Opis:
Non-renewable fossil fuels are unable to fulfil today`s requirements of the societies in terms of energy requirements. The increasing demands for energy have emphasized the researchers to search for alternative sources of energy. Among distinct alternative energy resources, bioethanol has attracted an immense attention worldwide. Currently, lignocellulosic biomasses are considered as the largest renewable resources for the production of bioethanol due to its maximum abundance on the earth. Pre-treated lignocellulosic biomasses are converted into bioethanol by both direct microbial conversion and hydrolysis process along with fermentation. Immobilization and nanotechnology have shown effective roles in the improvement of bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomasses. This review focuses on recent developments in bioethanol production from varied lignocellulosic biomasses as cheep feedstock.

Opis:
Nowadays, alternative energy is being formed as a competitive and attractive sector for investment. The analysis has showed that: 1. Non-traditional renewable energy in Ukraine is not used to its full potential. This is related to certain technical and economical problems. Technical problems include issues concerning the stabilization of frequency and preservation of stability for electronic networks during power fluctuations in power plants which use non-traditional renewable energy sources. Economical problems include additional expenses on energetic systems, joined by facilities related to the preservation of stability and reliability of their work. Today, the development of placement and operation development for renewable energy assumes priority in the allocation of funding, defining perspective directions of development for renewable energy sources and defining the level of involvement in energy balance. It should be noted that it is appropriate to adopt a state program of development of renewable energy sources on the level of investment projects for basic local administrations. 2. Indicators “Potential energy savings” and “Realization of potential of renewable energy sources” provide an opportunity to assess the energy savings component in the national economy and calculate the realization of the potential for renewable energy sources in the long term. This calculation should be the basis of local planning and investment of facilities and systems of renewable energy sources. 3. Development of technologies based on non-conventional renewable energy sources, should be implemented, relying on government support and measures for administrative and economic stimulation. Namely, on the tax arrangements (tax holidays, reduced taxation for installations of alternative energy sources at the level of their construction and the initial period of use, at the level of permission for implementation of local tariffs for such facilities of energy generation, etc.), on the mechanisms of indirect stimulation (through the provision of preferences to land allocations for construction of such facilities, through simplified administrative procedures for project, construction and operational cycles, through the creation of positive image for companies that implement renewable energy projects).

Renewable energy will play a key role in the transition towards a competitive, secure and sustainable energy system. In 2014 the European Commission proposed an objective to increase the share of renewable energy to at least 27% of the EU's energy consumption by 2030. The European Council endorsed this target which is binding at EU level. The Renewable Energy Directive (Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC) was implemented in Poland on 20 February 2015 by the new renewable energy sources act. The objective of this article is to analyse the current state of the Polish energy sector related to the prosumer energy industry. It also describes the future potential for the development of prosumer energy in Poland. The analysis was conducted in the light of the new EU climate and energy initiatives. At the beginning, the article presents the current general state in the EU’s energy sector. European Union Climate and Energy Package targets up to 2050 and the state of renewable energy use gives the background to conduct an analysis of prospects for the development of prosumer energy in Poland. That is why the last part is devoted to the prosumer energy sector in Poland in the context of European Union regulations. The critical analysis of the current situation in that sector has made it possible to evaluate prospects for the development of prosumer energy in Poland in the context of the recently introduced legal regulations.

The main purpose of the article is to analyse the renewable energy sources labour market in the country based on the example of survey studies conducted in Lower Silesia in 2010 commissioned by the Marshal’s Office. The author took part in the discussed project as a member of the research team and is the co-author of the final publication. The study was conducted as part of a project by the Department of Economic Development of the Marshal’s Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship in 2010 entitled “Prognoses and analyses of the potential of the Lower Silesia to use renewable energy sources”. The article has analysed the following: employment in the RES sector, revenues and savings due to RES, and human resources. The author has also identified the pro-employment effects in the RES sector on the domestic and EU markets; she has also made prognoses for the demand for work in the RES sector. Study results show that the increase of employment in the sector resulting from the increase in production and installed power shall be related to biomass, solar power, and wind power technologies. From the data pertaining to employment in Lower Silesia one may conclude that the RES sector employs mostly specialists, managers, and physical labourers. Unmet demand for physical workers in the forestry and agricultural sectors is visible.

