Opis:
SMEs face a challenge of responding to inescapable changes as a result of various internal and external factors. As they attempt to cope with the changing conditions, they might face attitudinal and behavioral shifts. They need to develop new ways of thinking about their operations and dealing with various groups of stakeholders. Adoption of more sustainable approach might contribute to the success of a company in terms of cost impact, innovation impact, environmental impact and stakeholder impact. The aim of the article is to define the degree to which SMEs understand ideas behind corporate social responsibility (CSR) and to determine the degree of maturity of SMEs with regard to CSR. Of particular interest is to identify the dimensions of CSR engagement and to verify which component: social, environmental or economic, plays a dominant role for SMEs, which will further inform about the fact whether CSR has operational or rather strategic character. The article presents selected results of empirical research conducted by the Institute of Management at Warsaw School of Economics in 2016.

Opis:
The most careful and consolidated risk analysis methods, as FTA, ETA, FMEA/FMECA, focus attention on system reliability. But, looking at OHS, a deep analysis on European data on accidents at work and on work environment in general, shows how reliability is only one aspect of safety problem. These methods then are hardly adaptable when the main aim is to obtain a quantitative assessment of risk for workers; besides, Rother methodologies are nearest to OHS but give only qualitative results like HAZOP, or base their analysis on notdimensional values, fixed by analyst on personal experiences, like methods proposed by UNI EN 1050, by standard MIL-STD-882c and by AISS. RATE is proposed as a new quantitative methodology for OHS, particularly dedicated to SMEs considered as the most interesting from these aspect. The paper compares hypothesis and procedures which traditional quantitative methodologies and RATE are based on, to give evidence at the main approach aspects that have to be modified in order to move from reliability to OHS.

The paper aims to identify external determinants of the development of small and medium-sized enterprises and assess their impact on the functioning of these entities in Poland. Meeting this objective required: identifying determinants of the development of SMEs, determining the current development situation of the surveyed enterprises and examining the impact of external determinants on the development of SMEs. The implementation of the above-presented goals was based on the following assumptions: (i) the current situation of the surveyed enterprises is determined with the use of quantitative indicators (turnover volume, number of employees, market share, profit levels) (ii) the analysis of external determinants encompasses three components of the environment: the macro-environment, the meso-environment and the micro-environment, (iii) in each analysed area there are separate analyses conducted for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, enabling greater precision in the identification of external determinants of development for each category of businesses.

Research conducted by some authors indicates that an internationalization strategy is less effective if SMEs cooperate in an informal manner. This could be due to the fact that informal cooperation may promote opportunistic behaviour. A formal way of cooperation can be implemented through cluster organizations.

Opis:
Firm growth is a central topic in the literature on entrepreneurship, strategic management and industrial organization, among others. For an individual entrepreneurial firm, growth is an evidence of the return of the entrepreneur’s investment and self-fulfillment. Growth is also a condition of survival for young and small businesses, as growing firms are found less vulnerable to failure than non-growers (Stam et al., 2006). The macroeconomic importance of firm expansion was recognized in the 1980s, when the phenomenon of gazelles or high-growth firms was first described as those capable of intense size increases within a limited time span (Birch, 1981; Birch & Medoff, 1994; Birch et al., 1994; Storey, 1994; Coad, 2009; Acs et al., 2008). According to empirical research gazelles form a small fraction of business population. However, they represent a disproportionally large share in new job creation (Storey, 1994; Coad 2009; Stam et al., 2006; Acs et al., 2008). Growing firms are also more likely to generate innovations, specifically product innovations involving technological advancements (Coad, 2009; Schreyer, 2000; Storey, 1994; Smallbone et al., 1995). Both researchers and policy makers interested in expansion, focus on rapidly growing firms and on small and medium-sized enterprises. This interest in high-growth enterprises is justified by the observation that the remaining population either grows slowly or does not perform any expansion (Coad, 2009). At the same time, gazelles are predominantly young, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The dynamics and economic contribution of firms’ growth are negatively associated with age and size, which corresponds to the observation that job losses are generated mainly by the established, large and non-growth firms (Acs et al., 2008). As firm expansion and growth have proved to be a condition for competitive advantage both at the level of individual firms and at the level of the economy at large, the phenomenon of firm growth has become a focus of research. One of the main purposes of this increasingly preeminent research stream is to provide recommendations for firm management and for economic policy, undergoing the risks and challenges in achieving expansion. However, in order to provide these recommendations, we need to better comprehend the entrepreneurial motivations and the attitudes towards growth, the stimuli and impediments to company growth, the potential mechanisms to firm growth and modes of expansion. This special issue seeks to contribute to the knowledge base on the growth process of entrepreneurial firms, which is an emerging stream of research on firm growth. This emerging stream complements the existing perspectives on expansion, which are more focused on: 1) companies’ internal adaptation mechanisms, as reflected in life cycle models, and on 2) determinants and predictors of firm growth (Dobbs & Hamilton, 2006; McKelvie & Wiklund, 2010). We present the focus provided in this special issue as complementary to existing approaches, aiming also to contribute with new findings in addressing some yet underexplored areas. The emerging stream of growth process refers to why and how growth is implemented through proactive entrepreneurial actions and decision-making processes, which are presented in complex organizational and environmental contexts, including cause-effect mechanisms in the history of company development. This holistic approach is a constituent feature of studies on the growth process. It differentiates from the currently dominating focus on the determinants of individual firm’s growth and from the earlier stage models of internal adaptation to the challenges imposed by expansion. In the following sections of this introductory paper, we discuss first the stream of research on the growth process in connection with the extant literature on firm growth. Then we highlight the contribution of the individual papers included in this special issue as well as the contribution aimed at by the entire issue as a whole. Finally, the conclusion delineates some potential pathways for further research as a result of the findings provided by the special issue.

