    The plot of Rymkiewicz’s Reytan. Upadek Polski (Warsaw 2012) about the close of the 18th century in Poland is full of digressions on our times. This tale-essay written by a learned philologist and poet is about history which is being revived here and now. Tadeusz Reytan’s mosaic biography is presented by a detective narration which is not free from doubts deliberately raised by the author, who revives various documents and iconographic materials, above all Matejko’s painting-allegory Upadek Polski. Their significances have an effect on our history; they are the source of our anxieties which we fail to dispose of. The author-polymath has acquired in the internal world of this plot the status of the major element. He is prone to putting forward hypotheses and spins a fragmentary, unformed and open tale. He reveals his own thinking about the past and its echoes in the present. Our today and the 18th century yesterday create a marriage that is impossible to separate. They worry us and evoke the shape of tomorrow. ‘From St. Petersburg to Smolensk an icy wind is still blowing’.

    The sketch shows relations of the late poetry of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz with a music and the topic of death. Poet articulates a belief that transverbal property of music deepens and extends the ability of poetry to express the thanatological matters. Rymkiewicz describes life as a constant tending to death. This tending is shown in his poems as a danse moriendi, dance in a rhythm of waltz or ländler. Through the music it connects with the cosmic rhythm of nature, the wheel of every existence. Rymkiewicz convinces also that lyrical poetry related with music can defy nothingness. Thanks to oniristic poetic creation poems-songs and poems-ariettes preserve, as in a fairy tale, the continuity of life.

    The article focuses on the memory practices activated in Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s Kinderszenen, an essay devoted to the Warsaw Uprising. The text refers to Klaus Theweleit’s Male Fantasies analyzing the language of male soldiers, and examines the work of the same linguistic logic which determines the way in which the events in the capital are presented. The Nazification of memory involves here the demonstration of obscenity of the uprising and recognizing it as constitutive to the national identity. The purpose of the text is to capture the relationship between shaping collective memory and creating “genogenic” imaginarium integrating the Polish community.

    This essay compares the poetic philosophies of Wallace Stevens and Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Stevens’s first Polish translator. In the first part, I trace a deep affinity in the way both poets engage with the Nietzschean-Dionysiac element in language. The Nietzschean dynamism creates a rich conceptual background against which it is possible to understand the process of poetic language merging with nothingness. Both Stevens’s and Rymkiewicz’s early poems are reactions to such conceptual environment: Stevens’s Harmonium and Rymkiewicz’s Co to jest drozd present a way of engaging with nothingness in which the absence of logos becomes a source of the poems’ figurative power. As they attain this power, the poems arrive at a form of self-consciousness. I trace this affinity through the deconstructive figure of catachresis, as it has been applied to Stevens by his deconstructive critic J. Hillis Miller. In the second part, I change the method. Here, I show how the later poetries of Stevens and Rymkiewicz can be approached by replacing Miller’s deconstructive catachresis, with Harold Bloom’s metalepsis. This Bloomian reading allows me to identify a vital difference between the later phases in the two poets. Discussing Stevens’s “Auroras of Autumn” next to Rymkiewicz’s Do widzenia Gawrony, I show how Rymkiewicz diverts sharply from his American Romantic/Modernist counterpart in the way his poetry reads Nietzsche’s trope of the eternal recurrence of the same. For Stevens, this concept is realized in the form of metalepsis, which, as Bloom shows, is a figure allowing the poem to retain its figurative capability while steering its course away from any notion of essence or necessity. In contrast, for Rymkiewicz, the eternal recurrence of the same paves way to an essentialist understanding, and affirmation, of human history as eternal cycle of creation-destruction, a cycle presided over by a mixture of pain, cruelty, and ecstasy. Consequently, I argue that while Stevens’s late poetry remains faithful to figurativeness as the poem’s self-reliance – that is, the poem’s refusal to join forces with any sort of concept or process conceived of as independent from the poem’s re-descriptive capability – Rymkiewicz’s late poems find their visionary power in precisely such joining of forces.