The aim of this paper is to show the state and prospects of development of biofuels production in chosen countries. Legal and financial regulations on biofuels production as well as opportunities of putting to use raw materials in order to this are also discussed. The paper indicates that the most significant producers of ethanol have been Brazil and the USA, while the biggest producers of biodiesel have been Germany, France and Italy.

The systems which use renewable energy are mostly distributed generation systems. Distributed generation may have positive influence on the reliability of energy supply due to faster recovery of the system after breakdowns. Additionally, it may improve the reliability at the user's and reduce the depths of voltage dips. One of the examples of distributed generation are photovoltaic systems. These systems can be connected to an electric power supply system and can work for a private network too. Efficient design of operating systems for a private network is not an easy task. In the article the above mentioned issues were presented and suitable conclusions were drawn.

This paper presents the results of the analysis and evaluation of the current Polish methods of recommendations how to use renewable energy sources (RES) in buildings. These recommendations are related to the use of existing RES resources, in order to balance the various forms of energy in a building. The current status of regulations introduced by EU directives and national legislation is included in the analysis. The implementation of mandatory standards and norms in Poland for the EU energy efficiency requirements in terms of RES use in buildings is estimated. Currently functioning national mechanisms of financial support for investment and retrofit projects which implement the energy systems based on RES are characterized. There is also analyzed the national energy balance methodology for the energy demand in buildings. The algorithms for calculating the indicators of energy efficiency in buildings with energy systems powered by RES are evaluated. These algorithms are used to plan and perform thermo-modernizing audits for buildings. There are also characterized adapted to national conditions tools to support a techno-economic analysis of RES use in buildings. At the end of the work, the energy performance, energy efficiency evaluation and the effect of the greenhouse gases emission reduction are presented on examples of buildings equipped with energy systems based on RES.

The main aim of this paper was to determine the efficiency and appropriateness of the support schemes used for the support of renewable energy sources in Poland and Slovakia. The results showed that the suitability of using a particular instrument depends on the conditions in the country. Based on the results, the most appropriate instrument within Poland is a factor that brings together the level of energy consumer taxation and tradeable certificates. Grants were also a suitable instrument in this country, while subsidies did not have a significant effect. In the case of Slovakia, the only significant (appropriate) instrument was the factor capturing the level of electricity taxation and the level of tariffs provided to market operators.

Opis:
The reduction of natural resources and the ever increasing demand for energy forces research on new energy sources. In the case of obtaining energy from non-renewable sources of energy, natural resources are used as fuel in the combustion process. This way relatively high calorific value is achieved but it is associated with the number of fundamental flaws. Among other things, this may include destruction of the environment in the vicinity of extraction of conventional fuels’ sources, emission of large amounts of harmful substances during the combustion of conventional fuels causing the pollution of natural environment and there is a danger of life or health loss for people working in the extraction of fossil fuels. The use of renewable energy sources is related to interesting investment opportunities in the energy field and there are no problems mentioned above. For these reasons, it is worthwhile to conduct research on improving investment efficiency by using new, renewable sources. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is showing the opportunities of improving efficiency of electric power investment by using renewable energy sources. This article presents a comprehensive overview of renewable technologies used to produce electricity. Then, the attention was focused on assessing the financial efficiency of wind turbines. The considerations were illustrated with the examples of calculation of financial ratios NPV and IRR for a hypothetical investment in the production of electric power using the wind farm. The calculations and analysis conducted can provide interesting basis for further research on improving electric power investment efficiency by using renewable energy sources and new comprehensive evaluation methods of such investments. Comprehensive evaluation methods should take into consideration multifaceted nature of the projects.

The ethicality of building wind farms, especially near homes, has long been questioned. There are people who consider building turbines near households unethical due to their negative impact on the environment. The noise and vibrations associated with the operation of wind turbines are seen so negatively that one should consider whether it is socially irresponsible to put wind farms near buildings. The article presents both a description of the basic types of wind turbines as well as their impact on the natural environment and human environment. Information on the development of electricity obtained from wind as well as the total share of electricity obtained from renewable sources in total primary energy in Poland was also presented. The need to educate the public about the responsibility of actions for the benefit of the environment and sustainable development is also indicated. The aim of the article is to try to answer the question: do wind power plants bring more benefits to people and the environment around them, or just the opposite? And also, is it ethical to build turbines in close proximity to households?

