Opis:
Micromorphology has become an important tool in investigations of glacial tills. Structure and texture of tills studied in thin sections can be used to decipher the origin of tills, in particular their depositional and deformational history, but also to shed light on the nature of subglacial erosion, transport and deposition processes in general. In combination with laboratory experiments on till shearing under controlled conditions, micromorphology yields useful, quantitative data on till rheology that helps understanding the processes of ice movement over soft, deformable beds. This paper is a review of micromorphology applications to the study of subglacial tills as reported in the leading modern literature and presentation of a case study from Obórki site in north-central Poland that illustrates the potential of this method in the context of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet.

Opis:
Schrodinger operators with nonlocal δ-interaction are studied with the use of the Lax-Phillips scattering theory methods. The condition of applicability of the Lax-Phillips approach in terms of non-cyclic functions is established. Two formulas for the S-matrix are obtained. The first one deals with the Krein-Naimark resolvent formula and the Weyl-Titchmarsh function, whereas the second one is based on modified reflection and transmission coefficients. The S-matrix S(z) is analytical in the lower half-plane $\mathbb{C}$_ when the Schrodinger operator with nonlocal δ-interaction is positive self-adjoint. Otherwise, S(z) is a meromorphic matrix-valued function in $\mathbb{C}$_ and its properties are closely related to the properties of the corresponding Schrodinger operator. Examples of S-matrices are given.

Mathematics and physics are based on two numbers: Archimedes’ constant = 3,14… and e = 2,71… – Napier’s constant. The former reflects the ratio of the perimeter of a figure to its diameter and maximizes the area, given the diameter. The solutions are the disk and the circle. The latter represents the accumulated capital paid by a bank after one year from investing one unit of money at an annual interest rate of 100% under continuous compounding. The ratio of the disk’s perimeter to its diameter, i.e. , governs omnipresent cyclical motion, whereas Napier’s constant determines natural growth – exponential growth. Nature mixes both kinds of behaviour: there is equilibrium – vortices, and the cobweb model, dynamic growth. Our general remarks are corroborated by the theory of linear differential equations with constant coefficients. Social life – democracy and quality – despite the deceptive chaos of accidental behaviour, is also governed by a beautiful numeral law. This social number is λ = ⅔ whose notation is derived from the Greek meaning crowd, people, assembly. The social number, Łyko’s number, is defined by the fundamental theorem. If each alternative of a maximal relation of a given profile has its frequency in this profile greater than ⅔, then such relation is a group preference. This sufficient condition separates a decisional chaos from a stable economic and voting order – the preference. Also our everyday language makes use of . We distinguish with it upper states – elitist ones, from ordinary standards. The ⅔ rule implies that in each group one third of the population prevails, while the rest are just background actors. The number also appears, a bit of a surprise, in classical theorems of geometry.

Opis:
Well-being is a quality, and each quality has three natural states: a little, moderately, a lot. Well-being resembles happiness and health. When we have well-being, we usually are not aware of it. Certainly, we all want to live a life of well-being. While we do not specify the notion of happiness so as to avoid bad luck and not to show off with it, we do not define well-being either. It is a blessed state of existing together with nature and with people. Permanent well-being is equated with stable well-being. It is achievable only in a traditional society, where everyone knows what to do and gets it done as expected. Well-being also is associated with social Darwinism; population has well-being when it grows exponentially. Malthusian equation y py ′ = can be seen as a precise definition of well-being. Well-being is a holistic term that applies to a whole community as the quality of life, often equivalent to standard of living. There is no well-being on a desert island. Well-being implies work productiveness and indicates that economy is more efficient than social needs. Well-being may also be expressed by utility functions. Population’s average utility defines social well-being. Each utility function is linked to preference. If a population’s profile satisfies the ⅔ rule, then a maximal relation is preference; in fact, the very preference is social well-being. Stability of wellbeing in Markov matrix 2 1 3 3 1 1 1 3 3 3 1 2 3 3 0 0 M = i s represented by transitions from the states: low being, being and good being, respectively, to these states. If the probabilities of transitions are as those in the matrix M, then the population is divided into three equal parts at a limit state. There are always poor people, normal or happy people and rich people. Well-being may also stand for a state of the economy – a basket of goods at which the utility function takes the maximum. Well-being is definitely related to work organization and economic situation. The world today enjoys well-being, because the net global wealth has doubled since 2000, reaching $263 trillion in 2013. The assets therefore increased exponentially. Yet, one should consider the lilies of the field, and how they grow, look at the birds of the air and think about who feeds them. The idea of wellbeing is more spiritual than material. It is in vain that you go late to rest and get up early – your effort will not gain much. Because God gives sleep to those he loves. Life is the only value affirmed by Nietzsche. Being represents a complete good, whereas not being is evil. If you exist, you have well-being. There is no well-being without equilibrium and full employment. Well-being can be measured by an index W n k n = + where n denotes the number of new firms established in a given year, and k – the number of closed firms. The nearer to one is this index, the better. Well-being is by no means total power, fortune and pleasure. Well-being is a state of soul, not a state of body. It is a function of organization and self-organization, a variety of stoicism.

Recently we have shown that in vitro binding of the proximal part of the human tyrosine hydroxylase gene to the nuclear matrix is correlated with its transcriptional activity. The strongest binding potential was predicted by computing for the first intron sequence (Lenartowski & Goc, 2002, Neurosci Lett.; 330 : 151-154). In this study a 16 kb fragment of the bovine genomic DNA containing the tyrosine hydroxylase gene was investigated for its affinity to the nuclear matrix. Only a 950 bp fragment encoding the distal part of the first intron, second exon and a few nucleotides of the second intron bound to the nuclear matrix. The binding was independent of the tissue-specific tyrosine hydroxylase gene activation. The fragment was subcloned and sequenced. Computer search pointed to one potential intronic matrix attachment region with two AP1-like sites embedded in the sequence. We conclude that even if the position of the matrix binding region is conserved among the tyrosine hydroxylase genes in mammals, its tissue specificity and/or function is not preserved or is achieved by different mechanisms.

