Opis:
Cosmogenic radionuclides were measured in two specimens of the Sołtmany chondrite (L6) that fell on April 30, 2011. The first fragment (154.9 g) was measured 12 days after the fall and the second piece (120 g), 53 days after the fall. Both fragments were measured by means of non-destructive gamma ray spectroscopy. The first specimen was examined with an ultra-low background high purity germanium (HPGe) detector in a deep underground laboratory. A standard low-background HPGe detector was used to examine the second fragment in a ground level laboratory. Twelve cosmogenic nuclides were detected in the activity range of 0.030 m・Bq g–1 until 1.5 m・Bq g–1 Their activities place constraints on the exposure history of the meteorite and reflect the effect of solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays during the solar maximum. On the activities of expected radionuclides 60 Co (< 0.0075 m・Bq g–1) and 44 Ti (< 0.023 m・Bq g–1) only upper limits could be given. Sołtmany is part of a group of only 14 meteorites where 52 Mn (5.591 d half life) could be determined.

W wyniku trzęsienia, a następnie niszczycielskiego działania fali tsunami doszło do awarii w japońskiej elektrowni Fukushima I (Fukushima Dai-ichi), wyposażonej w 6 bloków z reaktorami BWR (Boiling Water Reactor).
A powerful earthquake of 9 degrees on the Richter scale struck off the eastern coast of Japan’s Honsiu island on Friday, 11th March 2011. It has been the third largest earthquake that struck the Earth since such phenomena started to be recorded. The epicentre of the earthquake was located approximately 130 km from the island. Its consequence was the formation of a giant tsunami wave of height exceeding 10 metres. The earthquake followed by the devastating activity of tsunami wave led in consequence to a breakdown at the Japanese Fukushima I (Fukushima Dai-ichi) nuclear power plant, consisting of 6 boiling water reactors (BWR). It was one of the worst breakdowns in the history of global nuclear power industry. It was rated at level 7 (on the seven-level INES scale), the same as the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986. The first air layers from above the Fukushima power plant were observed over Poland already on Wednesday (23rd March 2011). They contained small amounts of artificial radionuclides, mainly radioactive 131I, but also 134Cs and 137Cs.

The results of measurements of aerosol samples in the 1998-1999 period in the monitoring network of the ASS-500 stations in Poland are presented. The concentration of 137Cs remained at a rather low level during these two years. Higher levels resulting from the Algeciras release in southern Spain were identified in the first week of June 1998 at four stations situated in southern Poland. Higher concentrations of 137Cs were also observed during some other weeks of the presented period, but their origin has not been identified. The radionuclides of natural and antrophogenic origin were at their normal levels of activity. For comparison, the results from some other European stations are presented.

Opis:
A large amount of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the form of by-products or waste is produced annually by the growing activity of the oil and gas industry. Solid scale, sludge and produced water are typical residues contaminated with natural radionuclides from the uranium and thorium series, particularly 226Ra and 228Ra. The observed specific activities of these radionuclides are in the ranges up to 3700 kBq/kg and up to 168 kBq/kg for solid scale and sludge, respectively. The average activities of both radionuclides exceed the exemption level of 10,000 Bq/kg recommended by IAEA safety standards. This means that TENORM wastes from the oil industry may generate radiation exposure levels which require attention and continuous monitoring during some routine operations in this industry. This exposure is mostly caused by external gamma radiation coming from the 226Ra radionuclide and its progenies.

The data presented in this work are the result of systematic measurements of radionuclide concentrations in air, collected with an ASS-500 high volume air sampler of the ground air monitoring network supervised by the Central Laboratory of Radiological Protection. Sampling has been done since March 1991. Simultaneously, the routine complex meteorological observations were performed. In particular, the electrical properties of ground level atmospheric air were studied with measurements of electrical field intensity, positive and negative conductivity of air and density of vertical current. The airborne 7Be concentration changes similarly to the electrical conductivity of air, while other isotopes, antropogenic or originating from the ground are correlated with dust and other meteorological factors like watering and wind.

Opis:
The methods of decontamination of radionuclides from soils are considered. The literature focuses on fixing radionuclides in soils and creating geochemical barriers that it is prevent the spread of pollution. The main disadvantage of these methods is excluding the possibility of building a territory. It is needed to clean up the area to the sanitary and hygienic requirements for further use and then it is desirable to fix the residual activity. The conducted analysis of forms of radionuclides fixation in soils and mechanics of this fixation, therewith revealed that Cs-137 fixed more strongly on mineral components of soil, than Sr-90, which is mainly in the acid-soluble and exchangeable form, and, as a consequence, passes into the liquid phase during soil deactivation more easily. Contaminated soil deactivation in the urbanized territory is possible by washing it by ferric chloride solution at a concentration 0.02–0.05 M and with an equimolar addition of an ammonium chloride. Therewith, most efficient methods, which use in-situ conditions, are heap and convection leaching technologies with treatment degree, which is not less than 80%. At the same time, the most efficient methods which use in-situ conditions are heap and the convection leaching. The hardware-technological scheme of a convection leaching is presented. It is worth to note that ammonium salts additions slightly rise coefficient of treatment from Sr-90. Because ammonium salts are inexpensive, their additions allow to obtain significant economic benefits due to decreasing ferric chloride consumption, which is more valuable, and waste water volume reduction.