W artykule dokonano przeglądu regulacji unijnych i krajowych w obszarze energii, w kontekście wydarzeń od ogłoszenia Zielonego Ładu do początku 2023 r.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 resulted in the need for the redefinition of energy security and sovereignty of the European Union as a whole and for each member. The use of energy resources as a weapon means that energy cannot be treated as a commodity subject only, but becomes an attribute of the sovereignty of the EU. The article reviews European and national regulations in the field of energy, in the context of the events from the announcement of the green deal (December 2019) to the beginning of 2023. The energy sovereignty of the EU and its members was analyzed and the attempt to answer the question of whether and under what conditions the EU, as well as its individual members, can be energy sovereign.

Solar collectors are commonly used in domestic hot water (DHW) systems in different types of buildings. In this paper we conducted the analysis for a single family house located in two countries: Poland (Warsaw) and Spain (Madrid). Various factors like national rules, climatic conditions, investment costs or fuel and electricity prices were taken into consideration. We took into account flat-plate and vacuum pipe collectors to select the best solution. The results show that the use of solar collectors in Poland and Spain is economically justified. Moreover we analyzed heat loses and annual operating costs of the heating installation for both buildings and they were found to be at a similar level, due to high fuel prices in Spain.

Opis:
Renewable energy sources (RES) have significant potential to contribute to the economic, social and environmental energy sustainability of small islands. They improve access to energy for most of the population, they also reduce emissions of local and global pollutants and they may create local socioeconomic development opportunities. A majority of the communities around the world rely heavily on oil, natural gas and coal for their energy needs. These fuels draw on lots of resources that will eventually diminish, which in turn makes them too expensive or too environmentally damaging to recover. This review article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energies; therefore based on the benefits of these energy resources, the use of renewable energies, instead of, fossil fuels will be a good solution for the control of the environmental, social and economical problems of our communities.

The aim of this paper is to analyse how legal and political conditions in Poland and Germany affect the competitiveness of renewable energy (RES) production. The analysis also includes the most important competitive source of energy in both countries, namely coal. An attempt to assess the influence of governments on the RES sector by influencing carbon-based energy was also made. The framework of this analysis is expanded diamond of M. E. Porter's competitive advantage of nations, although its scope was limited to the governmental factor and its influence on the other components of the model. The analysis shows great importance of legal and political conditions for the competitiveness of RES in both countries, including enormous impact of hidden support for coal, and indicates disadvantages of the methods of RES subsidising.

Subject and purpose of work: This study analyses employment in the renewable energy sector. The aim of this research was to explore the impact of obtaining energy from renewable sources on the labor market in Poland. Materials and methods: This study is based on secondary data from the Central Statistical Office, Eurostat, and EurObserv’ER. During the literature review, research papers on the labor market, published in Poland and internationally, were examined. The analyzed data was processed using an Excel 2007 spreadsheet. The number of people employed in relation to 1,000 toe of primary energy obtained in individual RES industries was the measure of the impact of the RES sector on employment. The results of the present research were presented using descriptive, graphical and tabular methods. Results: In Poland, the use of renewable energy sources between 2010 and 2020 doubled, from6,892 ktoe to 12,518 ktoe, and is projected to further double by 2030 compared to 2020.It is generally agreed that obtaining energy from renewable sources has a significant positive impact on the labor market. In the period of analysis, the number of individuals employed in the RES sector increased from 36.8 thousand to 110.8 thousand. The highest labor intensity was reported for the RES sectors of solar power, heat pumps, and liquid biofuels. Conclusions: If the renewable energy sector continues to develop as projected, the demand for employees in this industry will more than double by 2030.

Reduction of CO2 emissions in Poland (excluding transport) should be related to a change in the structure of electricity production sources. Similar actions have been taken by many European countries. In 2017, in the European Union’s power industry, the largest emitters were dominated by coal-fired power plants in Germany (seven power plants). However, the leader of this ranking turned out to be the Belchatów power plant owned by the Polish Energy Group (PGE). Renewable energy is energy obtained from natural processes. It should be obtained in a way that would not cause a deficit of natural resources (renewed in a short time) to have a limited impact on the environment. The purpose of promoting and using renewable energy sources (RES) is to reduce the harmful effects of energy on the natural environment, primarily by limiting greenhouse gas emissions (water vapour, CO2, CH4, CFC, N2O, halon, ozone and industrial gases HFC, PFC, SF6). Biomass is the most widely used renewable energy source currently used. The study of the literature and comparison of the set parameters for different types of biomass in the given order shows that Virginia mallow has the highest usefulness for energy purposes. Considering the fact that both cashew and coconut (shells) cannot be grown due to the climate prevailing in Poland, Virginia mallow seems to be the best alternative for traditional fuels used in the energy sector in the analysed group. Virginia mallow has competitive properties to wood biomass and hard coal only significantly supercedes in terms of calorific value. The energy properties of Virginia mallow can additionally be improved as a result of the torrefaction process. In addition, in the literature on the subject, attention is paid to the fact that mallow may be grown on less-favoured soils and the process of its collection – in contrast to other such plants – does not require the use of specialized agricultural machinery.

