The article is devoted to the novel Crusaders (1935) by the Polish novelist Zofia Kossak (1889–1968). It discusses the author’s hypothesis about the Polish participation in the First Crusade (1096–1099). The article focuses on the possible interpretation of the novel in the spirit of the philosophy of Polish Messianism. The accession to the Crusade forces by the Silesian warriors can be considered as an act of redemption for the sins of the whole Polish nation as well as a pilgrimage to Poland being regarded as visiting the Promised Land. The psychological aspects of the first (according to the novel) participation of Polish armed forc-es in an international military expedition are also considered in terms of tribal solidarity, consolidating the role of Christianity and pagan traditions that had a significant impact on Poles at the end of the eleventh century.

Blessed John Paul II in his homilies preached in 1991 to his compatriots in the new socio-political circumstances emphasised that man is still “maturing to freedom”. The human being is created with the free will but his or her freedom needs redemption. The Risen One revealed the immensity of love which the Creator has for his creatures. It is perfected in the act of redemption. The Incarnate Son of God came to restore the fatherhood of God for people as well as the sonship of people in relation to God as the Father. The teaching and the deeds of Christ confirm the superiority of the human over the law. The life of Jesus Christ is characterised by a unique freedom. Jesus knowingly entrusted his earthly lot to the Father. The freedom of Christ has its source in His unity with the Father in the Spirit. Christ is the rock on which the edifice of truth about the world created by God and about the redeemed man stands. “He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1 Cor 1: 30). The awareness of the redemption is based on the conviction that man cannot justify himself or herself but he or she needs God’s justification. Christ is the only Righteous and this is through his obedience that “many will be made righteous” (Rom 5: 19).

Purpose of the article is to present the problem of instruments of entitlement and their meaning in the Polish civil law. The subject in question mainly raises the issue of the appropriate application of regulations concerning the redemption of instruments of entitlement, to which provisions regarding share redemption are applied. The author discusses the standpoint of jurisprudence, attempts to analyze current voice of doctrine representatives, as well as presents the most important arguments of the judicature.

The purpose of this article entitled “The snow and the war in The Snow was dirty by Georges Simenon and Warna or the weight of the snow by Paul Willems” is to show how the snow is playing a structuring role in the two studied works: first, due to its ambivalent properties, it makes the plot switch, secondly, it lets overcome the reality of the war in order to explore general questions as fate, purity and redemption.
Cet article vise à montrer comment la neige joue un rôle structurant dans les deux oeuvres étudieés : d'abord, du fait de ses propriétés ambivalentes, elle fait basculer l'intrigue ; ensuite, elle permet de dépasser la réalité de la guerre dans la mesure où elle mène à des questions plus générales comme la pureté et la mémoire, le destin et la redemption.

This study is devoted to the biblical background of the article of faith „He Descended into Hell”, which is the least known and the least understood by modern Christians. The truth about the descensus of the Son of Man is deeply rooted in the religious thought of Israel, which is shown by inspired and non-canonical texts. According to the views of the ancient, the death and the abyss constituted the necessary elements of the human existence. Christ, surrendering to the law of death, descended into Sheol after His death. In the underworld, being sinless, He conquered evil and its maker. He brought the good news to the dead, who had been waiting for the Messiah for centuries. The Work of Redemption by the Son of God is universal.

Drawing on recent scholarship on transcultural memory and its role in peacebuilding, this paper explores the implications of entangling memories that belong to different pasts, places, and cultural groups in Joseph O’Connor’s Redemption Falls (2007) and Colum McCann’s TransAtlantic (2013). Both novels, written by authors interested in the notions of oppression and suppression of stories, are polyphonic texts that disrupt any single linear narrative by interweaving multiple storylines through constant movements across time and space. McCann’s focus shifts from the aftermath of WWI to the 1998 Belfast Agreement, while O’Connor’s novel deals with the American Civil War and Irish nationalism; both recount episodes of the Great Famine, the ensuing emigration, and the history of Abolitionism. Hence, painful memories of the Irish mingle with the mnemonic repertoires of those who suffered the abominations of slavery or internecine conflict in an attempt to give voice to the marginalised and highlight bonds between (apparently unrelated) groups of people. Moreover, this convergence of inherited memories binds the past with the present and the future, as the recollections have echoes of contemporary conflicts and global phenomena involving Ireland, whose role in them is implicitly interrogated. By fusing significant cultural memories across generations and spaces, these novels assert the ‘historical duty’ to remember to promote negotiation and mutual understanding between different cultural groups today. This paper, therefore, will first offer an overview of contemporary Irish fiction, characterised by an original world-facing, rather than nation-focused, outlook. Second, it will undertake the analysis of the selected novels to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the potential of literature to build sound knowledge of diverse human experiences and, as a consequence, promote peace.