This paper presents vertical distribution of 137Cs, 226Ra and 239,240Pu in bottom sediments collected from the Southern Baltic Sea in the years 1998-2000. In the southern part of Baltic Sea the highest concentrations of 137Cs and 239,240Pu were observed at the Gulf of Gdansk. Deposition of 137Cs ranged from 1990š402 Bq m-2 in the Bornholm Basin to 3260š820 Bq m-2 in the Gulf of Gdansk. Depositions of 239,240Pu in the Bornholm Basin were 28.1-30.4 Bq m-2 and in Gulf of Gdansk 162-174 Bq m-2. The concentration peaks of long-lived radionuclides, owing to the sedimentation processes, show the maximum fallout period in different sediment layers. The observed differences in distribution of radiocaesium and plutonium along the profile confirm two main sources of contamination - Chernobyl fallout for 137Cs and global fallout in case of 239,240Pu. In chosen core samples from the Gdansk Basin vertical distribution of 210Pb concentrations were determined. Evaluated sedimentation rates based on decrease of unsupported 210Pb ranged in the Gdansk Basin from 1.9 to 2.3 mm year-1. Calculations based on 239,240Pu peaks show sedimentation rate, in the range from 1.6-2.2 mm year-1 for P110 region.

Opis:
The main goal of this work was to find correlation between the concentrations of radionuclides in outdoor air and the meteorological conditions like: air temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity and amount of precipitation. Because the sampling period of radionuclides concentrations in air was relatively long (7 days), the average levels of meteorological parameters have been calculated within the same time. Data of radionuclide concentrations and meteorological data have been analyzed in order to find statistical correlation. The regression analysis and one of the AI methods, known as neural network, were applied. In general, analysis of the gathered data does not show any strong correlation between the meteorological conditions and the concentrations of radionuclides in air. A slightly stronger correlation we found for radionuclides with relatively short half-lives. The only positive correlation has been found between the Be-7 concentration and air temperature (at the significance level á=0.05). In our opinion, the lack of correlation was caused by a too long sampling time in measurements of radionuclides in outdoor air (a whole week). Results of the analysis received by means of the artificial neuron network are better. We were able to find certain groups of meteorological conditions, related with the corresponding concentrations of particular radionuclides in air. Preliminary measurements of radon progeny concentration support the thesis that the link between changes of meteorological parameters and concentrations of radionuclides in ambient air must exist.

The results of the low-background gamma spectrometric measurements of protected mountain areas (Zacharovanyy Kray, Chorne Bahno, Ihthyological Preserve Rika and Uzhanskij National Natural Park) in the region of Primeval Beech Forests of the Transcarpathia, Ukraine, are presented. The distances between sampling points in a single protected area were in the range of 200–400 m in elevation of 300 m; probes were taken from the surface, from depth 20 cm and more than 50 cm. The proposed sampling scheme allows one to investigate the radionuclide concentration in protected area’s soils, their distribution on/near the mountain ridges and migration in depth (0–50 cm). We also investigate the infl uence the soils’ pH on the contents and the migration of nuclides. The obtained data allow us to study the statistical regularities between the sampling points along and down mountain ridges on the base of their radionuclide content. These results are important for evaluating the radon content/distribution and developing standards in the radionuclide content of the soil Carpathian region.

The article considers the results pertaining to the influence of solonetzic soils chemical amelioration on the presence and redistribution of heavy metals and radionuclides in meter profile of soils. Meliorative procedures were carried out 45 years ago. Phosphogypsum has been used as chemical ameliorant up to 90-s on the solonetzic soils of Tyumen region. It is a by-product of phosphates production. The objective aimed at revealing possible negative consequences connected with the introduction of the chemical elements associated with phosphogypsum. The studies showed that phosphogypsum introduction contributes to some increase in the content of active forms of heavy metals (zinc Zn, copper Cu, cadmium Cd and lead Pb) in soil. However, critical values are achieved only by active lead Pb. The evaluation of radioactive state of meadow crusted solonetzic soils after carrying out of meliorative procedures (for the same period) on the content of isotopes of thorium-232 (Th-232), calium-40 (K-40), radium-226 (Ra-226), caesium-137 (Cs-137) and strontium-90 (Sr-90) indicated that redistribution of radionuclides after chemical melioration does not cause a negative change of radiation background. Vibrations in the soil profile are connected with various initial concentration in rock formations or weathering detritus. Specific effective activity (Аeff ≤ 370 Bq/kg) testifies to the soils being studied and absence of their additional introduction with introduced doses of phosphogypsum.

Jamske Pleso lake is one of almost 200 lakes located in the Tatra Mountains. This post glacial water reservoir is set on a strictly protected area. In this work, sediment samples taken from Jamske Pleso Lake were analysed for radioactivity of natural 226Ra, 210Po, 210Pb and artificial 137Cs. The sediment core was taken by use of Limnos corer. After preparation of the physical sample, gamma measurements were executed in hermetically closed vessels. A preliminary study showed that concentration of natural radionuclides is in typical values for lakes located in this area. An elevated concentration of 226Ra (mean 57 ± 29 Bq ∙ kg–1) is an effect of uranium rich bedrock of the lake. Radioactivity of 137Cs is close to that reported in other Tatras lakes. Using 137Cs as an indicator allowed a preliminary estimate of the depth of the sediments deposited in 1960s.
Jamski Staw (słow. Jamské Pleso) to jeden spośród niemal 200 tatrzańskich stawów. XX wieku.