After an analysis of certain legal texts, the authors have established that under Polish law the President of the Energy Regulatory Offi ce may conduct 56 diff erent types of auctions for generators of the electric energy from renewable sources (RSE). For each individual RSE installation complying with the RES parameters a separate auction may be carried. One RSE installation may take part in several RSE auctions provided it satisfi es the parameters of each individual installation. These parameters concern both the premises connected with the start-up process (the commencement of the production of electric energy) of a given installation and the premises of technical nature such as carbon dioxide emission or the level of the installation capacity used, as well as premises of a subjective character regarding individual producers participating in the auction. A detailed analysis of all types of RSE auctions described in the Act of 20 February 2015 on renewable sources of energy allows to determine which types of installation may take part in individual actions. However, of key importance from the point of view of the possibility of a RSE auction to be carried are secondary regulations which allow the Council of Ministers to determine individual types of RSE auctions in which the volume of energy, subject of the auction, will be made available. Consequently the Council of Ministers which runs the State policy within the area of RSE has become essentially responsible not only for the possibility of conducting an RSE auction, but also for the implementation of the EU climate and energy policy which is also binding upon Poland.

However, it is important to note that electricity generation from r enewable sources, mainly wind and photovoltaic, is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions, and is thus unreliable. As a consequence, the development of stable energy sources is required in order to guarantee energy security. Promising solutions include energy storage technologies. The power-to-gas systems may be deployed as adjuncts to wind parks or photovoltaic generation. The energy generated at the time of maximum sunshine or wind is accumulated and used at the moment of high electricity demand. The purpose of this article is to propose a location for the development of the Power-to-gas technology in Poland aiming to store energy derived from renewable energy sources.

Economic development largely drives the demand for energy, and therefore over the next several years is expected to be a significant increase in its consumption. Most forecasts that after 2020 there shall be a reduction of the share of conventional fuels: coal, oil and natural gas, associated with depletion of natural resources, and thus the increase in the price of energy from these sources. Their place will deal with renewable energy sources. In Poland, the most important of renewable agricultural biomass and forest, which can be used for energy purposes in direct combustion processes (eg wood, straw, sewage sludge), converted into liquid fuels (such as esters of rapeseed oil, alcohol) or gas (such as agricultural biogas, biogas from sewage treatment plants, landfill gas).

The depletion of the conventional energy sources, as well as the degradation and pollution of the environment by the exploitation of fossil fuels caused the development of renewable energy sources (RES), including biomass. In Poland, biomass is the most popular renewable energy source, which is closely related to the obligations associated with the membership in the EU. Biomass is the oldest renewable energy source, and its potential, diversity and polymorphism place it over other sources. Besides, the improvement in its parameters, including an increase in its calorific value, resulted in increasing use of biomass as energy source. In the electric power industry biomass is applied in the process of co-combustion with coal. This process may contribute, inter alia, to the reduction in the emissions of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur oxides. The article presents the characteristics of the biomass burned in power boilers of one of the largest Polish power plants, located in Opole Province (Southern Poland). Besides, the impact of biomass on the installation of co-combustion, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the co-combustion process not only in technological, but also environmental, economic and social aspects were described.

Recreational houses (WH) of a recreational nature may constitute an offer for the development of non-standard forms of recreation proposed by the domestic tourist industry. The paper presents some selected design problems of heating an exemplary WH house. For central heating (central heating) and domestic hot water (domestic hot water), it is proposed to use a compressor heat pump. It works with the central heating installation (water underfloor heating) and hot water, and with a lower source in the form of surface water in the lake. The heat exchanger for the brine is immersed in the lake water. The methodology for calculating the dimensions of the lower heat exchanger was presented. It was proposed that it will be made in the form of two coils made of polyethylene pipes and WH float sides placed on both sides. The design solution presented in the paper meets the conditions for qualifying as using renewable energy sources (RES). It should be noted that covering the demand for electricity for the WH house, including to drive the heat pump motor and for other living purposes in a residential superstructure, is also made using a hybrid system in the form of cooperation between wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. Problems regarding the WH hybrid electricity supply system will be the subject of a separate study.