The purpose of the present study is to demonstrate how each man could rise from a suffering circumstance, discovering in it an opportunity for inner conquest. This is the strong human potential as Homo Patiens. In this way it is possible to assert the opposite thesis concerning a deterministic view of human being. The main solution the paper offers in any given set of pain experience is Christian faith as the only way to discover the hidden meaning of suffering. The essay develops a Christian analysis about human pain and it takes in consideration, most of all, the reflections of Edith Stein and the Holy Pope st. John Paul II in view of deepening the saving philosophy proposed by the Mystery of the Cross.

The history of Christianity is full of various hardships which are experienced by Christians living in the world: from misunderstanding and dislike, slanders and insults, to martyrdom of blood. An interesting answer to the question “How should a Christian live in a community which is largely non-Christian?” can be found in the First Epistle of Peter. This article strives to depict the importance of Christ’s example, presented in 1 Pe 2:22-24, who patiently endured his suffering, in forming Christ's disciples to live their faith maturely. The hymn sets a demanding, but also a hopeful example to imitate for first-century Christians from Anatolia , as well as for present-day ones.

This article compares the interior paintings in the ‘Ades and Ohel Moshe synagogues, both of which are non-Ashkenazi, in the Naḥlaot neighborhood in Jerusalem. Although the synagogues were decorated 50 years apart, there are similarities in the painted motifs and drawing schemes, but also some differences. I suggest that these differences reflect the development of a Jewish concept of national redemption during the 50 years that elapsed between the adornment of the two synagogues.

The article presents the issue of the conjunction of prayer and love, which constitutes the essence of prayer. Attention is drawn to the fact that the reflexive human nature is in demand for prayer, which was reflected in the culture of antiquity. The author of the article Christ as the face of the Father’s mercy. A top-down and theophanic conception of God’s Mercy draws the most fundamental approach to the mystery of mercy as a form of the inner revelation of the Triune God's life from the ample Polish literature devoted to the issue of God’s Mercy, and analyzes it. Also practicing mercy, according to this conception, may be done in the right way if its features are recognized in Jesus Christ the Incarnated Son’s deeds. The author calls this perspective of theology of mercy “a top-down conception”, as humanity is not able to comprehend the essence of mercy without the aid of the supernatural world that, on the one hand, shows what God is like in His essence, and on the other, how one should follow God to be saved. God's self-revelation in the salutary events becomes – according to the author – the best interpretation key of God's theology of mercy, showing His Trinitarian character.

The article shall discuss the question of the origin of evil, limitations and contingency of creatures and moral evil. Then, it discusses the topic of evil spirit, who is a liar, and a man’s wants to plunge into solitude. Finally, in the Person of the Son of God, a triumph over the liar, lies, and all evil is shown. The successive stages of this victory are the Resurrection, Ascension and joyfully awaited by Christ’s friends the Last Judgment. God in the created world, of which He is Lord and Master, permits physical and moral evil. A mystery of evil God explains us through his Son. Jesus Christ vanquishes evil, sin and Satan by his death and resurrection. The Creator would not permit an evil if he would not derive some good from that evil. This good we shall fully know only in eternal life and then we can understand the way of God’s Providence.

“Dostoevsky’s novels are pure philosophy,” declared Luigi Pareyson (1918–1991), an Italian existentialist. He presents a Christian Dostoevsky capable of overcoming the nihilistic onslaught of a post-Christian culture, both in its harshest and “weaker” and postmodern versions. Nietzsche finds a good antagonist in Dostoevsky, who, being earlier in time, will be able to overcome Nihilism. Before being a Christian, the Russian novelist had already descended into hell out of nowhere, in his exile in Siberia. He survived this ordeal − which inevitably led him to nowhere − and paradoxically found Jesus Christ. That is why his novels and his ideas can offer a shelter at this turn of the millennium?
„Powieści Dostojewskiego są czystą filozofią” – twierdził włoski egzystencjalista Luigi Pareyson (1918–1991), przedstawiając chrześcijanina Dostojewskiego jako zdolnego do przezwyciężenia nihilistycznego natarcia na postchrześcijańską kulturę, zarówno w jego najostrzejszej, jak i „słabszej” postmodernistycznej wersji. Nietzsche również znajduje w Dostojewskim – chronologicznie wcześniejszym – odpowiednią osobę do przezwyciężenia nihilizmu. Rosyjski powieściopisarz, zanim stał się chrześcijaninem, zstąpił znikąd do piekła, na zesłanie na Syberii, by przeżyć mękę, która nieuchronnie miała prowadzić donikąd, a doprowadziła do odnalezienia Jezusa Chrystusa. Ten paradoks sprawia, że w jego powieściach i ideach możemy odnaleźć schronienie na przełomie tysiącleci.