    The article describes how the historical essays of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz depend on the works of his important predecessors. This dependency is analysed in accordance with Harold Bloom’s “anxiety of influence” theory. I bring up well-known sources, such as the works of Maria Janion, less-remembered sources, such as the essays of Jerzy Łojek, as well as sources that may initially come as a surprise, such as the philosophy and biography of Michel Foucault. In interpreting these connections I develop Bloom’s psychoanalytical inspirations, but I also problematise them by juxtaposing them with the “schizoanalysis” proposed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in Anti-Oedipus.
    Artykuł opisuje zależność historycznych esejów Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza od twórczości znaczących dla pisarza poprzedników, analizowaną zgodnie z Harolda Blooma teorią „lęku przed wpływem”. Obok źródeł oczywistych, takich jak dzieła Marii Janion, wskazane są tu również te słabiej pamiętane, jak eseistyka Jerzego Łojka, a także zaskakujące zrazu, jak filozofia i biografia Michela Foucaulta. Interpretacja tych związków rozwija psychoanalityczne inspiracje Blooma, problematyzując je wszakże zestawieniem ze „schizoanalizą” zaproponowaną w Anty-Edypie Gillesa Deleuze’a i Félixa Guattariego.

    This article attempts to throw some light on what may be called Poland’s new national-identity literature and its leading fi gures, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz, Wojciech Wencel and Przemysław Dakowicz. They see their work as a psychopolitical educational tool in the service of a patriotic mission to reactivate the ‘real’ national identity. They believe that such an identity is necessary for individuals to develop strong personal identities, founded on a sense of belonging to an integral national community. Rymkiewicz, Wencel and Dakowicz champion this, somewhat archaic, model of national identity which claims total commitment from its members in virtually all their writings. This article focuses on the rhetorical devices used by the new national-identity literature to present and promote its key concept, especially the idea of a ‘sublime’ ethnic community, or a sentimentalized vision of a Polish Commonwealth.

    Pierwsza część artykułu poświęcona jest perspektywie zastosowania psychoanalitycznej kategorii perwersji – zrekonstruowanej głównie na podstawie pism Jacques’a Lacana i Gillesa Deleuze’a – do analizy patologii polskiej zbiorowej psychiki, jakie wytykają w swoich książkach Jan Sowa, Andrzej Leder i Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz. Naszym zdaniem kulturowy model Polaka to właśnie perwert, zależnie od pozycji klasowej – sadysta albo masochista, nie zaś psychotyk albo edypalny neurotyk. Kategoria perwersji pozwala wyjaśnić dwuznaczną relację polskości do państwa i prawa, która nie jest ani ich prostym odrzuceniem (jak psychoza), ani jednoznaczną afirmacją (jak nerwica). Struktura perwersji – rozpiętej zewnętrznie między nerwicą a psychozą, a wewnętrznie między masochizmem a sadyzmem – pozwala modelować dynamikę współczesnych polskich konfliktów ideologicznych i politycznych, w tym napięcie między akcentowaniem narodowej suwerenności a postkolonialnym odwoływaniem się do wzorów obcych. Części druga i trzecia to studia przypadków: zbiorowej psychiki bohaterów prozy eseistycznej Rymkiewicza oraz indywidualnej – Nagiego sadu Wiesława Myśliwskiego. Zestawienie to pozwala ukazać odmienność postrzegania tego samego fenomenu – sadyzmu – z wnętrza psychiki, która z pozycją perwersyjną afirmatywnie się identyfikuje (Rymkiewicz), oraz ze zdystansowanej perspektywy neurotyka (Myśliwski), zarazem jednak uchwycić izomorfizm struktur, które kryją się za tymi tak odmiennymi przedstawieniami.
    The first part of the article investigates perspective of perversion employed in the analysis of the Polish collective psychology in its pathologies identified in books of Jan Sowa, Andrzej Leder and Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz. The category of perversion itself is reconstructed chiefly after works of Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze. In our opinion, the cultural model of Pole is the pervert. Depending on the social class, he is a sadist or a masochist, as opposed to a psychotic or a classical Oedipal neurotic. The category of perversion allows for the explanation of an ambivalent relationship between the Polishness and the State; the relationship which is neither a simple rejection (such as a psychosis) nor an unequivocal affirmation (such as a neurosis).The second and the third part are case-studies: in a collective psychology of the heroes of Rymkiewicz’s essays and in an individual psychology of the heroes of The Nude Orchard (pol. Nagi sad) by Wiesław Myśliwski. This juxtaposition shows the difference in perception of the same phenomenon, i.e. sadism – the difference between the point of view from within the mind affirmatively indentifying with the perverse attitude (Rymkiewicz) and the distanced point of view of a neurotic (Myśliwski). It also allows for grasping the isomorphism of structures behind these twoperceptions.

