V článku sa autorka venuje prekladateľskej činnosti Jozefa Marušiaka a jej recepcii na Slo‑ vensku. Prezentuje výber jeho prekladov z poľštiny do slovenčiny, ktoré najviac prispeli k for‑ movaniu obrazu poľskej literatúry na Slovensku. Autorka poukazuje na konkrétne prekladateľské postupy a stratégie, a tiež na kultúrny a literárny dialóg, ku ktorému jednotlivé preklady viedli. Článok zároveň prestavuje prierez Marušiakovou prekladovou tvorbou od jej začiatku až po súčasnosť. Snaží sa tak vystihnúť, akým spôsobom výber diel a preklady jednej osobnosti vedú k obohateniu prijímajúcej literatúry.
The paper deals with Jozef Marušiak’s translations and their reception in Slovakia. The author presents a selection of his translations from Polish into the Slovak language, which has mostly formed the picture of Polish literature in Slovakia. The author points out some specific translation strategies, as well as the cultural and literary dialogue, which the translations have led to. The article also maps the wide range of Marušiak’s translation works from the beginning up to the present. The aim of the paper is to capture how the choices and translations of one personality can enrich the receiving literature.

Opis:
This article summarizes and discusses the body of translations from Croatian literature published in Poland in 2018. The most significant offering to appear on the Polish market that year was a multilingual collection of mid-career poetry by Dorta Jagić entitled The Portrait of The Body, containing Croatian originals and their translations into Polish (by M. Wierzbicka) and English (by D. Šodan, M. Đurđević). “Synoptic” editions (bilingual or multilingual) allow the reader to view both the original and its translation, which has three major benefits: it contributes to a better circulation of texts; enables deziluzionist reading (the awareness of the difference between the original and the translation); and establishes an intertextual bond between the collected texts.
Članak sumira stanje prijevoda iz hrvatske književnosti koji su objavljeni u Poljskoj 2018. godine. Najvažnijom se pozicijom na poljskom izdavačkom tržištu pokazao višejezični izbor iz zrele poezije Dorte Jagić pod naslovom Portret tijela koji sadrži hrvatski original i njegov prijevod na poljski (M. Wierzbicka) i engleski (D. Šodan, M. Đurđević) jezik. Sinoptička izdanja (dvo- ili višejezična) omogućuju čitatelju da se sukobi s originalom i prijevodom, pridonose boljoj cirkulaciji tekstova, omogućuju deziluzionističko čitanje (tj. sa sviješću o razlici između originala i prijevoda) te uspostave intertekstualnu vezu između povezanih tekstova.

The paper focuses on the issue of retranslation perceived as a significant aspect of contemporary practice of literary translation into Ukrainian, exemplified by the cases of the retranslation of short stories by Bruno Schulz and Tadeusz Konwicki’s Minor Apocalypse. The emergence of new translations within a short time encourages questions about the ambitions that drove translators and publishers to present new translations of the previously translated literary works, as well as about the strategies used by translators.
Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu ponownego tłumaczenia będącego ważnym elementem współczesnej praktyki tłumaczenia literackiego na język ukraiński na przykładzie nowych przekładów opowiadań Brunona Schulza i Małej Apo¬kalipsy Tadeusza Konwickiego. Pojawienie się nowych przekładów po upływie względnie krótkiego czasu prowokuje pytania o motywy pobudzające tłumaczy i wydawców do publikacji nowych przekładów wcześniej tłumaczonych dzieł, a także o stosowane przez tłumaczy strategie.

The author addresses the problem of translation series, demonstrating that the rich tradition of creating and researching such series focused mainly on structural and model analyses, and usually isolated translations from other reception phenomena related to a foreign text in a national culture. By shifting the attention from translation-only studies to research in a wider scope of reception of a foreign text, such as intertextual relations of originals/translations with national literature/ culture, comments, and the work performed around a foreign text and its translation (e.g. convention of an editing series, anthology editing, canon creation), the author proposes to introduce three complementary notions: translation series, textualisation series, reception series. The author also discusses the proposals on specific examples derived from the Polish reception of Walt Whitman’s poetry.

