Mangrove forest protection is an essential solution for mitigating the impacts of natural disasters in coastal zones and climate change. Integrated mangrove-shrimp farming (IMSF) system has been promoted as a sustainable livelihood that can provide income for farmers and protect mangrove forests. However, the productivity of shrimp is limited. Therefore, to enhance the revenue for farmers, improving the value of shrimp products is a good option. Organic shrimp farming practices following the EU aquaculture organic standards have been previously applied in some areas of the Mekong delta. This study was conducted to compare technical, financial characteristics and environmental parameters between the applied (i.e., organic farms) and non-applied (i.e., non-organic farms) standards of Naturland, aiming to support the development of ecological shrimp farming and contribute towards green development. The study was carried out in Nhung Mien mangrove forest, Ngoc Hien district, Ca Mau province, Vietnam. Fifty organic farms and 50 non-organic farms were directly interviewed using structured questionnaires. And then, three farms in each system were selected for monitoring water quality. Results showed that the average mangrove coverage was 54.1% in the organic IMSF system and significantly different from the non-organic IMSF system (p<0.05). Total shrimp yield, total income and total profits tended to increase in organic IMSF system and the selling shrimp price increased by 10% compared to the conventional price. The study showed that following organic farming methods could provide higher income for farmers and a better chance to mitigate natural disasters and climate change impacts.

Opis:
Acid sulfate soils in coastal wetland areas are particularly vulnerable to land-use changes. We identifid the potential impacts of land-use changes in the Can Gio coastal wetland area in Vietnam due to the reclamation of acid sulfate soils from shrimp farms. Our study applied the support of vector machine algorithm in ENVI software to observe land-use changes from 1995 to 2015, using Landsat Thematic Mapper and Operational Land Imager data. We classifid the land use of the study area into four major classes including vegetation, bare land, dedicated land and aquaculture land. Our study successfully met the overall classifiation accuracy requirement above 95% and kappa statistics above 0.95. Between 1995 and 2006, about 2,938.05 ha of bare land and 1,464.66 ha of vegetation (mangrove forest) were converted to aquaculture land. In contrast, between 2006 and 2015, 2,423.88 ha of aquaculture land converted back to bare land, mainly related to the abandonment of shrimp ponds due to crop failure and disease. The disturbance of acid sulfate soils through initial soil reclamation and subsequent fallowing is considered a key reason for hastening and extending soil acidifiation in the study area. We collected 144 topsoil samples from 17 fallowed ponds in two batches, and 142 of these were acidic: 128 samples were extremely and strongly acidic (pH < 5.5), 14 samples were moderately and slightly acid (pH between 5.5 and 6.5), and only two samples were neutral (pH over 6.5).

This study aims to assess the quality of lagoon water used as a dumping ground for shrimp farming waste. The research uses the descriptive method. The research was conducted at the Shrimp Cultivation Site in the Banaran Kulon Progo Village, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research focuses on physicochemical parameters, including temperature, pH, total suspended solid (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), and phosphate. The sampling technique is based on SNI 6989.57:2008. Sampling was carried out 48 times in 3 lagoons during rainy and dry seasons. Dialysis data was descriptively classified with the help of Storage and Retrieval of Water Quality Data System (STORET) and water quality was generally classified as C (moderately polluted) and D (heavily polluted) categories in dry and rainy seasons. The results showed that in the rainy season the highest pH, nitrate and phosphate levels of 8.3, and 6.1 and 20.8 mg∙dm-3, were up to 15% less than in the dry season in the same point. Thus, it can be concluded that these values from the STORET in the dry season are larger than those in the rainy season. The study results are expected to become a basis for the evaluation of the quality of shrimp farming wastewater so that environmental health can be controlled and the risk of waste pollution reduced.

The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus was recorded for the first time in Lithuanian waters in 2015. The species was detected in three sites in the Curonian Lagoon (on two buoys in the lagoon strait and the harbour, and one littoral sampling site) and in the mouth of the Šventoji River. The species presence in the buoy fouling suggests the involvement of shipping in species introduction. Most likely D. villosus has arrived to the Curonian Lagoon with commercial ships, while the invasion into the mouth of the Šventoji River may be associated with leisure shipping as the port situated therein is not currently functioning. Further northward expansion of the killer shrimp in the Baltic Sea basin seems very probable. As the species is highly aggressive, alterations of local macroinvertebrate assemblages can also be predicted.

The Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome in the Sudetes, the NE Bohemian Massif, embraces two formations of felsic gneisses of controversial origin and evolution. Our study shows that despite similar geochemical signatures, they carry systematic minor differences in mineral, isotope, zircon and geothermobarometric characteristics. Four variants of the Gierałtów gneisses include migmatites and have a longer structural history than the Śnieżnik augen orthogneisses. U-Pb SHRIMP analyses yielded U-Pb ages of ~500 Ma for cores and ~498 Ma for wide outer parts of zircon grains in the twice-folded Gierałtów gneisses, and an age of ~500 Ma for a discordant neosome vein. Neoproterozoic metasediments were among precursors of the lithologically diversified Gierałtów Gneiss Formation. First deformation, metamorphism, and migmatisation of these rocks occurred at 515–475 Ma and overlapped with the development and emplacement of a porphyritic S-type granite precursor to the Śnieżnik Gneiss Formation. The metagranite (= Śnieżnik augen orthogneiss) embraced migmatitic xenoliths. Zircon grains from such xenoliths revealed distorted and replaced cores which yielded U-Pb ages that dispersed around 507–487 Ma, whilst wide darker poorly zoned outgrowths yielded ages from ~343 Ma to ~325 Ma (mean ~340 Ma). These outgrowths were interpreted as a record of Carboniferous metamorphism assisted by rich Zr- and U-carrying fluids. The Variscan metamorphic overprint was heterogeneous, and variously affected rocks of the two gneiss formations.

In this study, the shrimp shell-derived chitosan was coated onto rice husk-derived biochar to form chitosan/biochar bio-composite beads. The physicochemical properties of biochar (BC) and chitosan/biochar beads (CS@BC) were characterized by BET, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and pHpzc analyses, which were then tested for their capacity to remove Safranin O (SO) from water. In kinetics, the pseudo-second-order model was found to well represent experimental data, indicating the adsorption was mainly a chemical process. The intra-particle diffusion model was not the sole rate-limiting step, because the results did not pass through the origin. In isotherms, both the Langmuir and Freundlich models described well the equilibrium adsorption data. The CS@BC adsorbent showed adsorption capacity at 77.94 mg/g for SO, which is higher than BC adsorbent with 62.25 mg/g (experimental conditions: pH ~ 7.0, dosage = 0.2 g, contact time = 240 min, and temperature = 298 K). The findings revealed that the biochar-loaded chitosan can improve the adsorption capacity of SO. It is predicted that the enhancement in the functional groups (i.e., -NH2 and -OH groups) of CS@BC could contribute to the electrostatic interactions and the complexation between SO and CS@BC, thereby enhancing the Safranin O adsorption from water.

The fairy shrimp is a freshwater crustacean found in both temporary and permanent freshwaters. In Thailand, fairy shrimp are farmed as live food for ornamental fish. This study aimed to investigate the bacterial compositions in two fairy shrimp species, Branchinella thailandensis and Streptocephalus sirindhornae. Both species were cultured, and total DNA was extracted. The V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced using Illumina Miseq. All data were analyzed by Illumina 16S Metagenomics (version 1.0.1) workflow in Base Space- Illumina. Each read was blasted against the Illumina-curated version of the Greengenes database to determine the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) corresponding to the 16S rRNA gene sequence. The results showed that the Shanon-Weiner diversity index of bacterial compositions in B. thailandensis and S. sirindhornae were 2.135 and 3.122, respectively. The evenness and genus-level richness of the bacterial composition in B. thailandensis were 0.364 and 354 genera, respectively. The dominant bacterium found in B. thailandensis was Nevskia. In S. sirindhornae, the evenness and genus-level richness of the bacterial composition were 0.521 and 400 genera, respectively. Azohydromonas was the dominant bacterium. Our results showed that the compositions and proportions of bacterial communities were specific to each species of fairy shrimp. This study will be useful for further experiments in aquaculture and ecological studies related to symbiotic interaction.

