SOCIOLOGY OF SCIENCE
Opis:
Due to Bronislaw Malinowski, Florian Znaniecki, Leon Petrazycki and several others' achievements, Polish sociology has enjoyed an a priori recognition. Sadly, this situation is changing. According to the author, there are following alarming trends and phenomena in Polish sociology: absence of criticism, lack of 'middle range theories' as well as the lack of will to formulate them; loosing the potential of social change laboratory, unsatisfactory state of social change research; lack of new ideas that would spread abroad, sticking with one paradigm; absence of appreciation of novel research in Poland (e.g. sociology of morality); insufficient co-operation across sub-disciplines and fragmentarization. Yet, there are several problem areas in Polish sociology, that are could be recognized as outstanding in the world. These are: 1) social norms and deviation sociology, 2) social stratification; 3) theory of social change, 4) sociology of science and 5) social engineering. At a closer look, however, it turns out that the achievements in theory of social change are smaller than one would expect in the social context extremely beneficial for this type of studies. In the area of social stratification there are too few 'middle range' generalizations. There five ways of improving this situation: 1) concentrating on successful developments, 2) implementation of practical test for existing methodological approaches, 3) transforming technicalized thinking by humanities' approach; 4) developing new abilities of theory building in social sciences, and 5) undertaking comprehensive analysis of Polish society.

Opis:
The paper discusses the chosen ongoing perspectives related to science understanding based problems. Science is viewed, following Robert Merton, as a functioning institution. Social context plays a significant role in defining the possibilities of developing science. The question arises how a functioning institution can be effectively analyzed and which perspectives can be implemented. Hence this paper’s goal is to reveal some ways of exploring science understanding. Consequently the paper touches the scientific discourses upon science discussing its academic functional ethos and on the other hand tension between bureaucratization and openness in science. More broadly how far science is democratized in an academic interaction. The proposition of examining the problem of the quality of science as an institution is to grasp two perspectives: first, the formal perspective, related to the legal field and its rationality and second, followed by Adele Clarke known as “situatedness”. The idea of joining formalization with situatedness can be regarded as an embodiment within John Meyer and Brian Rowan’s concept of an institutionalized organization. Hence science understanding is defined as a complex functioning institution escaping from a modern version of science into many postmodern ad-hoc made sciences. The paper’s intention is to provide problems and proposition of solving them through applying an integrating perspective

Opis:
This article aims to discuss the idea of ethos of science and ethos of scholar in the sociology of science of J. Gockowski. The starting point for analysis of the problem is defining the very concept of ethos. Then, the author discusses the distinction between the ethos of science and the ethos of scholar and points out the consequences of this distinction for the sociological analysis of scientific life. In this context, the author examines the character of J. Gockowski as a scholar, who not only was the theorist of the theory of ethos of science, but also who applied the ethos requirements and rules in his everyday scientific activity.

Opis:
The discussion about the position of Polish sociology at the background of world sociology organized by the Sociological Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences revealed significant differences among the participating scholars. The pessimistic view about the state of Polish sociology and its functioning within world sociology was expressed by Edmund Mokrzycki and Jerzy Szacki, who pointed out at both institutional and political difficulties (e.g. isolation of Polish sociology from world sociology, limitation of contacts) as well as theoretical predicaments of the discipline (e.g. the fact that the change of dominant paradigm in Western sociology had passed virtually unnoticed by Polish sociological theory). Piotr Sztompka expressed the concern that insufficient number of Polish sociological research was being published in renowned international scholarly publishing houses, at the same time he envisaged the concrete measures for the improve of the current situation. The state of Polish sociology was assessed rather differently by Kazimierz Doktór, who concentrated on the relations between Polish sociology and sociologies of socialist countries. First, he emphasized the good positions of Polish sociology in this group, and second he urged to promote this co-operation further while ceasing to mimic Western sociology. Jerzy Wiatr suggested that pessimistic evaluations of Polish sociology were a misperception. Although he was critical of Polish sociology for the particularity of its empirical research and medium standards of daily work, he optimistically placed its achievements in the long-term perspective and saw the development of theory of socialist society as its unique and original contribution to world sociology.

Aim. This paper elucidates how the emergent impact agenda is slowly but surely changing the normative framework of modern Western science. Method. The paper investigates conceptually the implications of the impact agenda for the research process. We outline a chronology around the evaluation regime of research impact and identify the causal mechanisms that change the disciplinary structure of the research ecosystem. We draw upon a sociological model of scientific knowledge production to contrast and discuss how impact facts mimic the process of scientific knowledge production but are geared towards a different end. Results. Our findings indicate that an explicit emphasis on societal contribution not only propositions a different purpose of research, but also changes the logic of research along its entire construction. The impact logic mimics the creation of scientific facts; nevertheless, as it is geared towards a different end, it hermetically seals itself from criticism as any form of scrutiny would otherwise undermine its own legitimacy. Conclusion. We conclude that only explicit acknowledgement of the adverse potential of the impact agenda can maintain science’s benefit to society. We argue that an emphasis on the advancement of knowledge, as opposed to impact, can maintain innovation and preempt social tension. The contribution of this paper lies in identifying the societal influence of the scientific ideal of truth, and articulating the unintended consequences of the impact agenda as the emerging impact or starve paradigm.