The author of the article – Yi Lijun, a distinguished translator of Polish literary works into Chinese – attempts to present the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in China, con-centrating on the issues concerning translations. In 1930 Sibilla Aleramo translated the play Dom kobiet by Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska into Italian. This three-act drama, probably the first play with only female characters in the history of theatre, was set in Warsaw the same year and was suddenly a huge success in Poland. Aleramo’s translation has remained unpublished and has been preserved (as a manuscript and a typescript draft) in the author’s archive belonging to the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The paper focuses on the history of this text, based mainly on the analysis of Nałkowska’s diary and unpublished letters and documents from Aleramo’s archive.

The article discusses the Polish translations of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s “Nutcracker”. In the first part the origins of the famous story are presented. Then the author presents the problem of “translation series” as a phenomenon revealing translators’ approaches and various interpretations of the same literary work. The two main chapters of the article are devoted to eight different Polish translations of “Nutcracker”. Their detailed analysis leads to an evaluation of translators’ strategies of domestication and exotization and their influence on the Polish language reception. In the last part the author presents her own translation and points out important aspects of the original work treated in her version of “Nutcracker” as translation invariants.

This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

The article discusses the research proposal presented in Światowa historia literatury polskiej. Interpretacje [World History of Polish Literature. Interpretations], edited by Magdalena Popiel, Tomasz Bilczewski and Stanley Bill. The article analyses strategies utilised by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska, a translator of the novel Dopo il divorzio by Grazia Deledda, to introduce Deledda’s works on the polish literary market. The text shows ways in which characteristics of Deledda’s works and Kościałkowska’s translation strategies serve to minimise the effect of foreignness and to present Deledda’s works as important argument in the polemics between the literary tradition and the modernity. In consequence, the Polish translation of Dopo il divorzio may be viewed as an act of an influence on a Polish literary system.

The author analyses the reasons for the popularity of the most often translated and read Polish authors on the Chinese publishing market, with particular interest in Czesław Miłosz, Olga Tokarczuk and Andrzej Sapkowski. She also presents the translators – both experienced and often recognised and awarded doyens of Polish studies in China, and those from the intermediate and youngest generations to whom the oldest ones passed the knowledge, skills, passion and the sense of common mission of building cross-cultural dialogue through literature.