Opis:
New petrographic and geochemical data show some differences between Variscan Bt-Ms granites occurring either as small plutons or dykes in the Strzelin Massif (SW Poland). The granites of the Gromnik and Górka Sobocka plutons are rich in micas and crystallized from "wet" magmas; the granites in the dykes and in the Gębczyce pluton are mica-poorer and cordierite-bearing rocks, derived from “dryer” magmas. The lower initial eNd values in the Bt-Ms granites of the dykes, compared with those in the plutons, reflect a more "crustal" signature of the former, possibly due to local crustal assimilation, via AFC, shortly before emplacement. Much more radiogenic initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios in the dykes, up to 0.726, further suggest the involvement of extraneous, hydrous crustal fluids enriched in 87Sr during the evolution of late-stage magma derivatives. The new U-Pb SHRIMP zircon age of 296 ± 6 Ma for the Gębczyce Bt-Ms granite shows that this body belongs to the third stage of magmatism in the Strzelin Massif. The U-Pb SHRIMP zircon data for the Bt-Ms granite dykes provide ages similar to those of their host rocks: c. 295 Ma for the Gęsiniec tonalite and the enclosed Bt-Ms granite, and c. 285 Ma for the Strzelin biotite granite and its Bt-Ms granite dykes. These new data from peraluminous rock-types complement our previous studies focused on the tonalites, granodiorites and biotite granites, and shed light on the late-stage igneous evolution of the Strzelin Massif.

Opis:
The Gęsiniec composite intrusion in the northern part of the Strzelin Massif (Fore-Sudetic Block, SW Poland) was formed in the course of three late Variscan magmatic episodes: tonalitic I, granodioritic, and tonalitic II/granitic. The age of the Gęsiniec tonalite, 295 š3 Ma, is the same as that of another tonalite body in the southern part of the Strzelin Massif, the Kalinka tonalite. The younger biotite-muscovite (Bt-Ms) granite, in a dyke cutting the Gęsiniec tonalite, has an indistinguishable isotopic age of 295 š5 Ma; it contains, however, inherited zircons with ages between ca. 1.5 Ga to 374 Ma, similar to zircon ages from surrounding gneisses. This suggests that the magmatic protolith of gneisses and the magma of the Bt-Ms granite could have come from similar sources, or that the magma of the Bt-Ms granite was contaminated by the gneisses. Both the tonalite and Bt-Ma granite represent a late stage of the granitoid magmatism in the eastern part of the Variscan orogen.

The Saxothuringian Terrane defined in the western part of the Bohemian Massif is regarded to have easterly continuations in the Karkonosze–Izera Massif, the Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Belt and the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome. All these units comprise Early Ordovician (~500 Ma) metagranites associated with mica schists. Even more to the east, ~500 Ma metagranites and metasedimentary rocks occur also in the Strzelin Massif of the East Sudetes, where they are known as the pale and dark Stachów gneisses, respectively. Altogether, these rocks form the Stachów Complex which was thrust on the Strzelin Complex of the Brunovistulicum Terrane during the Variscan Orogeny. The contribution presents lines of evidence for a Saxothuringian affinity of the Stachów Complex rocks: (1) the new SHRIMP U-Pb age data of zircons from both the pale and dark Stachów gneisses; (2) the indication that the zircon age spectra from the ~500 Ma granitoids and their accompanying metasedimentary rocks are similar to those found in other parts of the Sudetes; (3) the “Armorican” age pattern of inherited zircons of the pale Stachów gneisses, as also observed in the Saxothuringian Terrane; (4) the similarity of trace elements and Sm-Nd isotope data of the Stachów gneisses and correlative rocks from the Karkonosze–Izera Massif and the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome.

Opis:
Petrological data and recently published U/Pb zircon SHRIMP ages reveal a protracted Variscan magmatic evolution in the Strzelin Massif (SW Poland), with three main stages of granitoid plutonism: 1 – tonalitic I, 2 – granodioritic and 3 – tonalitic II/granitic. The granitoids of the second and third stages form the Strzelin intrusion that is composed of three varieties: medium-grained biotite granite, fine-grained biotite granite and fine-grained biotite-muscovite granite. New SHRIMP data show that the medium-grained and fine-grained biotite granites comprise different zircon populations that reflect complex and prolonged plutonic processes. Two distinct magmatic events seem to be represented by well-defined zircon populations with apparent 206Pb/238U ages of 303 ± 2 Ma in the medium-grained biotite granite, and 283 ± 8 Ma in the fine-grained biotite granite. These dates, however, do not necessarily reflect the true magmatic ages, possibly being “rejuvenated” by radiogenic lead loss in zircons (impossible to resolve based on routine SHRIMP data). Based on field evidence, the third variety, the biotite-muscovite granite, postdates both types of biotite granites. The petrographic and geochemical features, including Nd isotope signature, along with various zircon inheritance patterns and ages, suggest that the parental magmas of the three granites originated from different crustal sources and were emplaced during three successive magmatic pulses.
