The article examines the Enlightenment ideas in the part of Vera Mutafchieva’s work. The time of Kardzhali, a specific period of chaos and marauding in the Ottoman Empire in the 18th and 19th century, is a period of the formation of enlightenment processes that Mutafchieva depicted through images and themes in her novels and scientific studies. The author is an Ottoman specialist known worldwide and one of the greatest novelists in Bulgaria. In her novels, she portrays philosophical and geopolitical ones that characterize the historical epoch embodied in her works.

Bulgarian museums, which present the National Revival period, form a whole category of exhibitions, the specifics of which are recognizable to a wide range of audiences. Themessages in these museums are not entirely unknown; on the contrary - there are certain preliminary expectations for them, the answer to which leads to satisfaction from the visit. In the minds of many Bulgarians, visiting these exhibitions, as well as the satisfaction of this act, are "mandatory". The artefacts construct an idea of the dynamics of social development, in which the virtues of the "old" society are complemented by modern European ideas of the era, and innovations in the life of Bulgarians happen only for the better. The presence of the exhibits in the museums of the Bulgarian National Revival is completely subordinated to the general presentation idea. Their main function is to illustrate the specific topic - the photograph visualizes a figure or location, the document testifies to them truth, and the personal belonging evokes adoration. From this point of view, artefacts play a supporting rather than a catalytic role - instead of "items with history", museums show "history complemented by items".

Palm trees experience their revival. They are becoming commonly used in interior arrangements, recreational management of space in town, the example of which may be the city beaches by the Spree in Berlin. Palm trees are also symbolic of martyrdom, victory and eternal life. The present article presents in its first part a short review of chosen kinds and types of palms with brief morphological characteristics. The possibilities of making use of these comely trees in landscape architecture have been included in the review. The symbol of the palm has also been applied in design and architectural constructions through palmettoes, ornaments or palm tree vaulting. The following text is an attempt to draw attention to the prevailing "palm fashion".

Paradoxical Bulgarian reception of the Bible during the National RevivalThis paper is focused on the difficulties that Bulgarian reception of the Bible encountered in nineteenth century – the lack of older canonical translations and the opposition of the Ecumenical Patriarchate against new translations, which were associated with Protestantism. Some instances that illustrate the ideas of the Bulgarians from that period are presented. One of them is from Two Brothers (Dvama bratya; 1888–1889) by Iliya Blaskov – a semi-documental novel dealing with the fates of the author’s family. The author concludes that the image of the Holy Scripture that even pious teachers had at that time was vague and closer to folklore than to modern biblical notions. Paradoksalna bułgarska recepcja Biblii w czasie odrodzenia narodowegoArtykuł prezentuje problemy bułgarskiej recepcji Biblii w XIX wieku – brak starszego tłumaczenia kanonicznego, a także opór Patriarchatu Konstantynopola wobec nowego przekładu kojarzonego z protestantyzmem. W pracy omówiono kilka przykładów bułgarskich koncepcji przekładu Pisma Świętego. Jedna z nich pochodzi z utworu Двама братя (1888–1889) Ilii Błyskowa – quasi-dokumentalnej powieści opowiadającej o losach rodziny autora. Okazuje się, że obraz Pisma Świętego, jaki mieli w tamtym czasie działacze bułgarskiego odrodzenia narodowego, był bardzo mglisty i bliższy folklorowi aniżeli nowoczesnym kategoriom.

The article depicts reflection over the issue of changes in the Bulgarian anthroponymy from the Bulgarian  National  Revival  period,  which  usually  consists  in  an  inconsistent,  i.e.  concerning only several  historical  figures,  substitution  of  the  Greek  form  Joan  by  the  native  form-  Ivan. Furthermore, the author does not comprehensively answer the questions how and why it happened, although they present the issue as a complex one and possible to conceptualize in myriad ways.

The aim of this article is to explore the most recent literary representations of the so-called “Revival process” in Bulgarian history or the renaming of the Bulgarian Muslim and Turkish minorities in the 1980s in Zlatko Enev’s Requiem for Nobody (Реквием за никого, 2011), Martin Marinov’s The Veil (Булото, 2014), Miroslav Penkov’s The Stork Mountain (Щъркелите и планината, 2016), and Liudmila Mindova’s Novel for the Name (Роман за името, 2017). The analysis focuses on the outlining of the thematic and structural similarities between the novels and the different approaches toward the depiction of trauma. I argue that this new trend is an attempt to rethink the legacy of the communist past and conceptualize collective trauma.

Aim. The paper analyses the Islamic revival in Russia in the late 20th century and early 21st. This was reflected in the registration of religious communities, the publication of periodicals on Muslim literature, and, in my opinion, most importantly - the construction of mosques and madrassas. It highlights the roles of mosques and madrassas built in the North Caucasus, which later became the theological centers for the spread of Islam and educated youngsters according to their propaganda. Methods. The study mainly uses an analysis method based on the study of historicism, documents and empirical material. The basis of the source are books, scientific articles, research works conducted by Russian and foreign experts. Results. The post-Soviet wars (1994-1996 and 1999-2000) in Chechnya contributed to the politicisation and realisation of Islam in this region. In 1996-1999 there were 26 Sharia courts, numerous Islamic parties, charitable foundations and organisations in the republic and, most importantly, structures of Wahhabi organisations (Akaev, n.d.). The process of politicisation gradually turned into organisational formations in Russia in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Conclusion. The constructive transformation by reinforcing the modernist potentials of Islam has contributed to the real renewal of Russian Muslim societies, which led to the radicalisation of the whole region. The described events have shown that for the last 20 years, the revival of religious Islam was a revival of political organisations and activities, where religion is connected to politics and criminal activities. A small North Caucasian republic immediately turned up at the center of Russia's recent history. Key Words: Islam, politics, revival, radicalization, Russia, North Caucasus

