Opis:
Tekst jest wspomnieniem o Józefie Marcinie Szczublewskim, aktorze, dziennikarzu, redaktorze, muzealniku i wykładowcy, ale przede wszystkim historyku teatru i biografie. Badacze teatru często nazywali go "Szczublem", a on sam używał tego przydomka w swoich licznych i często zabawnych zapiskach. W 1952 roku rozpoczął współpracę z Sekcją Teatralną Państwowego Instytutu Sztuki. Z zapałem studiował materiały archiwalne i prowadził równoległe badania archiwów prasowych. Tę właśnie formę i tytuł autor wykorzystywał najchętniej. Do ulubionego przedmiotu badań i bohaterki powrócił wkrótce, publikując Żywot Modrzejewskiej (1975), a po niemal dwóch dekadach – Żywot Sienkiewicza (1989).
This article is a reminiscence of Józef Marcin Szczublewski, an actor, journalist, editor, museum professional, and lecturer, but most of all, he was a theatre historian and biographer. Theatre scholars often call him “Szczubel”, and he used this nickname himself in his numerous, and often funny, notes. In 1952 he started collaborating with the Theatre Section of the State Institute of Art. He studied archival materials and conducted parallel press archives research with zeal. He published his findings in Pamiętnik Teatralny, and was the quarterly’s Secretary of the Editorial Board in 1962–1964. He soon became, along with Jerzy Got, a renowned biographer of Helena Modrzejewska. Warsaw theatres of the 19th and 20th centuries were a second area of his studies. The Institute of Art awarded Szczublewski his doctoral degree in 1971 based on his dissertation Żywot Osterwy (The Life of Osterwa, published in 1971), completed under the supervision of Prof. Zbigniew Raszewski. The biography had the form of a chronicle that put wide-ranging archival documentation into order. This was the form (and title) that became the author’s favourite. He soon came back to his favourite object of study and heroine to publish Żywot Modrzejewskiej (The Life of Modrzejewska, 1975), and after almost two decades followed it with Żywot Sienkiewicza (The Life of Sienkiewicz, 1989).

Opis:
The paper presents cases, found in Polish academic life, of exceptional and moving violations of moral standards bound with the ideal of a scholar. These cases were made public by actors themselves (Wincenty Lutoslawski, Eugeniusz Romer), uncompromising historians (Henryk Barycz, Stanislaw Pigon) or widely known decision-makers (Rev. Bronislaw Zongollowicz). They argued that the ethics of scholars has not only normative character, but also a descriptive one, in many cases different that normative decisions. So conceived normative ethics should encompass the intimate life, particularly if it were made public due to a scandal. Such a scandal should call not condemnation, but intellectual reflection.

In this article I present the Roman Law scholars of the Jan Kazimierz University of Lwów and their travel abroad for the purposes of scholarship. Lwów’s scholars developed their knowledge and skills by working with prominent German, Austrian, French and Italian personalities in legal studies. The scholarships awarded by the Emperor Franz Joseph I Foundation (Fundacja im. Cesarza Franciszka Józefa I), the National Culture Fund (Fundusz Kultury Narodowej), and the Emil Parnas Foundation (Fundacja im. Emila Parnasa) helped them to further their education abroad. Leon Piniński and Marceli Chlamtacz, professors of the Jan Kazimierz University, studied abroad in the late 19th century. Leon Piniński went to universities in Leipzig, Berlin and Vienna, where he worked with Heinrich Dernburg and Bernhard Windscheid. Marceli Chlamtacz travelled to Vienna and Berlin, where he collaborated with Professors Franz Hofmann, Adolf Exler, and Alfred Pernice. Professor Wacław Osuchowski studied abroad in the early 1930s, first in Rome, and subsequently in Munich and Paris. The fourth of the scholars presented in the article, Dr. Edward Gintowt-Dziewałtowski, a research assistant in the Chair of Roman Law, spent four years in Vienna, Innsbruck, Rome, and Palermo in the 1930s.

