The article focuses on the state of academic literature in the field of Russian translation studies based on Ewa Konefał’s latest bibliographic monograph entitled Russian translation studies. Volume 1: Abstracts of dissertations 1937–2015 (Publishing house of Gdansk University, Gdansk 2016). The first part of the article justifies the need to create bibliographic monographs, and briefly presents Polish bibliographic research in Russian studies, with 169 publications from the years 1883–2016. In the main part of the article, the author discusses Konefał’s work and presents statistical data of documents from the field of Russian translation studies available in libraries in Russia and Post-Soviet countries based on Konefał’s research results. The total number of the excerpted titles of dissertations (PhD and postdoctoral) in the years 1937–2015 is 2202, with 87.5% belonging to the field of philology (1927 positions).

The paper provides a study of religious lexis excerpted from the Russian translation of the encyclical letter Laudato si’. The Russian version of the encyclical was translated and published by Russian Franciscan Publishing House. The analyzed material consisting of single words, as well as compound multi-word expressions, related to the Catholic denomination (264 lexical items – 1000 uses, which accounts for 14% of the entire encyclical), was grouped into semantic fields. The vocabulary was described in terms of the semantics and its functioning and codification, both in the contemporary Russian religious language and in general Russian language. It was assumed that the encyclical is addressed not only to the representatives of the Church hierarchy but also to all the faithful. Hence, there was the need to draw attention to the pragmatic aspects of the religious language, including the balance between comprehensibility and the use of specialist theological terminology in the translated text. It was demonstrated that the majority of the lexical items of religious terminology is coded by the explanatory dictionary of the contemporary Russian language, except for 14 lexical items related to the Catholic denomination that enhance the lexis of the contemporary Russian language.

The article addresses the issue of translator’s notes in a Russian translation of Olga Tokarczuk’s “Bieguni” novel by Irina Adelʹgejm. The main text of the original, despite its abundance in borrowings, interjections and quotations in languages other than Polish, was not provided with explanatory notes by the author. The translator, however, provided the translation with 149 notes. They are notesexplaining terms, proper names, names of realities and others translated in the main text as well as notes explaining fragments formulated in the novel’s text in languages other than the language of the narration. On the basis of the undertaken analysis it is stated that the strategy of forming paratexts adopted by the translator is inconsistent. The secondary text designates an additional way of reading “Bieguni” novel, but it does not impose it as using the notes is just a possibility and depends on the reader’s choice.

W niniejszym artykule autor proponuje semantyczną analizę konfrontatywną polskiego leksemu przeczytać oraz jego rosyjskich odpowiedników – прочитать i перечитать, a także zestawienie takiej analizy z odpowiednimi artykułami hasłowymi w wielkich słownikach polsko-rosyjskich i rosyjsko-polskich. Celem analizy jest określenie optymalnej sekwencji znaczeń leksemu przeczytać, odpowiedni dobór ekwiwalentów, a także systemowo adekwatna i pragmatycznie użyteczna konstrukcja artykułów hasłowych dla wszystkich trzech jednostek leksykalnych.
The article is devoted to a contrastive analysis of lexical (dictionary) meanings of the Polish lexeme przeczytać and its Russian equivalents прочитать and перечитать. The analysis also provides verification of its findings with the register of three major Polish-Russian dictionaries. The purpose of the analysis is to establish a correct sequence of meanings of the Polish lexeme along with appropriate translation counterparts, and to suggest how to create a system-readable and pragmatically useful structure of dictionary entries for all three lexemes.

By focusing on Sasha Dvanov – the main character in the Chevengur novel by Andrei Platonov – the author points to possible interpretations and connotations of his name, patronym and surname. Thereby, she proves that the writer was choosing meaningful names and surnames for his characters, thus trying to underline their function, their role in the storyline or emboss their destiny. And even though the translation of the character’s surname into Polish was not very difficult for the translators, due to the proximity of the languages and lexical convergence, the wide association context of the surname may be difficult to understand for a statistical reader.

The aim of the article is to analyse the Polish translation of S. Marshak’s poem for children Веселая азбука про все на свете. The source text is rhymed and reveals the author’s travel through consecutive letters of the Russian alphabet. This already puts the translator in a difficult position since the Polish alphabet differs from the Russian one. The greatest problem, however, turns out to be not the disruption of the order of the alphabet, but failure to adhere to the artistic shape of the work. The translation is de-rhythmical, often unrhymed, and its literal translation results in making the poem nonsensical in some stanzas without sticking to the rhyme.
Artykuł został poświęcony analizie tłumaczenia wiersza dla dzieci S. Marszaka „Веселая азбука про все на свете” na język polski. Tekst wyjściowy jest wierszowaną wędrówką autora przez kolejne litery alfabetu rosyjskiego. To już a priori stawia tłumacza w kłopotliwej sytuacji, bowiem alfabet polski jest inny. Największym problemem okazało się jednak nie zburzenie układu alfabetu, ale niepodtrzymanie formy artystycznej utworu. Przekład jest zderytmizowany, często nierymowany, a dosłowność przekazu powoduje, że zaproponowany czytelnikowi utwór – bez podtrzymania rymu – w niektórych strofach staje się bezsensowny.

