Opis:
The 2017 season saw the conclusion of the first phase of the Preservation Project at the Kom el-Dikka site. The new visitors' route was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Antiquities of Egypt, Dr Khaled al- Anany. Archaeological excavations continued to be focused on a huge mound of ashes and urban refuse, located to the south of the Imperial Bath complex in the central part of the Kom el-Dikka site. The mound accumulated over the ages from the 4th to the 7th century AD, covering the ruins of early Roman dwelling houses. The report gives an overview of digging in this area, where a substantial part of a house was cleared. It includes also a summary of conservation work performed on mosaics and monuments of ancient architecture.

Opis:
The article presents the private houses of Ptolemais’ inhabitants in the context of the history and urban development of a city with a thousand-year-long history. Four periods can be distinguished in the history of Ptolemais: the first since the creation of the city’s final spatial development plan in the 2nd century BC until the Jewish Revolt in 115–117 AD; the second in the 2nd–3rd centuries AD under the sign of development and growing aspirations of Ptolemais; the third in the 4th century AD until the first half of the 5th century AD, when the city served as the capital of the province of Libya Superior; and the fourth, from the end of the 5th century AD until the mid-7th century AD, in which Ptolemais, after a short period of crisis related to the nomad invasions, flourished again until the appearance of the Arabs, marking the end of the ancient city, although not the end of settlement in its area. Within this historical framework, changes in the city’s buildings and the transformation of private houses can be identified, and various cultural influences associated with the arrival of new residents at different times with their baggage of experience or with the more or less significant presence of representatives of the civil and military administration of the Roman Empire can be seen.

Opis:
Daughters of the Habsburgs, fulfilling the dynastic policy of the family, married European rulers. The aim was to enter into profitable alliances or gain prospective financial aid. In 1553 Katarzyna Habsburżanka (Catherine of Austria) married Zygmunt August (Sigismund II Augustus). It was not a happy marriage. Katarzyna was not able to give her husband a much awaited son, thus, form the end of the 1550s their married life showed signs of falling apart. In 1559 the issue of the king’s divorce appeared for the first time. Despite intense exchange of legation between the Polish king and Maximillian II, Holy Roman Emperor, Katarzyna left the Crown in October 1566. However, Zygmunt August did not get a divorce and, thus, lost a chance to have a legal descendant. Archduchesses Barbara (Barbara of Austria) and Joanna (Joanna of Austria) were married to the rulers on the Apennine Peninsula. The first one became the wife of Alfonso II d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, Joanna was the wife of Francesco I de’Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Both these marriages constituted a kind of agreement: Italian dukes counted on a powerful ally in the struggle for domination of the Apennine Peninsula; the Habsburgs expected mainly financial and military help in the campaign against Turkey. Marriages of Barbara and Joanna, like that of their sister Katarzyna, were not totally happy, although they did not end in separation. The fates of the Habsburg sisters clearly show that marriages concluded between members of the reigning houses not always fulfilled the expectations of the involved parties.

Site 15 in Mąkolice, Głowno commune, is located in central Poland, on the Łowicz-Błonie Plain. The majority of obtained archaeological sources are related to the settlement of the population of the Przeworsk culture. The most interesting features include relics of structures of two post buildings – a long house and an accompanying building, discovered in the southern part of the settlement. The most important stage of the settlement can be linked to the C2 – D1 phase.

Opis:
Marina el-Alamein, a small town situated around 100 km west of Alexandria, is a good example of a middle-sized settlement flourishing during the first three centuries AD. The present paper analyses the urban layout and plan of the settlement. The main hypothesis proposed here is based on the results of excavations conducted on the site since 1986. Thanks to the observations from the field, in addition to analyses of the already excavated structures, it was possible to reconstruct the street system and divide the urban space into three zones: the coastal zone (port area), the residential quarters, and the necropolis. All of them were situated on three natural terraces. The northern part, located along the seashore, was occupied by the port and warehouses. On the second terrace, wealthy residential quarters with a relatively large bathhouse complex were spread along the coast. Finally, a large necropolis with several types of monumental tombs created a border between the town and the desert.

Opis:
Archeological work in the 2012 and 2013 seasons in Jiyeh (Porphyreon), which lies on the Phoenician coast north of ancient Sidon, was focused on reconstructing the history of settlement on the site. At least three phases were identified and dated to the Iron Age II, the Persian– Hellenistic–Roman period and late antiquity. The early dating of the functioning of the Christian basilica to the 4th–5th century AD was also confirmed in trial pits. The complex and unusual sewage installation discharging rainwater from the roofs and streets of the 5th-century settlement contributed important data for studies of late antique domestic architecture in the region.