Opis:
The article constitutes the attempt to formulate remarks and hypotheses referring to the mentality of the elite of Toruń’s burghers in the 17th and the first half of the 18th century, mainly on the basis of the research concerning the history of the culture of Toruń in this period. Toruń’s elite consisted of the few rich members of the proud patriciate and the group of the so called “Scholars” (Gelehrte) – people of various backgrounds, who, having acquired the university education, made a political career in the town and representatives of professions requiring a much better education” priests, teachers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and officials of the city authorities. The factors which united all those people in one group was the Protestant religious community (Lutherans), family, social and economic connections. The mentality of Toruń’s inhabitants was affected greatly by the life in a big city where goods were exchanged and people travelled from the north to the south and the east, and from the west to the north and east. Toruń was traditionally connected with Gdańsk and the Baltic Sea, Germany, the Netherlands, England and the Scandinavian countries. The mentality of the patriciate and burghers was imbued with religiousness in the Lutheran or Calvinist sense. The Protestant model of personal life filled with science and work prevailed. At the same time the mentality of Toruń’s burghers, in the first place those who spoke Polish and had direct contacts with noblemen and Catholics, was affected by the Baroque-Sarmatian models promoting the joy of life, the pursuit of luxury and presenting oneself from the best side. A case in point is Jakub Kazimierz Rubinkowski (1668–1749) – a nobleman and burgher of Toruń. This postmaster and burgrave of Toruń combined the features typical of the mentality of the noblemen and burghers. Toruń’s patriciate adopted many customs from noblemen and magnates, which was reflected in fashion, ceremonies, funerals, weddings, etc. Like noblemen, patricians purchased land, set up small “folwarks” and erected summer mansions in the countryside. Inhabitants of Toruń were mentally connected with inhabitants of Gdańsk. Yet, the mentality of Gdańsk’s inhabitants was mainly affected by the fact of living in a harbor open to the sea. Toruń was more closely connected with the Polish-Sarmatian background. What should be underlined is the ability to adapt and co-exist of various groups along with the ability to create a coherent whole. Toruń’s burghers were capable of reconciliating the material (the sphere of business and economy) with the spiritual (the sphere of belief and existential fear).

In common views scholars belong to a group of people either non-believing in the existence of God and his creational powers, or at least distancing themselves from several of such beliefs which is shared by the majority of the society. The research in this matter shows that this issue is quite diverse when put into practice, also in such a leading in scientific achievements country like the United States. Although this research confirms that the major part of American scholars is either people declaring their non-faith in God, or at least distancing themselves in a significant way from it, there are many (both in social and natural sciences) of them who accept beliefs which seem to be in a striking contradiction with the knowledge on man and the natural world. One of such people recalled in these remarks is Alvin C. Planting. His argument with Daniel Dennett shows how far the standards of scientific correctness of thought accepted by American scholars might differ.

The opinions of scholars about their own academic and literary achievements, their evaluation of the state of science and scientific writing as well as tips addressed to the young adepts of science are an important source of information about the history of science and scientific writing. While discussing the issue of a scientific book and the scientific publishing movement, such statements deserve closer attention of bibliologists. The article presents the views and recommendations of a prominent biologist Jan Tur (1875–1942) that concern writing and publishing scientific works and are included in his book Nauka i uczony (The science and a scholar). In the light of the condition of the contemporary movement of scientific publication, the scientist’s opinions from over 100 years ago on the necessity of writing productivity, languages and types of the scientific publication as well as collectivity of works become up-to-date and stimulate for discussion.

The issue of criticism and dogmatism is one of those problems which various sciences contended with in the past and which is difficult to deal with today. It may seem that criticism and dogmatism are completely mutually exclusive, but the history of sciences shows that in the past they constituted two options mutually exclusive in one respect and complementary in the other. I present here such a mutual exclusiveness and complementarity using examples from the area of philosophy and theology. I am convinced, however, that this situation is also present in other disciplines.

