ROMAN HISTORY
ROME (CITY)
Opis:
In order to determine the number of inhabitants of the city of Rome in the imperial period, scholars have used four methods. The first one takes into account the amount of grain distributed each day to the population, the second one the quantity of grain imported to Rome every year, the third one the number of houses and insulae, the fourth one, less useful for the period discussed in this article, the amount of pork distributed to the inhabitants. It seems certain that at that time Rome could have had a million inhabitants, crowded in an unbearably small space. This number began to diminish in the 4th century A.D.

Roman military history
Opis:
History of the Roman army – in a broad sense – was one of the pillars of Géza Alföldy’s scholarly studies and investigations. His inspiring interpretations of various inscriptions had a fundamental impact on the shape of contemporary science. He was particularly interested in such issues as religion of the Roman military, the origins of soldiers, the rules of promotion and the careers of officers with senatorial and equestrian lineage.   The article offers an overview of major studies in history of the Roman army published in the recent years. There is no doubt that many had been inspired by the work and writings of Géza Alföldy. Although it is merely a subjective selection, the list of publications appended to the article attests to the intensity of such research, showing that it truly flourishes.  Strictly speaking, Géza Alföldy did not come up with any novel research problems as far as the Roman military was concerned. He would address those which had been present in science, as it is documented by works of such scholars as  Alfred von Domaszewski, Konrad Kraft, Emil Ritterling, Eric Birley or Arthur and Ernst Stein. Nonetheless, Géza Alföldy understood the essence and appreciated the need to pursue those studies in greater depth while utilizing epigraphy to the broadest possible extent. Quite rightly, he considered inscriptions to be the foremost sources in that respect. Guided by hic saxa loquntur as his motto, Alföldy determined the shape of methodology employed in studies of the Roman army through his work. The ordinary soldiers and officers became genuine individuals, which in a sense enabled one to gain insight into their personal lives, professional careers, family ties, and religious beliefs. Thus far, research in the two first decades of the 21st century follows the same path. It may only be desired that, as a result, the current state of our knowledge will be substantially enriched.

Roman History
Latin Epigraphy
Opis:
One very prominent context of the Pre-Christian history of Armenia of course lies with its relations with the great neighbouring empires of Parthia and Rome. These relations were mainly the result of Armenia’s geopolitical location between the two empires, its natural resources and its control of strategic long-distance routes. From a Roman point of view, Armenia certainly was the most important geopolitical concern in the East. Roman-Armenian relations therefore are a vast and complex subject, and their history extends over many centuries. In the years between 114 and 117 AD these relations assumed an extraordinary albeit short-lived condition when the kingdom of Greater Armenia became a Roman province. The present contribution reviews the Roman inscriptions that can be dated to this period, as well as the historical evidence they provide for the history of Greater Armenia as a Roman province.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse Ronald Syme’s view of History through the work of one of his best and most insightful critics, Professor Géza Alföldy. The two historians maintained a personal and professional relationship for a quarter of a century. This enabled Alföldy to understand the intricacies of the entire body of work of the Camden Professor of Ancient History at the University of Oxford as few others have done, thereby becoming one of his finest critics.

Opis:
The history of the kingdom of Greater Armenia (after 188 BCE–428 CE) has been generally interpreted from two different standpoints, an ‘inner’ and an ‘outer’ one. Greater Armenia as a marginal entity or a sidekick of Rome during the endless war with Iran, and even Iranian scholars neglected or diminished the role of Armenia in the balance of power. This paper discussed some methodological issues.

Ammianus’ extant books offer unusually rich material on the events concerning the kingdom of Greater Armenia. Polybios; Roman history; Roman armies; military thought; Justus Lipsius
Opis:
In the common opinion of the classicists Polybios’ Historiae are considered to be an extremely reliable source for the reconstruction of the Republican Roman army organization. The problem is he did not have the declared military experience, but also did not always describe what he actually saw. In the sixth book of Historiae there are some ideal-type suggestions which are the legacy of a specific literary genre called tactica. Polybios was one of the authors of this kind of military treaties. What is more, in the other fragments of his work he committed an archaization, presenting the image of the Roman armed forces probably from the fourth century BC. All this makes that uncritical taking of his arguments may lead to distortions in the image of the studied subject.

Cleopatra VII

Opis:
The author discusses the circumstances of Cleopatra VII taking power as the sole ruler of Egypt in 49/48 BC. The queen was forced out of Alexandria by her brother and co-regent Ptolemy XIII. When she reappeared in Egypt, it was from Palestine. The author considers the possibility that she traveled from Alexandria through the Thebaid, the Meroitic Kingdom and Arabia to Palestine, where she expected to obtain financial support necessary for recruiting mercenaries. She need not have modeled her political activity on that of the Meroitic kandake, but personal contacts between the two queens are plausible. The author suggests that a woman’s head represented on the cover of a box containing a mirror, found at Faras in Nubia, may be a portrait of Cleopatra.

The so-called “Night Battle” of Singara (344 AD) still remains poorly studied historical event because of discrepancies between the sources. The outcome of the battle is described in them with considerable discrepancies too. The analysis of the sources from the point of view of the “classical theory of war” elaborated by C. Clausewitz, unambiguously demonstrates that the winning side in this battle were Persians.
