Opis:
The author sought to show the image of Podlasia, as it was described by young Stefan Żeromski in the years of 1887-1890 in his Diaries. The future great Polish writer was already then distinguished with an extraordinary ability to observe the surrounding world, therefore his reports can be regarded as a faithful description of the then reality. The excerpts from the Diary quoted here show, first of all, the fortunes of the people of Podlasia under Russian partition, thus various manifestations of the process of Russification and the persecution of Unites.

Opis:
Stefan Żeromski was an expert in medical vocabulary. This was a result of his interest in medicine. He used medical vocabulary in his output in its basic function, that is in order to characterize the health of his characters, and in a secondary function. The secondary function involved using medical vocabulary (not only Polish) to describe various phenomena and situations. Among others, he used it to describe the emotional situations of characters; their behaviour and actions, social and political situation, as well as nature, space, objects, literature and art.

Opis:
Until now, Stanisław Żeromski’s writings have not been viewed with regard to literature common to the age of anxiety from the turn of the eighties and nineties of the 19th century, though there are numerous common aspects shared by both. These are clearly discernible in the early works of the writer, written in his youthful days, and shaped among others by J. Ochorowicz’s literary piece Z dziennika psychologa (“From a psychologist’s diary”) concerning the latter’s views on the neuropsychological system of man, the acquired habitual self-analysis and autobiographism rooted in the practical activities of a diarist; all of which surface both in the subject matter, the singularity of style, narration, as well as the composition of later works by the author. By devoting the majority of space and attention to identifying and tracing literary awareness in his intimate notes from 1882 to 1891 – of which one volume carries the title Dziennik człowieka nerwowego (“Diary of the anxious man”) – R. Okulicz-Kozaryn portrays its role in Siłaczka (“The Strongwoman”), Mogiła (“The Grave”) and Źródło (“The Source”), also in Ludzie bezdomni (“The Homeless”). He further claims that Żeromski’s Dzienniki (“Diaries”) should be presented as its laboratory sample, whereas the entire literary output of the writer ought to be interpreted as more advanced consequences of the then initiated experiment.

Opis:
The author of the article has recalled Stefan Żeromski’s comedy, its premiere at Juliusz Osterwa and Mieczysław Limanowski’s Reduta and, above all, the discussion which began in the Warsaw press in 1925 and has been continued to this day. The author has identified and discussed some basic threads: the genology of the work, and its theatricality and ideology. Almost all critics of the interwar period got involved in the beginnings of the discussion, regardless of their experience and political orientation. Readers and theatre critics (incidentally, the play Uciekła mi przepióreczka came in literary and theatrical circulation almost at the same time) perceived a call for a new patriotism in the work, which Przełęcki was supposed to spread in the liberated Homeland. The formal shape of the work, too, contributed to calling it a masterpiece, while the quick death of the author transformed the comedy almost in a literary testament.

Opis:
Stefan Żeromski’s novel, The Story of a Sin (1908), was controversial and considered scandalous at the beginning of the twentieth century. Żeromski was accused of undermining the significance of the family as the basic unit of society. His book, it was said, promoted “free love,” by disparaging Polish women and vividly portraying the moral degradation of the heroine. Theatrical and film adaptations of the novel met with similar charges (Leon Schiller, Polish Theatrical adaptation, Warsaw, 1926). The first film adaptation appeared in 1911, followed by an Italian version in 1917 (La Storia di unpeccato). In 1933, Sfinks, the most honored Polish film studio, produced yet another adaptation for the studio’s 25th anniversary. Such issues as divorce, abortion, single motherhood, and prostitution (topical issues in society and major themes in the book) took a back seat to the film’s criminal motif.