Opis:
In the contemporary global world the various models of making and distributing science are cultivated. The particular model of institutionalized science can significantly determine the quality of working both as a scientist and as a student. Research upon science environment in the meaning of investigation  the framework of science influences for example the system of communication between different actors engaged in science, good practices, possibilities offered by particular context of science and facilities of acquiring the scientific knowledge etc. It this view the presented paper finds its justification directing analysis towards the quality of making science. Hence the paradigm of sociological science policy is strongly needed. The paper is going to reconstruct the key models which recognize contexts of making science and its numerous dimensions. The research is based on the set of literature founded through the digital key words searching process. The chosen literature recalls the most significant research based on science policy. Consequently the described models tend towards the most globalized and open models of making science to show the path of required changes into still founded coercive science structures mostly institutionalized by long-lasting tradition. The final conclusion states that more concrete steps in reformulating the science policy are required to obtain the desirable model of open science and at the same time to develop the high standing scientific priorities.

The new edition in Italian of the articles by the Polish microbiologist and philosopher Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) edited by Francesco Coniglione offers the opportunity for some considerations around this significant scholar. Fleck anticipates Kuhn's ideas as well as those of the sociology of science. For him, any epistemology that does not take psychological and sociological methods into account, or that does not concern itself with economics, technology, art, and even politics, is an epistemology imaginabilis. Here we discuss some key points of the essays collected in the book, some observations taken from the rich introduction of the editor, and an inevitable question: Why has Fleck been neglected for so long?

In German-language communication studies, the long-running debate about the in- creasingly important practical relevance of the subject is currently being picked up once again. In this article a refl ection on the history of the subject since 1945 will be used to formulate a predic- tion for the possible development of the subject and the practice-related research being undertaken within it. Four basic “currencies” of academic success will be drawn upon to do this: reputation, public attention, funding, and evaluation results. Th ese assist in constructing an alternative chron- ology of the subject, which also demonstrates the social forces which aff ect the “currencies.” Th is leads to the conclusion that the current incentive structures for each individual scientist in com- munication studies could lead to a bisection of the subject. One group will orientate itself increas- ingly on the requirements of modern science-based society and predominantly solve practical problems, while the second group will remain more dedicated to the classic understanding of science.

Science at the state level consists of two distinct and heterogeneous systems: the global science system and national science systems. National science systems are deeply embedded in global science, and states seek to use global knowledge for domestic economic needs. However, harnessing the wealth of global knowledge can only be done through scientists. Consequently, the scientific strength of states in practice depends on the scientific strength of individual scientists. Their ability to collaborate internationally and to tap into the global scientific network is crucial. By remaining outside it and working within local research programs, the academic community risks being marginalized, losing the interest of national research funding patrons, and losing the ability to influence the development of science.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the history of the Science Policy Research Unit and place it within the broader framework of the University of Sussex and the intellectual context of the period. This brief introduction helps to understand the origins of the Unit and the role played by such figures as Chris Freeman, Geoffrey Oldham, Jackie Fuller, and Roy MacLeod. The description of intellectual context includes the influence of sociological approaches to science which were strong in the second half of the 20th century.
Celem artykułu jest omówienie historii jednostki badawcze Science Policy Research Unit, wskazanie jej miejsca i sposobu funkcjonowania w ramach struktur Uniwersytetu w Sussex oraz przedstawienie kontekstu „intelektualnego” towarzyszącego jej powstaniu. To krótkie wprowadzenie pozwala zrozumieć genezę powstania jednostki oraz rolę jaką odgrywali w niej m.in.

We examined the male-female collaboration practices of all internationally visible Polish university professors (N = 25,463) based on their Scopus-indexed publications from 2009–2018 (158,743 journal articles). We merged a national registry of 99,935 scientists with the Scopus publication database, using probabilistic and deterministic record linkage. Our database (“The Polish Science Observatory”) included all professors with at least a doctoral degree employed in 85 research-involved universities. We determined an “individual publication portfolio” for every professor. The gender homophily principle (publishing predominantly with scientists of the same sex) was found to apply to male scientists - but not to females. The majority of male scientists collaborate solely with males; most female scientists, in contrast, do not collaborate with females at all. Gender homophily in research-intensive institutions proved stronger for males than for females. Finally, we used a multi-dimensional fractional logit regression model to estimate the impact of gender and other individual-level and institutional-level independent variables on gender homophily in research collaboration.

This text is an interpretation of Norbert Elias’s biography, his autobiographical writings, and certain aspects of his work in light of Patrick Baert’s positioning theory. Beginning from a critical analysis of the story of Elias’s life, career, and scholarship, through a reconstruction of the typical properties of his writing style and academic abilities, the author uses Elias to describe an intellectual strategy which she calls ‘balancing on the margins’. She considers it a legitimate strategy for maintaining oneself in the academic field—under certain conditions more productive and less risky than a strategy aimed at occupying a central position in the academic field.

The number of publications inspired by Bruno Latour’s social thought has significantly grown in Poland over the last decade. Among them there are theoretical analyses, research programms as well as projects of social engineering. This situation makes it urgent to examine the credibility of Latour’s vision of science and society. The present article claims that the premises as well as arguments of the French thinker are not only fallacious but also dangerous. A number of absurdities following from the actor-network theory become evident in the works of the Polish followers of Latour. Thus the article focuses on selected examples of them. In the conclusion the author indicates certain advantages for Latour’s readers and formulates several hypotheses about the possible reasons for Latour’s growing popularity.

In the paper I address the problem of consolidation of the borders of the world of science by scientific institutions—in this case, Polish scientific societies of various fields. Basing on the analysis of the statutes of selected societies, I formulate a list of research questions that concern the role of scientific societies in distinguishing be tween what is considered scientific and what is not. These questions can be used in a more in-depth research. I adopt a constructivist perspective, focus on the ways in which science is produced and separated from pseudoscience, and do not address the (in)accuracy of claims rejected by the scientific world.
