilment. Particular attention has been paid to the context of unaccountable loneliness caused by destructive changes in Alzheimer’s disease. It disrupts the ability to remember and perceive oneself in relation to one’s social environment. In the empirical part which uses the qualitative research approach, an in-depth reflection on the multi-faceted, very complex nature of experiencing loneliness by an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease is presented. The analysis was conducted on the basis of her own entries in her daily notebook concerning the ways of experiencing loneliness as a source of existential suffering. The analysis of the collected research material enabled the identification of several manifestations of the loneliness of an elderly person which do not correspond with the typical image of loneliness experienced by an individual unaffected by dementia. The analysis captured the subtle nature of existential suffering, which reflects the specificity of the deepening personal degradation of an elderly person caused by Alzheimer’s disease.
Artykuł dotyczy analizy specyfiki zjawiska samotności doświadczanego w sytuacji choroby Alzheimera. Część teoretyczna dotyczy dyskusji nad kwestią samotności i osamotnienia omawianą w literaturze naukowej, a także znaczenia różnych przejawów samotności dla możliwości osiągania spełnienia egzystencjalnego człowieka. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na kontekst niezawinionego osamotnienia wywołanego przez destruktywne zmiany choroby Alzheimera, które zaburzają zdolność zapamiętywania oraz postrzegania siebie w relacji z własnym otoczeniem społecznym. W części empirycznej zrealizowanej w podejściu badań jakościowych rozwinięto pogłębiony namysł nad nieoczywistym, bardzo złożonym charakterem doświadczania osamotnienia przez starszą osobę chorą na Alzheimera. Poddano analizie własnoręcznie zapisywane przez nią w notatniku codziennym wpisy dotyczące sposobów doświadczania osamotnienia jako źródła cierpienia egzystencjalnego. Analiza zgromadzonego materiału badawczego pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie kilku przejawów osamotnienia Seniorki nieprzystających do typowego wyobrażenia osamotnienia doświadczanego przez człowieka niedotkniętego chorobą typu demencyjnego. W analizie uchwycono subtelny w swej złożoności charakter cierpienia egzystencjalnego będącego odbiciem specyfiki pogłębiającej się degradacji osobowej Seniorki powodowanej chorobą Alzheimera.

Circumstantial evidence counts as hard fact in the attempt to understand what infl uenced Joseph Conrad’s works. Twenty-seven years ago Allan Hunter boldly argued that Conrad’s Heart of Darkness was, owing to many similar passages and phrases, strongly infl uenced by Rider Haggard’s She. To date, Hunter’s argument has been left unevaluated. This essay highlights similarities between the two antiheroes Kurtz and Ayesha in order to add circumstantial evidence to Hunter’s stated, but relatively unexplored view. This essay does not attempt to prove a direct infl uence, but hopes to show that engaging with this specifi c question of infl uence is worthwhile.

Opis:
The ontological loneliness of the human being, experienced in the personological aspects of existence, may become constructive or destructive, a fact that depends on the person's will and the factors mentioned in the paper. Having conducted a conceptual analysis, the opposite tendencies in the contemporary times were shown: towards universalism and unification on the one hand, and excessive individualism on the other. They are conducive to cultivate loneliness and ignore the possibility to transform it in person-making solitude. The indispensable experience of loneliness may become something that is voluntarily turned into a chronic form that impairs the personal development, whose manifestations have been characterised. The false picture of the gift of solitude has been set side by side with its proper interpretation, the interpretation that is conditioned by the acceptance of the true hierarchy of values. It allows us to perceive the values of solitude shown in the text. The importance of the personal trait of solitude is shown in its role decisive of development or regress, in dependence on its true or false interpretation. It is worth considering the hidden message of the attribute of ontic separation. That separation, as it is impossible to replace solitude by material and human factors, directs persons towards the supernatural reality. The “Gospel of solitude” means hope to do away with loneliness and turn it into solitude that brings unity with God.

The subject of this article is the presentation of the images of solitude in selected works of Polish Baroque poets. The analysis and interpretation reveals the testimony of the existential experience of solitude present in their texts. This testimony is expressed in a way that is highly individualised in terms of its artistic features and ideational content and that is inscribed into the framework of the culture and ideas of the time.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest ukazanie obrazów samotności w wybranych utworach polskich poetów barokowych. Analiza oraz interpretacja ukazuje obecne w ich tekstach świadectwo egzystencjalnego doświadczenia samotności wyrażone w bardzo zindywidualizowany artystycznie oraz ideowo sposób, wpisany w ramy kultury oraz idei tego czasu.

The subject of the research was the loneliness in families caused by the death of a parent/ spouse resulting from a long-standing illness. Ten families (6 mothers, 4 fathers, 15 children) from the city of Białystok, who had been during the mourning period for 2 years, were included in the qualitative research. The case study method was applied, as well as the following research techniques: structured interview and narrative interview.
Przedmiotem podjętych badań było osamotnienie w rodzinie spowodowane śmiercią rodzica/małżonka wskutek długotrwałej choroby. Badaniami jakościowymi objęto 10 rodzin (6 matek, 4 ojców, 15 dzieci) zamieszkujących w mieście Białystok, będących w okresie żałoby od dwóch lat. Wykorzystano metodę indywidualnego przypadku oraz techniki badawcze: wywiad skategoryzowany i wywiad narracyjny.

