Opis:
The surface layers of low-carbon steel metal subjected to shot peening were studied. The velocity of Rayleigh surface waves of various frequencies in the range of 3-9 MHz by the phase-pulse method using contact piezoelectric transducers measured. The study of the distribution of residual mechanical stresses in depth was carried out using the etching of the surface layer of the metal and the use of a strain gauges. The characteristics of the roughness of the surface layer of the metal, which has arisen as a result of shot peening, have been determined. The effect of roughness and plastically deformed layer on the velocity of surface acoustic waves (SAW) is estimated by the method of layer-by-layer grinding of the surface layers of the metal. Based on the determination of the magnitude of the residual mechanical stresses and the known acoustoelastic coefficients, the magnitude of the change in the velocity of SAW under the action of these stresses is estimated.

Opis:
Parameters of surface acoustic waves (SAW) are very sensible to change of physical conditions of a propagation medium. In the classical theory formulation, the waves are guided along the boundary of semi-infinity solid state and free space. A real situation is more complex and a medium commonly consists of two physical components: a solid substrate and a gaseous or liquid environment. In the case of stress-free substrate, the strongest impact on SAW properties have surface electrical and mechanical conditions determined by solids or liquids adhering to the boundary. This impact is utilised for constructing sensors for different gases and vapours e.g. (Jakubik et al., 2007; Hejczyk et al., 2011; Jasek et al., 2012). The influence of gaseous environment on the SAW properties is usually very weak and ignored. However, in certain condition it can be significant enough to be applied to sensor construction. In general, it concerns Rayleigh wave devices where energy leakage phenomenon is perceptible, especially when the gas being detected considerably changes the density of environment. The paper presents the results of experiments with oxygen-nitrogen mixture. Their primary aim was focused on finding the dependence of resonant frequency and attenuation in SAW resonator on parameters and concentrations of the gas in the environment.

Opis:
The governing equations for a homogeneous and isotropic thermoelastic medium are formulated in the context of coupled thermoelasticity, Lord and Shulman theory of generalized thermoelasticity with one relaxation time, Green and Lindsay theory of generalized thermoelasticity with two relaxation times, Green and Nagdhi theory of thermoelasticity without energy dissipation and Chandrasekharaiah and Tzou theory of thermoelasticity. These governing equations are solved to obtain general surface wave solutions. The particular solutions in a halfspace are obtained with the help of appropriate radiation conditions. The two types of boundaries at athe surface of a half-space are considered namely, the stress free thermally insulated boundary and stress free isothermal boundary. The particular solutions obtained in a half-space satisfy the relevant boundary conditions at the free surface of the half-space and a frequency equation for the Rayleigh wave speed is obtained for both thermally insulated and isothermal cases. The non-dimensional Rayleigh wave speed is computed for aluminium metal to observe the effects of frequency, thermal relaxation time and different theories of thermoelasticity.

Opis:
The main objective of this paper is to present the usefulness of the seismic interferometry method to determine the S-wave velocity model of the rock mass affected by exploitation in the KGHM Rudna copper ore mine. The research aim was achieved on the basis of seismic data, acquired from seismograms, of 10 strong seismic events of magnitude greater than 2.6. They were recorded by a pair of seismometers deployed on mining terrain. In the first stage, the Rayleigh wave between seismometers was estimated. Then, the group velocity dispersion curves of fundamental and first higher modes were identified. Finally, inversion of the dispersion curves to a 1D S-wave velocity model up to 500m in depth was obtained. The velocity model was determined for the part of the rock mass partially affected by mining. The results confirm similar rock mass structure and velocities of the subsurface layers as those obtained by the archival 3D model. In both models, a high degree of correlation in the boundary location between the overburden of the Cenozoic formations and the bedrock of the Triassic formations was observed. The applied methodology can be used to estimate the S-wave velocity model in other mining regions characterized by strong seismicity.

Opis:
The behaviour of a water-saturated sand deposit subjected to dynamic loads induced by the propagation of Rayleigh surface waves is analysed. Cyclic shearing of the saturated sand matrix due to ground motions results in the development of excess pore pressures in the soil and its subsequent liquefaction. The phenomena of pore pressure generation and soil liquefaction are investigated within the framework of a compaction theory for saturated granular media. The results of calculations, carried out by a finite-element method, illustrate the evolution of pore pressures and the development of liquefaction zones in the soil, and show the variation of surface wave parameters with the progressive degradation of the strength of the subsoil.

Opis:
This paper is devoted to analysis of the surface nonlinear elastic harmonic waves of four types (Rayleigh and Stoneley harmonic waves within the framework of plane strain state; Love and Mozhaev harmonic wave within the framework of anti-plane strain state). The nonlinear model is based on introducing the Murnaghan elastic potential, which includes both geometrical and physical nonlinearities. Each type of surface waves is discussed in four steps: statement of the problem, nonlinear wave equations, approximate solution (first two approximations), so-me conclusions. A nonlinear analysis of waves required many novelties: new variants of the Murnaghan potential, new nonlinear wave equations and new nonlinear boundary conditions. The nonlinear wave equations were solved by the method of successive approximations. A new approach to analyze the boundary conditions is offered. Some new nonlinear wave effects are observed theoretically: a wave picture is reached by the 2nd harmonic and becomes changing in time of propagation, the wave numbers become depending on the initial amplitude.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to review the wide range of seismic interferometry applications. Despite the fact that only 10 years have passed since the first application was implemented in seismology, seismic interferometry is currently used in many issues beginning with analysis of the Earth´s deep interior and ending with the time-laps velocity changes at active landslides. The presented research results were published in leading scientific journals.