Many applications of probiotics have been described to date. In this paper, it is hypothesized that probiotic microorganisms can also be used to decrease the xenobiotics intake in humans. The use of probiotic bacteriae (e.g. strains of Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium sp.) and yeasts (Saccharomyces sp.) gives the opportunity for detoxification of various elements and compounds, considered as contaminants, directly in the lumen of human intestine. Some of these microorganisms are known to accumulate cesium, strontium and heavy metals to a great extent and also bind mycotoxins. Certainly, during the up-coming years, their native or genetically modified strains will be a part of treatment protocols in detoxification therapy. The utilization of probiotics, in the both therapy and nutrition of people living in the countries suffering from high food contamination, could result in the reduction of annual xenobiotic dose to be incorporated in their organisms.

Opis:
Obtaining specific information on contaminant biokinetics in marine biota is often necessary for properly interpreting monitoring data on trace contaminant levels in bioindicator species living under varying environmental conditions. Radiotracers have been employed in laboratory experiments to assess the uptake, distribution and retention of selected heavy metals and PCB congeners in three potential marine bioindicators occupying different ecological niches in the coastal zone. Pelagic and benthic jellyfish readily accumulated Co, Ag, Zn, Cd, 137Cs and 241Am from both water and food and retained them with biological half-lives (Tb1/2) ranging from a few days to several weeks. Zinc and silver were accumulated to the greatest degree (CF ~ 4 ´ 102), with benthic jellyfish having a greater affinity for metals than the pelagic species. Results from light–dark experiments indicate that the enhanced metal uptake in the benthic jellyfish is due to the presence of endosymbiotic photosynthetic zooxanthellae situated in the arms of organisms. Shore crabs ingesting Ag, a sewage-related contaminant, readily accumulated the metal with male crabs assimilating some 71% and female crabs 51% of the Ag from their food. Moreover, the assimilated fraction of Ag remained virtually immobile in their tissues as evidenced by an extremely long Tb1/2 for depuration of 7.3 years. Sea stars exposed to 14C-labelled PCB congener #153 in sea water accumulated the congener mainly in the body wall and podia reaching lipid weight CFs that ranged between approximately 2 x 10 5 to 4 x 10 5. In contrast, following exposure in radio-labelled sediments, the corresponding PCB transfer factors in the same tissues were much lower, viz., 3 x 10 2 to 5 x 10 2. Nevertheless, regardless of the exposure mode, CFs of PCB in the other tissues (digestive system, gonads, pyloric and rectal caeca) were consistently one to two orders of magnitude lower, an observation which suggests that sea star body wall and podia could serve as target tissues in biomonitoring studies assessing these toxic compounds.

Opis:
A simple procedure using α and γ spectrometry for the determination of natural radionuclides in two Polish geothermal water samples from Mszczonów and Cieplice, as well as in deep well groundwater from the city of Łódź, was described. The 222Rn radionuclide was directly extracted from 10 cm3 water samples to a scintillator solution placed in scintillation vials and determined by an liquid scintillation (LSC) technique with α/β separation. The activity concentrations of three radium nuclides: 228Ra(228Ac), 226Ra(222Rn), 224Ra, as well as 210Pb and 228Th were measured by γ spectrometry with an HPGe detector after their preconcentration on hydrated MnO2. 210Po was deposited on a silver disc from dissolved MnO2 precipitate after γ-spectrometry analysis and measured by α spectrometry. The concentration of 210Pb in the examined samples was below the detection limit of the method (< 6.2 mBq/dm3), whereas activity of its decay product 210Po was in the range 0.35–1.4 mBq/dm3. Higher activities of 228Ra (46.7 mBq/dm3), 226Ra (67.8 mBq/dm3) and 224Ra (22.4 mBq/dm3) were observed for the deep well water in Łódź in comparison to those for geothermal water samples from Cieplice and Mszczonów. However, concentrations of all the measured radionuclides were below World Health Organization (WHO) reference activities (0.1 Bq/dm3 for 228Ra and 1 Bq/dm3 for 226Ra and 226Ra).

Safety of radioactive waste repositories operation is associated with a multibarrier system designed and constructed to isolate and contain the waste from the biosphere. Each of radioactive waste repositories is equipped with system of barriers, which reduces the possibility of release of radionuclides from the storage site. Safety systems may differ from each other depending on the type of repository. They consist of the natural geological barrier provided by host rocks of the repository and its surroundings, and an engineered barrier system (EBS). The EBS may itself comprise a variety of sub-systems or components, such as waste forms, canisters, buffers, backfi lls, seals and plugs. The EBS plays a major role in providing the required disposal system performance. It is assumed that the metal canisters and system of barriers adequately isolate waste from the biosphere. The evaluation of the multibarrier system is carried out after detailed tests to determine its parameters, and after analysis including mathematical modeling of migration of contaminants. To provide an assurance of safety of radioactive waste repository multibarrier system, detailed long term safety assessments are developed. Usually they comprise modeling of EBS stability, corrosion rate and radionuclide migration in near fi eld in geosphere and biosphere. The principal goal of radionuclide migration modeling is assessment of the radionuclides release paths and rate from the repository, radionuclides concentration in geosphere in time and human exposure to ionizing radiation.

