Regional integration
Opis:
The author of this paper has aimed at featuring regionalisation processes on the African continent in the context of transformations taking place at the threshold of the 21st century throughout the world. Globalisation, virtualisation and trans-national processes have sparked-off national and international transformations and induced state-dominated systems. As a result of the concurrent regionalisation processes and the development of cohesive border regions, the existing state frontiers now serve as bridges rather than barriers. The emergence of a new economic geographic set up has positioned the present national states in between the space marked territorially by borders and that of the world market. The author analyses regionalisation processes in Africa in the African and European perspective as well as from the regional and global viewpoint. He dwells on the circumstantial conditions and premises determining these processes. He also attempts to answer whether the development of effective integration structures in Africa depends solely and exclusively on the inhabitants of this continent alone.

Opis:
Southeast Asian economies have already gone a long way of development. Firstly, they have survived a period of economic miracle, which de facto was not a miracle, but based on good macroeconomic policy and strong foundations, such as high interest rate and macroeconomic stability. Secondly, the economies have experienced deep crisis, which has proven that good policies are not sufficient condition for development. Apart of them economy needs good, mature institutions and management. Reforming those institutions as well as political reforms is especially important, if countries open politically as well as their economies. Reforms with parallel process of transforming countries towards democracy, and sometimes still decentralization is a great challenge for them. Thirdly, dynamic development of the Chinese and Indian economies has constrained other countries and those being members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as well, to certain adjustments. ASEAN countries represent different development levels, what significantly determines their future aims and policies as well as their advances in the world and region’s society. The article answers three important questions connected with further development of the ASEAN countries: 1. Are the ASEAN countries able to avoid internal disintegration while growing intolerance for deepening disparities in the societies of individual countries, increase in pollution and corruption? 2. Are the ASEAN countries going to profit on the success of China and India, or, maybe opposite, is it going to be additional competitive struggle in international markets? 3. Will the regional integration help in raising the economic effectiveness, or is it to cause external shocks in individual economies?

Regional market integration is crucial in increasing development for emerging economies. However, research has shown that, in the case of developing countries, the process of market integration faces various obstacles. This study aims to analyse the key determinants of successful market integration for developing countries, as well as to investigate under what conditions some countries may benefit more (or less) than others from market integration, particularly in the SADC region. Based on the existing literature on the main debates and theories on regional market integration of developing countries, this study has used the method of process-tracing to investigate the causal relationship between governance and institutions, market integration and development. The analysis based on this study has found that good and sound policies aimed at increasing domestic capabilities deriving from both public and private governance and institutions is vital in determining relative market integration success. The results indicate that the discrepancies found among SADC Member States hinder the process of regional market integration. On this basis, it is recommended that the linkages between the SADC Member States be strengthened through increased levels of coordination and integration.

Differentiated integration is often considered ‘integration gone wrong’ and not a normal and permanent feature of the ever larger and more heterogeneous European Union. With the growing impact of the widening, deepening and politicization dynamics, the Union has been conceptualized as a ‘system of differentiated integration’. At the same time, concerns over ‘disintegration’ are mounting. In this light it seems crucial to refl ect on the relationship between differentiation and disintegration: does the former lead to the latter? Should we prevent further differentiation, or promote it as means of making the EU more successful? On one hand, European integration theories provide few adequate answers on the mechanisms and conditions for disintegration. On the other hand, analysis of other regional organizations puts the European dilemma into perspective, and it seems that the existence of various forms of differentiation does not prevent successful cooperation.

It is estimated that the informal sector represents around 43% of the official GDP in Africa - so it is almost the same as the formal sector. The problematic of the informality raises directly very important questions - how to judge the informality, as an example of "social capital" in motion, effectively helping millions to survive or predatory activity, based on policy discrepancies, undermining the possibility of sustainable development. As a last sheet-anchor or poison for the African economies? In the article I will try to answer the question of how the informal cross-border trade can be judged from the point of view of its influence on the official regional integration in Africa - that "spaghetti bowl" continent, full of regional institutions and agreements, where informal cross-border trade can be, according to some estimated, sometimes even more important than the formal regional trade. I will begin with a synthetic presentation of the regional integration problematic and informal economy in general and in Africa in particular. I will try then to come through the pros and the cons of informal cross-border trade in terms of regional integration to the reflections, encouraging to redefinition of the basic concepts of the article - informality and regional integration. Showing that they are not necessarily what the common sense approach would suggest.