Настоящая статья посвящена исследовнию перевода стихотворения Самуила Маршака Мороженое. Автор, анализируя перевод как процесс, ставит вопрос, является ли он своего рода продуманным действием расчётов – отнимания, прибавления отдельных элементов содержания, их тождественности или равенства по сравнению с подлинником. Он пытается также найти ответ на вопрос, как переводить для детей. Всегда ли переводчик, отнимая существенные элементы в тексте, добавляя новые по отношению к оригиналу, ставит читателя перед новыми картинами? Автор статьи спорит с некоторыми переводческими решениями и предлагает свой вариант, по его мнению, более адекватный подлиннику по смыслу и по форме. Стремление к смысловому и формальному равенству не означает попытки буквального перевода, но такой подбор средств, чтобы предоставить читателю возможность восприятия текста, похожего на подлинник. Каждый элемент поэтического рассказа имеет свой локус в таком представлении. Перестановка локусов, удаление некоторых из них и добавление новых оказывает воздействие на читателя. «Математические расчёты», парадоксально, не всегда влияют на восприятие текста.
Słowo o przekładzie… (wiersza dla dzieci Lody Samuiła Marszaka) Niniejszy artykuł został poświęcony analizie przekładu wiersza Samuiła Marszaka Мороженое (Lody). Autorka, zastanawiając się nad czynnością przekładu, zadaje na wstępie pytanie, czy działanie owo nie jest pewnym przemyślanym systemem obliczeń – odejmowania, dodawania pewnych treści, ich tożsamości czy równości w porównaniu do oryginału. Próbuje też znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie, jak tłumaczyć dla dzieci. Czy rzeczywiście odejmowanie istotnych treści w przekładzie, dodawanie nowych w stosunku do tekstu wyjściowego nie stawia czytelnika wobec poważnie zmodyfikowanych czy nawet zupełnie innych obrazów? Kwestionując sensowność niektórych rozwiązań translatorskich analizowanego przekładu, autorka proponuje swój kontrprzekład, szukając możliwości bliższego i, jej zdaniem, bardziej adekwatnego przekazu nie tylko treści, ale i formy tekstu wyjściowego. Co istotne, poszukiwanie równości wobec tekstu oryginału nie jest dążeniem do dosłowności, ale do stworzenia czytelnikowi, poprzez uważne i przemyślane rozwiązania, warunków do podobnej potencjalnej reakcji odbiorczej. Każdy element tekstu ma swój lokus w wyobraźni czytelnika. Zamiana ich miejsc, usuwanie, dodawanie może modyfikować odbiór. Jak się okazuje, „matematyczne działania” w tekście nie zawsze jednak zmieniają odbiór – paradoksalnie odjęcie czy dodanie może oznaczać tożsamość w odbiorze.
The aim of this article is to analyse the translation of Samuil Marshak’s poem Morozhenoye (“Ice-cream”). While reflecting upon the process of translation, the author poses the question whether the translator’s activity is not a certain conscious system of calculations – adding or subtracting pieces of data, their identity or equity in relation to the original. The author also tries to answer the question of how to translate literary works for children. Isn’t subtracting or adding vital pieces of content in the translation process actually putting the reader in front of largely modified or completely different images? While questioning the applicability of some of the translator’s solutions in the analysed text, the author proposes her own translation, which aims to reflect the original more closely and more adequately in terms of both content and form. More importantly, seeking equation with the original text is not an attempt to apply word-for-word equivalence, but rather aims at giving the reader the conditions to make a similar reaction to the text, via the translator’s conscious and considerate choices. Each piece of the text has its locus in the reader’s imagination. Replacing, deleting or adding them may modify the text’s reception. As it turns out, “mathematical calculations” in the text do not always result in a change in its reception – quite paradoxically, subtraction or addition may result in the most appropriate reception.

Since 1989 (the fall of Communism) the performing arts in Bulgaria have suffered a long process of transition dominated by a certain dialectic tension between the necessity to meet economic needs and the desire to open new venues for dramatic art. Against this background and contributing its own perceptive “reading” of Heart of Darkness to Conrad’s Bulgarian reception, on the eve of the vigorous celebration of his 160th anniversary in 2017, stage director Valeria Valcheva’s theatrical adaptation represents a remarkable debut rendition of Conrad’s fiction. The aim of this article is to explore how her idiosyncratic, creative, poetically recognizable approach lends a new form to Conrad’s recurrent relocation in modern and contemporary Bulgarian art.