Fires in natural ecosystems have a detrimental effect on all biota components. In the global scale, many scientific studies of prominent scientists are devoted to this topic. It should be noted that scientists have always been interested in the influence of thermal destruction of soil genetic horizons on the specific activity of radionuclides. Most of these studies began after the Chernobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011) radiation disasters. The conducted research is focused on the specific activity of radionuclides due to the thermal effects of fires in natural ecosystems. It has been established that the edaphotopes affected by fires are naturally restored causing the restoration of soil formation processes. The specific activity of radionuclides decreases with the duration of the ground fire. Comparing the obtained data with the regulatory documentation, it was found that they do not exceed the minimum significant activity of radionuclides in the workplace. However, the increased activity of radionuclides in soils has a detrimental effect on the ecological condition and flora and fauna development. During the fire season in natural ecosystems and forests, careless handling of fire should be avoided and preventive measures should be taken to inform the public about the harmful effects of wildfire.

The article deals with the problems of induction of the anatomical and morphological structure of plants of different life forms under the conditions of a long-term chronic action of ionising radiation on the territory of the Northern nuclear power plant. Currently, the study and assessment of the radioecological situation on the territory of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, taking into account the ecological state of natural plant and animal populations, is of particular importance. The study of the reaction of living organisms, be it plants or animals, to different doses of chronic ionising radiation makes it possible to assess and diagnose the state of environmental quality, and these organisms themselves can serve as bioindicators of pollution. On the territory of the Semipalatinsk test site, at the experimental site “Balapan”, 3 sections with meadow type of soil were studied: polluted section no. 1 - the north-western shore of Lake Chagan, polluted section no. 2 - the north-eastern shore of Lake Chagan, and control section no. 3. For structural analysis, the study recorded the vegetative organs of plant species with an increased radiation background. It was found that when the EDR (exposure dose rate) of gamma radiation increases and the plant growth is stimulated. In the conditions of radioactive contamination, with an increase in the activity of alpha, beta and gamma radiation, plants response and changes occur in the internal structure of their vegetative organs. Such adaptive features arise under the influence of a complex of environmental factors, including radiation pollution.

In principle, there are two sources of environmental radionuclides, namely natural and man-made. In comparison with other environmental pollutants as, e.g., heavy metals, some scientific and technical disciplines profit by the natural radionuclides, using them for age determination of the samples, e.g., hydrology, geology and archaeology. Nevertheless, the environmental radionuclides represent mostly risk for a human health. Therefore, in this review, their sources are shortly described and original recent analyses of some bioaccumulation methods are presented, using either selected plant species or microorganisms, respectively. The different uptakes in all systems were measured to evaluate the possibility of application of the tested biological materials as markers of environmental contamination. It was also demonstrated that the detection methods developed for analyses of bioaccumulation of environmental radionuclides could be applied in radiotracer methodology for a study of bioaccumulation of heavy metals. While gamma spectrometry for soil samples and liquid scintillation spectrometry for water samples were used, autoradiography was applied to analyze the distribution of radionuclides during and/or after bioaccumulation.

The paper reports the adsorption of strontium(II) and americium(III) from aqueous solutions onto calcium alginate (CaA), barium alginate (BaA) and strontium alginate (SrA) beads. Adsorption process was studied in batch experiments as a function of the initial pH of the solution and the contact time. All sorbents were examined by the termogravimetric analysis (TG). Laboratory obtained spherical beads of CaA, BaA and SrA seem to be good metal sorbents from liquid radioactive wastes. A contact time of about 4 h and neutral pH of the initial aqueous solution have been proposed to be optimum conditions for Sr-85 and Am-241 removal from the contaminated solutions using alginate sorbents. Laboratory obtained beads of CaA, BaA and SrA are characterized by the decontamination factor (DF) equal to 85% for Sr(II) and 90% for Am(III).

The paper presents the results of determination of natural [polonium (210Po), uranium (234U, 235U, 238U)] and artificial radionuclides [iron (55Fe), nickel (63Ni), and plutonium (238Pu, 239+240Pu, 241Pu)] in Poland and the southern Baltic Sea ecosystem as well as the recognition of their accumulation process in the trophic chain. All presented results is a summary of long lasting studies realized by the present authors. Results of this study indicated that the principal sources of 55Fe and 63Ni in the Baltic Sea environment is the release from Swedish nuclear power plants. Investigation on the polonium 210Po and plutonium 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Pu concentration in Baltic and land biota revealed that these radionuclides are strongly accumulated by some species. Moreover, it was found that fish, mushrooms, cigarettes constitutes important sources of 210Po for people. The Baltic Sea algae, benthic animals and fish concentrate uranium only to a small degree. In Baltic sediments, the concentration of uranium increases with core depth and it is connected with the diffusion of 234U, 235U and 238U from sediments. The values of 234U/238U activity ratio in the sediments indicated that the reduction process of U(VI) to U(IV) and the removing of autogenic uranium from seawater to sediments in the Gdańsk Deep constitutes a small part only.

Fractionated drilling wastes originating from shale gas exploration in the Baltic Basin in Polish Pomerania were subjected to measurements of mean activity concentrations of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were used to understand the rock structure and texture. The activity concentration of radionuclides in bulk wastes and fractionated samples (latter obtained through a sieve analysis) was analyzed by using a gamma-ray spectrometer. After fractionation, three different size ranges were distinguished. Radiological indices were estimated by comparison with the levels recommended by the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and an equivalent absorbed dose was determined with respect to appropriated disposal of cuttings. The results showed that the drilling cuttings from the Ordovician period have a natural radioactivity level comparable to other rocks with the same lithology (potassium K-40 800-992 Bq/kg and thorium Th-232 23.3-30.8 Bq/kg) and they did not exceed acceptable levels of the total absorbed dose rate. The average absorbed dose rate in outdoor air one meter above the drilling cuttings was 54.1 nGy/h. The relation between particle size and natural radioactivity indicated that the concentration of radionuclides increased as the fractions size decreased.