    The article concerns texts which problematize such figures of criminological discourse as crime, perpetrator, victim, interrogator, or the penitentiary system. The works of A. Kuśniewicz, W.L. Terlecki and J.M. Rymkiewicz perform multidimensional revisions: they question traditional thinking about historical truth and the means of reaching it; they trespass the border between literature and fiction; they resist criminological discourse.     This essay combining literary history and translation criticism focuses on “Poetry,” the programmatic poem by outstanding American modernist poet Marianne Moore. It draws the reader’s attention to the most important interpretative issues in the work, including the poet’s attempt to enunciate the basically “inexpressible” essence of poetry and phenomenon of its functioning. The mystery of poetry and of Moore’s poem are illustrated through a critical analysis of Polish translations by the following translators: Jarosław Mark Rymkiewicz, Jan Prokop, Julia Hartwig, Stanisław Barańczak, and Ludmiła Marjańska, which are provided in an appendix together with the original.

A. Zajączkowskiego. Jako kierownik Katedry turkologicznej w Instytucie Orientalistycznym Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, A. Zajączkowski uruchomił swoje seminarium jesienią 1933 r. Jego pierwszymi słuchaczami byli: Jan Reychman, Józef Szulimowicz, Armand Stefański i Stanisław Szachno-Romanowicz. Reychman ukończył studia historyczne, Szachno-Romanowicz był asyriologiem i archiwistą, a Szulimowicz – Karaimem z Halicza. Profesor Zajączkowski współpracował ściśle z profesorem Tadeuszem Kowalskim z Krakowa i historykami z Warszawy. Prof. Wacław Tokarz skierował na seminarium turkologiczne dwóch swoich studentów (Reychmana i Stefańskiego). W roku akademickim 1934/1935 temat seminarium brzmiał: „Z dziejów kultury i literatury tureckiej XVI-XVIII w.”. Słuchaczami byli: Stanisława Płaskowicka, Halina Kröber i Bohdan Baranowski. W roku 1935/6, na seminarium uczęszczali: J. Szulimowicz, A. Stefański, H. Kröber, S. Płaskowicka, I. Krudowska, A. Murza Murzicz i S. Kryczyński. Prof. Zajaczkowski prowadził wówczas 4 wykłady poświęcone językom i kulturze ludów tureckich, językowi tureckiemu, składni języka arabskiego oraz Gulistanowi Sadiego, a także ćwiczenia seminaryjne z filologii tureckiej, na które uczęszczali jego studenci. Prof. Zajączkowski zabrał ich na wycieczkę do Stambułu (we wrześniu 1934), później S. Płaskowicka przebywała tam na stypendium (1935). Prof. Zajączkowski był również wykładowcą w Wyższej Szkole Wschodoznawczej przy Instytucie Wschodnim w Warszawie, gdzie studiowało również kilku jego seminarzystów. Uczniowie profesora, J. Reychman i S. Płaskowicka, zostali później długoletnimi pracownikami Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego.
    Documents from the Archives of the University of Warsaw, stories by Irena Krudowska, Stanisława Płaskowicka and materials left by Stanisław Kryczyński shed some light on the first years of A. Zajączkowski’s seminar. As the head of the Turkology Department at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw, A. Zajączkowski launched his seminar in the autumn of 1933. His first students were Jan Reychman, Józef Szulimowicz, Armand Stefański and Stanisław Szachno-Romanowicz. Reychman was a graduate of history studies, Szachno-Romanowicz was an assyriologist and archivist, and Szulimowicz was a Karaite from Halicz. Professor Zajączkowski worked closely with Professor Tadeusz Kowalski from Cracow and historians from Warsaw. Prof. Wacław Tokarz sent 2 of his students to the Turkology seminar (Reychman, Stefański). In 1934/5, the topic of the seminar was: “Topics on Turkish Culture and Literature in the 16–17th cc.” The students were Stanisława Płaskowicka, Halina Koeber and Bohdan Baranowski. In 1935/6, the seminar was attended by J. Szulimowicz, A. Stefański, H. Koeber, S. Płaskowicka, I. Krudowska, A. Murza Murzicz and S. Kryczyński. Back then, Prof. Zajączkowski presented 4 lectures on: the language and culture of the Turkish peoples, the Arabic language, the prose work “Gulistan” as well as classes in Turkish philology, which was attended by his students. Prof. Zajączkowski took his students on a trip to Istanbul (September 1934), and later S. Płaskowicka went there on a scholarship (1935). Prof. Zajączkowski was also a lecturer at the School of Eastern Studies at the Eastern Institute in Warsaw. Some of his students studied there. His students J. Reychman and S. Płaskowicka became long-serving academics at the University of Warsaw.