Opis:
Companies in Poland can realize their goals by assuring the necessary organizational conditions and by partially restricting opportunistic behavior within the limits sufficient to take stable coopetitive actions. In the face of the present financial crisis, innovativeness is one of the basic parameters in evaluation of the SME sector in Poland. The goal of the present article is to show that enhanced coopetition of the re-searched entities with huge holdings or concerns from Poland and with economic entities from the remaining countries of the European Union is a sine qua non of improving the level of innovativeness in the SME sector. The coopetition is defined as a phenomenon of simultaneous cooperation and competition of at least two entities, the aim of which is to better realize their goals or to work towards the common end. If levels of competition and cooperation are low, companies assume the strate-gies of the owners of micro-, small- or medium-sized enterprises. Being a condition necessary to improve the level of innovativeness in the Polish SME sector, coopetition is characteristic of the companies whose activities are narrowly specialized.

The need to standardize procedures and tackle similar questions of auditing, risk management, controlling and similar related topics is vast, especially, but not exclusively in multinational companies. However, smaller companies more and more find themselves in a position to act more globally – or at least internationally – in terms of sourcing as well as sales. This brings new needs for and new foci on topics as Internal Audit as well as Corruption Prevention. This article gives some ideas, hints and challenges towards these topics. In order to clarify the views expressed in this article, the author first gives some general information about internal audit, such as its definition, tasks and objectives, its historical development, legal background, structure and implementation, in order to make clear, on which aspects and understanding the argumentation is based. This introduction will provide a theoretical basis for the description and identification of the potential problems and possible challenges in an international perspective.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to show how a global network affects the process of internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The choice of this group of companies stems from two main reasons: their contribution and role in the economy and limited resources in relation to large companies. Based on the characteristics of the internationalisation process, using conventional and unconventional models, this article presents the universal features od the Internet affecting the change of their shape in the time-space dimension. There was proposed a thesis, that the active use of the global network by SME in every area of activity business (sourcing, production, trade, human resources etc.) significantly reduces barriers to their entry into foreign markets and contributes to improve the efficiency of operations. This article is a review and it is based on the literature in the field of management and marketing.

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to create a tool for monitoring the growth and development factors of SMEs in the educational services industry. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the goal of the paper, key factors were identified, and then the Leppard questionnaire was adapted. A tool was created, which consists of questions related to the use of key growth and development factors. Findings: The questionnaire has 29 questions divided into 9 groups. The respondent's task is to determine on the Likert scale 1-5 (1 - means definitely disagree, and 5 - strongly agree) the level of truth of the statement with regard to the organisation that the respondent owns or manages. Research limitations/implications: The most severe disadvantage of the proposed tool seems to be its subjective nature. To reduce subjectivity, the Delphi method may be useful. Practical implications: The proposed tool can be an essential source of knowledge for entrepreneurs. Thanks to this, they can focus on the most important aspects of the development of their enterprises and will be able to increase the competitiveness of their business. Originality/value: This paper reveals the potential uses of a new tool for monitoring the growth and development of SME.