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of thermal conversion temperature and plant material addition to sewage sludge on the PAHs content and the activity of selected γ-radionuclides in biochars, and to conduct an ecotoxicological assessment. The pyrolysis of the mixtures of sewage sludge and plant materials at 300°C and such temperature caused an increase in the contents of 2- and 3-ring hydrocarbons. During the pyrolysis of organic materials at 600°C, the amount of the following compounds was reduced in biochars: benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, indeno[1,2,3c,d]pyrene, dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene. Among γ-radioisotopes of the elements, natural radiogenic isotopes were dominant. 137Cs was the only artificial radioactive isotope. The pyrolysis of the mixtures of municipal sewage sludge and plant materials revealed that isotope  40K had the highest radioactive activity. In the case of other analysed nuclides, activities of  212Pb,  214Pb,  214Bi, and  137Cs were determined after the sample pyrolysis. The extracts from the mixtures of sewage sludge and plant materials were non-toxic to Vibrio fischeri.

Activities of the main radionuclides from the 238U and 232Th series in the Uniejów geothermal water were determined by combining liquid scintillation counting with a/b separation and g-spectrometry methods. The 222Rn and 226Ra activities were measured after extraction of radon from 10 ml water samples to 10 ml of an Ultima Gold F scintillation cocktail directly in 22 ml scintillation vials. The samples were counted in a new generation portable liquid scintillation counter, Betascout, without separation of the phases over the period of 30 days after extraction. The average values of the specific activities were equal to 2.95 and 0.64 Bq/dm3 for 222Rn and 226Ra, respectively. The 210Po radionuclide before counting was preconcentrated from 1 dm3 water samples on hydrated manganese oxide and deposited on silver discs. The discs were immersed in 10 ml of the scintillator and their activity was measured also by the same method. The average 210Po concentration was 0.052 Bq/dm3. Activity of the remaining radionuclides was determined by g-spectrometry after their preconcentration on hydrated manganese oxides from 10 dm3 samples. The activities of two radium radionuclides, 224Ra and 226Ra, can be calculated from their basic gamma-lines, whereas 228Ra can be determined from its decay product - 228Ac, and were equal to 0.40, 0.65 and 0.58 Bq/dm3, respectively. The activities of 210Pb and 238U (234Th) were below the detection limit of the method equal to 0.03 Bq/dm3. Based upon the obtained results, it can be concluded that there are not any radiological restrictions for using this water as a heat source or for balneological purposes. However, it cannot be used as drinking water, because the calculated committed effective dose from its one year consumption exceeds the WHO recommended value of 0.1 mSv.

Long-term results of ground-level air radionuclide contamination at the Russian coast of the Baltic Sea (nuclear facilities in the vicinity of the town of Sosnovy Bor) are under consideration. As compared with 1992-1997 [1], the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) equipment hermetic sealing (in 1998-1999) caused both the reduction of detection frequency of 131I aerosol and the maximum concentrations of 137Cs in the ground-level air at the NPP site. Long-term weekly nuclides' concentration time series were examined by the correlation analysis. Results of the analysis are presented. The seasonal fluctuations of 7Be concentrations in the ground-level air were examined by the harmonic (Fourier) analysis. The seasonal fluctuations of its concentrations with the maximum in spring-summer period are shown.

Opis:
In order to explain influence of common cations (K+, Na+ and Ca2+) on uptake and transport of caesium in macromycetes, a culture of a model mushroom species, king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) was set up. Fructification in a growing chamber with stabilised temperature (18°C) and humidity (80%) was preceded by mycelial colonization of the sterilized barley seed medium packed into autoclavable plastic containers. Aliquots of test solutions, containing 0.1 mM caesium chloride carrier traced with 137CsCl and the selected ions, were dosed into the interphase between the container wall and the spawn block. This allowed to study influence of the added ions on the uptake of caesium in a way unaffected by the used growing medium, e.g. soil, as it was in the previous studies. The experiments demonstrated that the major amount of radiocaesium was biologically bound and accumulated in the fruitbodies to a higher extent (56 69%) than in the mycelium. Addition of 10 mM Na+ decreased the transfer factor for caesium (cap/soil) while addition of Ca2+ caused an increase of this value. The effect of potassium addition depended on its concentration in the solution. Also the Cs/K ratio in caps was significantly influenced by addition of 10 and 100 mM Na+. However, the Cs/K ratio in stipes was affected by Ca2+. Discrimination factors, calculated from specific activities (137Cs/40K cap d.w.)/(137Cs/40K stipe d.w.), were also changed after addition of the studied cations. Since the activities of caesium measured in the fruitbodies of single fungal species strongly depend on the content of co-supplied ions, further proofs should be achieved before using mushrooms as bioindicators of the soil caesium contamination.

A simple model of Pleurotus eryngii mushroom culture, grown under stringent laboratory conditions, was developed to watch ecophysiological pathways of xenobiotics in saprophytic fungi. The investigated substances may be added in different stages of biological cycle of the fungus. It is emphasized that to obtain the fruitbodies, all the physiological needs of the species have to be fulfilled, i.e.: nutritional requirements, optimal temperature (according to the biological cycle), humidity, aeration (oxygen and CO2), absence or presence of the light in each reproduction phase, as well as the control of infections and plagues through all the production stages. The described model serves for investigation of radionuclide and heavy metal uptake and transfer in fungi. Double or some multiple fructification from the same substrate is possible giving a possibility to investigate bioremediation by mycoextraction.