Dzieło zbawienia człowieka przez Jezusa Chrystusa osiągnęło swój szczyt w Jego męce, śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu, lecz rozpoczęło się już w momencie przyjęcia natury ludzkiej przez Syna Bożego. Świadczy o tym Pismo Święte i Tradycja, które uczą, że głównym celem działania zbawczego jest uwolnienie człowieka od grzechu i przywrócenie mu pełni życia. Ponieważ destrukcyjna moc grzechu objawia się przede wszystkim jako: 1) zerwanie relacji z Bogiem, 2) śmierć, 3) utrata sensu życia, dlatego tych trzech konkretnych konsekwencji grzechu dotyczy zbawcze działanie Boga w akcie wcielenia. Zbawienie posiada podwójny aspekt: jest obdarowaniem dobrem (aspekt pozytywny) przy jednoczesnym uwolnieniu od zła (aspekt negatywny). W konsekwencji wcielenie Syna Bożego jest: 1) obdarowaniem obecnością i uwolnieniem od samotności, 2) obdarowaniem życiem i uwolnieniem od śmierci; 3) obdarowaniem nadzieją i uwolnieniem od bezsensu. Odpowiednim momentem do głoszenia tej prawdy jest uroczystość Bożego Narodzenia, która winna być szczególną okazją do pogłębienia refleksji nad misterium uwalniającego spotkania człowieka z Bogiem w nowo narodzonym Emmanuelu.
Although the work of salvation of man by Jesus Christ reached its climax in His passion, death and resurrection, it began on the reception of human nature by the Son of God. It is witnessed in the Holy Scripture and Tradition which teach that the main objective of the salvific action is to liberate the man from sin and restore him to the fullness of life. Since the destructive power of sin reveals itself in: 1) breaking off the relationships with God, 2) death, 3) a loss of the meaning of life. These three specific consequences of sin relates to the salvific action of God in the act of the Incarnation. Salvation has got a dual aspect: it is bestowing the good (the positive aspect) and liberating from the evil (the negative aspect). As a result, the Incarnation of the Son of God includes: 1) offering one’s presence and liberating from loneliness, 2) offering life and liberating from death, 3) offering hope and liberating from meaninglessness. Christmas is the right moment to spread this truth. This celebration ought to be a special occasion to reflect deeply upon the mystery of the liberating meeting of man with God in the newly-born Emmanuel.

In this article, the author outlines the basic features characterizing the understanding of the human being in the thought of Hans Urs von Balthasar, according to which we attain our true human fullness only by accepting the grace of redemption that Christ has gain for us. The imitation of Christ, which is the primordial task of all the redeemed, is, in its essence a acceptance and fulfillment of the missionary vocation received from God. Accepting this mission and living it allows us to reach our full human potential, i.e. to bring about and assimilate our deepest identity as a human being. A further consequence of this process is self-actualization, and ultimately personal holiness. An important context for this process is contemplative prayer.
W niniejszym artykule autor nakreśla podstawowe cechy charakteryzujące rozumienie człowieka w myśli Hansa Ursa von Balthasara, według którego człowiek dochodzi do osiągnięcia prawdziwej pełni swego człowieczeństwa jedynie poprzez przyjęcie łaski odkupienia wysłużonej mu przez Chrystusa. Naśladowanie Chrystusa, które jest pierwotnym zadaniem człowieka odkupionego, jest w swej istocie przyjęciem i wypełnieniem otrzymanej od Boga Ojca życiowej misji. Przyjęcie tej misji i życie nią pozwala człowiekowi dotrzeć do pełni prawdy o sobie, tj. zrozumienia oraz przyswojenia swojej najgłębszej tożsamości jako bytu. Dalszą konsekwencją tego procesu jest dla człowieka jego spełnienie, a w końcu także osobista świętość. Ważnym kontekstem tego procesu jest modlitwa kontemplacyjna.