Dorota Masłowska’s Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną employs various types of linguistic innovations. One of them is a mistaken selection of the number of nouns. This stylistic means results in linguistic humour. In the Russian translation of the novel reflecting this phenomenon should not pose any problems. However, neither of the instances of the stylistic means analysed in the paper was reflected in the Russian target text. It is difficult to determine why the translator did not attempt to show Russian readers a reconstruction of the language of the Polish text. As a result, Irina Lappo’s translation lacks the poetic qualities and refreshing touches of Masłowska’s language.

Современный научный дискурс при всей строгости и терминологичности научного изложения допускает и некоторую метафоричность в тех случаях, когда образ способствует более полному пониманию сущности предмета мысли. Оглядывая многовековую историю размышлений о переводе писателей, философов, литературных критиков, нельзя не заметить явного лавирования научной мысли, подталкиваемой желанием либо найти идеальные способы совершенного перевода, либо оправдать его онтологическое несовершенство, крутых разворотов от одних крайностей к другим. Становление науки о переводе в России наглядно иллюстрирует этот тезис.
Współczesny dyskurs naukowy, przy całej ścisłości i precyzji terminologicznej prezentacji naukowej, dopuszcza również pewną metaforyczność w tych przypadkach, w których obraz przyczynia się do pełniejszego zrozumienia istoty przedmiotu myśli. Patrząc na wielowiekową historię myślenia o przekładzie pisarzy, filozofów, krytyków literackich, nie sposób nie zauważyć oczywistego manewru myśli naukowej, która pchana pragnieniem albo znalezienia idealnych sposobów doskonałego przekładu, albo usprawiedliwienia jego ontologicznej niedoskonałości, stromo skręca z jednej skrajności w drugą. Kształtowanie się nauki o przekładzie w Rosji jest żywą ilustracją tej tezy.
Russian translation studies emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. Its formation and evolution led to social transformations and the development of scientific thought in such areas as linguistics, philosophy, psychology, communication theory, etc. Various translation models and scientific paradigms replacing each other throughout the development of Russian translation studies reflect its interdisciplinary status. The plurality of approaches to understanding translation leads to the need to build a systemological model based on the synthesis of a set of data, perceived as something whole. This approach makes it possible to identify various types of links within such a complex object as a translation.

Musical Lexis in Russian-Polish Lexicography: Present State and Users’ NeedsIn order to meet the expectations of receivers, who come across vocabulary from various areas in their everyday life, general bilingual dictionaries include lexis from many different fields. This article analyses one such group in Russian-Polish lexicography: musical lexis. The analysis offered here considers translation pairs extracted from two most comprehensive Russian-Polish dictionaries. The study categorises musical lexis into semantic classes and verifies the accuracy, semantic relevance and currency of provided equivalents. The aim was to establish whether general bilingual lexicography meets the needs of users looking for equivalents in this lexical area. Basing on selected material, the article also compares the structure of entries in each dictionary and considers cultural background of musical lexis in the context of Russian culture. To illustrate the issues in focus, the study comments on a number of examples and proposes some solutions to problematic cases.Leksyka muzyczna w rosyjsko-polskiej leksykografii. Stan obecny versus potrzeby użytkownikówDwujęzyczne słowniki ogólne obejmują leksykę z wielu dziedzin, wychodząc naprzeciw oczekiwaniom odbiorców, którzy w życiu codziennym stykają się ze zróżnicowanym tematycznie słownictwem. Jedną z takich dziedzin jest muzyka. Związana z nią leksyka zarejestrowana w rosyjsko-polskiej leksykografii jest obiektem naszych badań. Analiza opiera się na parach przekładowych wyekscerpowanych z dwóch najobszerniejszych słowników rosyjsko-polskich. W pracy dokonano podziału leksyki muzycznej na klasy semantyczne. Poddano weryfikacji trafność ekwiwalentów przekładowych, ich zgodność semantyczną oraz stopień aktualności terminów, zawarty w słownikach. Działania te miały na celu sprawdzenie, na ile dwujęzyczna leksykografia ogólna odpowiada potrzebom użytkowników w zakresie dostępności odpowiedników dla tego typu leksyki. Bazując na wybranym materiale, dokonano porównania budowy artykułu hasłowego w obu słownikach. Zwrócono uwagę na podłoże kulturowe leksyki muzycznej w kontekście kultury rosyjskiej. Ilustracją dla omawianych treści są liczne przykłady wraz z komentarzami oraz, niekiedy, propozycje rozwiązań kwestii problemowych.