The surge of diversified forms of regionalism and regional integration within the past few decades has stimulated the reappraisal of the conceptual tools traditionally designed to bench-mark and monitor region-building processes across the world. More recently, the Brexit negotiations have become a reminder that the EU remains an unfolding experience. This article argues that the study of African regionalisms constitutes a timely invitation to revisit the experience of the EU and its contribution to the world of regionalisms. After a brief survey of the classic definition of the region, we will discuss the ongoing relevance of European integration and the implications of the analytical distinction between regionalism, regionalisation and regional integration, before drawing from the study of Africa five threads which set the basis for a comparative study of regions and regionalisms beyond the classic emphasis on the EU or the world of regions.

The United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Belgium, Italy and Spain have lost their dependent territories, in the place which were formed 50 sovereign States. The new formed States began the process of shaping own national identity and places in international relations. The EU’s normativity in regional integration was opposed by Russia’s hard power approach. Although the potential benefits of the integration drove Armenia, Georgia and Moldova to sign a framework agreement with the EU, the latter’s inability to pro-vide security guarantees has reduced the EU’s attractiveness leaving the future of the Eastern Partnership uncertain.

The present article illustrates the use of integrated indices to evaluate the potential for the development of regional integration processes. The study examines a new research and methodological approach, which involves the use of an integral index of the potential for the development of integration processes, proposed with regard to the intensity of the influence of internal and external factors on integrative relations development. The application of the above-mentioned integrated index in a comparative analysis of the potential for the development of integration processes allows a comprehensive and quantitative description of the current regional integration processes taking place in the modern economy under certain regional models.

Opis:
Integration trends can be observed in all groups of countries, although these may arise due to various reasons. In developing countries, it is primarily the desire to speed up the process of economic development. Integration processes accompanying the elimination of trade barriers was to facilitate the realization of this goal through intensive development of trade. Unfortunately, despite attempts to cross-regional co-operation in developing countries, the creation of free trade areas or common market ended in many cases fail. Determined by both structural factors and political. Hence, regional integration in developing countries has not brought the expected results. Not all countries have benefited equally as other's major mutual trade. At the same time, the most vulnerable are countries in Africa where the barrier to integration is primarily a low level of development. This article aims to analyze the integration processes which previously took place in these countries and the impact of this integration. This article attempts to answer the question of whether regional integration among developing countries has led to the development of their trade?

The article is focused on reviewing the performance of left-wing governments that dominated Latin America at the beginning of the 21st century. The purpose is to identify and analyse significant shortcomings and challenges faced by pink tide governments in relation to social progress, economic development and regional integration. Drawing from previous studies and reports on social progress, development, political economy, and regionalism, I argue that the left fell short of its promise to tackle inequality sustainably and comprehensively. Moreover, the pink tide failed to ensure stable economic growth due to over-reliance on natural-resource exports and was not successful in strengthening regional cooperation. Nowadays, six major Latin American economies are run by the left, which some perceive as a resurgence of the pink tide. Based on the analysis of the experiences and factors that contributed to the political decline of the original pink tide, the article provides key lessons for the new generation of Latin American left-wing governments. By using an explanatory and comparative research method, I examine the social, economic and political context of the region with the purpose of juxtaposing the two waves, highlighting present challenges faced by regional actors, and offering recommendations for the contemporary Latin American decision-makers.

Baltic integration studies, though dispersed and involving researchers of various disciplines, generally fit well in the field of economic geography research. This article attempts to review the study results of research conducted in Poland in the last four decades. It identifies eleven leading issues, including: the Baltic wide cooperation (conditions and factors, progress and collaboration perspectives), the development of the maritime economy, international legislation, environmental protection, spatial planning and cross-border cooperation. The research focus evolved reflecting the major milestones in geopolitical transformations. In Baltic Europe we can identify three evolutionary phases: identification of cooperation paths and conditions in the competitive environment of two political and military blocks, a recast of options in the period of political transformation and European integration, studies of EU enlargement consequences.

Recently V4 has shown some coherence in case of migrant wave to the EU, as well as presented unified position vis-à-vis climate change or leaders election in the EU. The Author has taken into consideration major political parties – both ruling and in the opposition – and their programs in all V4 countries and comes to following conclusions: 1. There is no coherence of V4, as Czech Republic and Slovakia are not ready to follow the footsteps of Hungary and Poland in creation of so called illiberal democracies. 2. All V4 countries are domestically highly polarized, with the exception of Hungary dominated by its charismatic leader Viktor Orbán. 3. Internal instability cannot bring a cohesive and unifi ed voice of V4 in the EU in more coordinated way. 4. If V4 countries will constantly undermine the core system of values, or Copenhagen criteria, of the EU, as Hungary and Poland is doing, combined with more and more problems with corruption, as all of them have, then un-famous East – West division line can reemerge in the EU and on the European continent leading to weakening of it on the global scene.