The development of societies building modern economies and production was and is associated with the continuous growth of energy consumption. Nowadays the world was forced to take a different look at the problem of energy consumption and fossil fuels. Because of cost of mining and production, unstable political situation in resource-rich countries and ecological perspective, many scientists seeks renewable energy sources, in quantity sufficient to meet the demand. Because of development of technologies obtaining many types of renewable energy sources that can be adapted to the needs of energy and the environment in which it will be received. Because of rich resources of ingredients that make production possible biogas, it is the most appropriate renewable fuel for agricultural infrastructure. The paper comprehensively describes factors influencing the development of renewable energy to their nature and technology in the application of renewable fuel gas with particular reference to methane gas and biomethane. There is general agreement on the Reed for sustainable biofuel industry, there is little understanding on how to avoid social and environmental degradation with global biofuel production. Results showed a variety of government policies, the most significant of which concerns agricultural production. In analyses the impact of government's policies on promotion of affordable, alternative energy sources capable of maintaining current energy consumption standards.

Along with the Poland accession to the European Union, the strict environmental protection standards have been introduced. It forces the farmers to change the existing methods of heat energy obtainment from traditional materials into environmental friendly ones. One of the many methods that Poland has applied in order to gain the "green" energy is planting of energy crops such as Salix viminalis willow. This plant is widely considered to be the most useful for biomass production. Willow is a common species in our country, however, not long ago it has not been regarded as a renewable energy source. Only in the past decade, an interest in this matter has grown significantly. This paper presents the analysis of the plantation establishment costs, its further exploitation and comparison of the profits from biomass sale which reflects the planting profitability. It has been stated that the highest incomes can be obtained from biomass sale and its replacement of the traditional energy resources. The most efficient willow planting occurs on the moist soils with the possibly high bonitation class.

This paper presents examples of technologies for distributed energy generation developed at the The Szewalski Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk. These are combined heat and power (CHP) units (generating heat and electricity) for houses with a power from several to tens of kW and for municipalities in the form of the Municipal Energy Centres (with a capacity of several hundred kW up to several MW). A unique project, specializing in ‘energy-plus’ technologies for individual houses and other buildings, which aims to build a Research Centre of PAS in Jabłonna is also presented. These are key technologies for energy sector with respect to distributed generation. Additionally, the article discusses the conditions and opportunities for the development of civil energy generation in our country. Civic energy generation is a great vision in which the citizen becomes an entity and do not subject to the energy market, and additionally has its virtual advisor in the form of smart grid and data processing technologies in a ‘digital cloud’.

Opis:
Aim/purpose – The article aims to show the housing situation, satisfaction with housing conditions and place of residence, and the use of renewable energy sources in urban households of Polish seniors. Design/methodology/approach – Direct research in the form of a survey questionnaire was carried out on a sample of 2537 households in 2014-2015 in ten Polish cities of various populations and sizes. In accordance with the research assumptions, the sample included persons over 65 years of age who took independent purchasing decisions in the market. In order to select the sample, the selective quota sampling procedure was used. The survey was conducted among participants of the University of the Third Age at state universities in: Warsaw, Kraków, Łódź, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Lublin, Białystok, Toruń and Wrocław, as well as among members of parochial clubs in parishes located in the Archdioceses of Warsaw, Kraków, Łódź, Białystok, Gdańsk, Katowice, Lublin, Poznań, Wrocław and the Dioceses of Warsaw-Praga and Toruń. Findings – The survey reveals that more than half of seniors’ households are satisfied with both the place of residence and housing conditions. The use of RES in seniors’ households looks slightly worse. Only 1.5% of all the surveyed households of persons aged 65+ invest in alternative energy sources to produce electricity and heat. Financial problems are the key barrier to the development of RES-related projects in their households. Research implications/limitations – Given the limited financial capacities, the study of housing conditions and the use of RES among people aged 65+ was confined solely to seniors’ households in the largest Polish cities. In those households, a relatively low share of RES often results from inadequate technical conditions for the connection of RES installations. Rural households generate slightly more electricity and heat from RES. Originality/value/contribution – This is one of the first studies published in Poland that attempt to provide some insight on RES used in urban households of people aged 65+.