Opis:
Abdominal aortic aneurysms and abdominal hernias become an important health problems of our times. Abdominal aortic aneurysm and its rupture is one of the most dangerous fact in vascular surgery. There are some theories pointing to a multifactoral genesis of these kinds of diseases, all of them assume the attenuation of abdominal fascia and abdominal aortic wall. The density and continuity of these structures depend on collagen and elastic fibers structure. Reducing the strengthof the fibersmaybedue to changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM) by the proteolytic enzymes-matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade extracellular matrix proteins. These enzymes play an important role in the development of many disease: malignant tumors (colon, breast, lung, pancreas), cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, ischemia-reperfusion injury), connective tissue diseases (Ehler-Danlos Syndrome, Marfan’s Syndrome), complications of diabetes (retinopathy, nephropathy). One of the most important is matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2). The aim of the study was an estimation of the MMP-2 blood levels in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia, and in patients with only abdominal aortic aneurysm. Material and methods. The study involved 88 patients aged 42 to 89 years, including 75 men and 13 women. Patients were divided into two groups: patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia (45 persons, representing 51.1% of all group) and patients with only abdominal aortic aneurysm (43 persons, representing 48,9% of all group). Results. It was a statistically significant increase in MMP-2 blood levels in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia compared to patients with only abdominal aortic aneurysm. It was a statistically significant increase in the prevalence of POCHP in patients with only abdominal aortic aneurysm compared to patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia. Conclusions. Statistically significant higher MMP-2 blood levels in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia seems shows that this enzyme plays a role in the pathogenesis of primary abdominal hernias. The observed distribution of MMP-2 blood levels in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and primary abdominal hernia may raise the conclusion that this enzyme determines the presence of multi-organ failure of the connective tissue - the patients with only abdominal aortic aneurysm had significantly lower MMP-2 blood levels.

In order to minimize the receiver complexity and improve the performance of the spectral amplitude coding - optical code division multiple access system, a novel one-dimensional zero cross-correlation code using Pascal’s triangle matrix has been suggested. This research article shows that the position of chip “1” in the code sequences is one of the important factors affecting system performance. In fact, mathematical results show that, for the allwavelength direct detection, it is possible to reduce the number of filters without sacrificing system performance. In addition, compared to one-wavelength direct detection, the signalto-noise ratio value is increased with an increasing weight by using wide-bandwidth filters as decoders. Performance of the proposed system in terms of the minimum bit error rate is validated using the OptiSystem software. Compared with the previous systems at 622 Mbps, the suggested system gave the best values of bit error rate of around 10⁻⁴³, 10⁻³⁵, and 10⁻²⁶ for higher, medium, and lower service demand, respectively.

The analysis of the acoustical systems can be carried out based on a number of different formalisms, of which applied frequently are the transfer matrix formalism, in which the chosen state variables are the sound pressure p and the sound velocity v, and the scattering matrix formalism adopting the sound pressures p+ and p and the sound velocities v+ and v of waves propagating through an element in both directions. Even though, they are mathematically equivalent, i.e. there exists the unequivocal transformation from one to another there are some advantages and disadvantages in applying one or the other to analyse mufflers or other acoustic system, especially when the propagation of a multimode wave is assumed and numerical calculations are indispensable. In the paper the transformation between the formalisms has been derived and applied to analyse the phenomena at a junction between the tail pipe and the chamber and also in mufflers composed of one or two chambers. The more flexible for numerical calculations seems the scattering matrix formalism, especially when the number of propagating modes differs on both sides of a junction. On the other hand the transmission matrix formalism is suitable for analysing systems constituting a cascade. The sources of the advantages and disadvantages of both formalisms are explained. The results obtained can be helpful in the effective design of silencers with specific properties.

Purpose: To receive the answers to the following research problems: (1) How is the interest of researchers in whistleblowing in health care organizations developing? (2) How do researchers define whistleblowing in health care? (3) What are the main problems (limitations) of whistleblowing in health care organizations? (4) What factors affect whistleblowing in health care organizations? Design/methodology/approach: The method of systematic literature review based on the PRISMA model was used. To identify the factors affecting whistleblowing, McKinsey’s 7S framework was used. Findings: The researchers from the UK definitely dominate, and the papers from Central European countries seem to be invisible. The vast majority of works came from the 2010s. Whistleblowing serves the good and safety of the patient; however, there are staff concerns about the consequences they may face. ‘Style’, ‘staff’ and ‘shared values’ seem to be the most crucial for whistleblowing, and these are factors considered ‘soft’. Research limitations: The access to databases managed by the home University. In future studies, there is a need to take into account other databases, including additional sources of knowledge, like books and grey literature. Originality/implications: Identifying the state and place of research worldwide on whistleblowing in health care, and a proposal of the whistleblowing verification matrix. New definitions of whistleblowing and whistleblowers were proposed. The above may be considered theoretical contribution to science.
Oryginalność/implikacje: zidentyfikowanie stanu i miejsca światowych badań na temat whistleblowingu w opiece zdrowotnej i zaproponowanie macierzy do weryfikacji wdrożenia whistleblowingu. Propozycja nowej definicji whistleblowingu i whistleblowera. Powyższe może być uznane jako wkład do nauki.
