Opis:
How pluralism becomes hierarchical? Debating pluralism in contemporary PolandThis article discusses the multifaceted nature of religious pluralism. More specifically, it seeks to answer the question why, while advancing the claims of equality and diversity, the idea of pluralism reproduces inequalities and naturalizes hierarchies. In order to illuminate this problem, the article first presents a theoretical discussion and then refers it to the ethnographic evidence from a yearlong fieldwork in a multireligious locality in southeast Poland. It analyzes the impact of the discourse on “multiculturalism” on minorities’ plights and it exposes the processes in which religion, reconfigured as “culture” or “tradition,” is used as a discriminatory tool. By combining an exploration of a concrete ethnographic setting with an investigation of the broader implications of locally observed phenomena, it demonstrates the importance of anthropological perspective in the study of pluralism, or rather: the importance of a thorough dialogue between theory and ethnography. Dlaczego pluralizm hierarchizuje?

In the article the question of religious pluralism is presented. The author gives the characteristics of this concept, which has changed its meaning over the recent years. The author brings into light some contemporary ways of perception of the religious pluralism and controversies they result in. The concept of inclusive pluralism by Jacques Dupuis has been recommended by the author as a model of religious pluralism which enables the opening of religious education on the inter-religious dimension. A proper understanding of religious pluralism plays an important role in forming an open religious identity which is one of the key tasks in education including early education.

Opis:
The XX century, in the Western countries, offered a profusion of conceptions, frequently similar in the tension they generate, but almost never exempt from strong ideological premises, and most of all inconclusive and discordant in their practical applications. The beginning of the new Millennium, almost as a reaction, has developed an utopia of a new, so called, postmodern humanism. These conceptions are not antireligious, but rather postsecular. They represent a considerable challenge to the Christian Churches’ educational tradition, that in turn are convinced to possess (as a monopoly?) the universality of the symbolic goods. It is a challenge on the ground of values and ultimate goals (problem of the ethical and religious pluralism, freedom of religion and belief, new paradigm of the relationship science-faith), but also a challenge on the field of educational procedures and institutional frameworks (conflict between public and private, relevance of the media pervasiveness, primacy of the instrumental knowhow over the humanistic one, the cultural generational gap, etc…). Among the conditions to confront this educational challenge in a correct manner, the article strongly suggests, in order to handle the new complexity of the reality, to adopt a strategy of graduality, to reinstate at the centre of one’s thought and life the formation of an ethic of responsibility.

This paper aims to prepare an individual to function effectively in a constantly changing multi-faith, multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-everything society with minimum conflicts. Pluralism is a new subject with a focus on its effect on different aspects of life in building cohesive societies where no one has to live in apprehension or fear of the other. Pluralism means respecting the otherness of others in religion, culture, politics, and the workplace. You may see people of different faiths, races, cultures, and ethnicities interacting, working, studying, intermingling, playing, and marrying each other. A decade from now, you may not see the monopoly of a race or cultural groups in the workplace, place of worship, school, bus, train, theater, library, or other public gatherings. These interactions between people not familiar with each other’s culture lend themselves to misunderstandings and are bound to create conflicts. As responsible members of society, we must prepare ourselves to prevent possible challenges and lay a foundation for the effective functioning of institutions where every human feels secure about his faith, race, ethnicity, culture, language, political or sexual orientation, or any other uniqueness. Exclusive communities will become a thing of the past. If you live amidst others, you should also respect the otherness of others, as you expect them to do the same for you.

ABSTRACT RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The aim of the paper is to redefine “confessionality” in religious education in Austrian schools, regarding to changing circumstances. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODOLOGY: The paper describes the history of confessional religious education in Austria, which gets several problems in different school-situations. In some schools, there are 8 and more sorts of confessional religious education. After the description of possible alternatives, a proposal of redefining confessional education is presented. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The paper starts with an overview of the history and the actual situation of religious education in Austrian schools. Currently 13 recognised religions and denominations in Austria provide religious education. In some situations religious education becomes impossible due to insufficient student numbers. So the state and religious communities will have to try and establish new models of teaching. The main part of the paper consists of pros and cons in the conceptual considerations of confessionality. RESEARCH RESULTS: It is a challenge to rethink confessional religious education: religious communities will have to take joint responsibility and provide religious education as a service to students with clear denominational features. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: There are three first steps very necessary in the next future: Commitment of the religious communities to religious education; a new concept to try at several locations; practical support concerning multi-religious events.

This essay aims at discussing the problem of Felix Mendelssohn’s attitude towards different religions shown in his choral piece Responsorium et Hymnus Op. 121 for male choir with cello and double bass. Considering the arguments concerning composer’s self-identity provided by Jeffrey Sposato, we could interpret the Lutheran chorale appearing at the end of this Catholic liturgical work as means by which Mendelssohn tried to manifest his Lutheran faith and therefore to criticize Catholicism. However, if we examine more carefully the very end of this composition, we would find that the musical material, characteristic for each faith, form a dialectical and dynamic relation. It seems that—instead of criticizing Catholicism—Felix showed the possibility and the necessity of different faiths to coexist, which, according to the idea of religious pluralism and tolerance proposed by composer’s grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, is the only way to discover religious truth. At the end of this paper, I would like to propose that the reception history of Felix Mendelssohn’s work and life from the post-Wagnerian and anti-semitic criticism to so-called Mendelssohn Renaissance in the second half of 20th century also went through a dialectic course. We cannot fully understand and interpret them without taking a multi-aspect view.

