Opis:
The paper presents the results of research conducted among Russian Roma children. Two groups of children, 6-8 years and 8-10 years old, were tested with a Romani Language Assessment Test. The study was conducted in a Roma settlement of a small town not far from Moscow. The children were tested on different grammatical categories in Romani as their home language. The grammatical knowledge of the children about their home language is not considered to be used by the Russian teachers in classroom. The frame of Cummins (2015) “teaching through an intercultural lens” is taken as the starting point of the research. The research results showed that the Roma children at the age between 6-8 years know the most complex grammatical categories of Romani as their mother tongue, however children’s knowledge is not used by the teachers at school environment teaching Russian. There are no lessons in Romani as the mother tongue strengthening the children’s linguistic and cognitive abilities.

Opis:
This study discusses issues related to the education of Romani children and their development in contemporary schools. The focus is on the options for developing Romani children’s creativity and skills. The author provides a theoretical analysis of the uniqueness of Romani children; in particular, she analyzes their specific psychological functioning. The author describes a creativity development program which has been designed for Romani pupils to foster their uniqueness. This program has been experimentally verified. The study focuses on the theoretical basis, objectives, methodology and results of an experiment which was aimed to test the effectiveness of the creativity development program in educating Romani children. Changes in Romani children’s creativity are subjected to quantitative and qualitative analysis. The interpretation of research results and findings provides innovative solutions for teaching Romani childre.

In 2013, the European Court of Human Rights decided the case of Horváth and Kiss v. Hungary in favor of the two Romani boys who alleged that they had been misdiagnosed as ‘mildly mentally retarded’ and consequently placed and retained in a special school for their whole primary education. This, they claimed, deprived them of the educational opportunity to pursue their chosen vocational interests. In this research note, I will provide a brief view of the history of special education in Hungary, and the history of mental retardation in its medical/pedagogic connections. I will suggest that the Court’s decision, while a positive development, fails to address the fundamental systemic racism of the entire medico/educational system in Hungary, and that until that more radical change is undertaken, a disproportionate number of Romani children will continue to be officially and unofficially treated as mentally deficient.

There are a wide range of minority languages in Poland – including such languages as Karaite, Lemko and Romani. Polish and international linguists have been studying such minority lan- guages and their relationship with Polish recently, but a lot remains to be done. Such languages are extremely valuable and they must be regarded by the Polonistic linguists as of importance. The article discusses in particular the case of the Romani language. The specifics of the relationship between Polish and Romani languages are discussed in comparison with the relationship between Polish and other languages in Poland.

The paper presents the educational situation of Romani children in Poland. It reflects on the actions of the Polish state contributing to the improvement of the process of educating Romani people. The paper discusses the position of women in Romani society. The author presents the var- ious roles a romni (Romani for woman) plays. She refers to the rules of the moral and ethical code (romanipen) that significantly affects female behavior, determines the relationship be- tween females and males, and assigns women a lower position in society than men. The paper also discusses the ‘impurities’ that constitute a specific weapon Romani women can wield against men. The author observes the changes that are taking place in the world of modern romnis. They are increasingly more educated, professionally active and make independent decisions con- cerning their own future. It should be borne in mind, however, that they continue to live in a closed community that guards its traditions, language and privacy. To change the life of Romani women would mean their leaving this community and abandoning the fundamental principles of Romani life, which is difficult. Romani women do not struggle for these princi- ples to be abandoned completely, thus giving them equal rights. They continue to guard their traditions and hearth and home.

The relationship to Romani people is characterised by deeply rooted negative stereotypes and significant distance between them and the Polish people. Comparative research on representative groups of Polish, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian people showed that Poles declare relatively better attitude towards the Romani than other nations. The article presents the results of research conducted in 2013 among students of Higher School of Business National-Louis University in Nowy Sącz, Poland. The place was selected due to the fact that in Nowy Sącz and its vicinity there is a large number of people from the group that is considered to be the poorest among the Romani – Bergitka Roma. Although nearly 60% of the respondents have contacts with Romani people, their opinions reveal negative stereotypes, declared distance and the view that the Romani people should be excluded from political elections, which is held by 20% of the respondents.

The history of the Gypsies concentrate on the research of their language because the language itself gives proof of their Indian origin. Scientists compared romani dialects with Sanscrit and New Indo-Aryan languages, which let them acknowledge that the Gypsies probably come from India. They left India in 10th century for unknown reasons. The romani language has been an oral language despite many trials to codify it. It has gone through a basic evolutionary way of being formed spontaneously by people. Nowadays, a lack of langauge standards and loanwords cause a problem for the Gypsies all over the world to communicate. However, whole Gypsy`s culture, including a language, is a mosaic of different cultures met on their century-old journey. The romani language illustrates routes of Gypsies migration and outer influences. Comminucation in the romani let the Gypsy save their tradition, sustain group identity and strengthen inner solidarity. The language is for them a certain code, known and used almost exclusively by the Gypsies. Although it is not single and common for all their speakers, it plays a linking role.

