    During Trajan Decius’s reign (249–251) in a number of provincial mints – Alexandria, Caesarea Maritima, Magnesia ad Sipylum and Nicomedia – coins were issued featuring the theme of the barbarian (an enemy or a captive) in reverse iconography. In this article, I discuss these coins, considering them in the context of the iconographic tradition and the activity of the particular mints during Decius’s reign, and also in relation to the ideology of victory and the dynastic ideology. They are interesting especially because the theme of the barbarian was not utilised in the parallel imperial coinage. Nevertheless, its presence in provincial coinage is also of a marginal nature. Moreover, the end of Decius’s reign also coincided with a time-related hiatus in the use of the theme in provincial coinage.

    Opis:
    The image of the “founder”, who marks the boundaries of the city with a plough drawn by a pair of animals was one of the obvious themes placed on the reverses of colonial coins. Such a symbolic foundation scene (aratrum motif) was also one of the leading themes on coins from the colonial mint in Parium in the east of the Roman Empire. During the reign of Hadrian (AD 117–138), this mint issued coins (RPC 3, nos 1539 and 1540), which, apart from the aratrum motif, have an unobvious legend on their reverses, especially in its connection with the obverse inscription on these coins.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest podsumowanie aktualnego stanu badań na temat napływu monet prowincjonalnych zarejestrowanych na obszarze historycznej Małopolski. Pod pojęciem „mennictwa prowincjonalnego” rozumiane są tutaj zarówno monety prowincjonalne bite w mennicach produkujących monety na użytek danej prowincji, jak i tzw. monety pseudoautonomiczne i autonomiczne bite w mennicach lokalnych. W niniejszym tekście uwzględnione zostały monety produkowane w mennicach zlokalizowanych we wschodniej części Cesarstwa Rzymskiego poczynając od Dacji i Mezji, i położonych dalej na Wschód i Południe aż po prowincje w Azji Mniejszej, Syrię i Egipt, jak również monety bite przez władców Królestwa Bosporańskiego. Ramy chronologiczne niniejszych rozważań wyznaczają końcowe dziesięciolecia Republiki / początek Cesarstwa oraz reforma Dioklecjana (294 r. n.e.). Pod uwagę zostały wzięte przede wszystkim znaleziska monet brązowych i tzw. bilonowych. Jedynie krótki akapit poświęcony został monecie srebrnej.
    The aim of the present article is to summarize a current state of research on the problem of inflow of Roman provincial coins into Lesser Poland in antiquity. The term “provincial coinage” as used here refers to coins from the mints producing coinages for the purpose of provincial circulation, as well as to the so-called pseudo-autonomous and autonomous coinages struck by various local mints. We consider coins produced in mints located in the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, beginning from Dacia and Moesia, and farther east and south to the provinces of Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt as well as these struck by the rulers of the Bosporan Kingdom. The chronological scope of this presentation is defined by the final decades of the Roman Republic/the beginning of the Roman Empire and the Diocletian’s reform (AD 294). We shall concentrate on the relevant finds of bronze coinage and the so-called billon coins. Only one brief paragraph is devoted to silver issues.

    A recently uncovered assemblage of 13 coins, some of significant dating value, but all loose finds from fieldwork conducted by the Polish–Egyptian Conservation Mission, is discussed in the context of earlier coin finds recorded by the two Polish projects involved in the archaeological excavation and conservation of the Marina el-Alamein site on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. The focus is foremost on predominantly Roman provincial coins originating from the Alexandrian mint. One of these bears a mark indicative of its use as a pendant. Hadrian bronzes, most numerous in this group, along with coins of Trajan and Antoninus Pius corroborate a peak in the development of the town in the 2nd century AD, while late Roman imperial specimens are direct evidence for its continued functioning in the late antique period.