Opis:
Cultural and religious pluralism has become a fact in the West. Actually, old European states have hosted not only “native people” but also the “others.” With time those “other” people – representatives of different cultures and religions – were becoming “natives” in a sense. The experience of pluralism in public life involves getting to know one another, which leads to the elimination of prejudices.Christians and those who used to be Christians live side by side with various non-Christian cultures and traditions. Over the ages, non-Christian cultures and religions occupied specific geographic territories with strictly defined boundaries. At present, they are distributed across all continents. Religions are an integral part of non-Christian cultures. Each of them is characterised by an original doctrine, unique cult, morality and organisation with a particular authority at the helm. Followers of various religions and specific ideologies live in the same environments, i.e. multicultural milieux. The phenomenon of “otherness” is part and parcel of human history, civilisation and culture. Descriptions of anthropogenesis, offered by various religious traditions, already identify what is “other” and what forms a more or less coherent whole. Human beings would not be their real selves if no “others” were around them. We are who we are thanks to “others.”The 20th century was a time of a raging hatred of the “other”, generated by utopian systems glorifying some people while annihilating others. Utopias, philosophical fictions and mythologies of the 20th century were the quintessence of the aberrations of human thought. The second half of that century saw the gradual recovery from the effects of wars that are always a culmination of violence, cruelty and ruthlessness. The path of integration can be found by discovering forgotten brotherhood, reinterpreting the past and overcoming the prejudices and grudges resulting from the bad past, affirming the identity of one’s own and others, and tolerance. Dialogue, in its various forms and manifestations, is a means to overcome strangeness and establish community ties.Since ancient times, the Bible has been the book of dialogue and “integration” between ancient cultures, and between human beings and God. Jesus Christ is a model for dialogue and integration as vividly illustrated by the Gospel. Jesus never rejected anyone and He was never indifferent to “other” people. He was always open to dialogue even if it was very difficult. Jesus Christ appears very clearly as the one who integrates human beings with themselves, with other human beings as well as small communities such as the family and large communities such as nations and the Church. He is a model of community integration in its various references and manifestations.

In a globalized reality, Christian churches must rediscover its place. The task is extremely difficult as it’s impossible to know where the congregation’s spiritual needs are heading. Migration and mass media rise as well as problematic identities and roles influence the deepening of the differentiation process, which makes it difficult to define unambiguous scenarios regarding the future of the religious market. On the other hand, the prolificacy of the presented theories proves religion’s unusually complex nature and context. The article’s aim was to present the most significant forecasts on where Christian churches will stand in the today’s global village.

Both main processes presented in the paper may become a broad research inspiration for sociologists of religion. In this article I claim that there is a hidden assumption of the demonic character of God in the exclusivist and inclusivist theism. Exclusivism and inclusivism assume that God is partial and in fact does not care about most people in the world, choosing to reveal himself fully only in one part of the world. This kind of neglect for other people reflects the standard ethnocentrism and seems to be an expression of it. The only way to avoid the view that God is demonic is to accept the religious pluralism. The idea of religion would need to be changed: from the idea of religion as a place of revelation of God to the idea of religion as a place for searching for God. Accepting religious pluralism would lead, however, to the destruction of religions as we know them, since the core of their doctrines is based on the assumption of their superiority.

The article discusses the role of negative theology in contemporary interpretations of religious pluralism in an analytical and synthetic way. One of such interpretations is the pluralistic theology of religion. In view of the problems encountered due to such a way of looking at religions, a different direction of interpretation is proposed in the article. Accepting the validity of the basic intention of negative theology, the author presents a thesis that a Christian theology of religious pluralism can be based on Trinitarian theology as a kind of “matrix” of religious experience. A systematic criterion was used in the elaboration of the subsequent steps: (1) The faces of transcendence, (2) The pluralist hypothesis, (3) Via negativa, (4) The limits of negation, (5) Experience and language, (6) The nature of transcendence, (7) Toward a Trinitarian interpretation of religious pluralism. The presented model of Trinitarian interpretation of religious pluralism can be called an integrative model. It is based on the assumption that it is possible to demonstrate certain similarities between the properties of the individual Persons of the Trinity and various ideas and concepts of Ultimate Reality found in different religions.

The European Union has no fully developed mechanism of collective memory, unlike national states. The Union has its history now, but this history is not common to all of the member states, and as such cannot be treated as the foundation for European identity. This article aims to demonstrate the relationship between the cultural identity of the European Union and religious pluralism. Broadly understood, religion is the foundation of culture. It shapes the world view, and it explains the cause and way the world was created. It also interprets human fate, being the source of values for a believer, the observance of which constitutes a guarantee of what happens at death. Cultural changes involve religious ones, although their direction is not clear. Neither is it obvious what the distinction between cause and effect is. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly interesting to note that certain foundations of the European culture and its specific features are associated with Christianity, or more broadly, with the Judeo-Christian tradition. The unity of Europe is a unity of pluralistic European culture. Democratic principles, human rights and Christian values present in multicultural Europe may be a solid point of reference when building a European identity.
