Opis:
Research background: The commercialization of non-governmental organizations through undertaking an activity based on the commercial sale of services and products is a phenomenon which raises controversy among numerous researchers. Traditionally, NGOs act in a sector of social services to solve problems, such as homelessness, exclusion or social pathologies. They also provide different services which cannot be provided by the market, for instance in education, the healthcare system, culture, or art. Driven by a social mission, NGOs introduce their concepts, strongly relying on fees to perform their activity. They also obtain funds in the form of public donations or payments from private or institutional donors. Growing social needs and changes in the governmental policy aimed at reducing social-aid spending have put pressure on NGOs to develop entrepreneurial strategies to gain financial support. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to investigate how particular funding sources affect the probability of non-governmental organizations? commercialization. Methods: Data for the analyses have been collected from a national survey of Polish non-governmental organizations. In the analysis of logistic regression, a specially-developed model was used to estimate the probability of NGOs? commercialization, depending on the selected categories of funding sources. Findings & Value added: An analysis of the results indicates clearly that the likelihood of NGOs? commercialization slightly decreases as a greater number of private external financial sources is used. In contrast with existing literature, which claims that government funding is crowding out commercial activity, this research finds that, to some extent, public funds positively stimulate the commercialization of NGOs. The contribution of this research is that it introduces the category of internal financing sources of non-profit organizations, which have been overlooked in previous studies. The article provides clear statistical arguments demonstrating that private internal revenues strongly affect the commercialization of the organizations surveyed. The paper is the first to present a model that comprehensively considers the probability of NGOs? commercialization, including private external and internal, as well as public, sources of funding.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – This paper aims at examining the impact of revenue diversification on the quality of loan portfolio. The interest has been stimulated by the growing appetite for nontraditional activities among banks due to the declining interest income and rising nonperforming loans. Design/methodology/approach – The study considers a sample of 67 countries and quarterly banking sector financial reports over the period 2016Q1-2018Q4.The data are extracted from the International Monetary Fund Financial Soundness Indicators (FSI) database and are analysed through fixed effect regression as supported by the Haus-man test. Findings – The study finds that revenue diversification impairs the quality of the loan portfolio. The findings are attributable to loss of focus, lack of expertise in managing non-lending activities, and possible agency problems. Moreover, the study controls for several banking sector-specific factors that affect the quality of loan portfolio. The results show that credit growth and banking sector performance improve the quality of loan portfolio quality. However, the banking sector capitalisation and cost efficiency lower the loan portfolio rate, but the banking sector size has no significant effect. Research implications/limitations – Based on the findings, the study recommends that practitioners and regulators focus on innovative loans appraisal and monitoring practices instead of diversifying into non-interest generating activities. Originality/value/contribution – Unlike previous studies that focused on the relationship between income diversification and bank performance, this study contributes to the literature by examining the relationship between revenue diversification and quality of loan portfolio, thus bringing in a new insight into the bank revenue diversification debate.

Opis:
This article aims to assess the income situation of households in Poland, considering the level of receipts and income as well as their dynamics and structure. An analysis was also carried out with respect to differences between particular socio-economic groups and between households depending on the number of persons in a household. The Gini coefficient was used for analytical purposes. Moreover, an attempt was made to identify the causes of income diversification. The analysis was carried out based on data derived from household budget surveys conducted by Statistics Poland. The research covered the period from 2000 to 2019 (individual years). The study showed a real increase in the average monthly net receipts and available income in all households. The most favour[1]able financial situation was observed in white-collar workers, self-employed persons and one-person households. The least favourable income situation was found in households of blue[1]collar workers and pensioners and households of six or more persons. However, attention should also be paid to changes taking place in the structure of sources of income generated by household members. There is an increase in income from hired work and social assistance benefits. The highest variations in receipts and available income were observed in households of farmers and those of six or more persons. In contrast, the smallest variations were recorded with respect to households of old-age pensioners and one-person households.