European scholars – patronage – rescue program – interdisciplinary pursuits
Opis:
The New School for Social Research was founded as an institution where intellectuals and artists could openly exchange ideas and theories, free from censure or political pressure. The school's founders believed that in a world engulfed by political turmoil and modern warfare, the free exchange of different ideas regarding politics, aesthetics and other intellectual pursuits was key to ensuring a just and sane world. The founders based the structure of The New School on the German Volkshochschulen, a school model that stressed the importance of adult education and a diversity of intellectual and interdisciplinary pursuits. Since its inception, The New School has maintained close ties with European ideas and philosophies of Rousseau, Kant, Goethe, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud, among many others. Sensing a dire need to provide safe haven for many of Europe's scholars and intellectuals, Alvin Johnson established a new graduate department in 1933 (coinciding with Hitler's appointment to German Chancellor), called the University in Exile. With the financial assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation and other philanthropy groups, the University in Exile was founded as a new graduate division within The New School and, more importantly, as a rescue program. Nearly two hundred European scholars and professors received visas and teaching jobs in the U.S. from the University in Exile. While many of them taught at The New School, there was never any stipulation from the University in Exile that they were required to do so. Alvin Johnson's main goal was simply to get people out of harm's way.

This paper will analyze the shaping of supposed Marian apparitions in Pesqueira, a Brazilian city located in Pernambuco, as part of a series of events related to the devotions to Our Lady representations in modern and contemporary periods. Based on the propositions of Cultural History, regional newspapers, ecclesiastical documents, and personal letters were used in order to understand the relation of these events to political, economic, and social issues of the first half of the 20th century. The analysis will suggest that the events in Pesqueira were connected to other religious representations, such as the apparitions in Lourdes (France) and Fatima (Portugal), reinforcing the image of the 20th century as the “golden century” of apparitions to members and followers of the Catholic Church. Therefore, this work highlights the central performance of ecclesiastics, scholars, and devotees in the shaping of new devotions and cults in a specific space in Latin America.

The article aims to compare the museums which belonged to two clergymen: L. J. Szersznik of Cieszyn and J. K. Kluk of Ciechanowiec. Their collections were created on the basis of the Enlightenment ideas which they followed in their lives. Establishing these institutions, the founders were guided by similar aims and intentions as well as similar research interests. They strove to propagate knowledge, especially natural science, by collecting exhibits useful for the study based on observation. In spite of the limited financial resources for exhibits, their collections significantly contributed to satisfying intellectual curiosity. The study shows that the actions of individuals, even if they are in an unfavourable material situation, are important for the development of culture. The aforementioned clergymen and scholars created two institutions, the purpose of which was to promote education by means of observation. The museums which they created, though different in size, were expressions of their personal fascination and certain regional representatives of culture and science, which had to be propagated. The aim of these institutions was not only to collect exhibits but also to educate; both priests had similar intentions: raising people’s intellectual level by creating collections (books and exhibits). Szersznik emphasized the social mission more clearly, while Kluk, thanks to his scientific publications, broadened knowledge (especially in agriculture) of many people. They disseminated knowledge not only among educated people but also wanted to show the world to the wider public, including burghers or peasants. Szersznik sought to create an open museum, and Kluk provided in his writings what he had observed and explored.

Opis:
This paper is part of the trend of reading the relevance of the works by John Amos Comenius for modern times. The author examines Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart, a unique literary work by the Czech scholar. The article aims to present the image of the world of scholars presented in the mentioned work and expose its message for the contemporary academic world. Although Comenius devoted many of his works to the project of transforming the world of academia, the examined work is rather an allegorical story criticising the condition of the scholars’ world than a project of its reform. In this article, the author chooses not to complement this critical vision with what can be learned from Comenius’ other works, and instead focuses only on the very picture of the world of scholars presented in the work under study. As a result, the author concludes that the most important message to the contemporary world of academia from Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart is a call for a moral-spiritual renewal.