Opis:
Nuclear reactions, which are very important from the point of view of human health, may occur during the production of the radiation sources, used in radiotherapy. The nuclear reaction data are needed in the radioisotope production procedure. The total cross section is also important in accelerator technology, in view of radiation protection and safety. In general, the significance of the cross section data for nuclear reactions in radionuclide production programs is firmly established. Gamma irradiation tracers can offer a large amount of information about the anatomy of different organs in the human body. The main purpose of this work was to compare the cross section of longer-shorter lived radionuclides. Theoretical excitation functions have been calculated with TALYS 1.6 nuclear reaction simulation code. The calculated results have been discussed and compared with the experimental data.

Opis:
Mineral fertilizers, commonly used in agriculture, contain natural radionuclides. Fertilizers are responsible both for external and internal exposure to human beings. They supply the soil and are consumed by plants, therefore, they pose one of the main source of radionuclides in the human diet. Moreover, due to the storage of large amount of fertilizers in warehouses they can be responsible for the external exposure. The gamma spectrometric measurements of radioactive isotopes content (potassium 40K, uranium 238U, thorium 232Th) and the measurements of gamma dose rate for over a dozen types of mineral fertilizers available in Poland, were performed. The measurements were conducted in fertilizer warehouses by means of portable gamma spectrometers with BGO detectors. The results were registered as potassium content K [%], equivalent uranium content eU [ppm], equivalent thorium content eTh [ppm] and absorbed dose rate DK, U, Th [nGy h–1] generated by radionuclides of uranium and thorium decay series as well as potassium 40K. Radium 226Ra, thorium 232Th and potassium 40K activities range between 16.2-973.4, 7.0-50.9 and 121.4-16777.9 Bq kg–1, respectively.

Mycelial construction of mushrooms is considered as a good biomass for heavy metals binding as well as lots of elements, including toxic and radioactive ones. Between various fungi known to bind heavy metals, mycelium of Pleurotus spp. can be used in Cd indication and accumulation, by means of fungal biomass. In this work possible role of Pleurotus ostreatus in accumulation of radionuclides is presented. This is important because this fungus is one of broadly cultivated mushrooms, and it can grow as saprobic organism on various substrates. Naturally occurring fruiting bodies of P. ostreatus were used in studies as a potential marker of atmospheric radioactive pollution. The samples of fruiting bodies in different age (young, mature and old) were collected in the center of Opole. Measurements of the gamma radionuclides activity concentration in dried samples were carried out by means of a gamma-spectrometer with a germanium detector HPGe (Canberra) of high resolution. Potassium concentration in fruiting bodies was similar in each sample, though it was the lowest in the young specimen. Activity concentration of Cs-137 was also related with the age of the mushroom. The biggest concentration was determined in old specimen, while in the young and mature ones it was similar. In the mature and old mushrooms activity concentration of Pb-210 was lower than minimum detectable activity. Pb-212 was determined only in fruiting bodies of old specimen

Opis:
Background. The development of effective environmental management programs requires an appropriate assessment of the current state of the environment and contributes to anticipating future changes in the state of the environment. Obtaining such information is one of the main objectives of monitoring the environment, which is subject to anthropogenic stress, including radiological contamination. The distribution of radionuclides and their ability to migrate in ecological chains and concentration in individual parts requires special control in contaminated areas. Objective. The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of radionuclides ( 137Cs and 90Sr) in soils near the settlements of the zone of radioactive contamination of the Volyn region and their spatial differentiation. Priority is given to agricultural lands, soils, crop products, which necessitates the organization of targeted monitoring of the agro industrial complex Material and methods. Radioactivity from 137Cs and 90Sr in the soil originating in the Volyn region was studied from 1996 to 2018. Radiation control was carried out on the area of 59852 ha (arable land - 38897 ha, meadows and pastures – 20955 ha). Results. A significant part of the study area has elevated levels of radioactive contamination. The density of radionuclide contamination of agricultural soils in the settlements of the region has been determined. Density of pollution of all surveyed agricultural lands 137Cs ranges from 0.01 to 2.826 Ci/km2, and 90Sr from 0.01 to 0.048 Ci/km2. Conclusions. The radiological situation in the Volyn region (Ukraine) remains stable. There are slight fluctuations of 137Cs and 90Sr, which is due to changes in weather conditions, which leads to an increase or decrease in groundwater and as a consequence - the migration of radionuclides. The most polluted were the soils of administrative districts of Manevychi and Liubeshiv.

Opis:
On the evening of September 14, 2011 at 21:00 GMT a bright bolide was observed by hundreds of eyewitnesses in the area north and west of the town of Kiffa, in the department of Assaba, in south Mauritania. A terminal fragmentation and sound phenomena were observed near the end point of the trajectory. At least one mass of 3.5 kg was observed to impact and recovered the morning after the fall near Boumdeid (or Bou Mdeid), around 60 km north of Kiffa. Subsequently a large number of eyewitness accounts were recorded and mapped by GPS. The present paper provides a scenario for the trajectory of the Boumdeid (2011) meteorite based on the available parameters and wind data at the relevant altitudes. In addition the paper presents the results of the mineralogical and chemical analysis of the recovered meteorite which is consistent with a classification as ordinary chondrite of type L6, shock stage S2, and a weathering grade of W0. Following its analysis and classification, the meteorite was published under the official name Boumdeid (2011) in Meteoritical Bulletin, no. 100, MAPS 49(8), (2014). Gamma ray spectroscopy was conducted 84 days after the fall and the detection of short-lived radionuclides such as 56Co and 46Sc confirmed the recency of the event. Derived from the data of 60Co, 54Mn and 22Na the approximate preatmospheric radius of the meteorite body was 10–20cm. The report is also intended to serve as a case example for post-event data recovery and trajectory reconstruction in areas not covered by sky-camera networks and with limited scientific infrastructure.