The paper open with an outline of Roger Bacon’s linguistic interests. He claimed that the knowledge of languages is the propedeuctics of any knowledge because it is formulated in the Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic languages, and no translation can fully render the original text. There are also other reasons for which the knowledge of languages is necessary for the functioning of the Church, e.g. in the Liturgy or for missionary purposes. Bacon distinguished three stages of the command of a language, and the second is the skill of translation postulated for each person that studies philosophical and theological texts. This programme was too idealistic and, if only for the scarcity of original texts, it could not be carried out on a broader scale in medieval universities doomed to use Latin translations. And these translations were so negatively evaluated by Roger Bacon. He referred to his knowledge of some details that showed the translators’ incompetence. Then the paper discusses Bacon’s opinions on medieval translators. It indicates Bacon’s chronological mistakes and his lack of information with reference to many facts about the translator’s movements. It provides some possible reasons for Bacon’s ignorance and his harsh evaluation of that movement. There were the following reasons for that: he distanced himself from some learned information due to the fact that Aristotle had for many decades been condemned in Paris, there were excessive expectations in relation to the alleged astronomic and astrological knowledge of Aristotle, and its lack was painful for this scholar. He failed to be aware of the vagueness of Aristotle’s original text due to, among other things, only a rudimentary knowledge of Greek that Roger Bacon had, and Greek original texts were inaccessible. One may also mention a tendency typical of Bacon to trace causes of mistakes and his fear of being rush in creating authorities. Bacon’s testimony concerning William of Moerbeke is discussed in detail. This was done with a view to show that Bacon conveys some information that is not true and some that can be regarded as trustworthy or hypothetical in further research on the life and literary work of this medieval translator. The unique piece of information is that William of Moerbeke decided to revise the ancient translations of Aristotle’s writings. Bacon’s negative opinion about William’s translator’s skills must be treated as unjust, although contemporary research shows that, despite his indisputable accomplishments, William’s translations have some drawbacks. Accordingly, we cannot completely reject Roger Bacon’s testimony.

Julije Benešć’s correspondence with Polish scholars, people of culture, writers, and numerous acquaintances and friends began in his school years and lasted until his death. A large collection of letters and postcards sent to him by Poles has been collected in the HAZU library in Zagreb, but unfortunately it has not yet been put in order, and some items have been lost. The materials in the collection were only collected in the form of a list prepared by Ivan Meden in 1978. This text presents letters from Maria Kuncewiczowa, which provide information about the relations of Polish writers with the Croatian popularizer of their works and about the writer’s perception of the Polish literary scene in the years 1920s.

The article presents literary friendship between the poet and Karl Dedecius – the first and most important translator of his poetry into German. The article is an introduction into their voluminous correspondence. Letters that present Dedecius’ efforts aimed at anchoring Her-bert’s creativity into German language and rising in it related literature, reveal for us the figure of the poet and his half-emigrant condition. The article discusses Herbert’s poem Col-antonio – S. Gierolamo e il Leone, poem dedicated to his German translator. Saint Jerome presented in the poem is a patron and a symbol of perfection for translators. He is distin-guished not only through his titanic work, but above all through his attitude based on open-ness and courage.

This article recalls the circumstances of the first edition of the novel by Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago, in Polish translation, which appeared in 1959 in volume XLIV of the Biblioteka ‟Kultury” series, published by the Paris Literary Institute. Reconstruction of the history of this publishing initiative in the context of the political situation is possible thanks to historical sources preserved in the Paris and Warsaw archives, publications in periodicals, memoirs and epistolary culture. The circumstances in which the typescript was imported to Poland and in which the Literary Institute obtained a license for a Polish translation, the choice of translator, and Jerzy Giedroyc and Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s correspondence are discussed. An important source of information is the lively correspondence between Maria Dąbrowska and Jerzy Stempowski, the son of a publicist and social activist, and Mason Stanisław Stempowski, a longtime life partner of the writer. The fragments of epistolary culture discussed here allow a better understanding of these outstanding individuals of the twentieth century. The content of the correspondence analyzed also allows us to reconstruct many interesting facts from the field of translating Russian literature into Polish, as well as the complex situation of Polish-Russian relations in the post-war period.

In 1 Cor 15:54-55, Paul quotes Isa 25:8 and Hos 13:14. A significant distance between these citations and the corresponding MT and LXX has been often explained as Paul’s intervention. The present article discusses the Hebrew original and compares the citations from 1 Cor 15 with other ancient translations. The polyvalence of the original source, semantic shifts due to the target languages, and accretion of meaning in the transmission process explain Paul’s text without a need of charging him of pia fraus. In the end, we try to deduce from this case study some elements of Paul's hermeneutics.