The upbringing and education students from other the majority groups of the population puts higher demands on teachers. This is accountable to the specifics of the cultural and social background of these students, particularly students of Romani descent. Given the situation with 300,000 Roma living in the Czech Republic, and about half  a million in the Slovak Republic, nearly every teacher may meet Romani students at the schools. Preparation of teachers for the specifics of the Romani culture is therefore important, as it helps teachers in the pedagogic sphere form relationships with Romani children and adolescents, as well as in the andragogical sphere with Romani parents.

The methods of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) are still a novelty in Poland and they need to be improved. While seeking the patterns of implementation of the idea of restorative justice in criminal law, it may be noteworthy to refer to the customary Romani ‘courts’ that exist in modern Europe. In the paper, the Authoress outlines the history and customs of Polish Roma Gypsy people, still little known to the wider society. An essential part of the paper is devoted to the description of the functioning of so-called Romani courts. The conformity of their assumptions with the conception of circle models of restorative justice through a demonstration of Romani model against the background of other models described in the literature is then analysed.
Metody alternatywnego rozwiązywania sporów (ADR) są w Polsce wciąż rzeczą nową i wymagającą udoskonalenia. Poszukując wzorców realizacji idei sprawiedliwości naprawczej w prawie karnym, warto pochylić się nad zwyczajowymi „sądami” romskimi funkcjonującymi we współczesnej Europie. Autorka zarysowuje mało znaną szerszemu odbiorcy historię i obyczajowość polskich Romów. Zasadniczą część artykułu poświęca opisowi funkcjonowania tak zwanych sądów romskich. Analizuje zgodność ich założeń z koncepcją kręgów sprawiedliwości naprawczej poprzez ukazanie modelu romskiego na tle innych opisywanych w literaturze przedmiotu.

This essay reviews the exceptional and outstanding, interdisciplinary book by Sławomir Kapralski, Naród z popiołów: Pamięć zagłady a tożsamość Romów [Nation out of the Ashes: The Memory of Destruction and the Identity of the Romani] against the background of literature in memory studies. It outlines the structure and composition of the book and focuses on the author’s most important propositions in sociological theory. The following propositions are presented and critically reviewed: creative reconstruction and synthesis of identity theories, redefinition of the notion of social memory, general conception and general theory of memory, middle range theory of memory production, and conception of the role of trauma in relation to memory and identity. These propositions, although they require further refinement, amendment or reformulation, are considered an immensely important contribution to sociological theory. The conceptions and theories about the relations between memory, trauma and identity that have grown out of the study of the Romani are also applicable to other collectivities.

The sound of Romani tabors as an example of acoustic communication with the world. This paper complements latest research into sounds. Specifically, it discusses the processes affecting acoustic communication with the ambient world in the field of sounds from different elements of Romani tabors. Indeed, Steven Feld notes that all relations of human being with soundscape can be seen and studied as anthropology of sounds. The author carried out an in-depth analysis of the phenomena in soundscape of past Romani life. The paper presents the sonic ways of non-verbal communication in the Romani world as a medium of cultural identity a global context and as a valuable example of interdisciplinary studies in which many references to humanities are made.

Purpose: To analyse the frequency of chronic diseases among Romani people who are sixty and older as well as their health-promoting lifestyle. Materials and methods: This research was conducted as a descriptive study between January 2015 and June 2015. The study included 98 elderly Romani people lived in Samsun, Turkey. The study data were collected using the questionnaire included 22 questions along with the Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale II. The statistical analysis of the data was made using percentage means, t-test, correlation, and ANOVA test. Results: The average age of the participating Romani people was 66.7±5.3. Of these Romani people, 83.7% had a chronic disease, and 80.6% had a medication that they used regularly. The mean score of the Romani citizens in the study sample on the Health-promoting Lifestyle Scale was 115.98±15.82. They obtained their highest score on the inter-personal relations sub-dimension and the lowest score on the stress management sub-dimension of the scale. There was a statistical correlation between the Romani people's gender, social insurance, income level, education level, family type, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure monitoring and their scores on the scale (p<0.05). The study found that a health-promoting lifestyle did not affect the frequency of chronic diseases (p˃0.05). Conclusions: This study proved that the Romani people had risks of chronic diseases, did not attach sufficient importance to a health-promoting lifestyle and their health-promoting lifestyle is weaker compared to the elders in the rest of the population.