The paper presents the investigation on the estimated efficiency of iron (III) chloride solutions in the decontamination process of radioactive soils with 90Sr, according to kinetic and thermodynamic characteristics of the desorption process. The specific 90Sr radioactivity of soil samples was (3.9±0.3)·104 Bq·g. The adsorption isotherms of Sr2+ and Fe3+ are described with the Langmuir equation. The values of Gibbs energy G0298 = -4.65 kJ·mol-1 and equilibrium ion exchange constant Keq = 6,5 confirm the hypothesis of strontium removal from soils with iron (III) cations. The effectiveness of the method is substantiated by experimental and calculated results of this study samples of radioactive soils are deactivated in 90% after 9.5 hours, whereas the kinetic constant is 6.77·10 s-1. The suggested method of soil cleanup with 0.2 M Fe3+ solutions is optimal and complies with the environmental requirements.

Based on the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that occupants in the investigated areas would not get any unacceptable radiological hazards due to radionuclides in soil.

Opis:
The natural environment is exposed to pollution with chemical substances including radioactive elements. Certain class of elements has been in the earth’s crust since its formation and they have been up to this day. These elements form a group of natural radioactive isotopes which include 40K, 238U, 235U and 232Th. In addition to this type of radioactive elements the natural environment can be polluted with radioisotopes such as 137Cs, 134Cs, 90Sr, 239+240Pu or 241Am, which are released as a consequence of human activity. The main source of these elements are nuclear reactor incidents, processing and storing nuclear fuels as well as the use of nuclear methods in the industry and in medicine. The pollution due to human activity is one of the main hazards to the soil in Poland, because soil serves as a buffer which stores chemical substances both of natural origin and of anthropogenic origin. The data in the Annual Report from year 2011 prepared by the Centralne Laboratorium Ochrony Radiologicznej (CLOR, Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection) shows that the average concentration of 137Cs in the surface layer of soil in Poland is still elevated (over 1 kBq/m2) and equal 1,93 kBq/m2 thus requiring constant monitoring. That is why the paper describes the behavior of radionuclides of natural origin and of anthropogenic origin in the soil surrounding the Zakłady Azotowe Puławy (factory of nitrogen derivatives near Puławy, Poland). So far the soil in this area has been examined in terms of chemical pollution but not in terms of radiological pollution. In this article we present the results about the concentration of radionuclides of natural and anthropogenic origin such as 210Pb, 137Cs, 40K, 228Ac in the vertical soil structure using the method of gamma radiation spectroscopy and a germanium detector. Our data has shown that the concentration of the artificial isotope 137Cs in the examined soil is lower than the concentration of the natural isotopes 40K or 210Pb.

Handheld gamma-ray spectrometry (hGRS) is a valuable method for geological studies. It may be applied in correlations between well-logging and outcrop strata, enhance interpretations of sedimentological data, prospect radiogenic ores and geothermal resources, and identify radiogenic hazards for society. This paper aims to review and popularize one of the research methods based on a mobile device (hGRS) equipped with a BGO (bismuth germanium oxide) scintillator. The general concept of the research method is presented in this paper. The method's perspectives and limits based on reviewed literature. Advantages of hGRS include, e.g., low cost, short data acquisition time, the possibility of studying natural exposures, and a broad set of research applications. The main disadvantages comprise relatively modest resolution of acquired data and their difficult interpretation in complex geological formations. The review is backed by sample measurements performed in various geological exposures at Bornholm Island (Baltic Sea). Measurements comprised igneous rocks exposed in several quarries and sedimentary profiles near Liesti Valley and Muleby.

Opis:
The Sołtmany hammer meteorite is classified as an ordinary chondrite type L6, W0, S2. At present it is the most thoroughly and comprehensively examined Polish meteorite. A comprehensive petrological, mineralogical and geochemical analysis alongside the investigation of its physical and particularly thermophysical properties, and, most of all, analyses of cosmogenic radionuclides and noble gases isotopes content, as well as the use of a troilite thermometer has made it possible to draw interesting conclusions concerning the genesis and evolution of the parent body and the history of the parent meteoroid and, finally, the Sołtmany meteorite. The present report attempts at summing up the results of studies conducted at several European research centres in the last four years. The age of the the Sołtmany chondrite parent rock has been defined at 4.137 billion years. It was formed at a temperature of up to 440–450 K (about 170°C), probably at a depth of up to 3 to 7 km under the surface of the parent body, i.e. at a pressure of the order of 1–2.4 kbar. Such a low temperature during the accretion, diagenesis and metamorphism of the parent body may point to its complicated development, which may be in part due to collisions of partially melted planetesimals. Like with other type L ordinary chondrites, one can infer that the parent body could have been destroyed about 467 million years ago, at the time of a catastrophic collision which led to the formation of Gefion family of planetoids. Perhaps one of the bodies in this family was involved in another collision about 29.2 million years ago, which resulted in ejecting the parent meteoroid of the Sołtmany chondrite onto the Earth collision trajectory. Before entering the Earth’s atmosphere, this meteoroid had the mass of about 36 kg and the diameter of ca 13.5 cm. During its flight through the atmosphere, it rotated and somersaulted, which resulted in the formation of an uniform thin (0.5–0.7 mm) fusion crust, whose temperature reached 1000°C. In the last phase, the Sołtmany meteorite fell almost vertically and its mass was a mere 3% of the mass of the parent meteoroid – 1.066 kg. It hit the roof and then the concrete stairs of a farm building, which caused it to break into two bigger and many small pieces. It was found a few minutes after the fall, which occurred at 6:03 a.m. (CEST, UTC+2:00) on 30 April 2011, by Wydmińskie Lake in northern Poland (54°00,53’N, 22°00,30’E). The Sołtmany chondrite is one of just 14 meteorites in which the activity concentration of the cosmogenic 52Mn has been determined, and one of the few ordinary chondrites where the concentration of organic matter has been defined. As a result, it was found out that unlike in carbonaceous CI chondrites, the composition of organic particles is dominated by less complex compounds (CHO and CHOS) than CHNO and CHNOS compounds. This may indicate the decomposition of more complex organic compounds into particles with simple structures during magmatic and metamorphic processes related to formation of type L ordinary chondrites.