Introduction: Among bereaved families, numerous tensions, stressors, and anxieties that are direct consequences of the loss of close relatives can be observed. Effective mitigation of these concerns depends heavily on the depth of the feeling of loneliness as well as on various factors that determine it. Purpose: To determine the impact of the death of a parent on children’s feelings of loneliness within their own families. Material and methods: A total of 10 families (6 mothers, 4 fathers, and 15 children) from the city of Białystok who had been in mourning during the two-year period were included in this qualitative research. The case study method was applied in addition to the following research techniques: structured interview, narrative interview, the Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank projective technique, and an analysis of children’s activity products (essay entitled “My Family”). Results: The youngest children were characterized by less-intense feelings of loneliness, as they do not yet understand the irreversibility of death, whereas children at ages 12 to 14, aware of human life’s stability and persistence, felt the state of loneliness significantly more deeply. To cope with its presence, the children and their families usually used informal social support (parents, grandparents, siblings, or friends) rather than seeking the help of qualified social service professionals. Conclusions: Talking with children about death and remembering a deceased parent with them are integral parts of the mourning process. Before children can accept their loss, they feel a great need for talking and having the company of other family members in experiencing their pain. There are a number of critically important tasks that a family in mourning needs to face, including the following: helping to understand the need for breaking personal ties with the deceased and reducing the internal tension caused by the loss; modifying former structure, duties, and family roles; and the need for the bereaved family, especially its children, to find new relationships in the outside world.

The words of the marriage vow set the direction for the development of every sacramental marriage. Their implementation is not automatic, not happened spontaneously, but required every day work based on God's grace. Paradoxically, marital life is marked by the issues, the experience of solitude and has a negative effect on marriage relationship, or it may be evidence of its disorder. A well-lived solitude is associated with loneliness, which is positively experienced, in which condition, a man could find the truth about himself, the world, his place in it, as well as the source and purpose of his life. The SPICE index is a tool that can be used to constructively work out solitude and help couples build up their relationship and achieved a new quality of it. SPICE points to 5 main spheres (spiritual, physical, intellectual, communicative, emotional) on which each relationship is built. SPICE offers a method how to manage them in good way, leading to the implementation of marital commitments in marriage.  SPICE presents spouses, their needs, feelings, marital identity, including sexual identity and explain them to spouses.
Słowa przysięgi małżeńskiej wyznaczają kierunek rozwoju każdego, sakramentalnego małżeństwa. Ich realizacja nie jest jednak samoczynnie, spontanicznie dziejącą się rzeczywistością, ale każdodniową pracą małżonków opartą na Bożej łasce. W codzienność małżeńską paradoksalnie mogłoby się wydawać, wpisane jest doświadczenie osamotnienia, jako kondycja negatywnie wpływająca na relację małżeńską, czy też świadcząca o jej zaburzeniu. Dobrze przeżyte, przepracowane osamotnienie prowadzi do samotności, która jest doświadczeniem pozytywnym, w którym człowiek odnajduje prawdę o sobie, świecie, swoim miejscu w nim, a także źródle i celu swojego życia. SPICE indeks jest narzędziem, które może posłużyć do konstruktywnego przepracowania osamotnienia, z którego małżonkowie wyjdą umocnieni, a ich relacja osiągnie nową jakość. SPICE wskazuje na 5 głównych sfer (duchową, fizyczną, intelektualną, komunikatywną, emocjonalną), na których bazuje każda relacja i podaje praktyczne sposoby zarządzania nią, prowadzące do jej umacniania, ukształtowania, aby realizacja słów przysięgi małżeńskiej stała się udziałem samych małżonków. Jednocześnie SPICE podnosi świadomość małżonków na ich potrzeby, uczucia, tożsamość małżeńską, także seksualną i związaną z nią umiejętność zarządzania małżeńską płodnością.

Opis:
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie najważniejszych celów wychowania przygotowującego do dojrzałego przeżywania życia samotnego (życia w celibacie) osób duchownych i konsekrowanych. Autor dokonuje rozróżnienia pomiędzy „samotnością”, określającą pewien stan życia, a „osamotnieniem” – będącym zespołem negatywnych odczuć, które mogą – ale nie muszą – być związane z życiem samotnym. W opracowaniu omówiono najistotniejszy cel wychowania do samotności, jakim jest kształtowanie dojrzałości ludzkiej, przy czym szczególną uwagę poświęcono rozwijaniu dojrzałości emocjonalnej kandydatów do życia w celibacie i osób realizujących taki ideał, co jest szczególnie istotne w kontekście potrzeby rozwijania przez nich ojcostwa duchowego. Zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę świadomości duchownych dotyczącej znaczenia i sensu życia samotnego. Poruszono też problem związku pomiędzy samotnością i życiem wspólnotowym oraz omówiono zadania wychowawcze związane z dojrzałym uczestnictwem osób samotnych w relacjach z innymi.
The aim of the article is to present the most important goals of education that prepares for experiencing solitary lives (in celibacy) by priests and consecrated men in a mature way. The author emphasizes the distinction between “solitude” characteristic for adopting a certain way of life and “loneliness” – a set of negative feelings which can be, but not necessarily so, relevant to a lonely life. The most crucial goal of education for solitude that relies on shaping human maturity has been analysed in the study. At the same time, a special attention has been drawn to the development of emotional maturity among the candidates for living in celibacy and people pursuing such ideal. This aspect seems to be crucial in view of the need to develop their spiritual fatherhood. The article also focuses on the need of consciousness of a real sense and meaning of solitary life among priests. Such issues as the problem of connection between solitude and community life and the educational tasks related to mature participation of solitary people in relations with others have been discussed in the study as well.

What is Rachilde’s vocation? Could her life have taken another course rather than the literary way? According to what she declares in her autobiographical or semi-autobiographical texts, it turns out that this profession, chosen consciously in her early years, had saved her from madness. Drawing inspiration from the psychoanalytical observations contained in Catherine Millot’s book La Vocation de l’écrivain, the present study attempts to establish the sources of the literary career chosen by Rachilde, her own ways of exercising it and the point of achievement that she could reach by accomplishing certain choices. For Rachilde, there is no enjoyment outside of writing.
