Opis:
Organizational reporting is the most important tool of communication between an enterprise and its stakeholders. However, it is not a static tool but continues to develop and adapt to ongoing economic and social changes. Formerly covering only financial information; currently, it is supplemented by a wide range of non-financial information relating to all aspects of the business. The evolution of reporting is particularly fostered by the rapid development of the concepts of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development, as well as the progressing changes in the information needs of stakeholders. Enterprises are increasingly publishing voluntary reports concerning the social, environmental, and employment aspects of their business in addition to reports required by law. This results in the multiplication of reports and duplication of content, which has a negative impact on the reports' usefulness. The solution to this problem may be integrated reporting, which integrates and interconnects financial and non-financial disclosures. A milestone for the development of integrated reporting was the elaboration of integrated reporting guidelines by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) in December 2013. The aim of the paper is to present the development of integrated reporting in Poland in 2014-2020 on the example of public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The quality of reports was assessed from the point of view of compliance with IIRC guidelines, as well as their usefulness for stakeholders. Content analysis of corporate publications and comparative analysis was used for this purpose.

The purpose of this paper is to identify the effects of the implementation of selected regulations on corporate governance in the reporting practice of banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The survey examined the disclosures concerning the main features of the internal control and risk management systems in relation to financial reporting in banks. Research studies on disclosures related to control over financial reporting have not yet been conducted. The paper uses a research method involving the analysis of annual reports disclosed by banks. The method of induction was used in the process of inference. The results of the study indicate that in the practice of reporting of banks listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 2011, there was no uniform reporting form in terms of the presentation of information on internal control or risk management systems in relation to financial reporting. The disclosures were different both in terms of level of detail and content. In some banks disclosures were drawn at a high level of generality.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the content of disclosures presented by public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange on the internal control and risk management systems in relation to financial reporting. Methodology: The study contents were formulated with the use of literature studies. Content analysis studies and disclosure index studies were used for the study of narrative disclosures. The research was of a qualitative nature. Results: The results showed that the companies listed on the Polish capital market are still at the stage of formulating reporting practices in the area of control systems over financial reporting. It should be noted that the diversity in information presented within disclosures about control systems over financial reporting is considerable. For some companies, the disclosures are formulated at such a high level of generality that no firm conclusions can be drawn. Detailed items of disclosures presented by particular companies can be identified in the reporting practices. The findings may provide the basis for constructing an index of disclosures about control systems over financial reporting. Scope of research: The study examined disclosures about internal control and risk management systems in relation to financial reporting presented by public companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Originality: Disclosures about internal control and risk management systems in relation to financial reporting are a relatively new issue in Polish practice. The literature studies carried out as part of the research indicate that this issue is a research gap.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is the presentation of the essence of non-financial reporting, the transposition of the Directive into Polish law and, as a result, the extension of mandatory disclosure (including reporting standards). Design/methodology/approach: The article is based on an analysis of literature with the use of analysis method (including the analysis of subject literature, legal acts, reports and studies prepared by various institutions published on the Internet), the descriptive method and graphical data presentation method. Findings: The structure of the study includes the presentation of: the essence of the problem, the scope of mandatory disclosure, standards that may govern its preparation and the initial conclusions resulting from the analyses of reports of companies obliged to report non-financial data. The justification of the need to prepare non-financial reports is provided as the mitigation of information asymmetry that occurs among different stakeholder groups. Non-financial reporting is perceived as a chance to increase knowledge on chances and risks and to analyse and organize the company’s activities. Those types of reports allow to dialogue with stakeholders, build trust and eventually win the competitive advantage. Non-financial reports also form a knowledge database for managers, the use of which increase the effectiveness of management. Originality/value: The analysis, synthesis and systematics of the presented issues (such as the essence, scope and standards of mandatory non-financial reporting) are the value of this article. Its results contribute to further analysis and the result of the analysis should be creation of recommendations for entrepreneurs regarding the choice of non-financial reporting standards, its form and scope.