The paper presents, the chemical composition and the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides (238U, 234U,226Ra and 228Ra) in selected therapeutic mineral waters from: Krynica-Zdrój (Zuber I, Zuber II and Słotwinka), Rabka-Zdrój (Krakus, Warzelnia and Rabka IG-2), Iwonicz-Zdrój (Elin 7 and Emma 7), Klimkówka (Klimkówka 27) and Lubatówka (Lubatówka 12). The analyses were carried outfor water samples collected twice in 2008 and in 2016. The analyzed waters are used mainly for crenotherapy and therapeutic bathing. Some waters are also bottled and used for production of cosmetics and medicinal waters. The measured uranium activity concentrations in the studied groundwater were very low, below 3 mBq/dm3 and 11 mBq/dm3 for 238U and 234U, respectively. In the case of radium isotopes (226Ra and 228Ra), their activity concentrations varied in a wide range from ca. 150 to ca. 1500 mBq/dm3. The total mineralization of the analyzed waters variedfrom 3.5 to ca. 24 g/dm3. A significant variation of both chemical composition and radium concentrations were observed in the water from Warzelnia intake. For the remaining waters, variation of 226Ra and 228Ra concentrations was observed in three (Zuber I, Słotwinka, Emma 7), and six intakes (Zuber I, Słotwinka, Krakus, Klimkówka 27, Emma 7, Elin 7), respectively.

Opis:
The Upper Silesian urban-industrial agglomeration is one of the most industrialized areas in Europe. The intense industrialization should be attributed mostly to the presence of coal and other minerals deposits and its extraction. Mining areas of hard coal mines comprise approximately 25% of the total catchment area of watercourses in the area of Upper Silesian Coal Basin, including the river basin of the Upper Oder River and the Little Vistula River. The mining, its scope and depth, duration of mining works, extraction systems being used and the total volume of the drainage fundamentally affect the conditions of groundwater and surface water in the studied area. In this paper, an overall characteristics of the coal mining industry in the area of USCB was made, including the issues of its influence on water environment in the light of the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and its guidelines transposed into Polish law. An analysis of the collected data, obtained from collieries, relating to the quantity and quality of water flowing into the workings and discharged to surface watercourses, was performed. An approach to the requirements for wastewater discharge into the environment by these enterprises was presented regarding the physicochemical parameters, possible harmful substances and radionuclides measured in mine waters. The main goal of the paper is to recognize the condition of surface water bodies in the area of Upper Silesian Coal Basin and to make the assessment of the biological condition using Ecological Risk Assessment and bioindication methods.

The aim of this paper is to present a methodological introduction into cosmogenic radionuclides dating, summarizing the main research objectives, and an overview of the state of studies in Poland. Cosmogenic nuclides 3He, 10Be, 14C, 21Ne, 26Al and 36Cl are among the most common ones, being widely applied to analyses of geomorphological features and reconstructions of geological processes. Thereby they allow geochronological systematization of the Late Cenozoic, being of primary importance if traditional research methods fail. This approach has broad analytical potential for, i.e., dating of exposure history of different morphological features, estimation of denudation and erosion rates, as well as detailed reconstruction of glacial chronology.

Opis:
Nawiązując do przypadającego w 2017 r. jubileuszu 60-lecia działalności Centralnego Laboratorium Ochrony Radiologicznej (CLOR) w Warszawie w wywiadzie z dr.
Referring to the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Central Laboratory for Radiological Protection in Warsaw, the interview with its Director, Paweł Krajewski presents several issues on research and operational activities of CLOR e during the period of 1957-2017. Among other issues, new measurements methods, developed and implemented in CLOR, new kinds of radiometric and dosimetric devices for which the patents have been granted, were touched upon in the interview. Also, the focus was on the active participation CLOR’s staff in science, research and development projects both at national and international levels. In addition to that, particular attention was paid to the most spectacular action undertaken by CLOR in 1986 just after Chernobyl accident, when prophylactic doses of stable iodine were administered to about 18.5 million of Poles in various amounts depending on a recipient’s age. In the second part of the interview the important questions of modernization and strengthening the Polish system of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection and problems of Technical Support Organizations were discussed.