W artykule poddano analizie postać głównego bohatera Tajemnicy Lorda Singelworth z perspektywy XIX-wiecznej imagologii. Z tej analizy wynika, że postać została skonstruowana z rozpowszechnionych w ówczesnej Europie stereotypów na temat Brytyjczyków. Tłumaczą one dziwactwa Singelwortha: latanie balonem, obsesję czystości. Wyjaśniają również, dlaczego większość obserwatorów balonowej pasji lorda zgodnie przyjmowała zaskakujące jej wyjaśnienie – pragnienie uregulowania kłopotów gastrycznych. Uzupełnia ten zestaw charakterystyczna wyniosłość, moralna motywacja działań, poczucie misji i eskapizm. Autor tekstu stawia tezę, że tak skonstruowana figura Anglika, umiejscowiona w Wenecji u progu historycznych zmian mogła być literackim autoportretem Norwida.
The paper presents an analysis of the protagonist of Tajemnica Lorda Singelworth [Lord Singleworth’s Secret] in terms of the 19th century imagology. The analysis shows that the character was created on the basis of stereotypes of the British that were popular in Europe at that time. They account for Singleworth’s oddities such as flying in a hot air balloon or his obsession with cleanliness. They also explain why the majority of those who observed Lord’s balloon passion unanimously accepted its surprising justification – the need to deal with his gastric problems. This is then complemented by the peculiar arrogance, moral motivation for action, sense of mission and escapism. The author of the paper assumes that the character of an Englishman developed in such a way and placed in Venice on the threshold of historical changes might be a literary self-portrait of Norwid.

Celem artykułu jest analiza na przykładzie kultury buriackiej wybranych zmian w obrębie kultur rdzennych Syberii w epoce po rozpadzie Związku Radzieckiego, a właściwie po przemianach ustrojowych i społecznych, jakie miały miejsce po „upadku komunizmu”. Przeprowadzono analizę rozpowszechnionej w literaturze przedmiotu koncepcji teoretycznej, jaką jest „polityka odrodzenia kultur”, by następnie przejść do analiz związku odrodzenia kultur rdzennych ludów syberyjskich z odrodzeniem religijnym na terenach Syberii. Pokazano, jak zmiany polityczne i gospodarcze powiązane są ze zmianami kulturowymi i religijnymi tworzącymi dla Buriatów nowy kontekst działań wymykający się niejednokrotnie prostym kategoryzacjom. Zwrócono uwagę na współdziałanie czynników określanych jako „odgórne”, narzucane w skali organizmu państwo-politycznego i czynników „oddolnych”, to jest działań lokalnych, czasami wręcz jednostkowych twórczo nawiązujących do lokalnych kontekstów i lokalnego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Artykuł podkreśla szczególną rolę zmian związanych z odrodzeniem religijnym dla całości zmian wynikłych z upadku Związku Radzieckiego oraz wskazuje ich implikacje dla rdzennych kultur syberyjskich.
The aim of the article is to analyse the selected changes within the cultures of indigenous peoples in Siberia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, or more precisely after the political and social transformations that took place after the “fall of communism” as exemplified by the Buryat culture. An analysis of the theoretical concept of “policy of cultural revival”, which is widespread in the literature on the subject, is followed by the analysis of the connection between the revival of the cultures of Siberian indigenous peoples and the religious revival in Siberia. Political and economic change has been shown to be linked to cultural and religious change, creating a new context for the Buryats that often defies simple categorisation. Attention was drawn to the interaction of “top-down” factors imposed at the national-political level and “bottom-up” factors, i.e. activities undertaken locally, or sometimes even individually, which make creative reference to local contexts and local cultural heritage. The paper highlights the importance of religious revival for all the changes brought about by the collapse of the Soviet Union and points to their implications for indigenous Siberian cultures.

The separation of theory and practice of the European integration created a very dangerous situation for the European Union. The article presents this crisis from the points of view of philosophy, political science and journalism. The“European poison of thought” expressed by a lack of trust of citizens towards the EU institutions perceived as inadequate in addressing the most fundamental problems of the EU citizens, as well as scepticism towards the enlargement of the Union, aversion to financial solidarity with weaker Member States, and disappointment with legal overregulation and money wasting, are just a few out of a long list of problems that make people lose their trust in the European integration. The author also considers the greatest weaknesses of the European Union: preferring interests of those who are present and well-organised on the political arena and the fact that the real majority of EU citizens stays outside the formal democratic structures thus becoming a part of the process of exclusion and fragmentation. The state of affairs in the EU, following according to Karl Jaspers, is called a limit situation, where it possible either to withdraw or rise and exceed restrictions. The author considers hope and radicalism as two forces that power the European political activists; in order to unite them, a new faith, values and hope based on the traditional foundations are needed. This new way of thinking about the EU, the joined-up thinking, is possibly a response to the demand for a radical revival in the EU.