Opis:
Theoretical background: In 2022, the European Commission’s intensive efforts to revise and enhance the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) from 2014 resulted in the proposal of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the exposure draft on ESRS EDs (EFRAG Sustainable Reporting Standards Exposure Drafts). The ESRS drafts for public consultation presented the mandatory concepts and principles for sustainability reporting under the CSRD. The implementation of corporate sustainability is closely related to reporting that stimulates robustness of companies’ commitment to sustainability, and sustainable long-term actions taken by companies. Environment is priority, however, having in mind sophisticated environmental performance indicators, it is governance that ensures stakeholders whether the company exercises the sustainable obligations effectively. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to determine EFRAG draft standards compliance with the Warsaw Stock Exchange best practices and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards, and an assessment of WIG-20 reporting practices regarding EFRAG draft standards. The main research question was whether and to what extent WIG-20 companies meet the sustainable reporting exposure drafts on governance matters proposed by EFRAG. Research methods: The study method was desk-based research using the gathered corporate data. The assumptions on the importance of governance matters were supported by VOSviewer analysis of Scopus bibliometric database analysis. Main findings: The results of the study have shown that the scope and level of reported disclosures by WIG-20 companies – that are best performing and positive toward sustainability – is insufficient and reporting practices do not meet proposed EFRAG draft standards. The study contributes to scarce research addressing the sustainability reporting approach. It provides a study of the governance maters regarding draft governance reporting ESRS drafts.

Opis:
With the increase in the sense of responsibility for the activities of companies, ESG (Environmental, Social, Government) concepts in value management appeared. The reporting of environmental, social and ethical activities is an extremely complex issue, as evidenced by the variety of terms used to describe it. In Poland, the obligation to report on ESG results from the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which entered into force on January 2023. The aim of the study is to identify information flow process and its stakeholders in implementation of ESG reporting in Poland. The primary research method to achieve our objective was a literature review. As a result there was information flow process, main stakeholders and key stages of the ESG reporting process identified.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to systematise and present – against a background of the essence of ESG accounting – the applicable and proposed legal framework for non-financial reporting in Poland. Design/methodology/approach: The article uses qualitative research methods: the method of studying literature and legal acts, the method of analysis and synthesis, as well as the descriptive method and deductive inference. Findings: The results of the literature studies make it possible to conclude that the topic of ESG reporting is not new, but it is gaining importance, and this process will most probably continue. The growing demand and pressure for companies to be more environmentally and socially responsible are accompanied by the efforts that they make to present the best possible information in this area. To some extent, these activities are voluntary, but they are increasingly enforced by legal regulations. Non-financial information is gaining importance for various stakeholder groups, who are increasingly aware and sensitive to environmental, social and corporate governance issues. It, therefore, seems obvious that the disclosure of ESG information – in part voluntary and influencing marketing – is becoming increasingly regulated and necessary. This is evidenced by further EU regulations and their transposition into domestic legislation. Analysis of the regulations already in force and the draft CSRD Directive cited in the article clearly indicates that the European Commission has been increasing the obligations related to ESG reporting in recent years, and they will be further increased in the future. Originality/value: The value of the article is the analysis, synthesis and systematics of issues related to the essence and framework of non-financial reporting (sustainable development) in Poland, including issues related to the currently applicable and proposed European Union legislation.

Opis:
Integrated reporting (IR) is the latest approach to corporate reporting, currently most widely discussed topic in the literature on the subject. It is another stage in the evolution of the organization’s reporting and another attempt at its improvement. Presently, IR is questioned whether it really provides for a reliable presentation of the organization’s present and future performance, and whether integrated reporting will actually result in a better understanding of the economic and financial situation of a business entity and its accomplishments. The purpose of this article is an attempt at answering a question of whether an integrated report in its present form can in the future replace the current corporate reporting and constitute a potential solution to its shortcomings. The article uses the results of the literature studies on the subject, results of the authors’ earlier research studies, as well as observations of the current business practice in the area of integrated reporting.

Opis:
In a world of constantly growing streams of information, extensive transparency in public and private environment as well as recent financial crises, it seems to be essential to enhance reporting to a higher, more sophisticated level that considers these changes. Especially, the worldwide financial crisis showed that a separated view on financial and non-financial reporting and an orientation on solely short-term information are no longer appropriate for many stakeholders. Integrated Reporting - representing a symbiosis of financial and non-financial information - might be a solution to satisfy the changing stakeholder needs. In order to establish this idea, the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) was initiated aiming to provide quantitative and qualitative guidance in form of a framework for organizations on how to conduct integrated reporting. One of the main questions that arises within this context is whether IR is "a one size fits all"-solution or if there is a substantial need for sector-specific requirements. Therefore, this article provides not only a theoretical background on the concept of IR but also shows some results of experiences examining reporting habits of several, cross-sectoral companies participating in the IIRC's pilot programme. Additionally, general and sector-specific requirements as well as chances, challenges and a prospect of IR have to be considered. This article analyses if a general framework on IR is sufficient or if there is the necessity to work on sector-specific requirements.
