    Trace fossil Ophiomorpha rudis occurs in building coarse-grained sandstones of the Lower Istebna Beds in architecture elements of Kraków. This trace fossil is produced by shrimps, which constructed their burrows deeply in the sediment. Their burrows are mostly vertical, up to 2 m deep and 5-20 mm in diameter, having horizontal branches and walls enriched in clay minerals.

    The article is devoted to the assessment of the “Russian” aspect in Czech history and culture based on the prose of Jaroslav Rudiš. Jaroslav Rudiš, one of the most prominent contemporary Czech writers, was born in Turnov (1972). Since the publishing of “The Sky under Berlin” (2002), his work has positively attracted the attention of critics and has won a wider community of readers, which is evidenced by several reprints of his books and a considerable interest in the new one. Jaroslav Rudiš distinguishes himself from the other modern Czech authors by the ability to soberly, aptly and relevantly describe the problems of contemporaries. His characters are people who personally experienced the “whiff ” of the history and felt changes in Czech society over the second half of the 20th century. Despite the fact that Rudiš does not write explicitly about Russia, does not talk about the eternal themes of Russian philosophy and culture and does not discuss positive or negative aspects of Russian influence on international politics, he shows the impact of the “Russian” aspect on the course of the newest Czech history quite accurately and ironically, although infrequently. Russia and the “Russian” in the prose of the author are mentioned in connection with the events in the lives of individual heroes who perceive the Russian aspect as given and periodically interacting with their lives depending on the circumstances. The views of his characters are ambiguous: they are not strictly negative with regard to important events, but they are not thoughtlessly positive, when the breathtaking spirit and depriving rational thinking of the wonderful creative ability of the Russian soul are praised. The tonality of Rudiš’s prose is comparable to Dovlatov’s irony of the “Reserve” or to the poetry of the Yerofeyev’s “Moscow − Petushki”. The study of Rudish’s prose was carried out by the method of excerpt from the available Czech texts of the writer. Axiological characteristics (more than 120 citations from 7 works of the author) relevant for representing the image of the “Russian” in Czech literature were analyzed from the point of view of imagological criteria.

    The article offers a new perspective on the phenomenon of code-switching by looking at it from the point ofview of translation studies. In doing so, the article addresses the general issue of untranslatability as well. Boththeoretical topics are discussed using the example of the German translation of the Czech novel Konec punkuv Helsinkách written by Jaroslav Rudiš. The aim of the article is to identify the different compensation strategiesused to translate the untranslatable, i.e., the Czech-German and Czech-English code-switching in the novel.

    In the theoretical part, we present a historical tradition of the so-called montage effect as a relation between a text and a picture, which relates to the discipline known as linguistics of an image. In the material part, we analyze the intermedial narration technique on the example of a Polish translation of a quasi-novel (a debut novel) by Jaroslav Rudis Niebo pod Berlinem which is examined in the light of Walter Benjamin’s theory of culture.

    Artykuł podejmuje problematykę rozpamiętywania przeszłości pogranicza czesko-niemieckiego („Kraju Sudeckiego”) w najnowszej literaturze czeskiej: w powieściach Jaroslava Rudiša Grandhotel (2006), Radki Denemarkovej Pieniądze od Hitlera (2006) oraz Josefa Urbana Młyn Habermanna (2001). Pisarze, przy pomocy m.in. mitologizacji, fabuły i narracji zainspirowanej wydarzeniami rzeczywistymi, dążą do przywrócenia „polifonii pamięci” tej przestrzeni. W literaturze na temat „Kraju Sudeckiego” temporalność, trwanie i pamięć, znaczą-co formujące tę przestrzeń, łączą się więc z przestrzennością, tworząc niepodzielną całość.
    The article deals with the problem of brooding over the history of the Sudetenland in the new Czech literature: novels Grandhotel (2006) by Jaroslav Rudiš, Peníze pro Hitlera (Money for Hitler, 2006) by Radka Denemarková and Habermannův mlýn (Habermann´s mill, 2001) by Josef Urban. Writ-ers, by using inter alia mythologization, fictionalization and narration inspired by real history, are trying to restore the “polyphony of a memory” of the space. In literature on Sudetenland, temporality, continuity and memory significantly form that space, so that they are joined with the spaciality in one, indivisible unity.

    Neben vielen anderen Charakterisierungen, etwa ‚Jahrhundert der Diktatoren‘, ist für das 20. Jahrhundert wahrscheinlich auch die Formulierung ‚Jahrhundert der Angst‘ gerechtfertigt. Dieser Beitrag ist ein erster Versuch, die Darstellung von Angst in verbal-piktoralen Narrativen zu erschließen. Text- und Bildspuren zu Angst – politisch genutzte Techniken der Angsterzeugung einerseits und bis zu dauerhafter Traumatisierung gehende Angsterfahrung andererseits – sind in vielen Graphic Novels zur Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts ein wesentliches Deutungsangebot. Obwohl ästhetisch und intellektuell anspruchsvoll, somit ein Angebot zur Aufarbeitung von Geschichte, ist diese Fokussierung von Angst der Forschung bislang entgangen. Diese Untersuchung betrifft erlebte und erlittene Geschichte vom Ersten Weltkrieg bis zur Wendezeit um 1989. In einer Auswahl von fünf Graphic Novels deutscher, französischer, polnischer und tschechischer Experten des Genres, bieten gerade die Bildspuren atmosphärische Dichte, Genauigkeit und zugleich Offenheit für weitere Interpretation.
    Dla XX wieku, obok wielu innych określeń, jak np. ‘stulecie dyktatorów’, można uznać za właściwe sformułowanie ‘stulecie strachu’. Niniejszy artykuł jest pierwszą próbą opisu tematyki strachu w narracjach tekstowo-graficznych. Ślady tekstowe i graficzne dotyczące strachu – począwszy od politycznie wykorzystywanych technik wytwarzania strachu, a kończąc na doświadczeniu strachu prowadzącym do trwałej traumatyzacji – stanowią jedną z głownych treści znaczeniowych w powieściach graficznych na temat historii XX wieku. Będąc estetycznie i intelektualnie wymagającym zagadnieniem – jako oferta do przerabiania historii – temat strachu nie był do tej pory przedmiotem badań naukowych. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy przeżywanej i doznawanej historii od I wojny światowej do przełomowego roku 1989. W dokonanym wyborze pięciu noweli graficznych autorstwa niemieckich, francuskich, polskich i czeskich twórców ślady graficzne oferują atmosferyczną zwartość, dokładność i pole do dalszych interpretacji.
    Next to many other characterizations, e.g. ‘century of dictators’, the wording ‘century of anxiety’ is probably likewise justified for the Twentieth century. This contribution is a first attempt at inquiring into the presentation of anxiety in verbal-pictorial narratives. Verbal and pictorial traces of anxiety (fear) – i.e. techniques of causing anxiety (fear) for political ends on the one hand and experience of anxiety (fear) on the other hand – are a substantial meaning making offer in many graphic novels on the history of the 20thcentury. Though esthetically and intellectually demanding, hence an offer of reappraisal of the past, so far, the topic of anxiety (fear) has escaped the attention of research projects. This study concerns history experienced and endured from World War One to the time of change around 1989. In a choice of five graphic novels by German, French, Polish and Czech experts of the genre, especially pictorial traces of Angst offer atmospheric density, precision and, at the same time, openness for further interpretation.
